  5. Ok, I watched this classic FILM NOIR !!
  6.  
  7. I thought it was good, 3/5, but I was expecting more
  8. since many people are saying it is really terrific,
  9. one of the best FILM NOIR of all times  etc.  It was
  10. still quite good but suspension of disbelief is
  11. certainly required in part and the middle section is
  12. not so fun to watch ...
  13.  
  14. Humphrey Bogart is a CONVICT who escapes from San
  15. Quentin prison in the first scene, the camera acts as
  16. his eyes so we see everything from his point of view
  17. only for a good part of the film (I liked that so I
  18. was sorry they gave up on this technique after 30
  19. minutes or so, I guess we really NEEDED to see
  20. Bogart's face !)

  22. Bogart was convicted of killing his wife by hitting
  23. her over the head with an ashtray, of course he's
  24. innocent so he's on the run now and trying to find out
  25. who REALLY killed her while the whole city is looking
  26. for him ... his face is plastered all over the
  27. newspapers so he needs to have plastic surgery at 
  28. one point ... 
  29.  
  30. He is aided in his quest by the lovely LAUREN BACALL,
  31. wowo, she's a lil' cutie in that one and helps Bogart,
  32. hiding him in her apartment, buying him new clothes so
  33. he looks more RESPECTABLE, etc.
  34.  
  35. The acting was good (especially Bacall) and the story
  36. intriguing in general, some plot twists are rather
  37. implausible though but overall I would say it was a
  38. very watchable classic (I saw the glorious
  39. black-and-white version but I know there is a
  40. colorised version available too !)

  67. Ok, I watched a couple of oldies recently ... 
  68. quick comments !

  71. - Coma (1978),  It was my first time seeing this
  72. thriller, based on a Robin Cook book, I thought it was
  73. very good and suspenseful, good story, acting,
  74. dialogues, Genevieve Bujold is a doctor in a huge
  75. Boston hospital who starts investigating some cases
  76. where young adults never wake up after minor surgeries
  77. ... Michael Douglas has a smaller part as her
  78. boyfriend, he's also a doctor but thinks Bujold is out
  79. of her mind and paranoid (at least for the bulk of the
  80. movie !)   3.5/5

  83. - Ruthless people  (1986)  I think it was my 3rd time
  84. seeing this one, I had not watched it in 5 years at
  85. least though, I like this dark comedy ... Bette Midler
  86. is kidnapped by Judge Reinhold, he wants 500,000$ from
  87. her rich husband, Danny Devito ... The problem is the
  88. husband was already planning of getting rid of Midler
  89. so he doesn't want to pay the ransom, in fact he does
  90. his best to have his wife killed ... Things don't go
  91. smoothly of course, Fairly amusing comedy.  3.5/5

  117. Ok, I just watched this film ... 2/5

  119. Wow, I have to say I was surprised at how bad it was,
  120. a lot of times I was laughing out loud, not because it
  121. was amusing and/or funny, I was laughing *at* the
  122. film, you see !  I couldn't believe it !
  123.  
  124. I wouldn't say it is one of the worst films of the
  125. year though, I mean some of the stunts and action
  126. scenes were alright, the make up jobs on the apes were
  127. impressive as well ... nothing wrong *there* ... Good
  128. sound effects, cinematography, sets, etc.  Those
  129. aspects were making the movie more watchable ... but
  130. as soon as they tried *telling the story* it was
  131. turning to the ridiculous mode.  
  132.  
  133. It has to be one of the weakest films of the year in
  134. terms of storyline and characters though ... The story
  135. was simply boring me for the most part, and when I
  136. wasn't bored I was thinking how silly it was ... It
  137. would be a good example of a big budget film with a
  138. story that goes nowhere actually ... 
  139.  
  140. I was actually thinking of "Armageddon" while watching
  141. this, same deal, good special effects, loud film, weak
  142. story, characters that make me cringe ! ... 
  143. Other titles that come to mind : "Wild wild west" ,
  144. "Waterworld", "Godzilla", "Deep impact" ... 
  145.  
  146. I thought the human characters were especially
  147. ridiculous, Mark Whalberg is doing his best, it's not
  148. his fault really, any actor playing this part wold be
  149. in trouble ... Then you have "The Barbie doll" who is
  150. in a lot of scenes as "window dressing", right there
  151. in the background doing nuthin' except looking pretty
  152. ... (She was doing a good job in that department at
  153. least !) 
  154.  
  155. On the Apes' side, Helena Bonham-Carter was making me
  156. laugh with her antics, totally awful !  Tim Roth was
  157. good although he was always playing the same (angry)
  158. note and why wasn't he able to kill Whalberg ??  He
  159. seems to have super-human ... oops ... super-ape
  160. strenght, he unleashes hell on Whalberg and the pretty
  161. boy only has a lil' cut on his face at the end of the
  162. film .. please ! ... Same with Michael Clarke-Duncan,
  163. Paul Giamatti, etc.

  165. I can't believe they want to make a sequel to this one
  166. ??  Pleaaaaaaase ... noooooooo !!  Don't believe the
  167. hype next time !

  228. Ok, I don't have a lot of time, it's quite late so
  229. I'll only write a few lines about this one ... I
  230. thought it was a very good film in general, better
  231. than I expected, 3.5/5  
  232.  
  233. I thought the film was getting better and better along
  234. the way too, rather slow start, but once they get to
  235. the castle and deliver the princess from the dragon,
  236. it's quite a fun ride !  Impressive visuals in that
  237. section too, fireballs, close calls, etc.

  239. Plenty of amusing jokes, and also lines of dialogues,
  240. I laughed out loud a few times actually ... The people
  241. voicing the characters were all good too, even Eddie
  242. Murphy who usually annoys me ... 
  243.  
  244. He's a lil' annoying in this one but that was the
  245. donkey character that was like that really so it
  246. worked out well ... I appreciated Mike Myers as the
  247. green ogre, Cameron Diaz as the lovely Princess Elaine
  248. (oops, Fiona !)  *winking* ... and also John Lithgow
  249. as the mini prince who wanted to be king at all costs
  250. ...

  252. Fine story ... it was a lil' sappy la-la in part but
  253. since it was an animated film I wasn't so surprised !
  254. I was tapping my feet during the songs at the end

  504. I recently saw two fine movies. "Swordfish" has a truly great and surprising 
  505. beginning. I rented the video for two reasons that can be explained in one 
  506. phrase: "Halle Berry topless". The entire movie was very well done. Someone 
  507. could criticize something about the plot but if the viewer cuts it a little 
  508. slack, it is a very enjoyable movie. After the movie ends, the video shows a 
  509. second ending that I think is much better than the movie's original ending 
  510. and it shows how some of the stunts were done. This additional footage 
  511. greatly increases the value of this video. I also saw "GI Jane" and it 
  512. immediately earned a place among my top ten movies of all time. The cast, the 
  513. acting and the plot were great. The movie manipulated my mind and my emotions 
  514. but it was certainly an unforgettable fun ride. Both John Travolta and Demi 
  515. Moore moved up on my list of favorite stars as the result of my seeing these 
  516. two movies. I already was a fan of Travolta's work in movies ranging from 
  517. "Saturday Night Fever" to "Grease" to "Get Shorty" but "Swordfish" showed how 
  518. his range as an actor increased. He was perfect for this film. I recommend 
  519. seeing every movie that was mentioned in this message.

  550. Ok, last night I went to the movies ... It was the
  551. first time I went to this new theater where they
  552. present films that were released 2-3 months ago for
  553. bargain prices, 1.60$US for the ticket, you can't beat
  554. that !  ;-) I saw "Heist" and then "K-Pax" almost back
  555. to back ...
  556.  
  557. "Heist" was very good, 3.5/5 ... nothing really
  558. incredibly original but it was well made.  Simple
  559. story of a group trying to steal gold from an airplane
  560. (a lil' hard to swallow, but whatever !)
  561.  
  562. It starred Gene Hackman as the leader of the gang,
  563. Danny DeVito as the crime boss who hires the *crew* 
  564. to do the job ...Rebecca Pidgeon as Hackman's lovely
  565. *wife* ... His *wife* ??  I mean come on, she looks
  566. more like his daughter, 30 year difference at least !

  568. Hard to swallow she would really be in love with the
  569. old man !  
  570.  
  571. Delroy Lindo has plenty of good one liners as 
  572. well ... The actors were good and the dialogues were
  573. interesting of course since it's based on a DAVID
  574. MAMET script ... so you know there will be a few
  575. doublecrossings as well !
  576.  
  577. The film was shot near here, Montreal (Canada) was
  578. posing as Boston ... I recognized some of the
  579. locations too, Mirabel airport where they steal the
  580. gold bars, been there a few times, also near the end
  581. we see the Jacques-Cartier bridge in the background !
  582. hehe !  ;-)

  584. I didn't appreciate the fact there was a F.L. in the
  585. audience though, a *Frequent Laugher*, you see
  586. everytime there was something mildly amusing on the
  587. screen this guy would laugh out loud as if it was the
  588. funniest thing he had ever heard ... Maybe it's me who
  589. is not easily amused but lines of dialogues that were
  590. *only* making me smile a little were having a much
  591. bigger *effect* on the bugger ... oh well !

  652. I saw this film last Friday night, I thought it was
  653. good material, nothing really so special but I had a
  654. good time, 3/5 ... 
  655.  
  656. I also appreciated the fact that the audience was 
  657. a lil' more *mature* than the one that was watching
  658. "Heist" a few hours earlier, no FREQUENT LAUGHER, the
  659. noise level was kept to a minimum, etc.
  660. It's really not the importance of the crowd that makes
  661. a difference as there was probably twice as many
  662. people for "K-Pax" yet it was more quiet and relaxed
  663. ... ;-)

  665. Kevin Spacey stars as PROT, a man (or is he really an
  666. alien ?)  who claims he is from outer space, a planet
  667. called K-Pax located a thousand light years away from
  668. Earth ... Of course Jeff Bridges who is the
  669. psychiatrist treating him doesn't believe that for 
  670. 2 seconds and thinks he is suffering from some kind 
  671. of mental illness ... ;-(
  672.  
  673. We get to meet plenty of the other patients in the
  674. hospital, it reminded me of "One flew over the
  675. cuckoo's nest" in part ... only it's not as good of
  676. course !  Several weird characters in that place ! 
  677. Bridges is really interested in Spacey since the
  678. bugger starts talking about things only experts would
  679. know ... he also has a fruit fetish. 
  680.  
  681. Bridges neglects his pretty wife (Mary McCormack, yum
  682. yum, nice and curveous !! I mean Bridges really has
  683. *issues* to sleep in his office overnight instead of
  684. going home, let me tell you !  Maybe he should be the
  685. one in *treatment* for leaving a lovely wee lass like
  686. that by herself all the time and spending endless
  687. hours with mental patients instead !)  ;-)
  688.  
  689. Of course along the way Spacey starts helping the
  690. doctor and other patients too, getting him to think in
  691. a different way about his wife, his daughters and
  692. especially his son who is a rebel-without-a-cause in a
  693. college away from home ... Bridges proves he could
  694. have been quite an investigator as well since he finds
  695. out a whole lot about Spacey within just a few days (I
  696. would have liked it more had they kept some of those
  697. secrets actually !)
  698.  
  699. Fine acting and dialogues, I was thinking 3.5/5 for a
  700. good part of the movie but it was a lil' bit too long
  701. in my opinion and they revealed too much near the end
  702. as well about Spacey's *real* life and the explanation
  703. for his weird behavior ... 3/5
  704.

  707.  
  708. Next up for me "With a friend like Harry", a lil'
  709. French thriller.  ("Harry, un ami qui vous veut du

  783. This was a pretty good French thriller, 3.5/5 ... The
  784. only actor in the cast I recognized was Sergi Lopez,
  785. he plays a guy who is seriously disturbed.

  787. When  the movie begins we meet a man in his mid 30's
  788. who is married and has 3 wee daughters, they are
  789. travelling, going to a house they bought in the
  790. country for a  mini-vacation ... the husband and wife
  791. are fighting, the kids are yelling and crying, the
  792. works ... 
  793.  
  794. They get to a rest-stop where the man accidentally
  795. meets Sergi's character in the bathroom ... Sergi
  796. recognizes him imediately even if the last time he saw
  797. him was 20 years ago when they were in High School ...
  798.  
  799.  
  800. Sergi develops a strange fixation with the man and
  801. starts following him around, bringing his fiancΘe of
  802. course and acting in a friendly but rather odd way
  803. sometimes *fixing up* the life of this man he just met
  804. by accident, the problem is he is fixing up his life
  805. by getting rid of people who annoy him or doing things
  806. that are really strange, like buying him a new 4X4
  807. when his run down car breaks down for example ... he
  808. says it's a *gift* ... ;-)  
  809.  
  810. I was thinking 4/5 for the bulk of the movie but I
  811. don't care so much for the last third, it gets a lil'
  812. too bizarre there even if it's highly watchable of
  813. course ... 3.5/5.  Good acting and  dialogues, some
  814. parts made me think of THE VANISHING, the original
  815. French movie of course, not the american remake with
  816. Jeff Bridges.

  849. Last night I watched this very good low budget film
  850. ... Anyone who likes REQUIEM FOR A DREAM should try to
  851. see that one as well ... 
  852.  
  853. I didn't know any of the actors in advance but the
  854. story was quite intriguing in general ... Simple story
  855. of a young paramedic, he's just starting on the job
  856. after moving to Los Angeles, California ...He is
  857. teamed up with a guy who has a few years of experience
  858. ... showing him the ropes, etc.  
  859.  
  860. The problem is the *mentor* is really terrible, he
  861. takes drugs while on the job driving the ambulance,
  862. drinks, uses heroin, buys from dealers during working
  863. hours, stealing from patients and even sexually
  864. assaulting a young woman as she is unconscious in the
  865. back of the ambulance  etc.  
  866.  
  867. Of course the young guy doesn't like this behavior but
  868. slowly but surely he is going down the same path ...
  869. Taking drugs due to the stress of this job and
  870. destroying his life and his relationship with a lovely
  871. nurse along the way ...
  872.  
  873. 3.5/5 mainly because the film is too short for its own
  874. good, it only lasts 92 minutes so the characters
  875. development is not optimal, had the film been longer,
  876. maybe 120 minutes, adding nasty bits here and there,
  877. getting to know the main character more, it would have
  878. been a sure shot for a 4/5 ... The ending feels
  879. *rushed* ... minor sub-plot about a drug deal that
  880. goes horribly wrong !

  882. Still highly recommended if you like those types of
  883. films ... Requiem for a dream, Sid & Nancy ... even
  884. Boogie nights in part !

  915. and Roses", directed by Ken Loach !  4/5  It's #12 in
  916. my "Top films of 2000" list so I really enjoyed it ...
  917. Highly recommended !

  919. Simple story of a young Mexican woman who crosses the
  920. border and enters the United States illegally ... She
  921. wants to have a better life and is willing to work
  922. hard to achieve her goals.  She is living with her
  923. sister and her family who have been in the USA for
  924. several years and told her to come over so she could
  925. work in a bar.  
  926.  
  927. She doesn't like that job at all because of the rowdy
  928. drunken customers so she soon quits and starts working
  929. in a building where she is part of the crew hired to
  930. clean up the place after hours.
  931.  
  932. We get to meet her family, her co-workers ... see 
  933. how hard she is working for very lil' money ...
  934. struggling to make ends meet.  One day she meets a
  935. young man who is an union representative and he gets
  936. her to start a protest so all the workers there can
  937. get better working conditions, health insurance,
  938. better salaries, etc.
  939.  
  940. Very good acting, dialogues, the ending is also quite
  941. appropriate (certainly not *Hollywood-ish*). Ken Loach
  942. is so great directing those tales where people have to
  943. struggle to survive on a daily basis too ... Low
  944. budget film, hand held cameras ... some parts are in
  945. Spanish with subtitles.

  980. and interesting though but it still is not something 
  981. I would like to see more than once ...

  983. We get to meet the different girls ... See what they
  984. are going through, who they hang out with after hours,
  985. arguing for the clients' attention and money, dealing
  986. with the OGRE running the club, etc.  It's mostly a
  987. character development film as there is hardly any
  988. *real* story ...

  990. The acting was ok, the girls were very sexy too,
  991. nudity and explicit dance numbers, *extras* for the
  992. most generous "customers", the works.  Jennifer Tilly
  993. appears and at first I didn't even recognize her with
  994. that special wig she had on but when she started
  995. talking I realized it was her, you know she has a
  996. special voice !  ;-)  Sandra Oh and Darryl Hannah
  997. appear as well ...
  998.  
  999. It proves my theory that it takes more than cute girls
  1000. to make a good film though, you need an intriguing
  1001. story and/or characters as well, I mean there must be
  1002. 6-8 great looking women in this film and they often
  1003. walk around half dressed but I was still a bit bored
  1004. in general.  ;-(

  1032. Ok, I watched this nice documentary the other night
  1033. ... Grim subject matter as the film is about a tiny
  1034. (and twisted !)  man who repairs/builds death penalty
  1035. execution machines ... 
  1036.  
  1037. We get to see his "shop" where he works on the death
  1038. devices, films of him strapped to an electric chair as
  1039. he is "trying it out" ... etc. Says he builds electric
  1040. chairs with nice big seats so that they are more
  1041. *comfortable* and that he wanted to install a TV set
  1042. next to the machine so the convict could watch
  1043. something on Tv while waiting (It would be cruel to
  1044. make him watch a wall, no ?) 
  1045.  
  1046. He's all proud of his work and mentions how he
  1047. repaired the electric chair at a prominent Tennessee
  1048. (sp. ?) prison ... How he's working on a lethal
  1049. injection machine, etc.  
  1050.  
  1051. It's all very interesting, learning about executions
  1052. that didn't go as planned, possible ghostly
  1053. appearances on a picture he took ... We see this weird
  1054. *white shadow* on the picture right beside the
  1055. electric chair, looked like a FREAKIN' GHOST, man !
  1056. ;-)
  1057.  
  1058. The 2nd half of the movie concentrates on the guy's
  1059. trip to old NAZI DEATH CAMPS in Poland ... He has been
  1060. hired by a fellow who believes that the Holocaust is a
  1061. hoax and that millions of Jews didn't die in gas
  1062. chambers over there during WWII ... The fellow is on 
  1063. a rampage there, taking samples, having them analyzed,
  1064. writing a report, etc.  
  1065.  
  1066. This gets him into big trouble as you're not supposed
  1067. to hammer away in those special (sacred) places and
  1068. take rocks and samples back home after hours, not to
  1069. mention he firmly believes that there were no
  1070. executions performed there because he can't find any
  1071. traces of cyanide poison (That can be explained
  1072. according to experts, the traces could have been
  1073. destroyed by the way the samples were collected,
  1074. HAMMERING on the walls !)
  1075.  
  1076. So he gets from being an expert hired by many
  1077. different prisons to repair/replace their execution
  1078. equipment to living in a shady motel after losing
  1079. everything (Mainly due to his "Leuchter report" on the
  1080. gas chambers in Poland that was so controversial !)
  1081.  
  1082. Good material in general, I appreciated watching this
  1083. film ... the fellow is intriguing and often uses dark
  1084. humor too, making jokes as he is strapped to an
  1085. electric chair or describing how if he had to be
  1086. executed the electric chair would certainly be the
  1087. best way to go (as long as you use one he has built of
  1088. course, cos' they are so *efficient* !)

  1414. Ok, I watched this film earlier tonight, I had rented it
  1415. based on a strong recommendation from Mr. Michael
  1416. SCRUTCHIN, known WORLDWIDE for his love of gory low budget
  1417. horror films !
  1418.  
  1419. Well, I can't say I was really so impressed with "Ginger
  1420. Snaps" ... It's not terrible material but I wouldn't watch
  1421. it again either ...  
  1422.  
  1423. Low budget horror film, a werewolf attacks a 16 year old
  1424. girl one night in the park as she is walking with her
  1425. cheeky sister.  Of course she then starts transforming
  1426. slowly but surely into a werewolf and attacking people who
  1427. annoy her and her beloved sister of course.  To avoid
  1428. becoming a werewolf she finds out she has to be injected
  1429. with a mix of water and herbs (That was rather ridiculous
  1430. actually !)  ;-) 
  1431.  
  1432. The problem with this film is the entire middle section,
  1433. the beginning and the ending are quite good but that's only
  1434. 30-35 minutes of good material there, not enough to carry
  1435. the film all the way up to a 3/5 considering all the so-so
  1436. scenes in the middle, I would describe as "mediocre" some
  1437. of the scenes in the middle of the film actually.
  1438.  
  1439. The acting wa so-so, Mr. Scrutchin may have been influenced
  1440. by the rather CURVEOUS actress in the lead ... hum hum !
  1441. The special effects were very *cheap* too in part and you
  1442. could tell it was all *fake* often when the werewolf was
  1443. attacking people ... 
  1444.  
  1445. A few good suspenseful moments near the end actually
  1446. brought this film back to a 2.5/5 for me as I almost had my
  1447. mind set it would end up at 2/5 but then the ending kicked
  1448. in and it was getting better in the last 15 minutes ... Too
  1449. little too late unfortunately.  ;-(   (At least it was
  1450. better than "An american werewolf in Paris" that was made
  1451. with 10 times more money probably !)

  1478. Ok, I am just back from a nice lil' art house movie theater
  1479. that just opened  ;-)   I am pleased because it's really
  1480. close and they only present foreign films, low budget,
  1481. independant movies, etc.  Tonight I saw  "The son's room"
  1482. (2001) a very good italian drama directed by Nanni Moretti.
  1483.  
  1484. The place was almost jam packed with *mature* and/or
  1485. *serious* moviegoers too, even better, not a single rowdy
  1486. teeniebopper in sight !  ;-)   
  1487.  
  1488. I enjoyed this movie about an italian psychiatrist who is
  1489. married and has 2 kids, one boy and one girl, both are in
  1490. high school.  The guy reminded me of a young RON SILVER
  1491. actually. (Around 40-45 years old)
  1492.  
  1493. I was thinking of "Life is beautiful" sometimes while
  1494. watching the film, both have a similar structure and both
  1495. are from Italy.  The first third of the film is rather
  1496. amusing and we get to meet the different members of the
  1497. family as well as some of the patients of the psychiatrist.
  1498. The mother works in an ad agency, the daughter plays
  1499. basketball and the son tennis ... etc.
  1500.  
  1501. The problem is that one day the son goes diving with his
  1502. friends and a FREAK accident happens ... The son dies (It
  1503. is possible that he committed suicide though, only made it
  1504. look like an accident ... but that is not 100% certain,
  1505. which is a plus, it keeps you guessing throughout the film
  1506. !) 
  1507.  
  1508. We see the reaction of everyone, how they deal with this
  1509. TRAGEDY and it is very touching in part too.  It's mostly 
  1510. a character development tale as you can imagine.
  1511.  
  1512. The actors were all amazing and I recommend this film
  1513. highly.  Sometimes I was almost thinking it was good enough
  1514. for a 4/5 but then the ending kicks in and it was just a
  1515. lil' too *cute* and *long-ish* too ... still a very good
  1516. movie.
