Gary,
You don't care if we disagree? I'm hurt.
I would have walked out of the theatre if they had jumped in the
sack. What makes their relationship unique is that they are able to
have a platonic partnership. I just did not think that the attitude
shown (especially by Sculley) was consistent with the show. One of
her charms is that she is so damned straighlaced that I just do not
think she would manage a joke after waking from hyperthemia. Or it
would have been drier than the Sahara.
As I said before, if Carter does not want to really address the
questions that lie in the ongoing mythology of the program, then I
think it is best left alone in a theatrical movie. The majority of
episodes deal with stories that live outside of this main story line
and as I said before, I think they are the best in the series.
I know that everybody thinks that he has to continue the mystery and
I agree to a small degree. I think that he is coming very close
though to finding his entire premise become one big fat red herring
and it has been too intelligent to end in that manner.
BTW, SPOILER!!!!! SPOILER!!!!SPOILER!!!
Did anybody for a moment believe that she would quit? That she would
die? That Xfiles would not reopen?

The "Battlestar Galactica" film predated the TV show by a year or more. It
was reissued once the TV show hit the air.

Forgetting, of course, the "Battlestar Galactica" feature released into
theatres
during the show's first season.

The film premiered and the series began airing on the same night, September 17, 1978.

If I remember correctly the Battlestar Gallactica movie was the
premiere episode repackaged for the theatres. Back then it was
typical for some such TV programs (A Dick Clark produced movie about
the Beatles appeared on american broadcast TV as well as European
theatres) to appear on the big screen in Europe. After an initial
positive response they decided to try it in the US.
Since it was coming on the heels of starwars and clearly had ripped
that movie's look off I think they decided to go for some quick
bucks. Now I'm sure that there are a myriad of differences between
the two but at that point in film the grungy and intricate look of
the star wars ships was new to film.

Meryl Streep and Bette Midler are said to be considering
roles in "Boys R Us," a comedy about a middle-aged woman
whose husband's deviated septum prevents him from kissing
her without closing off his air supply. Variety reports
hubby is a computer whiz too busy to get his problem fixed,
so his wife gets together with a friend, they hire a couple
of young hunks and open a business for other love-starved,
middle-aged women. Emma Thompson is also being mentioned for
a role in the movie, which is to be directed by Gillian
Armstrong ("Little Women").

The locale was good enough for Tom Hanks in "Forrest Gump"
and director Clint Eastwood for his disappointing "Midnight
in the Garden of Good and Evil." Now John Travolta is
heading to Savannah to use the colonial Georgia capital
known as "The Jewel of the South" as the setting for his new
movie, "The General's Daughter," a military thriller based
on Nelson DeMille's novel about the rape and murder of a
West Point graduate who is the daughter of a legendary
general. Simon West ("Con Air") will direct. Filming begins
next month.
-=> * <=-
Liam Neeson ("Schindler's List") and Emily Watson are in
serious talks to star in "Angela's Ashes," the film
adaptation of Frank McCourt's Pulitzer-Prize-winning memoir,
reports Variety. Director Alan Parker ("Evita") is targeting
a September start for the film. Neeson and Watson, if their
deals are worked out, would play the parents in the story.

Speculation continues to mount over what Leonardo DiCaprio
will choose for his next project. The Hollywood Reporter
says Leo is developing "The Stanford Prison Experiment" with
producers who include his father, George. The movie is based
on a true story involving a group of Stanford University
students who took part in a mock prison experiment that went
awry in 1971.

Maureen O'Sullivan, the Irish-born beauty who starred as
Jane in a string of Tarzan films and whose seven children
included Mia Farrow, died Monday night at Scottsdale
Memorial Hospital in suburban Phoenix. She was 87. One of
her daughters, Stephanie Farrow, said she thought her mother
died of old age but provided no details. O'Sullivan's first
appearance as the scantily clad Jane to Johnny Weissmuller's
Tarzan was in 1932's "Tarzan the Ape Man." Other films in
the MGM jungle adventure series included 1934's "Tarzan and
his Mate" and 1941's "Tarzan's Secret Treasure." But she
also appeared in "Anna Karenina" (1935), "Pride and
Prejudice" (1940) and "The Big Clock" (1948), which was
directed by her first husband, John Farrow. (He died in
1963.) In 1986 she played her own daughter Mia's mother in
"Hannah and Her Sisters," a film by Mia's then-boyfriend
Woody Allen. "The world lost a lovely leading lady," Bob
Hope said Tuesday.

Actress Claire Danes, currently working on the movie version
of the TV show "The Mod Squad," is also making plans for a
four-year project -- Yale University. Danes, 19, tells Vogue
magazine she has been "obsessing" for the last year about
shipping off to the New Haven CT campus this fall. The star
of "Little Women" and "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet"
says Yale grad Jodie Foster has been counseling her. She
says Foster keeps telling her "it's great to be around smart
people who are your own age."

Would like to communicate with other list members who share an interest in
this genre. Interested in historical epic films and discussion of same
from ancient, medieval, to modern, including major historical figures.
Also interested in separating fact from fiction, with respect to the
poetic license many prominent producers/directors/scriptwriters assumed in
the course of the production. Would appreciate responses.

Subject: [MV] Mulan Review
Mulan the Merchandise opened this past weekend to stellar numbers for
Disney. You see - Disney no longer makes movies - they make merchandise.
And what better way to sell merchandise than to have a movie with all the
characters. That's what the Smurf's did (it was a product before a TV show
- - honest!). But now look at the Smurfs - no one cares about them anymore.
Has Gargamel finally won the fight against those mischievous critters - or
has Azreal filled his tummy with the gooey insides of the wee blue folk?
I'm just wasting space here until I get to the rating part....Another
cookie cutter movie with everything you've come to expect and nothing you
will remember (especially those songs) after you leave. Disney should
check out what Fox did last year with Anastasia - my favourite animated
film since Aladdin. I give Mulan a 60% (the lowest rating before a fail)
only because if I failed a Disney movie I'm not sure how much longer I'd be
around. Longer than the Smurfs I hope.
