  58. So sorry to have egnited this.  I admit that yes, after seeing the movie Leo is 
  59. a good actor.  
  60. I guess the reason I am resentful is Titanic.  The idea of the movie repulsed me 
  61. from the start, and to focus on a lame love story when there were so many 
  62. intelligent people aboard, including my friend's grandparents.
  63. I still don't like Kate Winslet though.  But If anyone knows a good movie she's 
  64. in I will be willing to attempt to change this cognition.

  127. unbelievable and annoying chasm jump on the vehicle.  As I stated....the =
  128. Avengers is not a good film but Armageddon does not even try to be one.

  385. Heavenly Creatures and is directed by Peter Jackson.  It's a great story
  386. about friendship and fantasy - on the darker side...check it out - Peter is

  1013.      Hollywood has always been obsessed with youth, but that obsession
  1014. finally appears to be spinning out of control.  In these halcyon days of
  1015. 'N Sync, "Dawson's Creek" and the like, it now seems that you can sell any
  1016. pitch in Hollywood by naming a piece of source material and tagging on the
  1017. phrase "...but with teenagers."  The most recent wave may have started
  1018. with CLUELESS ("Jane Austen's _Emma_, but with teenagers"), and has since
  1019. generated such classics as THE FACULTY ("THE THING, but with teenagers")
  1020. and SHE'S ALL THAT ("PYGMALION, but with teenagers").  So why not CRUEL
  1021. INTENTIONS?  Why not "DANGEROUS LIAISONS, but with teenagers?"
  1022.  
  1023.      Because it's a really lousy idea, that's why, made even worse by
  1024. appalling execution.  The principle players are Sebastian Valmont (Ryan
  1025. Phillippe) and Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Manhattan
  1026. step-siblings who are birds of a poisonous feather.  Sebastian delights in
  1027. deflowering innocents and building his reputation as a cad; Kathryn seeks
  1028. vengeance on a sweet young thing named Cecile (Selma Blair) who
  1029. unwittingly stole away her boyfriend.  United in their disdain for all
  1030. other feeling human beings, Sebastian and Kathryn strike a wager.  It
  1031. involves Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), a teen who has published a
  1032. national magazine article trumpeting her virginity.  Sebastian's mission
  1033. is to seize that virtue or risk losing his classic car.  If he wins, his
  1034. next conquest will be his own step-sister.
  1035.  
  1036.      If that all sounds considerably sleazier than the original DANGEROUS
  1037. LIAISONS, that's only because it is.  Writer/director Roger Kumble plays
  1038. most of the film as though it's soft-core porn for teenyboppers, teasing
  1039. with pseudo-incestuous fondling and money-shot close-ups of Gellar and
  1040. Blair tongue kissing.  To make matters even more unpleasant, Kumble even
  1041. plays an interracial relationship for titillation value, and goes for
  1042. cheap laughs by introducing a pointless subplot in which a stud athlete
  1043. (Eric Mabius) is a closet homosexual, complete with gratuitous slurs.  In
  1044. a depressing case of lowest common denominator film-making, Kumble has
  1045. appealed to his teen audience by reducing the themes of "Les Liaisons
  1046. Dangereuses" to "everyone has sex with everyone else."
  1047.  
  1048.      In an even more depressing development, Kumble may actually have the
  1049. _best_ grasp of the source material.  Ryan Phillippe, in a valiant but
  1050. grossly misguided effort to do some acting, spends virtually the entire
  1051. film aping John Malkovich's performance in Stephen Frears' 1988 DANGEROUS
  1052. LIAISONS.  Every inflectionless line reading, every arched eybrow, every
  1053. lascivious double-entendre is familiar, with no apparent adjustment for
  1054. the fact that Sebastian is a contemporary teenager instead of an 18th
  1055. century nobleman.  Gellar is only a bit better in the lip-curling Glenn
  1056. Close role, while Selma Blair plays Cecile not as simple and innocent, but
  1057. with a fumbling idiocy that makes her every moment on screen unbearable.
  1058. Only Reese Witherspoon brings a shred of dignity to the proceedings,
  1059. continuing to show a wonderful presence for a young actress and an
  1060. interest in finding something human in her character.
  1061.  
  1062.      Unfortunately, that's an interest her director doesn't share.  I
  1063. suppose it shouldn't be surprising that CRUEL INTENTIONS is just another
  1064. in a long line of glossy high school audience flicks, another film with a
  1065. mind-numbingly incessant underscore of shuffle-beats and pop songs,
  1066. another vehicle for pretty girls and even prettier boys to pose for their
  1067. fans.  It is sad, however, that these filmmakers have to keep picking
  1068. promising source material for their libretti, then demonstrating no
  1069. concern for that material whatsoever.  DANGEROUS LIAISONS was a tale of
  1070. corruption beneath a courtly veneer; CRUEL INTENTIONS makes the shocking
  1071. suggestion that adolescents can be petty, manipulative and obsessed with
  1072. sex.  It's a stupid and pandering film which will probably appeal to its
  1073. audience perfectly, leaving the rest of us to sit back and wait for the
  1074. inevitable "MOBY DICK, but with teenagers."
  1075.

  1196. Well, the WAV file is on every AOL CDROM you get in the mail.  In fact, I'm
  1197. sure you're going to get one of the new 3" disks soon (if you haven't
  1198. already).  Cute things, but useless as a coaster (unlike the full-size discs!).

  1281. LOS ANGELES (AP) - Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan" won the
  1282. top movie award from the Producers Guild of America. Since inception
  1283. of the awards in 1989, the top movie winner has gone on to win an
  1284. Academy Award for best picture every year with the exception of 1995
  1285. and 1992. "Saving Private Ryan" is nominated for 11 Oscars. The PGA
  1286. awards were announced Wednesday. In television, David E. Kelley won
  1287. for producing the series "The Practice," which also won three Golden
  1288. Globes and three Emmys. Kelley was also nominated in the same
  1289. category for "Ally McBeal." In non-series TV, Tom Hanks won the PGA

  1303. Ryan" marched forward on Wednesday by winning the top
  1304. motion picture award from the Producers Guild of America.

  1307. more days until the Academy Award ceremony.
