I am going to have to disagree with you on your assessment of "Bad
Girls." I also, unlike many, enjoyed the movie a lot, but I think
Madeleine Stowe is wonderful and I loved her quiet portrayal of a woman
who's got to do what a woman's got to do.
When it came out, I recall some people having trouble with the feminism,
or lack thereof. My view is that being a feminist doesn't mean you have
to act like a man (thank God), but there were complaints that the bad
girls were too girly. Anyone else remember this and have thoughts on it?

My take on this movie was as follows:
Excellent technically, super sound and clear picture. Good story, involved
enough for x phanatics but simple enought for casual fans. Very good
special fx especially the scenes in the snow in Antartica. But once again
the best thing about this movie is the best thing about the series: Gillian
Anderson. Her performance was right on target, showing strength and
vulnerablility simultaneously. David Duchovny is certainly not chopped
liver, but IMHO Gillian stole the show.
Overall, I rate the movie A-
It was one of the rare recent movies which lived up to its hype. (Can we
name many more?)
I really hope there are no more X- Files movies, though. I just don't think
the next one could be as unique as this one.

The Bell Jar is by Sylvia Plath and is about a college-aged female during
the late forties (early fifties? one of the two. When the Rosenbergs were
administered their death sentences.) It's autobiographical and shows the
main charecter's fall into madness and her attempt at suicide and her
treatment (including shock treatment both before and after her attempted
suicide.)

I just got back from seeing the X-files movie. It's a good movie despite a
few gaps now and then (just small things, like getting home from
Antartica.) I'm an X-files fan but not very hardcore (I haven't been able
to see it regularly for two years due to my lack of cable.) The movie
stands well for people who don't know the X-files.
I partially agree with Thomas, but disagree with one aspect: not being a
fan doesn't mean the reviewer is impartial. But then, no one is impartial,
so it doesn't reallly matter. Maybe a better way to look at it is that
both fan and non-fan reviewers have to be taken with a grain of salt.
Afterall, there is a reason why people do or don't watch the x-files...
I'll get off my soap box but one more comment: I'm one of the few people
to see the Twin Peaks movie... one big difference between it and the
X-files movie is that the Twin Peaks movie has to be taken in context
with the series despite the fact that it is a prequel. On it's own, I do
not feel it would truly make sense. The X-files movie overcomes that
difficulty. but then, it's overall a much better movie than the twin peaks
one... it's like apples and oranges...

After re-reading my post, I realize I came across a little harsh. After
all, when checking out a movie, I pay close attention to what
"high-brow" critics say before shelling out 8 bucks in most cases. I
also trust the opinions of many "high-brow" critics implicitly.
I do stand by my ascertion, however, that if you do not care for the
X-files TV show, you will not care for this movie. I interpeted the
phrase "I have never been a fan of the TV show" as meaning that the
critic did not like the TV show (which may have been erroneous on my
part). Since the movie IS the TV show, and makes no bones about being
anything else, there is no way you are going to like this movie if you
don't like the TV show. Vis-versa, If you like the TV show, you will
probably like this movie. Hence, as a fan of the X-files, you could
safely discount the opinions of those that do not like the TV show, even
if you have trusted the same critics in the past.
If you didn't care for the Twin Peaks TV show, you probably wouldn't
like the movie either (if the movie followed the TV show as closely as
the X-files. I don't know, I've never seen the Twin Peaks movie).

Hi Guys,
As far as a critic stating upfront that they are not a fan of
X-Files, I think that it is most appropriate to lay out your
prejudices for the readers. And I would expect the reader to
appreciate that.
I saw the X-Files movie this weekend and although I am not sure what
number I fall into from the very well thought out earlier graph by
Chris I pretty much watch it every week. I thought the movie was a
big yawn. Chris Carter has teased his audience with this big hidden
"truth" for so long and has built conspiracy upon conspiracy that I
am beginning to think that even he doesn't remember what the hell the
truth is supposed to be. I think he needs to wrap up the mythology to
some degree and move on. Otherwise his audience will move on for
him. It's beginning to play like Gilligan's Island. Just when you
think they've found a way off the island, gilligan screws it up. The
only problem is that you never really believe they will ever get off
the island.
I don't think the hyper dialogue of Mulder and Scully played well on
the big screen either. What can be fun on TV can come across as
unnecessary garbage in a 2 hour movie.
The relationship of the two was not true to the series. What was the
"gotcha" game they were playing? That was totally out of character.
I do think that this was merely a two hour extension of the series
and totally unnecessary except that Mulder got to say a couple of
"Shits". Whoohoo! And I was as excited as anyone to see it.
Perhaps in the next one they will choose a storyline that is self
contained (like all of the better episodes of the series) and leave
the mythology to the series.
This summer is not looking good. I hope Armegeddon lives up to the
hype.
For "Lord of the Flies" I suggest you check out the Simpsons episode
(that I cannot name) it is a hoot.

"The X-Files," a feature based on the popular Fox TV series,
topped the weekend box-office chart by grossing $31 million
in its first three days, according to studio estimates.
Fellow newcomer "Mulan," a Disney animated feature, followed
with an impressive $23 million. The third to fifth-placed
movies each fell two rankings from last weekend: "The Truman
Show," which had been No. 1 for two weeks, dropped to third
($12.4 mil), followed by "Six Days, Seven Nights" ($10.5
mil) and "A Perfect Murder" ($7.5 mil). That one-time great
green hope, "Godzilla," limped to the No. 8 spot with $3
million.

Jayson,
I was thinking more of
re-making The Eng.Patient or Titanic with Neilson and Presley as the
romantic interests. Too awful?
I guess i'm reeeeeeeel dumb, or was when I wrote that.

A "South Park" movie has been announced, but it's not currently in production.
"Total Recall 2" is a go with Jonathan Frakes at the helm after he finishes
his duties as "Star Trek 9" director. I can't find any information on the
other two.

All are PLANNED to be made. As we have found out (for ex, with the new
Superman movie, which went as far as to scout locations in the fair city of
Pittsburgh, even after the rumours that it had been canceled were all over
the place), this means nothing. South Park and Total Recall 2 are the
farthest along, and have the best chance of making it to the theatres. I
have heard nothing of Child's Play 4, but would not be surprised to see it
on video shelves within months (see Children of the Corn *5*). Terminator
3 has been talked about for years with no results, but this means nothing.
Look at how long it took for Escape From LA to come out. And the first
Total Recall is probably amongst the oldest films with a planned sequel,
and the odds of this one being made are pretty good, or so I have heard.

Bruce: Nice to see you back on the boards.
First off, where's the critique of my favorite movie choices? I'm still
waiting.....
Second, would you please be specific about what you didn't like/would have
done differently if you were directing this x-files movie? I think this
would be fascinating to hear. Remember, you have to pick up the plot
exactly where the movie does. No cheating and changing the storyline before
the movie starts.
Third, I really liked the lighthearted play between Scully and Mulder,
especially the I got you big time kidding.
I thought it made the movie unique, but still was believable within the
context of the story. And not far off from their tv personalities. I also
(disagree with me if you must I really don't care) was glad there was still
no real romantic involvement(Just cuddling and a near miss when the bee
stung Scully) because once that stuff starts the X-files lose much of their
meaning to me. I thought it was risky of Carter to even go this far. I
really think this tried and true formula applies to the x-files: When you
got a winning formula you don't mess with it. I think they should stick to
what works.
