From: Marc Desbiens <marcdesbiens@yahoo.com> Subject: [MV] Blood simple - 1984 Date: 01 Oct 2001 13:11:59 -0700 (PDT) Hi there ! I saw this great film noir for the first time late last night ... Wow, this was an incredible movie ! 4.5/5 Produced by the Coen brothers as you probably know it was re-released last year with 2-3 minutes of additional footage. I just love the twists and turns in this movie, how the audience sees the big picture the whole time while the characters are left in the dark for the most part, imagining all sorts of things that are not true, but they don't know that of course ! Intelligent people behind this film and it shows. The story is similar to "Red Rock West" (1993 ?) another great film noir directed by John Dahl ... A bar owner hires a private detective to follow his wife who he thinks is cheating on him ... Turns out he is right and the lady indeed has an affair with the barman of the hick club ... This infuriates the bar owner of course and after thinking about it long and hard he decides to offer 10,000$ to the private investigator if he would kill both his wife and the barman for him ... That is only the initial set up but there are so many twists in this one it would be CRIMINAL to reveal more ... All I can say is try to see this cos' it's a CLASSIC ... Great acting by everyone involved, Dan Hedaya, M. Emmett Walsh, Frances McDormand, etc. I just love the script, the acting, the dialogues, the atmosphere ... even the music ... by the end I was humming "But I'm a believer" ... hehe ! 4.5/5, highly recommended. John Carpenter wrote & directed this CULT film about a group of CHEEKY HOOLIGANS in Los Angeles who are attacking a nearly abandoned Police Station after hours ... The set up is that they are in the process of moving to another location so that is why hardly anybody is left there ... The HOOLIGANS want to get back at the cops who killed 6 gang members the day before and they are also after a man who hides in the station after killing one of them in self defense ... (That was highly unlikely but anyway !) The film gets a lil' too long to get started, but when the gang actually starts attacking the place it is rather exciting ... They are well armed hooligans too, using guns with silencers so the distant neighbours can't really know what is going on and call other cops to the rescue ... Cutting off the phone lines, the electricity, they know what they are doing obviously ! From that moment it's a "Let's keep them out of here or else we're doomed !" picture, same as in "Night of the Living dead" (1968) ... people running around outside and shooting at random inside the station, killing some officers, clerks, prisoners who were kept in the cells too ... Good gunfights there ! Low budget film, so-so acting in general ... also some silly dialogues, I don't think someone would be making jokes and/or flirting with a female clerk when the place is under attack and you don't know if you'll live to tell the tale ... John Carpenter made the music himself as well, reminiscent of "Halloween", weird synthetisers ! Mild recommendation, 3/5 ===== Marc :-) " You can't hurt me now Mr. Powers ... Well, I have to say that you are *right* there, Scott ... in his new movie : "Don't say a word", Michael Douglas's wife is played by Famke Jannsen who will be 36 years old in a month or two ... She is 21 years younger so she could be his daughter ! In fact she is older than his current wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones who is 32 ... Douglas is obviously an "international man of mystery" since he has a "trophy" wife like Catherine even if he is 57 years old at the moment ... (Trivia : Both Catherine and Michael were born on Sept. 25th, only Michael was born 25 years before !) They seem happy though so it's ok ... I don't find it unrealistic in this case since in real life Douglas is indeed married to a woman who is a lot younger than him ... In a film like "Entrapment" they were pushing it though ... Catherine Zeta-Jones as Sean Connery's love interest ?? Geeeeesh ! Same With Woody Allen that you mention, who would believe A young lass in her mid 20's would be interested in *him* ... We were totally delighted with the film. It was just charming and hardly dated at all other then the black& white photography. I was constantly reminded of Loretta Young when seeing McDonald. Disappointing for everyone, especially Mr. Jingles who likes animated films. - AI : Artificial intelligence : 78M$, that is not bad but people were expecting twice as much. It's serious when you read declarations in the newspapers, they're not even hiding the fact they wish he would go elsewhere. Now I agree that Pulp fiction is superior, 5/5 ... in fact it is in my Top 5 favorite films of all times but Forrest gump was also very good so even if it really didn't deserve to win, there were otehr cases where it was a lot more apparent in my opinion, that's why it didn't make it in the TOP 10 .. I know GUMP gets a lot of HEAT, kind of like TITANIC for example, for reasons unknown they both get panned by a lot of people ... Good comedy in general. At one point, before renting it, I wasn't sure if it was worth watching because I had seen the trailer and it looked kind of silly, but the film in general is more "serious" at least in part, they only kept the goofy parts for the trailer ! Story of some office workers in a huge building in Calgary I believe (This could be set in any big city with tall buildings all linked together though !) 4 co-workers decide to bet one month of their salaries, 10,000$ ... The person who will win all the money is the person who will stay inside the complex the longest without going outside to get FRESH air basically. They all live in apartments that can be reached using the undergroud system and then they get to their offices the same way, they have stores and everything they need, you know the drill. It was quite funny how they were avoiding getting out of there, playing mind games with each other, plenty of amusing situations too : one of the girls has to follow her boss who is a compulsive shoplifters, she has to prevent him from shoplifting during her lunch hour, another one gets mixed up with a cute girl and her depressed boyfriend, two co-workers have affairs, one is neurotic, etc. Bizarre characters ! This was very entertaining and well acted too although I didn't recognize anyone in the film. The problem is the money is nowhere to be found and 3 thugs (Crooked ex CIA folks) are after her as well since her dead husband had schemed with them to steal the money but then was doublecrossing them so they are after her thinking she must know where the money is ... George Kennedy & James Coburn look VERY young, not sure about the name of the 3rd fellow ! ;-) Carey Grant co-stars with Ms. Hepburn ... he is a kind stranger who is helping her, or is he ... Talking about his character more would be a spoiler since there are numerous twists and turns involving him ... He has some funny scenes though, Wow, is that a leading man or what ? He's kind of George Clooney-ish ... I was thinking that a few times during the movie, not because of his looks but because of his attitude, loverboy, etc. Overall a fine film, hard to describe it, I would say it is a comedy but there are some nice hand to hand combat scenes, spy games, the works ... The last third is really good too, nice pursuit in the PARIS subway system. Check out Ms. Hepburn's collection of HATS in that one ... she changes hats 5-6 times during the movie ... and she is indeed LOVELY as well ! I watched ENEMY OF THE STATE again yesterday, I was in the mood for a no brainer action film. Good material, my rating remains at 3/5 although this time I enjoyed it a lil' more probably ... It isn't a "charity" 3/5 like the first time around ... where I was going back and forth ... thumbs up - thumbs down - thumbs up ... ;-) Story of a young lawyer, Will Smith, who is in major trouble when someone he knew in college gives him a videotape showing the murder of a big time congressman (Jason Robards). Jon voight had him murdered because he wouldn't vote the way he wanted. The murder was filmed accidentally by a video camera further away ... (Great foot pursuit !!) It's then a cat and mouse game as the NSA agents are after Smith, ruining his family life and doing everything they can to get the tape back, getting rid of witnesses, etc. Gene Hackman plays an Ex-NSA agent who is helping Smith along the way ... Always a pleasure to see him, contrarely to Mr. Smith that I find annoying most of the times ... (Minor repellent !) It's good and intense material up until the last quarter of the film when it turns quite silly and I really dislike the ending as well ... You know the scene with Tom Sizemore ... how convenient !! Yeah, I would have hidden under the table too ... had I written that scene !! ;-) It's a Bruckheimer film so it's big, loud, noisy ... Fast and furious. Worth a look, it's a Friday night film. The one liners should all have been removed, it annoys me to see someone making jokes when he is in mortal danger of getting WHACKED by a machine gun or in a car pursuit. Making it more serious would improve the film actually. This was superior material from Mexico. In spanish with english subtitles. Final score : 4/5 and it is in my top 10 favorites for 2000 right now. The film begins in the middle really ... Around a PIVOTAL car chase/car crash ... Two young mexican men in a car are pursued by thugs in a pick up truck. Pretty exciting material right there actually, shaky images, loud noises ... This is what I call *an opening sequence* ... I was reminded of RESERVOIR DOGS except here it's a big black dog that is bleeding in the back seat instead of Tim Roth ! ;-) The boys' Rottweiler (sp. ?) has been shot and is bleeding profusely in the back seat ... To find out how and why it happened you must watch the rest of the film of course. The movie tells 3 different stories at once. They are all going on at the same time a-la PULP FICTION ... As soon as the car crashes we go into a series of flashbacks leading to that PIVOTAL moment for the 3 different stories when 2 cars collide at a busy intersection. (Wow, this is an amazing car crash, no CGI there, it's all REAL !!) The film is very bloody and people who don't want to see graphic scenes of violence should stay away from this one ... Plenty of dogs being killed and/or mistreated too, involved in dog fights, bloody wounds, corpses etc. (No dogs were hurt for REAL of course but it looks quite realistic on screen I must say !) (Lots of human BEINGS are also bloody at one point or another !!) One story deals with the two boys and their dog ... One of the boys is in love with his brother's pregnant wife and even has an affair with her ... He wants to make a lot of money fast, no matter how, and split with her before his big brother finds out ... He uses the dog to make the extra bread, getting the pet involved in some nasty dog fights and angering thugs along the way of course because that Rottweiler is unbeatable so he defeats any dog they put in the ring with him ... The 2nd story is the least interesting one for me, it deals with a supermodel who happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time ... She has an affair with a married man ... Then something happens and they both get in major trouble ... The last story involves a man who owns about 10 dogs and he is also a HIT MAN on the side, wasting people and getting a lot of money in return ... He used to be a soldier but then became a hired gun after getting into trouble in the army. Good work there, nasty twist !! We follow him as he is asked to whack someone. The whole film is NASTY as I said, except maybe for the 2nd story but even that one is not for the squimmish ... All 3 stories mix at one point or another and I always like that concept. This film deserves to be called a "mexican Pulp fiction" and I enjoyed it a lot ! (I gave 5/5 to Pulp fiction and this is similar in part.)
