  5. I liked this film although I thought it would have been
  6. better considering it has a CULT following.  3/5
  7.  
  8. I had seen it only part of it once 15 years ago so I didn't
  9. remember a lot about it except the "transformation" scene
  10. and the scene where the werewolf is running after a man in
  11. the deserted subway station. For some reason I was thinking
  12. there was a shot of the werewolf actually seen running
  13. after the frightened man but it's the good ol'
  14. "camera-being-the-eyes-of-the-killer" trick instead ... 
  15.  
  16. Simple story of 2 young men who plan to visit northern
  17. England and Italy while they are on vacation ...
  18. Unfortunately they never make it to Italy hence the title
  19. of the film.  ;-)  That's right, while they are roaming 
  20. the English countryside after hours (Griffin Dunne, "After
  21. hours", get it ?)  ;-) .. they are attacked by a WEREWOLF
  22. ... brrrrr !  
  23.  
  24. One of the men is killed in a brutal way and the other
  25. (David Naughton) is wounded and brought to the hospital
  26. where a lovely nurse (Jenny Agutter) makes sure he gets
  27. *better* really soon ... ;-)  
  28.  
  29. Wow, this girl is special, she doesn't even mind the fact
  30. the guy is a complete weirdo talking about seeing DEAD
  31. PEOPLE and having conversations with them too ... She
  32. invites him over to her FLAT for a lil' LOVE AFFAIR right
  33. away mentioning she only had 7 lovers in her life so she is
  34. *not* a promiscuous girl ... yeah, right ! Suspension of
  35. disbelief required there.  ;-)  
  36.  
  37. Of course it is not a spoiler to reveal that this young man
  38. will turn into a werewolf when the next full moon appears
  39. ... That transformation scene is memorable as 
  40. I said, the rest of the times we only see close ups of the
  41. werwolf's head, not very impressive ... They could have
  42. made the film more exciting, showing a lil' more of the
  43. werewolf, not only the head in extreme close-ups ... plus
  44. it is so dark that you can't really *see* a whole lot ... 
  45.  
  46. I like this film mainly because of the set up of course,
  47. classic horror film directed by John Landis ... The acting
  48. is so-so, silly dialogues in part like when Naughton is
  49. yelling "Prince Charles is a FREAK !!" in front of a cop in
  50. London, supposidely to get arrested so he will be locked up
  51. ... Why was this left in the movie ??  It belonged on the
  52. cutting room linoleum ... 
  53.  
  54. I am a lil' forgiving perhaps But I think it is still worth
  55. a 3/5, marginal recommendation !

  115. I think you were a bit harsh on this film.  Then again, I am one of those 
  116. Cult followers of it:-)  (even tho it has been years since I have seen it).

  118. However, I think all your complaints (um... strong word.... but so is 
  119. criticisms.... I am looking for something with a bit less bite, but don't 
  120. know quite the right word....  just keep in mind that I am not denigrating 
  121. you when I say "complaints") about this film can easily be explained away 
  122. with what you said in the Subject of this email:

  127. shown more simply because FXs were not up to par yet.  (Not that better FXs 
  128. would have made a difference.  Look at American Werewolf in Paris..... 
  129. better yet, do yourself a favour, and don't:-) )  Back then, in the midst 
  130. of the Sexual Revolution.... well, the nurse probably wouldn't have taken 
  131. him home like she did, but people liked to think that she might:-)

  133. And I think the same reasoning could be applied to the dialogue, too.

  135. Let me just say that I understand your rating, and your concerns with this 
  136. movie, but that I personally have enjoyed this movie a number of times, and 
  137. think it is one of the few good horror films out there.
  138.  
  139. I would be interested in seeing how this compares to two other movies that 
  140. are high on my list.  First off would be Lost Boys, another semi-cheesy 
  141. horror classic.  And the other would be The Big Chill, made at about the 
  142. same time. Any thoughts on either or both of those??

  218. Delpy that is one of my favorite french actresses ...
  219. Highly disappointing film, a few scary moments but the
  220. story and the characters were ridiculous ...

  355. I liked this one mainly because of the beginning, the set
  356. up and the cast. 3/5

  358. Good serial killer movie, some dark humor is used often ...
  359.  
  360. For example once a cop tells the lead character : "Promise
  361. me you will stop finding dead people ..."  ;-)
  362.  
  363. Unfortunately as it is often the case after a strong start
  364. the film slowly but surely "loses" it along the way until a
  365. rather bizarre ending ...  The last third is really on
  366. auto-pilot and becomes more implausible as time goes by.
  367.  
  368. Set in a small Montana town, Cowboy country.  Story of a
  369. serial killer (Vaughn) who becomes friend with a young man
  370. (Phoenix) who is having a really bad week, his friend finds
  371. out he was having an affair with his wife, jealousy,
  372. betrayal, murder, cover up, bodies being discovered ... 
  373. etc.
  374.  
  375. The killer "toys" with Phoenix a lil' bit ... I was
  376. reminded of "The hitcher" where a serial killer tries to
  377. get a young man in trouble ... there are some similarities
  378. although that other film is more "serious" than this one
  379. ...
  380.  
  381. Still worth watching if you like the cast : Joaquin
  382. Phoenix, Vince Vaughn and that lil' Janeane Garofalo 
  383. of course as the FBI agent.  Plenty of references to other
  384. films in this one too :  Midnight cowboy, Deliverance,
  385. Basic instinct, Fargo ... etc.

  552. I saw this SEQUEL and I thought it was a very good film in
  553. general although certainly not as good as "Silence of the
  554. lambs" of course ... Still worth a solid 3.5/5.
  555.  
  556. Anthony Hopkins is back and still quite scary as Dr.
  557. Lecter, Julianne Moore is replacing Jodie Foster as Agent
  558. Sterling and after seeing the film I can understand why Ms.
  559. Foster didn't want to be part of it ... 
  560.  
  561. She hardly has any really intriguing scenes, mostly
  562. listening to Lecter's voice on tape, running here or there,
  563. talking on the phone, etc.  She was ok for the most part
  564. though except for the rather ridiculous ending ... sitting
  565. down for a lil' dinner ... mmmmmmm ... what's on the menu
  566. ??
  567. Trivia :  Cate Blanchet, Gillian Anderson and Helen Hunt
  568. were considered for the role as well.

  570. Well known story ... Lecter is hiding out in Italy ...
  571. Supposidely he has been hiding out over there for 10 years
  572. without being bothered.  I find that highly unlikely myself
  573. as he is not in disguise or anything, unless you consider a
  574. HAT to be a disguise ... hehe !  Such a high profile serial
  575. killer would be spotted in less than 3 days, I mean, come
  576. on !

  578. Can you imagine Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy,
  579. Adolf Hitler walking the streets anywhere in the world
  580. without any kind of disguise ?? They would have been
  581. spotted right away let me tell you !  Well known and
  582. recognisable people right *there* !  Italy is not some
  583. really out-of-the-way place where nobody has a TV set or
  584. access to newspapers, right ? Just checking !
  585.  
  586. I thought the story was good in general though, Lecter
  587. toying with Moore a lot ... Sending her letters, making
  588. phone calls (NOT DIRTY ONES UNFORTUNATELY ;-) !)  Rich guy
  589. disfigured by Lecter (What ??) says he'll give 3M$ to
  590. anyone who can tell him where Lecter is so an Italian Cop
  591. gets in on the action, etc.   I appreciated the make up job
  592. there, wow, scary Gary Oldman !
  593.  
  594. I have some issues with the last third of the film though
  595. and especially the ending that is gory and silly at the
  596. same time, not a good thing !  Why would Moore act like
  597. that in any case ??  The film seems to be missing some
  598. scenes, that part must have been really detailled in the
  599. book to make us understand the *relationship* they form ...
  600. (I haven't read the book !)   I thought it was highly
  601. implausible and was wondering where the hell it was going
  602. ... 
  603.  
  604. I was thinking the film was like a car with a huge 8
  605. cylinder engine but only operating on 4 in part actually,
  606. It still gets you where you want to go but not in a very
  607. efficient way sometimes.  I know A LOT of scenes were
  608. deleted and CBS will air a 3 hours plus version of the film
  609. in 2003 ... (Why not have released a director's cut with
  610. the additional footage instead ?)  ;-)
  611.  
  612. Overall I thought it was very good although it was a slight
  613. disappointment considering the original is superior in
  614. every way basically. (FYI : Ebert and Berardinelli both say
  615. : 2.5/4)
  616.  
  617. Note : I thought I had heard some people say there was some
  618. R.P.P. (Ridiculous Product Placement) near the end of this
  619. film ... where was it ??  (Good dark humor at the very end
  620. here but I didn't see any R.P.P.)

  817. it makes more sense, so far I heard of a couple of people
  818. who said they preferred that ending over the one that made
  819. it in the film ... also plenty of deleted scenes, 40-45
  820. minutes of material that should really have made it in the
  821. movie for the most part, wouldn't feel so disjointed
  822. probably.

  1643. Wow, very good film but it is so hard to describe it ... 
  1644. I think it is one of the most bizarre films I have seen ...
  1645. 3.5/5    Set in the future, incredible sets,  visuals.

  1647. A guy has weird dreams about being a sort of flying knight,
  1648. he has to rescue a beautiful princess from some evil dudes
  1649. ... Then he wakes up and one day he sees a girl that looks
  1650. just like the princess, only she has shorter hair ...

  1652. De Niro appears as a weird guy who fixes the air
  1653. conditioning system, only he's acting more like the member
  1654. of a SWAT team ... I know this description makes no sense
  1655. ... just like the movie ! lol !

  1695. Alright, I watched this film, I thought it was very good
  1696. material in general.  3.5/5   Based on a true story of
  1697. course, in 1962 Russians setting up some nuclear missiles
  1698. in Cuba, creating "Issues" for the US and everyone else of
  1699. course.

  1701. Great acting, story, dialogues ... Following the
  1702. negotiations as they are trying to avoid WWIII.
  1703. I have to substract a lil' something due to the excessive
  1704. running time, a few repetitive scenes ... but in general 
  1705. it was quite good.  Roger Donaldson directing ...

  1707. I was slightly annoyed by Kevin Costner in the film, not
  1708. because he is a minor repellent as I think in the movie he
  1709. was alright, it was mostly because of his fake accent that
  1710. was coming and going all the time throughout the film.  Now
  1711. I imagine it is hard to talk with an accent unless your
  1712. first name is Meryl and your last name is Streep.  
  1713.  
  1714. Costner was doing his best but it was terrible, one scene
  1715. he would have a big accent and the next one it would be
  1716. gone almost completely, even sometimes at the beginning of
  1717. a scene he would have it and the lose it along the way ...
  1718. slightly embarassing and bizarre ... 
  1719.  
  1720. Why have thrown in this GIMMICK anyway ??  I don't care if
  1721. the real person his character is based on had an accent or
  1722. not, it's only a detail ... he could have spoken with his
  1723. real voice and that would have been fine, anyway it's just
  1724. something that I was thinking of while watching the film
  1725. ...

  1727. Overall it was a really good drama, lots of tension, quite
  1728. talkative of course but that was expected.  This serious
  1729. film should be in my Top 25 for 2000.

  1759. husband just came back from Montreal (WooHoo, not too far
  1760. from here !) and he brought a doll with him along the way,
  1761. a woman he met on the plane gave it to him to keep
  1762. temporarely, she says she will come back later on to get it
  1763. ... 
  1764.  
  1765. I know I know, sounds bizarre !  lol !  Well, I suppose
  1766. they had to find a way for the doll to end up in that
  1767. apartment or else, no movie !
  1768.  
  1769. Well, the husband brings back the doll but soon it
  1770. disappears, no worries I won't reveal any spoilers here.
  1771.  
  1772. Of course this is not an ordinary doll, some kind of
  1773. illicit substance (drugs ?) was hidden inside it and the
  1774. woman only gave it to Hepburn's husband because she spotted
  1775. some baddies who were waiting for her at the airport ...  
  1776.  
  1777. They then try to recover the doll from Hepburn while her
  1778. husband is away thinking it must be hidden somewhere in the
  1779. apartment and that she is only pretending she doesn't know
  1780. where it is.
  1781.  
  1782. It also stars Alan Arkin and Richard Crenna ... pretty good
  1783. acting in general, especially by Ms. Hepburn that is
  1784. impressive as the blind woman, her handicap really
  1785. increases the tension level because all the time we know
  1786. that she is in the dark and that people around her are
  1787. playing games and could hurt her at any time ... The ending
  1788. is excellent, turning the table on the crooks in a very
  1789. clever way too.

  2630. ride, My score is 4.5/5 so it should certainly be in my top
  2631. 5 for 2000, right not it's in #2.  ;-)

  2633. I don't understand ANYTHING that happens but I still loved
  2634. it, lol !! Well, I am exaggerating but this film is highly
  2635. confusing, all sorts of twists and turns, not knowing who
  2636. is lying and who is not, great ending as well, I was often
  2637. close to going up to 5/5, it might be a case of a film that
  2638. is better on a 2nd viewing though because you understand
  2639. more of what is going on ... 
  2640.  
  2641. All those characters and the
  2642. "starting-at-the-end-and-going-back" gimmick was really
  2643. intriguing ... A man trying to solve the rape and murder of
  2644. his wife after being hit over the head, he is not able to
  2645. remember anything that happened more than 2-3 minutes ago
  2646. ...

  2648. The whole time I kept thinking how it was such a quality
  2649. film and that you needed to pay attention all the time or
  2650. else you could miss something important ... Great acting by
  2651. everyone involved : Guy Pierce, Joe Pantoliano, Carrie Anne

  2653. It's nearly perfect IMO.

  2772. Oh, Marc, I knew you would love this movie.  And as for still not being 
  2773. sure what is going on, I think that is what they were going for.  I have 
  2774. looked at some of the discussion boards (including IMDb), and it is obvious 
  2775. there are as many answers to that question as there are people watching the 
  2776. movie.

  2778. As for the second viewing being crucial, I agree, but I have also heard the 
  2779. argument that this movie is similar to The Usual Suspects in that, once you 
  2780. see the ending, the innocence is over, and you can't bring back that feel 
  2781. of discovery as all is revealed.  (Unless, of course, you were able to 
  2782. forget, like Guy Pierce's character:-) ).  Then again, I have watched Usual 
  2783. Suspects three times, and find more and more to ponder each and every 
  2784. time.  I think this movie will hold up on repeated viewings, as well.
  2785.

  2787. I mentioned), but am loathe to even think of putting SPOILERS in 
  2788. here.  There is just too much chance of ruining the beginning of the movie 
  2789. (which is where the real mystery is here, in how it begins, not in how it 
  2790. ends) for someone.

  3836. Ok, I watched this nasty film tonight ... I had seen it before a couple years back.  I think it is an excellent serial killer film actually, not as good as "Silence of the lambs" or "Se7en" but it is quite intriguing for the most part ... 4/5 is my score.

Christophe Lambert is an unpopular detective who tries to solve some gruesome murders that appear to have some religious implications.  A nutcase is killing people to "re-create" the body of Jesus for an upcomming resurrection that is supposed to occur ... All the victims are 33 years old, same as Jesus when he died, they all have Biblical names, etc.
