  44. How can you compare story of Good Will Hunting with Titanic?? The story
  45. of Good Will was far superior compared to those of Titanic. I might not
  46. have seen the movie but the way I heard the comments from other people,
  47. they were not that absorbed with the story but rather on other aspects
  48. like the FX, the love. I guess Titanic is one of those period movies
  49. whose color and background simply takes every viewers breath away. I
  50. guess that sweeping is the word appropriate for Titanic and sensitive is
  51. for Good Will.

  53. Here in the Philippines, they are translating the dialogue into the
  54. native dialect and it simply sounds awful and corny. The plot still
  55. resembles another Romeo and Juliet. They are just rehashing usual story
  56. about the one great love. I am sick and tired about those movies that
  57. keep rehashing that type of formula. As for Good Will, the story may not
  58. be that new. But it has sensitivity and maturity coming from a couple of
  59. Gen-Xers.

  61. I guess this goes back to my concept that there are three type of
  62. writers:
  63.     a. the one who has a very good story to tell
  64.     b. a good storyteller (he has an okay story but the way he tells 
  65.            or presents it makes you not put down the book)
  66.     c. the real thing (has an original story but not all the
  67. time,             knows how to play with words, is able to present
  68. different 
  69.        views and emotions, makes you think about the other side 
  70.        issues)

  72. To me: Titanic has a letter b, makes you fall in love with love while
  73. Good Will has letter c and makes you think and see the hidden emotions.

  92. I disagree with you on this one. I thought Unforgiven and The English
  93. Patient were extremely well done and well deserving of their Oscar praise.

  95. One of the most overpraised movies I have seen has got to be Trainspotting.
  96. I heard nothing but positive reviews from the critics about this movie, but
  97. after watching it I can honestly say I think it is one of the worst movies
  98. of the decade.

  165. I agree!  GOOD WILL HUNTING was a wonderfully profound film.  I loved
  166. TITANIC too, but for different reasons.  It was fun and of epic proportions
  167. and it was beautiful to look at.  GOOD WILL HUNTING illustrated the human
  168. condition in one of the most poignant screenplays I've seen in a long time.
  169. When I went to see TITANIC I wasn't expecting anything great.  Looked like
  170. a lot of fluff.  And I think that's what it was.  But I think there's room
  171. for that kind of moviemaking.  It was good at what it did (for me) and I
  172. thoroughly enjoyed it and plan to buy it when it comes out on video.  GOOD
  173. WILL HUNTING will also occupy a space in my collection but for different
  174. reasons.  This film touched me as a human being.  I saw myself a lot in
  175. this film.  It doesn't matter how old the writers are, they wrote a script
  176. that truly touches people.  I think each film is wonderful for different
  177. reasons.  I don't have a problem with TITANIC being named best picture of
  178. the year.  I think the true talent in GOOD WILL HUNTING was in the writing
  179. (and in Robin Williams' performance).  That's what got recognized.

  240. Word is, Leo will earn 21 million to play a rapist/serial killer in his
  241. next movie "American Psycho." While this may be a great movie, I think this
  242. move is career suicide for him. This movie undoubtedly will show he is a
  243. great actor, however, it will tarnish his teen idol image beyond repair.
  244. And let's face it: Leo's biggest fans are teen girls.
  245. So it's gonna be real interesting to see how the public reacts  to this

  275. It comes out very cheesy, simply over-acted, and too dramatic. A typical
  276. Filipino has usually two mindsets, the American and Filipino one.
  277. Because we understand and speak good English, we can comprehend the
  278. romance and etc. But when it is translated to Filipino, it comes out to
  279. be very outrageous and corny. It would be equivalent to a B-movie
  280. without the "cult" adjective attached to it. Almost everyone here that
  281. this translation thing is very corny and people are trying very hard to
  282. cash on the Titanic tidal wave.

  284. Right now they are making a spoof of Titanic called Tataynics where
  285. Tatay is the Filipino word for Father.

  298. ROTFL -  I keep wanting to say something about this, but I know I haave
  299. to read all the posts first, so this was the last and here I am. I kind of
  300. agree about the dialogue...must be aimed at the pre-adolescents. Cameron
  301. bagged a huge portion of the paying public!

  303.     I think the overall fascination with
  304. this movie is not the romantic storyline, but the whole need to "be
  305. there" and see for yourself what happened with this ship.  Today we have
  306. instant CNN coverage of anything and everything and things even 20 years
  307. ago are ancient history. Events like the Titanic are almost beyond
  308. comprehension because there "is no footage"/"coverage" to refer to. The
  309. love story just keeps us there and makes us care <G> - flaws
  310. notwithstanding.

  369. I must admit that I watched Trainspotting three times in four days.  I was
  370. captivated by the whole movie.  It has certainly become a cult classic.
  371. Did it deserve the praise and awards that it received?  It really depends
  372. on the viewer.  It was not a movie that transcended all age groups.  I am a
  373. 23 year-old open-minded male.  My friend (of the same age) who is used to
  374. the Starship Troopers and Face Off (Both movies I liked as well) hated it.
  375.  
  376. You get the same feelings from Trainspotting as you do from The Fifth
  377. Element.  The plot and the character builds are weak... but you are so
  378. fascinated by everything else in the movie... none of that really matters.

  575. And let's face it: Leo's biggest fans are teen girls.
  576. So it's gonna be real interesting to see how the public reacts  to this

  699. To be honest I cannot believe they are even making "American Psycho". 
  700. All I ever heard about it was how absolutely revolting it is.  I
  701. wonder what the audience will be for such a film.

  703. I agree that The English Patient is hugely overrated and think that
  704. in the years to come it will be considered unworthy of the Oscar. 
  705. But it had all the elements that the academy loves so well and that's
  706. that.

  708. I have to disagree with the criticism of The Unforgiven.  I think
  709. Eastwood created one of the best Westerns ever made.  In fact I
  710. rented it again this weekend.  The movie turns the genre upside down
  711. and allows us to imagine what happens to all of those gunslingers
  712. that lived to settle down.  But most importantly it made real the
  713. effect of killing a man and stripped it of its romance.  As much as I
  714. love action films with big guns and explosions (nothing Freudian here)
  715. it never hurts to be reminded of reality.

  717. Speaking of translation, I love Chinese and Japanese films.  I go to
  718. a theatre in a Chinese section of town fairly regularly.  The one
  719. thing that you have to get used to is the terrible translations.  I
  720. don't know why they can't just hire someone who is fluent to check
  721. the dialogue but it can be laughable.  That would be a cool job,
  722. rewriting bad subtitles.
