Subject: [MV] Duel - 1971
Date: 01 Nov 2001 11:45:14 -0800 (PST)
I think this is one of the best films of the 1970's.
Apparently it was made for less than 500,000$ and one
of Steven Spielberg's first and greatest movies. It
is very intense and even if I have seen it 10 times at
least I still enjoyed it once again just as much as
the first time I saw it at least 15 years ago.
Dennis Weaver is a man who has some "issues" in this
one ... His wife thinks he is a "loser" because he
didn't defend her as a rude guest was pestering her at
a party and he still has to make a long road trip to
go meet a client who is not too happy with his sales
rep services. He must get there to talk to him or he
may lose the account.
Well, it only gets worse once he encounters a trucker
who tries to kill him on the highway, then stalks him,
driving him nuts and endangering his life for no
apparent reason. (He's just crazy, that's the reason
!)
Several times during the film Weaver has a chance to
turn back but he never does, he has to *finally*
become a man and face his personal fears, not find
excuses or ways of getting out of trouble as he is
used to do.
All is not well with him even before the chase begins
but he feels he can succeed and defeat this trucker
anyway despite his rather limited skills as an ACTION
HERO ...
Highly recommended for everyone ... Top notch
thriller.
Trivia : Apparently Spielberg liked this film so much
he watches it once every 6 months.
Bye !

Subject: [MV] The Great Waltz
Date: 01 Nov 2001 23:03:55 -0500
We watched a 63 year old movie on video tonight and it was excellent. The
Great Waltz is the semi accurate life of Johan Strauss. Great music, great
soundtrack. The female singer only made two movies and was nominated for
best supporting actress for this one.
The following is from a review in IMDB:
THE GREAT WALTZ is one of the all-time great musicals with memorable
orchestrations of its magnificent music, beautiful, swirling
cinematography, Luise Rainer at her heartbreaking best and Miliza Korjus
outrageously divine in performance and voice. The plot adroitly mixes
music, smaltz and sentiment with several scenes of heartbreaking, dramatic
power. This movie is an absolute joy, a treasure to be seen and enjoyed
year after year.

Subject: [MV] 1981 + Star Wars
Date: 02 Nov 2001 17:14:43 -0800 (PST)
****** This was an excellent rant, an rather
appropriate since I am watching "STAR WARS" tonight
... That's right, the original film from 1977 ... 24
years old ! ;-)
I had not seen it in 5 years approximately, but I have
to agree that when you hear that music near the
beginning it makes chills go down your spine (oui !)
Certainly a classic !
I plan on seeing THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980 ?)
tomorrow probably ... Can't wait to see YODA of
course, tra-la-la !! ;-) RETURN OF THE JEDI in a
week or two ...
It's a lil' sad though watching these films because
they are so superior to THE PHANTOM MENACE, especially
episode 4 and 5 of course ... ;-( Lucas really
FUMBLED THE FOOTBALL with episode 1, bummer !
Cheers !

Uh, well, I guess we can expect no less from a 11 year old. Never caught
on?? Teddy, where have you been, old bean?? I remember this catching on
quite a bit (tho it was creepy hearing my aunt ask my cousin about her and
her boyfriend "sucking face".... not a phrase for old people, even tho it
worked in the movie). The phrase was big even before the movie.

I do believe that Teddy mentioned every that was in this movie with the
soul EXCEPTION of Jackie Chan. Ruined his US career for a decade and a

****** Yes, you have to wonder about Lucas, does he
know what is going on in the REAL world ?? In my
opinion he sabotaged The Phantom Menace with the
constant BARRAGE of special effects (Including the
awful JAR JAR !) and that wee boy (Jake Lloyd) was
making me cringe often as well ... Without those
annoying elements the film would only have been
"watchable" but adding them to the mix just
ruined the entire film. Now we learn the title of
the next film : "Attack of the Clones" and JAR JAR
will be back, what gives ??
There's

***** hehe ! Well, I haven't seen that so I can't
comment ... I'll take your word for it !! ;-)
> But Lucas goes with him anyway and as the film

**** "Look higher Jake ... JAR JAR's head is gonna be
right over *here* ..." (Pointing !) ... I think
he shouldn't have waited 16 years to make a new one,
it doesn't make any sense, Episode 1 is a prequel yet
technically with all that FLUFF and the special
effects it looks far more advanced technically, Those
effects should be used in a sequel, not a prequel ...
Episode 4-5-6 in 1977-1980-1983
Episode 1-2-3 in 1986-1989-1992
Episode 7-8-9 in 1995-1998-2001 ...
That would have been more reasonable, no ?? Much
better than re-releasing 4 different versions of the
original films with lil' bits changed here and there
for the FANATICS ... like it makes a big difference to
see one of those Sand people on top of a moving beast
instead of from far away, geeesh !
Cheers !

Subject: [MV] Chewbacca - C3PO ...
Date: 03 Nov 2001 11:40:29 -0800 (PST)
Ok, last night I watched STAR WARS : A new hope (1977)
and today it was STAR WARS : The empire strikes back
(1980) ...
I won't talk about the films so much since they have
been discussed already for decades ... ;-)
After watching episode 5 just now I am not so sure it
is a good idea to have characters like C3PO and
especially CHEWBACCA ... In episode 5 Chewbacca takes
a lot of screen time and he is WHINING most of the
times, making howling sounds ... I was getting tired
of hearing his WHINING by the end actually ... grrrr !
Plus C3PO is a lot more silly than in the previous
film as well ... getting dismantled, arguing with the
tiny R2-D2 and all that ... You can see the JAR JAR
BINKS idea germing there ... C3PO taken to the extreme
produces JAR JAR ... it's like a SEED has been
planted, C3PO making jokes or silly comments as the
IMPERIAL TROOPS are firing at the gang using "LASERS"
... I didn't appreciate that part so much ...
Overall the films still work of course, they are great
on a technical level, the stories, the visual effects
... but had C3PO and CHEWBACCA's presence been reduced
dramatically, I think the films would be even better
... They are slightly annoying most of the time
although compared to JAR JAR it's almost a pleasure to
watch their antics.
3.5/5 for each one of the 2 movies.
Bye !

just for fun ! Here's a quick recap of last night's
"Ebert and Roeper at the movies"
Quick one liners a-la DAVID MANNING.
---------------------
"The one" with Jet Li
---------------------
Ebert : "Thumbs down. Not original, predictable, see
this before."
Roeper : "Thumbs down. Jet Li can't speak english
properly so it is distracting."
"Domestic disturbance" with John Travolta
Ebert : "Thumbs down. At first it was intriguing but
then it turned very illogical and clumsy in the 2nd
half. Lame screenplay."
Roeper : "Thumbs down. Classic case of good actors in
an awful film. They blow it. It's ridiculous."
"The man who wasn't there" with Billy Bob Thornton
Ebert : "Thumbs up. The more you like films the more
you will like this one. Great."
Roeper : "Thumbs up. One of the best Coen films.
Top notch acting, writing and directing."
"Amelie" (French film) Directed by Jean-Pierre
Jeunet
---------------------
Ebert : "Thumbs up. I love it. It's a puppy dog of a
movie."
Roeper : "Thumbs up. Marginal recommendation. It
looks like an episode of Ally Mcbeal in part."
"Monsters, inc." with Billy Crystal
Ebert : Thumbs up.
Roeper : Thumbs up.
I don't have quotes for that one because they started
airing the program as it was in progress ... grrrrrrr
!

Marc,
I was reading an editorial on the web criticizing Ebert for choosing
Roeper as Siskel's replacement. The main thrust of the criticsm was
that Roeper agreed far too much with Ebert than Siskel ever did.
Your recap seems to prove the point :)

***** Well, this time they were agreeing on every film
but it's not always like that, I remember maybe 3-4
weeks ago there was an episode where they disagreed on
each and every film they talked about ... or maybe
they only agreed on one, I am not sure but it was
almost a home run in any case !
I like watching the show even if they agree though !

Last night I watched this film, a classic I had seen
several times of course. I had not seen it in 5-7
years though. Good movie in general, at one point I
was thinking I was being a lil' harsh with my previous
3/5 rating ... I was thinking it was worth a 3.5/5 ...
but then the EWOKS kicked in and then I knew ... I
knew why I had PENALIZED the film way back then ...
I mean it was crystal clear !!
The film is good and entertaining but when the EWOKS
appear and act all goofy la-la they bring the movie
down a lil' IMHO.
It's implausible that they would fight imperial troops
like that and defeat them throwing rocks and poorly
made arrows ... They don't have the intelligence, the
strength, to pull this off ... It was almost laughable
... and that very final scene with the EWOKS chanting
and dancing ?? I have to admit I did fast forward a
lil' bit there *shame on me* ! I couldn't take it
anymore seeing them chanting and dancing ...
;-)
Also near the end the dialogues were getting kind of
repetitive, Emperor saying over and over ..."Let
yourself go to the dark side of the Fooooooooorce !"
... brrrrrr ... scary dude !
Did you see his twisted face ?? ;-)
Good work by Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill (?) and Carrie
Fisher as the lovely Princess Leia of course ... 3/5
Cheers !

The new Episode 2 teaser teaser trailer (no, that's not a typo) is out.
And it looks cool so far.

I'm watching this film tonight ... My 2nd time seeing
it, I like it more now which is not so surprising
since when I saw it 6-7 years ago it wasn't the type
of material that intrigued me.
Plus the lovely Kate Winslet is making her debut here
and since then she appeared in a lot of films I found
"ace" : "Quills" "Titanic" "Jude" ... etc., makes me
appreciate her even more in this movie.
Simple story of 2 young girls, around 16-17 years old
... They are friends in High School (in New Zealand !)
and relate a lot, both have physical problems, both
are rather lonely, problems with their parents etc.
They get along well and become best friends fast,
experiencing a lot of different things, growing closer
and closer, fantasizing about medieval times, lesbian
tendancies, etc.
Great acting, nasty ending as the 2 girls become
desperate, not wanting to be separated, etc.
Directed by Peter Jackson who later made THE
FRIGHTENERS I believe.

Date: 09 Nov 2001 19:14:16 -0800
Those of you who have the Episode 1 DVD will know there is a web
exclusive content link on the 2nd disc. Well, they just put up the DVD
exclusive trailer up on a secure website accessible only through the
browser included on the DVD (you must have a PC and internet connection
to view it) so it doesn't work on home dvd players.
Anyways, the trailer is amazing. Padme Amidala sporting a prototype of
the princess Leia ear muff hairdo :-P And hey, no offense to the
ladies on the list, but Natalie Portman is hot :-D
The trailer includes a brief two liner narration at the very beginning,
highly reminiscent of a western, but not so westernish it becomes
corney.

Date: 10 Nov 2001 13:14:07 -0800 (PST)
Ok, here's the weekly RECAP !
Mostly one liners a-la DAVID MANNING. (David Manning
should really make a comeback, I miss him ...) ;-)
"Harry Potter : Philosopher's stone"
Ebert : Thumbs up. "The whole film was surprisingly
good, wonderful and entertaining."
Roeper : Thumbs up. "A complete triumph. Not for tiny
kidz though because some parts are scary. Could be a
wonderful series of films."
"Heist" (Danny Devito, Gene Hackman)
Ebert : Thumbs up. "I liked the complexity of the
story, the characters, the actors. Good dialogues,
funny one liners. Really entertaining."
Roeper : Thumbs down. "Unconvincing caper.
Implausible. False starts, wrong turns. No pay off."
"Shallow Hal" (Gwyneth Paltrow, Jack Black)
Ebert : Thumbs up. "Gwyneth is sweet. Jack is
touching. Good fun for everyone."
Roeper : Thumbs up. "So funny I was laughing out
loud. Pretty smart for a Farrelly brothers film.
They know how to make those comedies."
(They didn't mention how offensive the film is for
overweight people ... but that is only my humble
opinion !! Ebert is not stick thin, I was surprised
he didn't start a lil' rant ...)
"Maze" (Laura Linney)
------------------------
Ebert : Thumbs up. "Marginal pass. Good actors. The
subject matter is original, we don't see films about
the Tourette syndrome very often."
Roeper : Thumbs down. "Artsy and pretentious.
Annoying mess. Botched film."
(I loved how Ebert look annoyed hearing Roeper's
comments ... hehe !!)
Cheers !

"Your friends & neighbors" - 1998 ... directed by Neil
Labute (In the company of men) Very good film about 2
couples, they are friends and meet often ...
They have lots of issues, bickering, cheating, lots of
talks about sex, etc. This was almost like a Woody
Allen film (only better and without the annoying and
neurotic Woody lusting over a 20-something girl !)
;-)
We also meet two of their friends, everybody is lying,
cheating, trying to take advantage of others, being
selfish, etc. Rather depressing ideas !
Great cast and everyone is excellent too. Ben
Stiller, Catherine Keener, Aaron Eckardt, Jason
Patric etc.
Sometimes it is funny but in a rather DARK way.

Subject: [MV] Stella does tricks - 1997
Date: 12 Nov 2001 06:45:45 -0800 (PST)
- "Stella does tricks" - 1997 ... good film with
the lovely KELLY MCDONALD (The cute wee lass in
"Trainspotting", you know the schoolgirl that was Ewan
McGregor's love interest, that was her FILM DEBUT !)
She also appeared in "Entropy", "The loss of sexual
innocence" etc. ... I really like her in general,
great actress and she appears in good films most of
the times, plus she's very cute as well, that doesn't
hurt ! ;-)
In this film she is a girl who has lots of "issues"
... She is a prostitute as you can imagine by the
title ... We meet her pimp, a disgusting old man who
asks her to perform sexual favors in public ... He
keeps several girls "working" on the streets of
GLASGOW in miserable conditions.
She makes a young lad along the way but the guy is a
junkie and only makes her life worse asking her to
sell her lil' body to pay some of his debts. I was
reminded of "SID & NANCY" with Gary Oldman sometimes
... "Sue, lost in Manhattan" was also
on my mind.
Great acting by everyone, it might be hard to digest
for a lot of folks. This is the type of material that
could offend people, scenes of Kelly being raped by
several men as a *punishment* for disobeying her
pimp's orders or being beaten by thugs for example.
We see how she became a prostitute in flashbacks,
being abused by her father who is a lousy stand up
comedian working in shady nightclubs where nobody pays
attention to his act, etc.
Very good movie in general, the UK/Scottish accents
were rather THICK in part though ... Scott (From
Scotland !) would have been required for the
"translation" sometimes, or maybe subtitles would have
been useful !

Hey, I was just reading an OLD newspaper and I
stumbled on a JACK BLACK interview ... here's the
quote :
"I just like good roles, I don't care if they're
leading or supporting, dramatic or funny. They're very
rare. It's hard to find any scripts of high quality
and that's both the most important part of any film
and the hardest part to do."
Source : "The Globe & Mail" 11-9-2001
Now let's look at some of the films he appeared in :
- Demolition man
- Waterworld
- Bio-Dome
- The cable guy
- The fan
- The Jackal (1997)
- I still know what you did last summer
- Cradle will rock
- Saving Silverman
- Shallow Hal
Mmmmmm ... Is he delusional or what ?? I mean his
resume is not as "bad" as David Spade's, Rob
Schneider's or Adam Sandler's ... but still ...
He appeared in a couple of good films recently though,
Jesus' son, High fidelity ... but why follow with
Saving Silverman and Shallow Hal ?

Quick review !
This was a good film about 2 young adults, a brother
and a sister.
One is played by the talented Heather Matarazzo (The
"Welcome to the dollhouse" girl !).
They are waiting in a bus station for the entire movie
actually as the movie begins. We learn along the way
what they are doing there and what happened to them in
the past ... Heather is waiting for a bus that will
take her to a foster home and her borther is taking a
bus that will take him to his new college.
We meet a young man who is also at the bus station and
claims he was at the same school as Heather but she
has no idea who he is ... He likes to listen to
strangers' conversations without being noticed and
then makes up "stories" he tells to Heather ...
Imagining who those people are and what they were
doing bases on a few words he overhears...
One of his stories is about a young woman who falls in
love with a gambler, the other is about another young
woman who marries an older man who is abusive to his
son ...
The 3rd story involves Heather herself and she is the
one telling it, disclosing what happened in her life,
how her parents are drunken fools who used to be
ballroom dancers and her father was abusive ...
Nothing really spectacular but it is well acted, the
characters and the dialogues are intriguing as well
... 3/5
Roger Ebert and James Berardinelli both give the film
a 3/4 rating)

I just finished watching this film ... I thought it
was excellent ! Classic movie with Terence Stamp
(Wow, he looks YOUNG ! I was reminded of Anthony
Perkins in "Psycho" !)
He is a young lad who works as a clerk in a bank, all
the other employees make fun of him because he looks
and acts so *straight-laced* and likes to collect
butterflies ... One day he wins a huge amount of money
playing the lottery so he quits his job and devotes
all his time to his butterfly collection ...
He then becomes infatuated with a lovely young woman
(Samantha Eggar) he sees on the street one day. He
starts following her around in his car, watching her
every move. He buys an old house in the english
countryside, remote area with few neighbours and
actually kidnaps the wee lass, keeping her in the
basement of the house under lock and key.
This was an excellent film about a kidnapping, only
two characters basically ... Stamps wants the young
woman to love him, he tries to be nice, preparing her
meals, acting friendly and of course she doesn't want
to have anything to do with him, trying to escape or
trick Stamps any way she can ... Great character
development tale, good actors, dialogues ... A
classic.

Date: 17 Nov 2001 13:28:08 -0800 (PST)
Ok, here's the weekkly recap of the program !
"Sidewalks of New York" (Edward Burns, Heather
Graham)
------------------------
Ebert : Thumbs up : "It's one thing to cheat on your
wife with your mistress, it's another thing to cheat
on your mistress with your wife. Good material, the
release should not have been delayed sue to the 9-11
attacks."
Roeper : Thumbs up : " This looks like a Woody allen
film and there's nothing wrong with that. Wonderful
cast. It's a love letter to NY.
**** Note : I agree it looked like a Woody Allen film,
especially when Stanley Tucci who is in his 40's was
flirting with a teenage girl, I guess he has the Woody
Allen role. ;-) Isn't Ed Burns making the same
films all the time ?? Brother McMullen, No looking
back, etc. etc.
"In the bedroom" : (Sissy Spacek, Marisa Tomei)
---------------
Ebert : Thumbs up : "One of the best films of the
year. Truthful and intimate."
Roeper : Thumbs up : "Oscar quality performances by
the actors. Realistic dialogues. Lots of tension, a
powerful film."
"Novocaine" : (Steve Martin, Laura Dern)
-----------
Ebert : Thumbs up : "I liked the light and dark humor
and the way the plot was twisting around."
Roeper : Thumbs down : "Helena Bonham Carter is not
pretty in this film, I couldn't believe Martin would
fall in love with her, she looked better in "Planet of
the apes" (laughing !). She wasn't a sexpot, she was
a crackpot. Lots of annoying and bizarre characters,
I felt as if I was left out of the party."
***** I agree, Ms. Carter didn't look too good in that
film, but she was more attractive than in "Planet of
the apes", that's a cheap shot ! hehe !
"Tape" : (Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke)
-------
Ebert : Thumbs up : "Suspense building up all the
time. Good actors, talented people on the screen.
Looks like a Mamet play in part."
Roeper : Thumbs up : "Powerful and disturbing.
Provocative. Thurman is unforgettable in this role."
"The endurance" (Documentary, narrated by Liam Neeson)
--------------
Ebert : Thumbs up : "Amazing film about an expedition
to Antartica in the 1920's. We get to know the people
really well, even the dogs on the ship."
Roeper : Thumbs up : "Terrific film. Worth seeking out
and it's not boring even if it's a documentary. The
footage looks great even the one shot in the 1920's."
Cheers !

I watched that film the other day ... I thought it was
very good too (3.5/5) ... They remade it in the mid
1990's with Kim Basinger, Alec Baldwin, Michael Madsen
... (2.5/5 for that version !)
The original is better as is often the case, not sure
why because the story is really the same, there were
even a few silly bits in the remake I thought had been
added by the director but no ... they are just not as
silly in the original movie ! They added a couple of
sexy scenes in the remake to cash in on Ms. Basinger's
impressive female charms but 90% plus of the films are
similar.
Simple story of a convict (The Tao of Steve himself
... Steve McQueen, I mean is this guy cool or what ??
You see him on screen and he has an incredible
PRESENCE, few actors these days have that !! A KOOL
KAT !!)
He asks his lovely wife to go see the prison officials
so that he can get paroled early and then after he is
released he is contacted by his former employers ...
Crooks who want him to rob a bank because he owes them
for some reason ... Of course things go horribly wrong
... ;-(
Great acting, story, dialogues ... I wonder why I
don't like the remake so much ... maybe because
instead of STEVE MCQUEEN it's ALEC BALDWIN in the
lead ? He's not so bad but compared to The tao of
Steve he's really in the minor leagues !!
Cheers !

Subject: [MV] Chasing sleep - 2000

Wow, I saw this film tonight and it's really an
amazing one ... 4.5/5 (In my Top 5 for 2000 !)
It's the best film you never heard of (probably !)
You mix 3 parts of "Memento" with one part of "Lost
Highway", add one part of "Requiem for a dream", a
pinch of "Frantic" and "Insomnia" ... mix 'em up and
you end up with this film. It's almost a direct
bull's eye iun any case. I just love those twisted
claustrophobic thrillers.
Simple story of a college professor who has real
"issues" ... Jeff Daniels is the lad and he wakes up
in the middle of the night as the film begins ...
He notices right away that his wife his not in bed
with him, she is missing ... So of course he gets up
and tries calling her friends, the hospital, the
police ... trying to find out where she is and what
happened to her ...
The entire film is set in that house actually, not one
scene set anywhere else, almost like in "The Shining"
although in that one there were a few scenes set
outside the hotel and on location ... I was reminded
of many films while watching "Chasing sleep" as I
mentioned before, but they are all great ones so I
guess that's positive !
Anyway, Daniels is really messed up and has a lot of
problems sleeping too, stressed out, popping sleeping
pills, worrying about his wife ...
He meets police investigator who question him and
starts unvovering evidence that makes it seem as if
she was the victim of foul play, having an affair ...
I won't mention a whole lot more about the plot but I
think it's really terrific, twisted, bizarre tale in
part as the guy is hallucinating due to his lack of
sleep ...
Great acting and dialogues ... I couldn't believe how
good this small budget film was, out of the blue !
4.5/5
My top 10 for 2000 right now :
1-Requiem for a dream 4.5
2-Memento 4.5
3-Chasing sleep 4.5
4-Cast away 4
5-American psycho 4
6-The gift 4
7-Traffic 4
8-Best in show 4
9-Amores perros 4
10-The cell 4

Subject: [MV] Blow - 2001
Date: 20 Nov 2001 08:31:41 -0800 (PST)
This is the story of George Jung who was responsible
for a lot of the drug traffic between South America
and the United States in the late 70's-early 80's ...
Johnny Depp is good as the smuggler and it is
interesting to watch him playing this role too.
I really like him, he can play all sorts of roles,
from the undercover cop in "Donnie Brasco" to a
criminal in "Blow" ... ;-) Plus in this film he has
to play the character at 20-30-40-50 years old, a lot
of physical tranformations of course ! (whacky
hairstyles especially, from THE BEATLES, To MICK
JAGGER, To BON JOVI !)
The film could have been better though because
sometimes it was a lil' repetitious and superficial,
not really showing us precisely what was happening and
how they were managing to smuggle all that cocaine in
the US ... This could be the director's fault, Ted
Demme is no Martin Scorsese ... Scorsese could have
made this film a lot better naturally.
Remember "Goodfellas" ?? That extra long scene when
we follow Ray Liotta on a "typical day", preparing a
sauce, hiding guns in trash cans, watching the sky for
helicopters chasing him ... Wow ... That is one of the
best sequences ever filmed IMHO. The same type of
material would have improved "Blow" a great deal.
Some people were saying Penelope Cruz was awful ...
mmmmmmm ... yes, her character was silly,
unreasonable, over the top and had a huuuuuuuge
spanish accent when she was talking ... Again, I think
this is the director's fault, I think she was told to
act in such a wild way and talked like that on purpose
... I heard her in interviews and her accent is not as
prominent usually. This was a mistake though as it
made some of her lines almost comical, nothing major
in any case, just slightly annoying !
I also liked the performance of Paul Reubens as the
gay
hairdresser who was Depp's partner in crime. Ray
Liotta was good as Jung's dad, they had a special
relationship. Rachel Griffiths constant yelling and
bickering was annoying though but since it is based on
a true story I guess Jung's mother really was such an
ogre.
3.5/5, it was very good but could easily have been
improved as well (i.e. Scorsese instead of Ted Demme
!)
Cheers !

Subject: [MV] Enemy At The Gates - 2001
Date: 23 Nov 2001 14:04:55 -0800 (PST)
I watched this film the other night ... good movie in
general, 3.5/5 ... The so-called romantic triangle
aspect could easily have been edited out though, same
as in Pearl Harbor for example, why add a romantic
subplot, isn't the story intriguing enough ? It's
such a CLICHE ! ;-)
Jude Law is good as the main RUSSIAN sniper (Vassili)
fighting against the Germans in the pivotal battle at
Leningrad in 1943. The Germans were trying to take
over this city that was such a KEY point due to its
location (It was slightly annoying to hear all those
RUSSIAN and GERMAN characters talking in english
though ... I would enjoy a film like this with unknown
Russian and German actors plenty of subtitles
actually).
Rachel Weisz is Jude Law's so-called love interest,
working for the Russian army as a translator/soldier
... Some people were making fun of the lovemaking
scene in the middle of the film ... Well, it was a
rather unusual scene, making love as they are laying
down among sleeping soldiers, trying to be extra quiet
... They could have found a more PRIVATE place
probably but then it wouldn't have been so original !
;-)
Ed Harris is the Big Kahuna in the German camp, expert
sniper who is brought in to take out Jude Law since
he's quickly becoming a Russian war hero and killing
more than his share of German officers.
The opening sequence was amazing, almost as impressive
as the beginning of "Saving Private Ryan".
Explosions, gunfire, planes attacking the soldiers on
the boat, blood & guts, shrappnel (spelling ?) tearing
the soldiers to pieces, etc.
Good performances by all the actors ... technically
the film is impressive with lots of battle sequences,
tense scenes as the two snipers are playing a deadly
cat-and-mouse game.
Jean-Jacques Annaud directed the film with a lot of
*PANACHE* and managed to create lots of intriguing
moments, especially when the snipers are *toying* with
each other. It may have been a lil' bit on the
long-ish side at 2 hours 12 minutes though.
3.5/5

Subject: [MV] Ebert & Roeper'ed - Nov. 24
Date: 24 Nov 2001 13:24:40 -0800 (PST)
Ok, this week's show was a special about patriotic
films ... uplifting tales, etc.
I won't list many comments since they were basically
saying for each film how "ace" they were ... Thumbs up
for each and everyone of those !
Here's the list of films that were discussed :
- The general - 1927 ... Ebert was saying this was one
of the best films of all times ... Mmmmmmm ... I
haven't seen it but it looked extremely dated, not
even sure I would give it a thumbs up !! ;-)
- The great escape - 1963 ... I saw it and gave the
film a 3.5/5, The NAZIS weren't NASTY enough as I said
in my review, they showed a clip of a NAZI watching
over a misbehavin' prisoner and doing NUTHIN'
basically.
- Oklahoma ! - 1955 ... Not seen, but I was cringing
though watching the clips, I don't like most musicals
so I doubt I would enjoy this one !!
- Thirteen days - 2000 ... 3.5/5, Very good film, I
saw it recently.
- The right stuff - 1983 ... Mmmmmm ... I only saw
part of this and wasn't so impressed ... I would like
to see entirely once, Ebert was saying it was his
favorite film that year.
- Bound for glory - 1976 ... Not seen
- The american president - 1995 ... Good movie, 3/5
... but why have that one in a show like this ? It's
really not so remarkable !
- Grand canyon - 1991 ... Not seen ... this looked
really good though, I'll note the title down.
- The new land ... Not seen
- My family - 199? ... 3.5/5
- The Producers - Not seen.
- Mash - 1970 .. Not seen, I've never seen an episode
of the TV series either ! ;-)
- The emigrants .. Not seen ...
..........
New releases will be reviewed next week ...
They forgot to mention one of the greatest television
moments last week ... This was such a wonderful clip I
saw ...
It could have been titled : "US Prez petting a giant
turkey at the White House" ... Now that was
A_M_A_Z_I_N_G !!! Did you see that bird on the table,
one of the greatest moments in TELEVISION HISTORY !!
;-) (Gobble ! Gobble !)
Cheers !

Great Rogers and Hammerstein musical beautifully done. Even if you dont
like musicals you'll probably like this one.

Pretty good film about the cuban missile crisis, definitely worth seeing.

It was an OK film but would not be in my top 100 for the year.

Annette Bening is total mesmerizing in this one. She just lights up the screen.
>- The Producers - Not seen.
In my top ten movies of all time list. Classic Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder
is also great. The gentleman who plays the play write is superb also.

Subject: [MV] Ali'ed - A rant about the trailer.
Date: 28 Nov 2001 11:01:55 -0800 (PST)
Ok, talking about trailers ...
Well, one that doesn't impress me is the "Ali" trailer
... I really doubt this will be a great film
actually, well, for me ...
The main reason is I have seen so many documentaries
about THE GREATEST BOXER OF ALL TIMES that it's
impossible to impress me, I saw Will Smith in the
trailer, of course he looks Ali-ish but it's
imposssible to really *look* like him ... and when he
talks, well, I keep thinking about THE REAL ONE and no
matter how hard he tries, Smith just doesn't sound
like him, it might be the same words, it just seems
like an IMITATION the whole time ...
Plus the real ALI was cocky, prententious, loud mouth
... that was fine, I mean it was like he was playing
ALI X 10 when the cameras were rolling ... Seeing
Smith doing the same thing is almost cringe inducing,
like he's showing up at the premiere of Wild Wild West
in a lil' Cowboy outfit, you know, he's showing off
too but for different reasons ...
The fact I always thought of him as a minor repellent
probably influences me, so any other actor would have
been fine, I would probably look forward to the film
more if it was an unknown actor, or someone who is not
so *big time* ... would make the pill easier to
swallow !
I am interested in seeing the film of course and it
may be a good one, but it bothers me how I keep
thinking of THE REAL PERSON while seeing Smith trying
to imitate him on screen.
Cheers, Ali.

Marc,
I actually agree. If you've studied someone long and hard enough,
any attempt at a movie that is going to be 2, or 3 hours in length will
have to be very good to impress you.

I have a nine copies of Cinemania 96 for Win95 on CD, still in shrinkwrap
for sale. $10 or 3 for $25 plus $4 shipping.
I don't expect to see advertising in the list but thought members might
like a shot at them first at half price ($5 each plus shipping).
IMDB hasn't caught up to this yet . It's a shame they no longer market or
support it.
