English patient was a boring movie. In the class with BlowUp and a few

Another I hated was Get shorty.

Subject: [MV] Anaconda, December, Feeling Minnesota, and others....

I recently rented Anaconda. I thought it was a really good movie.  It had
suspense, drama, horror and a tad of romance and comedy.  I wouldn't say
that it is Oscar-material, but it is definitely worth renting.

I also rented Feeling Minnesota.   I thought this movie was very bad. I was
a little confused throughout the movie too.  It had an all-star cast, but a
lousy story-line.  I don't recommend this movie, unless you want to see it
just to get  your own opinion.

I rented the movie December also.  THose who like history movies and movie
about war should watch this. I rented it just because of the actors in it.
It stars Wil Wheaton, Brian Krause, Jason London and Chris Young., These
actors aren't usually mentioned so when I see a movie with a variety of
young actors in it, I like to get my views on it.  I however, found this
movie to be a little bit of a bore. I couldn't finish it.

I rented The Stoned Age recently.  It totally sucked. I thought it would be
something like Mallrats (which is a very good movie by the way), but it was
nothing like it. It had no story line. All it was, was one swear word after
another.   It was bad!

I also couldn't stand the movie 12 Monkeys. Seven was good though.

Comments are appreciated!

Roderick Vonhoegens has done a lot of research, and he is presenting a
'Virtual Edition' of the script of the first episode of Star Wars at
http://www.theforce.net/Virtual-Edition/

I guess it is quite accurate, because George Lucas did not approve of
this, and his friends stated the site gave him "a hard time thinking"...

Also on this site: the "lost scenes" from "A New Hope".
Enjoy it, but beware: reading the entire script might spoil the movie
release for you!

I didn't see the movie yet, but from what I could see on the previews,
it wasn't worth the money that you paid.  It didn't look any good at all.

Kevin:

You make a lot of valid points. I also think you must acknowledge and
realize two things:

First, When a major director like Emmerich undertakes a  major task like
Godzilla, he faces this dilemma:
Should he make an exact replica of what we've already seen in past Godzilla
movies or should he stamp his own imprint on this project? Some changes are
inevitable. They go with the territory.

Second, if this was a low-budget feature, we would see a certain type of
movie, but a bigger budget allows the director to do certain things
technology wise. I think what you wanted was a big budget movie with a low
budget story line. What you got was really the director taking advantage of
certain advances.
It's simply his take on the Godzilla legend. That doesn't make it right or
wrong. Maybe Emmerich was the wrong guy for this job. But then again, maybe
NO ONE could exceed people's expectations on this project. Some people want
a NEW Godzilla (Show me something more than what we've seen) while others
just wanna see a good story with the old familiar Godzilla. I tend to think
the big budget nature of this project influenced the end product.
I agree this movie wasn't what it should have been. I'm not sure why this
is so. But personally, I did like Godzilla himself. I think the rest of the
movie was the real problem.

I agree with Depp being an amazing Thompson, as Depp is mostlikely one the
most talented of the young actors these days... but I was also impressed
with Benicio Del Toro. I have seen him as Fenster in Usual Suspects and
thought he was great, I have also just recently seen him with Alicia
Silverstone in Excess Baggage, and wasn't really impressed. But as Gonzo...
wow. I wonder how he put on so much weight. Gonzo was about 300 pounds,
according to Thompson. In Usual Suspects and Excess Baggage, Del Toro was
skinny. Sort of reminds me of De Niro in Raging Bull. You know, he gained
60 or so pounds for the part.

Off to see Godzilla today, I let you know what I think...

I have a feeling that Godzilla is going to have a lot of wildly
varying opinions.  Let me just say that I think that it is one of the
worst movies I have ever seen.

I'm not using hyperbole to make a point but honestly felt that it was
a godawful, crummy and pointless movie.  As someone mentioned earlier,
Godzilla had no personality.  Were we supposed to root for Godzilla or
sypathize with it?  You couldn't tell from the film.

I have to say that I have not enjoyed a single Emerich directed film
yet (why do I keep going?  Even I don't know.)  but Godzilla is by
far his worst yet.  And who is that woman who evidently has not
completed her intro to acting classes?  There are so many things to
complain about but the bottom line is that it was void of camp or
humor but at the same time did not make any effort to follow any
logic.  If you want to make an intense monster movie you can't have
characters making idiotic oneliners while being eaten by the lizard.
I have a feeling that this film was put into production before a
script was ready and they simply pieced it together as they went
along.  Thier reasoning was probably that this is an event movie and
it didn't really matter as long as Godzilla looked good.  And you
know what?  They failed on that as well!  Even the design of Godzilla
was a huge mistake.  It looked like a lizard crossed with one of the
Alien monsters.  I was going to list a series of logical points but I
don't have the energy in these tired old fingers.

The weekend boxoffice is about half of what Sony was hoping for.
Sure they will put on a good face but I think this movie is going to
tank ultimately.  OK when I say tank I mean in the case of such a
blockbuster I think it will be lucky to break $200 million.  6 months
ago people had reason to believe that it would be second only to
Titantic.

What was the point of even using the name except to cash in on the
existing franchise?  If there is a sequel they should just give $100
million to TOHO and allow them to make a big budget version of the
campy and lovable Godzilla that has succeeded for so many years.

BTW, I wasn't impressed by ANYTHING in the film.  I've seen F/X that
are far more impressive already.  The bar has been raised and these
guys didn't reach it.

This weekend I also saw what I thought was a great film.  "The
Opposite of Sex" stars a growing Christina Ricci as one of the most
dispicable lead characters I've ever seen in a film and is absolutely
hilarious.  It is a very black comedy and gets its humor from a lot of
touchy subjects but it is ultimately quite intelligent and will
probably appeal to those she attacks the most. Its playing at the art
houses here so I don't know how available it will be elsewhere but
make sure you catch it on video.

I must concur with Gene Ehrich.  THE ENGLISH PATIENT has to be one of the most
overpraised films of the decade.  It's opening sequence pan across the desert
was breathtaking.  But, aside from Juliet Binoche, it was pretty much a waste
of time.  I fail to understand the heat supposedly made by Kristin Scott
Thomas.  Ralph Fiennes was his usual enigmatic self.  Elaine Benes may be the
only critic with a fair podium against this film.

L.A. CONFIDENTIAL is a good film.  I don't think it was a great film.  The most
overlooked performances of the year are Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce.  Crowe
holds the whole film together.  Also, James Cromwell.  Spacey was excellent, as
usual, but his part wasn't as juicy and he wasn't as incredibly different as he
has been in other parts.

TITANIC is a great film.  Yes, it is overly sentimental, but Cameron was far
more wise with his writing than anyone wants to give him credit for.  He made
us care about Rose and Jack and this is the glue that keeps all those teens
coming back and back and back.  It is a wonderfully romantic epic.  Also,
Cameron caught the downfall of the Victorian rich in quiet, understated tones,
that informed the film but didn't become preachy.  It is far more hard to write
a film like this and make it work, than it is to write something like GOOD WILL
HUNTING or even, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL.  TITANIC should have prevailed over GOOD
WILL.  If Ben and Matt had not seemed such cute, young popular hunks, I doubt
if they would have had a chance.  Also, the real savior of GOOD WILL was Rob
Reiner.  Originally, Damon and Affleck were having Will become caught up in
some international spy intrigue.  Reiner encouraged them to stick with the
characters and their logical development.

Saw BULWORTH this weekend.   A must see film  Beatty is back at the top of his
form.

I have to say that Good Will Hunting had more insight into the human
condition than 10 Titantics.  Damon and Affleck have both been the
targets of various attacks including the claim that they did not
actually write the script.  The screenwriter that discussed their
script (I think it was Goldman) came out and specifically repudiated
that rumor.  He said he discussed some simple plot point issues with
them in one day.

I found Good Will Hunting to be an amazing and profound (who would
think guys in thier twenties could be so sensitive?) film that
deserved much more than best screenplay.

After all the bedazzlement of seeing a big boat sink real good has
passed us by I think that Good Will Hunting will stand as a much
better film in every category (except for costumes and big boat f/x).

Of course I could be wrong.

Am I the only person who did not like Titanic?  I could not stand watching
the acting of the "Brad Pitt wanna-be" and the young "Gillian Anderson"
during the suicide sequence.  "If you jump, I jump because I'm involved
now."  Leonardo was not convincing during that part (a key sequence in the
movie) and he never convinced me of being anything other than a rich brat.
He even seemed more prissy than Kate.  I guess when I look for a romantic
flick... I either look for sappy (True Romance) or drama (English Patient)
not a made for McDonalds movie.

Of course... who am I to shoot down a kazillion dollar film.

My officemates say that I missed half of my life for not watching
Titanic. Well, I don't think so. Maybe I will try to watch it again in
five or so years. I think watching Titanic would be like reading a
Regency romance or something.
