Oh man, I don't see a new 5/5 film for 2 years and now
I have just seen a 2nd one in just a few days ... "The
Changeling" and now "Insomnia" ...
This is an incredibly good film, I was reminded of
"A simple plan" in part, but I think this one is just
slightly better (Even if I also gave 5/5 to "A simple plan"
... Small budget film, in Swedish with english subtitles
...
Stellan Skarsgard plays a Swedish detective who is asked to
go to Norway to investigate the murder of a 16 or 17 year
old girl ... She was found at a dumping site ... Really
good material there handling the police investigation,
clues, etc.
Soon Stellan finds the girl's back pack and this leads him
to think of setting a TRAP for the killer, broadcasting on
TV that they have found the girl's body and that her
backpack is missing, saying it contained some important
information and that if anyone knows where it is they
should contact the police immediately ...
The trick is he doesn't want the killer to know that he
found the back pack already, he wants the killer to go and
look for it near where he picked up the girl possibly
thinking there is evidence in it he has overlooked ... and
then they only have to wait quietly in the background
waiting for the murderer to go back and get it ...
*** Minor SPOILER ***
This set up actually works but then a horrible accident
happens and Skarsgrad accidentally ends up shooting his
partner ... Nobody saw him do it though so he has to lie
and pretend it was the killer who shot his partner ...
This leads him to lie and lie and lie again to cover his
tracks, all this while trying to continue the ivestigation
... and the worst part (or best !) is the killer knows he
is responsible for his partner's death,
so this is like a chess game, they both have something on
each other so Stellan is kind of a double agent there ..
*Pretending* he is doing his investigation but he's really
trying to pin the murder on someone else to avoid the real
killer's threat to reveal everything he knows and ruining
his career ... Wow ...
***** End of SPOILERS ******
This happens in the first 30-40 minutes so maybe a spoiler
alert wasn't really necessary, but anyway ...
Really clever plot, I loved it all the way through ...
Great acting, dialogues ... t'was just perfect. This
is my kind of movie, dark, twisted, clever ... etc. The
americans bought the rights and will remake it, will be
released in 2002 apparently.
5/5 for the original Swedish version.

George Clooney - "O Brother, Where Art Thou ?" - 2000
Tonight I saw a good foreign film ... "Live Flesh" from
Pedro Almodovar, I think this is better than "All about my
mother" for which he won an Oscar actually, 3/5 is my score
...
Story of a young man who sleeps with a girl one night and
then she dumps him and never wants to see him again ... The
problem is the young man is in love and wants to be with
her, etc. She is a junkie and soon pulls out a gun being
frustrated by his annoying presence ...
Meanwhile we see 2 detectives, one is annoyed because his
wife is having an affair ... a shot is fired in the
apartment of the girl and the 2 cops show up to see what
the hell is going on ... one thing leading to the other and
one of the cops is shot in the back and paralyzed.
The young man goes to prison for 6 years, and then, well,
he wants REVENGE feeling it was the girl's fault if he got
in this huge mess in the first place ...
Pretty good although I liked the first half better, it was
getting rather unbelievable by the end, affairs,
doublescrossings, etc. ... good acting, dialogues ...
Lots of jealous people in Spain, guys treating girls like
dirt, and the opposite as well ... I mean one of the girl
has an affair and then to explain why she is not in the
mood to have sex with her husband when he comes back home
she tells him point blank ... "I'm *sore* because I was
f***ing all night with VICTOR !!" ... Geeeeesh !!
3/5, in Spanish with english subtitles.
Bye !!

Ok, I saw this film, 3/5 ... good movie although I have one
major complaint ... the film's background noise is often so
loud that in certain scenes a good portion of the dialogues
can't be understood. Street noise, phones ringing, people
talking ...
I noticed this in less than 5 minutes near the beginning,
the film gives you a headache almost trying to figure out
what some people are saying.
I was just reading Ebert's review (3.5/4) and he describes
part of a scene with the dialogues, I don't even remember
hearing that in the movie, I guess the audio was easier to
understand at the movie theater?? It was a scene in the
cafeteria where a girl talks about her experience working
in a bank and with all those people talking at once behind
her I didn't understand this juicy anecdote he talks about
in his review.
It's the story of 4 office workers, temps, Parker Posey,
Toni Collette, Lisa Kudrow, I forgot the name of the 4th
girl, Ubauch ?? Something like that ... I had only seen her
once before in "Denise calls up" I think.
Fairly simple film as we follow them on their daily routine
in that huge impersonal office. Some parts are very funny
and I was reminded of "Office space" in part, Toni Collette
being asked to wait sitting on a chair in the corridor on
her first day and that someone will be here soon to tell
her what to do ... 2 hours later she is still there ...
waiting, then a lady arrives and tells her : "Why didn't
you tell me you were here ?" ;-)
It turns more serious in the 2nd half though as someone
in the office has been stealing from other workers,
investigation trying to figure out who the thief is ...
of course the temps are targeted since they are not "part
of the office family" ...
Good acting in general, especially by the lovely Toni
Collette of course, she is such a good actress, wow !
Parker Posey, another one of my favorites is doing an
excellent job here even if there are times when I couldn't
figure out what she was saying due to the background noises
as I said ...
At one point I even thought the filmmakers were doing this
on purpose, maybe indicating that what was being discussed
wasn't really important since they were "just temps" you
know, this was their point actually, that they were the
least important people in the office ... etc. Apparently,
I was wrong there, subtitles would have been required !
3/5
