  48. couple minutes of the movie.. it was still a very good story and well
  49. played out movie. did i hear correctly that haley osment didnt blink
  50. once for the whole movie? and also, was it kubrick or scorzese(sp?) that
  51. first came up with the idea for this movie.. i forgot.

  73. I saw "A.I." last night and enjoyed it.  It wasn't a very good movie 
  74. and the story couldn't make up it's mind (it was all over the place), 
  75. but the concepts and the ideas were fascinating!!  I was awed by the 
  76. imprinting process and the concept of the quest that David is 
  77. pursuing.  The whole Pinocchio theme was unmistakable.  I recognized 
  78. styles from Kubric and Speilburg and didn't think they necessarily 
  79. went together, but it seemed to add to the idea of the movie being a 
  80. fairy tale (in the sense that the movie seemed very 
  81. unreal--especially after the first 1/3 of the story).  I think it's 
  82. worth seeing just to get your mind working and thinking about what 
  83. makes something real.  Is it agreement?  Is it feelings?  Is it 
  84. biological?  Fascinating stuff!  Go see it and think!

  167. Ok, Last night I watched another animated film ... Yay !
  168.  
  169. Last month it was "The iron giant"  (2.5/5) and this month
  170. I gave "Titan AE" a chance ... It was "worse" ... 2/5,
  171. luckily it didnt cost me a dime to see it since I borrowed
  172. the tape from a friend.  It was worth about 50 cents US in
  173. any case.  That is about the price of a sleeping pill, no ?
  174.

  176. The animation was appropriate, good visuals of course but
  177. that is expected from an animated film ... It's the story
  178. and the characters that bored me.  Even if there is plenty
  179. of action I was just feeling sleepy while watching it, the
  180. story was just bo-ring, searching for this lost spaceship
  181. in the middle of nowhere after they blew up Earth 15 years
  182. ago, battling goofy-looking aliens that couldn't defeat
  183. anyone even on their best day, the usual.  Looks like 
  184. "Star Wars" was an influence in fact.
  185.  
  186. Also plenty of silly alien supporting characters, I dislike
  187. most of these animated films cos' they always have those
  188. silly supporting characters to provide comic relief, I'd
  189. like an animated film that would be more "serious" but of
  190. course this will never happen since they are mostly for
  191. kidz.  One of the characters looks like a cross between a
  192. TURTLE and Mr. MAGGOO in fact ... I kept thinking of
  193. MAGGOO, maybe if he had been in that film he would have
  194. improved it ??  hehe !!  ;-)

  196. Matt Damon and Drew Barrymore are doing the voices for the
  197. 2 lead characters (Besides the typical, "DECOY" Good guy of
  198. course, as if I didn't see that twist coming, they even
  199. have the old
  200. "Double-reverse-cos'-he's-not-really-a-bad-guy-after-all"
  201. trick !! Imagine that !!
  202.  
  203. 2/5, it's good if you want to sleep, just turn down the
  204. volume though because the film is quite often way too loud
  205. for its own good, might prevent you from sleeping like a
  206. baby ...

  243. thriller/casino heist I saw in 2000 ... Terrible acting,
  244. dialogues, silly characters, unbelievable material, the
  245. works ...

  332. Ok, I watched this film last night ... good material !
  333. 3.5/5, It should be in my Top 20 for 2000.
  334.  
  335. The film is nasty nearly all the way through though, plenty
  336. of powerful and disturbing scenes. It is set in 1971 and
  337. deals with some recruits who are training hard to go to
  338. Viet Nam ... The last 8 weeks of their training in this
  339. boot camp.  
  340.  
  341. Not a lot of action as it is a character development tale
  342. but if you like war films as I do you will probably like
  343. this one.  I was reminded of the first part of "Full metal
  344. Jacket" and also "Platoon", one scene is almost pulled
  345. right from "Platoon" in fact ... 
  346.  
  347. We get to meet the soldiers, hear what they think of
  348. different subject matters, watch them train, being abused,
  349. called named, fighting, planning on getting hurt on purpose
  350. so they can get out of this hell hole and not go to Viet
  351. Nam, being dragged in the mud, punched, kicked ... etc.
  352.  
  353. Excellent scene where a soldier has to dig a hole in the
  354. ground with a tiny shovel while the DI (Drill Instructor !)
  355. is pushing down on the back of his helmet with his foot at
  356. the same time ... He keeps repeating "Eat dirt, you maggot
  357. !! DIG !! " ... I mean this was *GOLD* !!  Plenty of stuff
  358. in this one that would make a big studio executive cringe
  359. !!

  361. The acting is quite good, I didn't know anyone in the cast
  362. but they were all impressive in what must have been a
  363. difficult film to shoot (Especially since the recruits are
  364. abused most of the times of course, multiple fights that
  365. looked REALLY good, in fact I think they were fighting for
  366. real !! ;-) ...)
  367.  
  368. Colin Farrell plays a young man who is fed up with all this
  369. *&//%$$/%!  and just wants to do his time and go home ...
  370. he's the main character in this, acting disrespectful
  371. towards the authorities which gets him into trouble, etc.

  374. I know he has a "reputation" but this is much better than
  375. that Batman film he made ... did he make 2 of those ??

  419. Oh, yes, this movie was BAD.  (Unfortunately, Oz has friends that worked on 
  420. this film, so he is unable to comment, if you recall the conversation about 
  421. this film)

  423. I saw 3000 Miles to Graceland a few weeks ago.  It was the EXACT same 
  424. story.  3KMtG isn't going to win any awards, either, but it works much 
  425. better.  Some of it is better acting (never thought I would say that about 
  426. Costner:-), and the rest is that they seemed to have more fun making it.

  428. Do yourself a favour, if you need to see this movie, instead watch 
  429. 3KMtG.  It's a much better movie, even if it's no American Beauty or Wonder

  444. the theme, but thought it again could have been a better movie.  Still, it 
  445. was one of my suggestions for a Y2K movie, back when we actually worried 
  446. about those things.  (The other two were The Trigger Effect and Entrapment)

  503. it though, 3/5 ...

  505. I was a lil' disappointed because everyone was raving about
  506. it and it wasn't a bull's eye for me ...  the last third is
  507. really on automatic pilot in my opinion ... oh well, it is
  508. very watchable though, not boring ...

  510. Comedy/Drama about an overweight young man who teaches his
  511. friend about THE TAO OF STEVE, or how to have sex with many
  512. girls even if you are not exactly attractive physically .. 
  513. Acting like a KOOL KAT, Steve McQueen and company ...

  515. Good acting, dialogues.  I was a bit annooyed by the basic
  516. concept though, the lead character is cruel towards women,
  517. using them without caring about anything except to keep his
  518. (tiny) penis very busy.  flirting with this girl and then

  638. *** Mmmmmm ... I loved it, Mel !!  4/5 ... I don'T know why
  639. it is not such a popular film actually ... The acting is
  640. good, Fiennes, Bassett (She would kick any of the Charlie's
  641. angels butts in no time .. you want to see a girl fighting,
  642. rent this one instead of the artsy fancy stuff in Charlie's
  643. angels, computer generated, etc. !)  I like the story, good
  644. mystery-thriller  mixed with a New millenium twist and of
  645. course the technology ... Good action scenes, flashbacks,
  646. SQUIDS, etc.  Tom Sizemore is fun to watch (boy, talk about
  647. a bad hair day !)  Juliette Lewis is a bit annoying in this
  648. one but overall the film is impressive on a technical level
  649. ... I have seen it a few times, and my latest viewing was
  650. just a few days ago so this is why I changed my quote.

  680. This movie is a perfect example of a film that is on a slow
  681. downhill ...  I was thinking 3.5/5 after the first third,
  682. 3/5 after the 2nd third and it ends up at 2.5/5 after that
  683. final third.

  685. Mimi Rogers is pretty good as a lady working for the phone
  686. company, she's on the phone all day giving people
  687. information, looking way bored ... she's also quite busy
  688. after hours, having wild sex with multiple partners quite
  689. often ... Wowo, full frontal nudity !! No wonder this film
  690. was controversial !  ;-)

  692. Then it all turns too "religious" for me when she suddenly
  693. "discovers" God and her character turns preachy 
  694. la-la ... all this because she dreamt of a "Pearl" or
  695. sumthin' ... Oh and a couple of weirdos come and visit her
  696. too, I don't even like when Jehovas witnesses come and
  697. bother me here so why would I watch similar fellows
  698. bothering people in a movie ??

  700. Turns into a religious cult type of film, I am annoyed when
  701. I go to church with all the preaching and the "God" here
  702. and "Jesus" there so I had problems with 2/3's of this 
  703. film basically ... only Robert Duvall's presence made me
  704. like "The apostle" ... Who can forget "THe apostle E.F." !

  706. Bizarre ending as well, What is Will Patton doing in there
  707. near the end as a copper ??  It's weird !!  Kudos to them
  708. for the nasty twist though, you don't see that in many
  709. Hollywood films.  I'll describe what happens now ...

  979. but, oh man, what a TERRIBLE translation!!!  They skipped over whole lines, 
  980. cut conversations into something not even recognisable, etc...... however,

  1010. This is really a very good low budget horror film.  I saw
  1011. it last night, my 2nd time, and it still creeps me out
  1012. quite a bit even if I know what will happen ... Sign of a
  1013. good film !!  I was actually startled watching it again.

  1015. The concept itself is not so original, serial killer hiding
  1016. in a sorrority house and killing the young women there one
  1017. by one, police investigation to find out what happened to
  1018. the missing girls, obscene phone calls ... but the film is
  1019. well made and quite disturbing in part too ... 
  1020.  
  1021. Some of the sounds heard are plain weird, obscene phone
  1022. calls, quite graphic as the caller keeps making threats 
  1023. and bizarre sounds to scare the girls, using different
  1024. voices, really intense !)  "My name is Billlllllly ..."
  1025. Ewwwk !
  1026.  
  1027. The ending is amazing, one of the best endings in a horror
  1028. film I can remember ... the last 10 minutes I was feeling
  1029. scared the whole time ... Who can forget that eye ?? ...
  1030. and then the voice ... the frenzy as the killer is in hot
  1031. pursuit ??  chilling !!  This is more scary than most
  1032. so-called horror films made today !
  1033.  
  1034. A pretty neat twist right there at the end too and what is
  1035. really great is the last 2 minutes or so ... You think
  1036. everything is fine, waiting for the ending credits to start
  1037. rolling and then they throw one last really nasty curve
  1038. ball at you ... a last scene that creeps you out even more,
  1039. well done !!

  1041. I rate it at 3.5/5 this time around, too bad the middle
  1042. part is a bit slow or else it would be an even more direct
  1043. hit.   Margot Kidder was the only one I recognized in the
  1044. cast, although I ain't sure if it wasn't the same cop as in
  1045. "The nightmare on Elm St." ... 
  1046.  
  1047. It also influenced many other films : "When a stranger
  1048. calls" "Halloween" and company ... and it was released
  1049. again last year on video for the 25th anniversary, cult

  1092. Disclaimmer -- spoilers, and since this review was written for my own
  1093. demographic (people who play videogames and watch movies) references to
  1094. the final fantasy video games will certainly leave some of you
  1095. confused.  just skip them.  You should still be able to get my point.
  1096.  
  1097.  
  1098. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
  1099.  
  1100. It was with great apprehension, anticipation that I shelled out my
  1101. thirteen bucks at my local mega theatre complex to see Final Fantasy:
  1102. The Spirits Within with a couple of friends.   After sitting through the
  1103. 108 minutes plus previews and various other annoying ads, I can honestly
  1104. say that the thirteen bucks wasnÆt a waste.
  1105.  
  1106. Final Fantasy: TSW is a tour de force visual experience in the order of
  1107. watching the difference between the special effects in KubrickÆs 2001
  1108. and LucasÆ Star Wars.  The computer generated visuals are a step above
  1109. anything weÆve seen before.  The characters on screen are eerily real,
  1110. yet, they arenÆt and this actively encourages the audience to suspend
  1111. their disbelief, giving the visuals a distinctive surreal flair not
  1112. dissimilar to the way we (gamers) sympathize and associate with the
  1113. characters in the Final Fantasy games despite their synthetic nature.
  1114.  
  1115. The quality of the CG work done in this film is truly mind-boggling.
  1116. Donald SutherlandÆs Dr. Sid is the most realistic synthespian ever
  1117. created for a film, and Ming NaÆs Dr. Aki Ross isnÆt far behind.
  1118. Watching her hair move is a visual treat in itself.  And on an emotional
  1119. level, Dr. Ross was the lone character in the film to detract from the
  1120. generally stoic performances delivered by the CG actors, where on
  1121. several occasions, the pain in Dr. RossÆ psyche is expressed by both
  1122. Ming NaÆs voice and on Dr. AkiÆs face.  The two highlights aside, the
  1123. films several other supporting casts are too generic.  There is the fast
  1124. talking New Yorker weÆve seen from a hundred other movies.  There is the
  1125. tough girl soldier from a hundred other politically correct sci-fi films
  1126. and the obligatory black character, wonderfully acted by Ving Rhames,
  1127. only he didnÆt have much material to work from.  Thankfully, his
  1128. character did not sink to the level of Final Fantasy VIIÆs Garret with
  1129. all the baggage of black stereotypes.  But IÆm still spooked by how
  1130. closely those two characters resemble each other.  There are also a
  1131. couple of other visual imperfections worth mentioning.   My immersion in
  1132. the film was thrown off several times by inexact lip sync and slightly
  1133. off character models.   To me, General Hein, one of the filmÆs
  1134. supporting casts is one of the most poorly designed synthespian in the
  1135. film.   His large head seems out of proportion to the rest of his body
  1136. and his movements are often marked by either jerkiness or plain
  1137. stiffness.
  1138.  
  1139. The filmÆs story is a largely mixed bag.  Audience of some of JapanÆs
  1140. most popular animated dramas, shows like Evangelion or Macross, will
  1141. immediately feel at home with the post apocalyptic storyline in Final
  1142. Fantasy.  Yet, the film still manages to capture me as an audience as we
  1143. watch the story play out.   The heavy use of eastern mysticism in
  1144. explaining the nature of the story will certainly be accepted by Final
  1145. FantasyÆs core audience of young males but could be too mystical for
  1146. audiences outside the demographic, especially, but not including younger
  1147. viewers.  Without spoiling too much of the story, it can be said that
  1148. the story is certainly not the generic space opera some critics claim it
  1149. to be.  It is much deeper than that.  While some critics call the
  1150. emphasis on a life force, and ôthe giaö as a cheesy environmentalist
  1151. sentiment.  I donÆt see it as such.   Given  the context that the filmÆs
  1152. basic framework was devised by famed video game producer Hironobu
  1153. Sakaguchi, the mixture of Japanese beliefs like Shinto is unavoidable.
  1154. We can also draw a strong parallel between Final FantasyÆs visual design
  1155. and story.  It is again a mixed bag.  While none of the designs can be
  1156. classified as bad, the designs canÆt be classified as good either.
  1157. They exist in the large middle of mediocrity.  Some designs look generic
  1158. and borrowed from science fiction films ranging from The Abyss to Star
  1159. Wars.  Yet, the few stand outs, are surprisingly fun to watch.   At the
  1160. beginning of the film, Dr. RossÆ ship begins to transform as it nears
  1161. its landing site, and the transformation sequence is distinctly
  1162. Japanese, with serious attention given to every gear and every
  1163. mechanical surface of the ship.  Watching the wings retract and the
  1164. wheels emerge from reminds me of the robot mechas in Macross
  1165. transforming into Valkarie mode.
  1166.  
  1167.  
  1168. Elliot GoldenthalÆs soundtrack, was a good match for the film with
  1169. several compositions that were reminiscent of the soundtrack found in
  1170. the Final Fantasy game, but again, I felt the game seriesÆ original
  1171. composer, Nobuo Uematsu would be equally capable of creating the movieÆs
  1172. soundtrack and add much more Final Fantasy touches.
  1173.  
  1174. Final Fantasy is a solid movie that is a visual treat but may
  1175. disappointment many in its design and story, and the movie fails to some
  1176. extent to truly differentiate itself from the glut of science fiction
  1177. movies in the market.

  1285. This is certainly a "sleeper" ... very good movie,
  1286. especially if you like Quentin Tarantino and/or David
  1287. Lynch's films. The story is weird, twisted, lots of
  1288. violence and it is often quite graphic, hallucinations,
  1289. blood and guts ... the works.
  1290.  
  1291. Norman Reedus plays a young man who is just 18 years old
  1292. and is living at home with his oh-so controlling mother
  1293. (Deborah Harry !)  She even has the room wired in such a
  1294. way that she can turn the lights on and off whenever she
  1295. wants to.  She raised him by himself because her husband
  1296. left when the boy was just a wee ladd (the break up scene
  1297. is actually amusing !)
  1298.  
  1299. Plenty of weird characters and situations.  The young man
  1300. and his mother obviously have "issues" because the woman
  1301. still insists on giving him a daily bath even if he is
  1302. taller than her. Bizarre Sexual tensions right *there*, you
  1303. know something is "off" though ... the boy never had sex of
  1304. course because his mother keeps telling him how all girls
  1305. are awful and have diseases between their legs ... She also
  1306. checks his clothes for "girl hairs" often ...
  1307.  
  1308. After a while he is sick at working in a fast food
  1309. restaurant and he becomes friend with a guy who works for
  1310. the local mobsters.  He figures it is a good way to make
  1311. lots of money so he becomes a hitman ... meeting a lovely
  1312. young woman who works for the mob boss as a maid along the
  1313. way, sweet love story mixed in ... 
  1314.  
  1315. Quite intriguing, this is a very good dark comedy, 
  1316. I laughed out loud maybe 10 times while watching it despite
  1317. the graphic violence, mainly because it is so weird and
  1318. original !!
  1319.  
  1320. The acting was so-so, except maybe for Reedus in the lead
  1321. but I was having fun anyway because of the story and the
  1322. characters that are quite unusual. Recommended.

  1353. This was a very good film.  Thanks to Mike S. for
  1354. recommending it to me, it was worth it !!

  1356. I wonder why Ebert and company were saying it was so-so ...
  1357. The whole time I was thinking it was quite interesting,
  1358. besides a few long-ish parts in the last third .. overall
  1359. it is a solid 3.5/5.  I was hesitating sometimes between
  1360. 3.5 and 4 so it was quite intriguing in general.
  1361.  
  1362. The acting was excellent .. Billy Crudup in the lead
  1363. impresses me more and more each time I see him on the
  1364. screen ... I should make a list of the films I have seen
  1365. with him in the cast actually ... He seems to be involved
  1366. in a lot of interesting projects, choosing his scripts
  1367. wisely plus he is quite talented as an actor too ... This
  1368. part was difficult and he just "nailed" it ... 
  1369.  
  1370. Jennifer Connelly was also surprisingly good in the film.
  1371. I saw her the other in another winner : "Requiem for a
  1372. dream" and again in this film she is very appropriate.
  1373.  
  1374. Crudup plays the role of a young man who wants to go into
  1375. politics.  Connelly is his girflriend and she is involved
  1376. in all sorts of activities related to human rights,
  1377. controversial issues, so they argue often because they have
  1378. different ideas on a lot of subjects  etc.  The film is set
  1379. in 1983 but we see flashbacks often from the early 1970's
  1380. when they met and fell in love ... 
  1381.  
  1382. The young woman is killed (or is she ?) in the early 70's
  1383. and Crudup had a hard time to get over it .. He is
  1384. hallucinating, imagining he sees her on the street (A lil'
  1385. like in "Bringing out the dead" from Scorsese, remember
  1386. Cage looking out the window of the ambulance ?)  So we
  1387. follow him along the way while he delas with all those
  1388. "issues" ... thinking he is going nutz, losing his mind
  1389. slowly but surely.

  1418. In fact the title is misleading, it should really be called
  1419. "Bored X 4"  ... ;-)

  1421. Mike Figgis directing and he proves here once more that he
  1422. was a one hit-wonder ... Hard to believe the same guy who
  1423. made "Leaving Las Vegas" also made "The loss of sexual
  1424. innocence" and "Time Code" ... Going to the extremes !!

  1426. You probably heard of "Time code" since it uses this
  1427. "gimmick" of having the screen split in 4 parts at all
  1428. times following different characters ... 
  1429.  
  1430. The problem with the film is that none of the 4 small
  1431. screens tells a story that is actually worth watching. 
  1432. They are all boring and uninteresting sotries and
  1433. characters.  So it makes it 4 times more boring than a
  1434. "regular" film that only follows one person at a time, I
  1435. guess ... 
  1436.  
  1437. I could go lower than 2/5 but the "gimmick" saves it from
  1438. an even worst disaster.  None of the stories told would
  1439. make it on their own actually.  They would all get
  1440. extremely low ratings, they are only saved because the
  1441. screen is split in 4 parts all the time so it is intriguing
  1442. to look at the different portions of the screen (even if it
  1443. gives you a headache after a while !)
  1444.  
  1445. Sub par acting by everyone ... Salma Hayek, Jeanne
  1446. Tripplehorn and company, improvised material that's really
  1447. not so good ... At least it was hand held material and was
  1448. shot with digital cameras. This made it slightly more
  1449. interesting.

  1452. knows of other films that use this "split screen" technique
  1453. in a more efficient way ??  "Run Lola Run" comes to mind !

  1492. I don't know if I would consider Run Lola Run as being that closely.  About 
  1493. the only thing that has come close was that film where they shot everything 
  1494. in real time, where the guy's kid was kidnapped, and he had to assassinate 
  1495. the Senator.  I believe that was Nick of Time.

  1497. That movie suffered from the same problem that Time Code does; namely that 
  1498. NO ONE has a 90-minute period of their lives that is worth watching, 
  1499. non-stop:-)  Sure, it sounds like a great gimmick, but the film industry 
  1500. developed the art of editing for a reason, to get rid of all that boring 
  1501. crap that most of us deal with, and leave just the exciting stuff.

  1503. I will say that the premise worked better than I expected.  I thought it 
  1504. would be extremely confusing to have four different POVs (and often four 
  1505. different stories) happening at the same time, but the use of sound editing 
  1506. made one story stand out and made things much less confusing.

  1508. I understand what you are saying, Marc, and can agree with your feelings 
  1509. about how BOR-ING 90 straight minutes of anyone's live would be.  However, 
  1510. I think the gimmick saved the movie from being too bad (I would concur with 
  1511. your rating, perhaps just a slight bit higher).  Heck, as proof, I can't 
  1512. even remember what the movie was about:-)  It was interesting, but I am 
  1513. glad that this is not the acceptable norm for Hollywood movies, and hope we 
  1514. never see another attempt at this, at least not for a long, long time:-)

  1532. I did have one question, so let me give some background.  The idea is that 
  1533. this movie was shot in "real time", with no breaks, no camera changes, 
  1534. nothing but the four actors walking around and interacting, with cameras 
  1535. following.  Pretty much a stage play, with no redos, no cuts, no edits, 
  1536. nothing.
  1537.  
  1538. There were no less than three "earthquakes" in this movie.  I am wondering 
  1539. if these were "planned" (and thus involved people acting like there was a 
  1540. quake), or if the cast and crew really were taken by surprise by the 
  1541. quakes.  It seemed quite unplanned, but you gotta wonder, what are the odds 
  1542. of three minor quakes striking, all in the same 90 minutes that this movie 
  1543. happened to be shooting.

  1703. Alright, I saw this film entirely for the first time just
  1704. now ... This was the last James Bond film I had not seen
  1705. actually.

  1707. I thought it was good, I give it a mild recommendation, 3/5
  1708. ... I feel like being generous because of Sean Connery's
  1709. presence, otherwise it would probably drop to 2.5/5 due to
  1710. the unnecessary long running time and the lack of good
  1711. action scenes and gadgets.

  1713. Trivia : The film was supposed to be called "War heads" but
  1714. they changed the title due to Connery who had said he would
  1715. never make another James Bond film again ... That was
  1716. before they offered him 5M$ to appear in this one !  Plus
  1717. he gets to "pleasure" at least 4 beautiful ladies within'
  1718. the first hour, That Bond is such a charmer !!
  1719.  
  1720. Typical Bond film of course ... a villain named Largo has
  1721. been hired by Blofeld (Max Von Sydow, wowo ! And look at
  1722. that fluffy white cat, meow !) to steal a couple of nuclear
  1723. war heads and then they want a billion dollars (almost !)
  1724. to give them back or else they'll blow up sumthin' ... They
  1725. never really explain what they intend on blowing up, some
  1726. reference to Washington DC ... etc.
  1727.  
  1728. Anyway the plot is not the main reason to see a Bond film
  1729. because they are all so similar ... This one is based on
  1730. "Thunderball" from the 1960's ... I prefer that other one
  1731. that was a lot more exciting and interesting in general.

  1733. As I said Sean Connery saves it ... I appreciated his
  1734. famous "cat like" walk and there are several one liners and
  1735. amusing moments too ... Some silly bits like that phony
  1736. computer game with Largo and Kim Basinger's presence ...
  1737. She's certainly not in this one for her acting skills but
  1738. at least she displays her impressive female charms often
  1739. during the movie.

  1741. Weak musical score as well and The famous Bond theme is
  1742. also missing ... Something is "off" in this movie ... The
  1743. whole time you wait for it to get more intriguing but it
  1744. never really hits the bull's eye.  Good hand-to-hand fight
  1745. with a bad guy near the beginning though !

  1855. Alright I saw this film last night ... I thought 80% of the
  1856. movie was excellent and 20% lousy (The last 30 minutes !) 
  1857. My overall rating is 3.5/5, it would have been a 4/5 had
  1858. that very last part of the film been removed completely. 
  1859. Makes the movie too long and too sentimental for its own
  1860. good.

  1862. The film contains plenty of amazing visuals though, it is
  1863. clearly eye candy !!  Amazing special effects, CGI
  1864. material, cool robots, good use of the music ... Some parts
  1865. are rather grim too, robots being dismantled for pleasure
  1866. purposes, etc.  This is not a movie for kidz for the most
  1867. part.

  1869. Haley Joel Osment was excellent in the lead and 
  1870. I appreciated Jude Law's presence as well as "Gigolo Joe", 
  1871. a robot designed to "pleasure" women ... good idea !  Some
  1872. funny moments there but as soon as it's about to get more
  1873. graphic it goes into another direction ... What's this
  1874. ?BLECH !  The rating is "G" here but in the paper it said
  1875. "Not recommended for children" ... 
  1876.  
  1877. I have issues with the story sometimes, I wish they would
  1878. have forgotten about this fairy business and dealt with the
  1879. more intriguing ideas in the movie, expanding the first
  1880. third of the movie especially that is the best part ...
  1881. Osment's place in that family, how he learns new things,
  1882. how he deals with his new parents and how they deal with
  1883. him ...

  1899. hear the laughter in the theater, people were amused !

  1911. adventures together while on the run ... Jude's running
  1912. from the police and Osment wants to find that blue fairy so

  1916. last 30 minutes and I didn't like that part at all ... Just
  1917. like most of the people in the movie theater .. You could
  1918. actually hear people whispering and complaining, making
  1919. noise, thinking ... "What's this ??" ... The visuals and
  1920. the acting are still great but it's so overly sentimental
  1921. there ... we had had enough already by that point obviously
  1922. ... And it was such a tacked on happy ending ... 
  1923.  
  1924. I think if Kubrick had made this film instead of Spielberg
  1925. it would have been a better one too, although I did like
  1926. the Spielberg film a lot don't get me wrong ... But this
  1927. was grim material in part and Spielberg was always careful
  1928. not to show us too much and then adding this sentimental
  1929. last part that was really unnecessary and implausible ...
  1930. unbelievable, etc.

  1959. Also I didn't buy that the mother would abandon the tiny
  1960. robot boy like that ... was it his fault what happened to
  1961. the son ?? he was just scared cos' of the other mean boys
  1962. there ... Hard to swallow she would be this cruel !!

  2099. to the full story line is completely lost be people who immediately assume 
  2100. the ending is some fantasy tacked-on Speilberg conclusion.  In fact, this 
  2101. end was written into one of the first drafts some 30 years ago. 
  2102.  
  2103. The movie is a fairy tale... but it is one being told by the mechs far, 
  2104. far in the future to their own children, and it is the story of the 
  2105. beginning of their species.  Note that the annoying narrator's voice (Ben 
  2106. Kingsley) is that of the mech that meets the boy at the end.  And the film 
  2107. is quietly populated with references to the boy being "the first," and 
  2108. other obvious-after-the-fact references to the mech surviving the human 
  2109. species.  
  2110.  
  2111. Who built them?  They built themselves, of course.  And a whole new
  2112. society that, like most civilizations, craves to know where they have come
  2113. from, and how it all began.  Even more subtly, their species is about to
  2114. come to and (for reasons unclear -- although it does appear there has been
  2115. some global disaster) and this has lead to the search for "the first,"  
  2116. whom they find still stuck in his tomb, waiting for the Blue Fairy
  2117. thousands of years later.
  2118.  
  2119. As it currently exists on film, this is not the story Speilberg has told, 
  2120. although it does hide in the script.  The story he has told should have 
  2121. ended there under the water.  He simply failed to incorporate the larger 
  2122. aspects in a clear enough manner to have added anything to the film beyond 
  2123. speculation -- and this is why everyone agrees the end feels tacked on.  
  2124.  
  2125. I thought A.I. was an increadibly beautiful and truly haunting film.  
  2126. Thematically, it was one of the most melancholy films I have ever seen, 
  2127. and I left the theatre greatly saddened, but also deep in thought.  The 
  2128. combination of Speilberg making a Kubrick film was fascinating, and I 
  2129. appreciated all the o'day to the passed master that populated the scene 
  2130. structure.  Unfortunately, because this grander vision was shortly 
  2131. realized, or because it was left in at all, it seemed to fall short of the 
  2132. true brillance it could have attained.  But I still highly recommend a 
  2133. second viewing armed with the knowledge of the full story that is hiding 
  2134. in the background.  You'll see it on a completely different level.

  2281. nitpick about details because I expected at least a 4/5 for
  2282. this one considering it was a Spielberg/Kubrick production
  2283. ... all the good actors, the visuals, etc. So I was
  2284. slightly disappointed but overall I still think it is a
  2285. very good film.  I just wish it would have ended 30 minutes
  2286. early !

  2318. You've got to be kidding!  The book was wonderful!  I thought Kubric 
  2319. (and Nicholson, for that matter--who I usually love) ruined it.  I 
  2320. like Kubric.  But I had high hopes for that film because I so enjoyed 
  2321. the book.  I thought casting was all wrong--especially Shelly Duval. 
  2322. I thought it was a beautiful film, however, and the hotel where they 
  2323. filmed the movie was perfect.  But there was so much left out of the 
  2324. book that there was something lost on the screen.

  2345. This film was excellent.  Simple yet very touching story of
  2346. a woman who is raising her 8 year old son on her own after
  2347. her boyfriend skipped town years ago ... She tries to hide
  2348. a lot of the details to her son in order to protect him
  2349. from his father that would not be a good influence.
  2350.  
  2351. She also works in a bank and has to deal with an annoying
  2352. new manager (Matthew Broderick in a role that reminded me
  2353. of his part in "Election") ... 
  2354.  
  2355. Her brother is not as "stable", going from one odd job to
  2356. the next and moving around a lot, not keeping in touch with
  2357. her but he comes back for what is supposed to be a short
  2358. one day visit but circumstances change and he stays there
  2359. for a longer period of time, talking to her son, trying to
  2360. help around the house, getting into trouble, etc.  
  2361.  
  2362. At first she is pleased he is there especially since they
  2363. lost their parents when they were young so they feel very
  2364. close but soon she changes her mind ... 
  2365.  
  2366.  Incredible acting by the two leads : Laura Linney and Mark
  2367. Rufalo are great.  The dialogues were also impressive,
  2368. sounded like "REAL PEOPLE" talking not made up stuff like
  2369. in a lot of movies ... I appreciated it all the way through
  2370. and for once I was not disappointed by a film for which I

  3256. nominations, the best movie of 2000 didn't even get the nod:  Wonder Boys.

It's not that it was bad. I liked it, but the end destroys half what's good in the movie. I mean what's with the electroshocking? It doesn't happen that way. And those images from the sex orgy. Or the operation on the arm? Those are cheap ways toshock. I mean, you can have a stronger effect doing so in a much more subtle and realistic way. I thopught it was excellent, until the 5 last minutes. Such a shame....

  3670. We went to the clubhouse tonight to see the large screen showing of Best In 
  3671. Show. As usual I looked up the ranking and ratings of the film on IMDB. It 
  3672. had a 7.8 of 10 which is a real good rating.

  3674. The movie had some very funny lines and a few very funny characters and 
  3675. some beautiful dogs but the movie itself was a loser.

  3764. Ok, I watched this classic horror film just now ...
  3765. 2.5/5 ... it's a lot like "Carrie" from DePalma, only 
  3766. not as effective or interesting. 
  3767.  
  3768. Typical slasher film where the killer takes out the teens
  3769. one by one, this time the "excuse" to do it is more fuzzy
  3770. though, 10 year olds killing a wee girl and then the killer
  3771. is after them 6 years later at their high school prom for a
  3772. lil' "payback" ... 
  3773.  
  3774. Some moments are scary but the film takes a REALLY long
  3775. time to get started ... It takes almost an hour for the
  3776. killer to slice n' dice his first victim and the film lasts
  3777. 90 minutes ...
  3778.  
  3779. I was getting slightly bored actually as nowadays they
  3780. don't "waste" as much time ... the character development
  3781. was ok but when you watch a horror film you don't really
  3782. expect character development, you expect to have plenty of
  3783. scary scenes !   Some scary phone calls to the intended
  3784. victims are simply not enough !
  3785.  
  3786. Jamie Lee Curtis is the scream Queen of course and she is
  3787. appropriate in this film although she spends more time
  3788. dancing than running away from the killer ... 
  3789.  
  3790. Wall-to-wall disco music on the soundtrack so you've been
  3791. warned.  I saw the collector's edition, widescreen version,
  3792. looked pretty good visually actually and I liked that long
  3793. chase scene near the end where the killer is after the
  3794. "pretty girl" waving his bloody axe ... That was the best
  3795. scene in the movie.

  3797. Leslie Nielsen also appears as the High School principal
  3798. ... hehe !  ;-)

  3833. I'll send this in 2 parts ... one part is dedicated
  3834. exclusively to the R.P.P. in "Cast away" since it is a
  3835. subject matter I find particularly intriguing.

  3837. This film really delivered ... well, I was annoyed in part
  3838. but overall I would say it was a 4/5 ... I was annoyed
  3839. because of the Ridiculous Product Placement though ... 
  3840.  
  3841. This probably doesn't penalize the movie so much as even
  3842. without it I would probably remain at 4/5 and not go up or
  3843. down, but after the first 40 minutes I was getting tired of
  3844. seeing Fedex logos everywhere ... (I even thought at one
  3845. point "Enough shots of those Fedex boxes on the beach !!"  
  3846.  
  3847. This was certainly RIDICULOUS, the first 10-15 minutes
  3848. looked like an infomercial for that company, I could even
  3849. stretch it to the first 40 minutes actually ... we even
  3850. have the "package-cam" bit ... logos everywhere ... 
  3851.  
  3852. I could see it was a good film of course but it was so
  3853. obvious and overwhelming that it bothered me as I had
  3854. predicted. Using a "fake" company name would have solved
  3855. the problem and would have been much better in my opinion
  3856. ...  
  3857.  
  3858. It was like they were living on planet Fed-ex ... I should
  3859. have noted how many times we saw the logo and how many
  3860. times we heard the 2 magic words "Fed" and "Ex" during the
  3861. film actually ... now that would have been a good
  3862. experiment !  ;-)  
  3863.  
  3864. The worst moment is probably when Hanks is in that scene
  3865. where he meets his girl's new husband after coming back ...
  3866. Did you see that, in what looks like a rec room ??  I was
  3867. cringing !!  You have a huge Fedex plane in the background
  3868. on one side, "parked" right in front of the door of course
  3869. and when the director cuts to the other side you have a
  3870. television set with more Fedex commercials behind the new
  3871. hubby ... and then Hanks looks out the side window as his
  3872. ex leaves with her new beau and there's a Fed Ex jumbo jet
  3873. slowly taxiing the airport ... another cut and now it's a
  3874. truck going the other way ... man oh man ... 
  3875.  
  3876. What was the director thinking ??  Couldn't he have put his
  3877. foot down at one point ??  I would have been ok with a lil'
  3878. product placement but this was way too much and should not
  3879. have been accepted by the director, producers, etc.  It was
  3880. clear the film would be a huge hit with Hanks in the lead
  3881. and such a good story so why did they need Fed ex's money
  3882. on top of that ??  
  3883.  
  3884. I recall hearing they got 5M$, not sure though ... How much
  3885. did they pay for this "commercial" ??  I know the plane
  3886. goes down at one point but people are not fools, they know
  3887. that all the companies at one point or another have planes
  3888. going down, so I suppose this is why they accepted that
  3889. their names would be associated to the film. I think this
  3890. is the worst case of Product placement I have EVER seen in
  3891. any movie ... and a few months ago I saw a TV show about
  3892. this, the first title mentioned was "Cast away" of course
  3893. ...
  3894.  
  3895. The reference to the company appear all the time throughout
  3896. the movie even when he's all alone on the island he is
  3897. surrounded.  At one point he looks around, and the camera
  3898. shows the beach slowly but surely from left to right, and I
  3899. actually predicted the appearance of the logo ... 
  3900.  
  3901. I was thinking ... wait for it ... wait for it ... I know
  3902. it's coming ... YEEEEESSSSS !! There it is, I knew it !!
  3903. There had to be a Fedex box right there conveniently placed
  3904. on the beach, I was laughing !! I was getting worried since
  3905. we had not seen any logos in 2 minutes, wondering what the
  3906. hell was going on !
  3907.  
  3908. This trend should really stop before it gets out of hand
  3909. ... and it probably has already, in this film it was
  3910. "acceptable" because the movie was excellent but pretty
  3911. soon even awful films will have logos everywhere ... so say
  3912. "NO" ! to R.P.P. and boycott the companies like Fed ex here
  3913. who advertise in an inappropriate way bombarding the
  3914. viewers with their logos and company names in the
  3915. dialogues.

  5009. Hey, apparently when they were saying that Mark Whalberg
  5010. would have sex with a female ape in the new "Planet of the
  5011. apes" movie it was all made up ... Burton and Zanuck said
  5012. they never considered doing that and they were having fun
  5013. knowing some people were spreading that completely false
  5014. rumour on the internet !  ;-)

  5016. Whalberg has already agreed to appear in a sequel if one
  5017. was ever made ... His only condition is that Tim Burton is
  5018. the director again.

  5020. Burton said he always thought it was bizarre that in the
  5021. first film all the chimps were pacifist intellectuals,
  5022. orang outans were all big kahunas, judges, etc. and all
  5023. gorillas were nasty guards, warriors ... He didn'T want
  5024. that in his movie ...

  5026. He said if you studied the apes more closely you would be
  5027. more likely to make the chimps the bad guys since they are
  5028. often more violent and can turn "psycho" in a matter of
  5029. seconds ... also they are the only apes that have serial

  5058. Ok, I was annoyed in general watching this Ridiculous
  5059. action film.  2/5 ... I was reminded of "Gone in sixty
  5060. seconds" and "Armageddon" sometimes, which is not a good
  5061. sign since both of those films were sub par.

  5063. Simple story ... a millionaire (Bill Paxton) wants to climb
  5064. on top of K2, the most difficult summit in the world
  5065. apparently.  He hires a lovely wee lass that is an expert
  5066. mountain climber (convenient !) ... she also happens to
  5067. have a brother who is also a climber ... Of course the
  5068. brother stopped climbing after a freak accident years
  5069. earlier ... guess what will happen next ?? *winking* !!  
  5070. ;-)  Very predictable story indeed !

  5072. A bunch of silly characters, which was expected, ludicrous
  5073. plot twists, awful dialogues, so-so acting, the works ... 
  5074. I was thinking of OBI-WAN KENOBI (sp. ?) each time the old
  5075. "zen" climber with greasy hair was on the screen ...
  5076. bizarre !  (Use the force, Chris !)

  5078. Yeah, Chris O'Donnell would have needed it because he was
  5079. so bad in this one, I thought he had hit an all time low
  5080. with his role of "Robin-ette" in the Batman films but here
  5081. he is much worse ... ;-)

  5083. I was bored slightly as well because there aren't a lot of
  5084. climbing scenes in the first half especially ... I think
  5085. there are 3 minutes of climbing scenes near the beginning
  5086. than it's mostly a talking heads movie for an hour which is
  5087. like a kiss of death since the characters aren't worth
  5088. listening to and the actors are really average, even
  5089. Obi-Wan.  More action in the 2nd half but those scenes were
  5090. either highly improbable and/or ridiculous.

  5092. Plenty of silly action scenes that would NEVER be 
  5093. possible of course ... What was the deal with that 
  5094. "Nitro-glyce-tripe" subplot ??  As if people would climb 
  5095. a mountain with bombs on their backs, they would have
  5096. exploded 67 times along the way, no doubt.  I saw a
  5097. documentary about REAL mountain climbers so I wasn't 
  5098. impressed by their antics !

  5100. Also the "leap of faith" scene with O'Donnell, leaping over
  5101. a huge *crevasse* ??  .. Oh my ... Can someone really leap
  5102. so far, 50 feet ??  *winking* ... not to mention sticking
  5103. to the side of the cliff like that ... *winking* again !! 
  5104. ;-)  Not in a million years !  Don't try this at home,
  5105. folks !

  5107. Very loud sounds and music too throughout the film, 
  5108. I constantly had my finger on the volume button !   The
  5109. visuals were impressive though, helicopter shots, beautiful
  5110. mountains, etc.  But then they had to tell a story as well,
  5111. this is when the problems started.

  5127. out loud !! This has to be one of the most ridiculous plot
  5128. twists I have seen in a while ... What are the odds of that
  5129. happening ??  I would estimate, 1 in 14,532,345 !! lol !! 
  5130. I couldn't believe my eyes that they would actually attempt
  5131. to push this down our throats ??  Well, they have the leap
  5132. of faith scene as well ... like a double-whammy !
