  5. Wow, I just finished this film ... 
  6.  
  7. I couldn't believe how boring it was though, it was
  8. almost painful to watch in part ... Final score :
  9. 1.5/5 ... I was thinking of going down to 1/5 even but
  10. I decided to be GENEROUS.
  11.  
  12. It's a shame really because there are a few *nasty*
  13. scenes that are quite effective, also some GRATUITOUS
  14. nudity and sex scenes, the works.  It was the
  15. characters and especially the story that was simply
  16. boring me completely.
  17.  
  18. Story of a young man, Michael Caine, yes he was once
  19. young !  ;-)  His brother was murdered and he wants to
  20. find out who did it, You never really know what is
  21. going on, who is this character, who is that one ... 
  22. I have a headache now after watching this.  
  23.  
  24. Around the midway point in the movie I simply gave up
  25. since I couldn't understand ANYTHING, I just waited
  26. for the next nasty scene that was coming up, usually
  27. Michael Caine threatening a thug to get more
  28. information ... I forgot about trying to understand
  29. who was this person or that one or what the hell was
  30. going on.

  32. Highly disappointing film, I thought it was the recent
  33. remake with Sly Stallone that was messed up ... but
  34. they are both about in the same boat, 1.5/5 each.

  344. Ok, I saw this excellent film last night ... french
  345. canadian movie ... The original title is : "La femme
  346. qui boit" ... it is available in the original version
  347. with english subtitles : "The woman who drinks" ...

  350. It's the simple story of a woman, starts off in the
  351. 1950's and then we get to see what happens to her over
  352. the course of 30 years approximately ... As the title
  353. suggests she has a major drinking problem ... We get
  354. to meet her husband, her kid, her sister and her lover
  355. ... It starts at the end where she is alone in a room,
  356. all old and bitter, saying in voice overs how her life
  357. really *sucks* and then we flashback 30 years before
  358. and get to see how she got there ... 
  359.  
  360. Wow, amazing actors in this film, Elise Guilbault is
  361. great as the bitter drunken woman, this is what I call
  362. acting, I'm not even sure if she wasn't really getting
  363. drunk for real, that's how good she was ... Luc Picard
  364. is her husband who cheats on her left and right and
  365. fights with her all the time (when he is home of
  366. course !) ... Also Michel Forget as her lover and the
  367. young son who tries everything to get her to stop
  368. drinking ... 
  369.  
  370. I appreciated the hand held cameras used to film this,
  371. the woman walks around often all drunk and by having a
  372. hand held camera it makes her walk even more uncertain
  373. ... leaning left ... right ... stumbling, etc.
  374.  
  375. The film is highly depressing, although there are some
  376. moments that are actually comical as when the woman's
  377. husband buys her a nice fur coat but then a lil' while
  378. later during a poker game he actually gives it to a
  379. young woman there, he told her : "If you show me your
  380. breasts, I'll give you the coat !" ... and she
  381. actually disrobes right there in front of everybody
  382. .... nasty stuff !!  How humiliating for the woman who
  383. sees her husband doing that right in front of her
  384. (Drunken fool !)

  415. Here's a quick summary I found in THE PAPER.
  416. Source : La Presse, Tuesday. Dec. 18.

  418. Good article about THE OSCARS ... and 2001 films in
  419. general.
  420.  
  421. - This year lots of people have troubles selecting
  422. which films should be nominated in some categories due
  423. to the overall poor quality of the movies produced.
  424.  
  425. - This could be the first year since 1988 that the 5
  426. nominated films in the BEST PICTURE Category would
  427. have been released in December.
  428.  
  429. - Vanilla sky was supposed to be a contender in the
  430. BEST PICTURE category, but it turned out to be average
  431. according to most people so the Oscar buzz has cooled
  432. down dramatically.
  433.  
  434. - Shrek could be nominated in the BEST PICTURE
  435. category but it would have little chance of winning.
  436.  
  437. - Lots of 2001 films opened big in the first week end
  438. but then couldn't develop legs because they weren't so
  439. good.  Example : Planet of the apes.
  440.  
  441. - Black Hawk Down, Ali, Lord of the rings, A beautiful
  442. mind are all strong contenders in the BEST PICTURE
  443. category. They have good chances of being nominated.
  444.  
  445. - Other films that could be considered include :
  446. Amelie  (Le fabuleux destin d'Amelie Poulain)
  447. In the bedroom with Sissy Spacek
  448. The shipping news with Kevin Spacey
  449.  
  450. - Those films have a chance to make it but don't bet

  571. Ok, I saw this film tonight and I thought it was
  572. excellent, 4/5 ... 
  573.  
  574. I have not read the books on which the film is based
  575. but I did read a brief *summary* that was published in
  576. the newspaper here 3 weeks in a row recently so I did
  577. know the basic *plot* and characters (I finally found
  578. out what a "HOBBIT" is ... hehe !)  ;-)
  579.  
  580. The visuals in this movie were really amazing, special
  581. effects, sets, costumes, make up ... Visually it is
  582. really something else and my eyes were almost popping
  583. out of their sockets sometimes ... I liked those big
  584. scary figures on the dark horses, wow, were those guys
  585. frightening or what !!    
  586.  
  587. I was intrigued by the story for the most part
  588. although I felt it was a lil' bit repetitive, battling
  589. demons, making speeches, more battles, more speeches,
  590. seeing the Hobbits's big hairy feet once again, etc.  
  591. ;-)  
  592.  
  593. All the actors were very good too, Viggo Mortensen,
  594. Cate Blanchett, Liv Tyler (I know some people were
  595. saying it would have been awful if she had come along
  596. with the 9 *chosen ones* but I thought it would have
  597. been good, couldn't she have replaced one of THE
  598. HOBBITS, there were 4 of those already !!  Not enough
  599. ELVES, Too many HOBBITS ! ... After all the ELVES were
  600. the *pretty boys*/*pretty girls*, no ??  Eye candy
  601. !(Is that blasphemy !!)  lol !
  602.  
  603. Overall I really enjoyed the film, it was what I
  604. expected from the *barrage* of good reviews written
  605. recently ... I agree with Richard Roeper that the film
  606. was a bit too long for its own good though, by the end
  607. the people in the audience were a lil' *tired* and I
  608. was getting THIRSTY !
  609.  
  610. I could hear 2 annoying lil' kidz near the end
  611. commenting out loud and this was starting to annoy 
  612. me (and others !) *big time* ...  Someone was on
  613. screen after wounded by arrows and the first kid would
  614. say out loud : "So, is he dead now ??" and the other
  615. kid would respond : "Not yet !!" and then they would
  616. giggle ... grrrrrr !! 
  617.  
  618. This is not a film for kidz under 12 years old anyway,
  619. they shouldn't have been in there, it's too graphic,
  620. disturbing and scary for youngsters !!

  649. Ok, I just saw this classic *bad* film for the very
  650. first time ... Woo Hoo !!  This was really TOP QUALITY
  651. filmmaking, wow, I couldn't believe my eyes ! (hehe !)
  652. I thought it was very good, quite amusing ... one of 
  653. Ed Wood's *best* films, no doubt, or one of his
  654. *worst* depends how you look at it !
  655.  
  656. Simple story of some extra-terrestrial BEINGS who want
  657. to take over Earth so they have this plan to RESURRECT
  658. the recently deceased so they will start klling people
  659. ... or sumthin' !  Anyway the plot is not important,
  660. you have to like this one because it's so awful in

  664. scratching his head using his SERVICE PISTOL, than
  665. waving it around, pointing it at things and even other
  666. people while having a chat (Pretty obvious this was
  667. not a *real* one, huh ?)

  669. Shower curtain in the cockpit of an airplane,
  670. obviously fake walls moving as someone bumps into
  671. them, flying saucers that look like metal garbage can
  672. covers hanging from visible strings, headstones moving
  673. in the cemetary as actors walk by, lots of awful
  674. lighting, shawdows of the actors on the walls,
  675. sometimes it's daytime then it's nightime, then
  676. daytime again within seconds, actor replacing Bela
  677. Lugosi due to his death walking around with a huge
  678. cape masking most of his face for 2/3's of the movie
  679. ... This guy cracked me up !! hehe !!

  681. Awful acting and dialogues, but that's what makes it a
  682. fun film to watch, you just can't believe they
  683. actually made something like that ... hehe !!
