I got the first 8 or 9 tracks or so. My internet connection died on me
after that :( But I would have to say after listening to the first 5
tracks (up through Signs Of Love which I think is just awesome) I am very
pleased. No disappointment from me so far.
I feel like there is an added layer of complexity to some of Moby's new
stuff... Stars, Signs of Love, Landing.. all of these seem to have a lot
more going on than I'm used to with Moby. I usually think of Moby as
simple yet brilliant music and it's exciting to hear some more complexity.
I don't mind hearing the signature string pads everywhere as I think they
sound beautiful. I'm real glad there doesn't seem to be any Honey/Kelis
stuff going on here I really disliked that.
I can't wait to hear the rest of the tracks hopefully the album doesn't go
downhill after track 5!

If you have access to a Usenet/News server, all the tracks have been posted
to alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.2000s; two of the tracks (first and last) are
missing the last post but if you can decode without it, they play just fine
and you're not missing anything but the fade out.
Cheers!

That article was really good and offers great insight. I plan to go out
and buy the mag today.
Here's a quote from the article about 18 (if you don't have time to read
the whole thing):
Which creates significant anticipation for 18. It will be, for millions of
listeners, Moby's second album, not his twelfth. That worries executives at
the artist's two labels, V2 and Mute. They don't want familiar production
techniques that would make him seem like he was stagnating - or, worse,
rehashing a formula. "It was a serious issue," Moby admits. "We had
arguments. They didn't want me to have any songs with sampled vocals on
them. They were like, 'If you make a Play 2, people are gonna criticize you.'"
There's no getting around it: 18 sounds, almost track for track, like Play.
It even has the sampled gospel vocals - though in place of the earlier
disc's rusticated "Ooh, Lawdys," 18 features more urbane, sexy-sounding
shout-outs to the Almighty. Moby insists the echoes are essentially
coincidence. "I want to make a good record," he says. "And if it means it
has songs similar to things on Play, fine." It is a good record - and if
Play hadn't existed, it would be a great record.
But if 18 is artistically safe, that may be because there's a lot more
riding on it. Thanks to Play's success, Moby is now a far bigger moneymaker
than any other artist on V2, his US label, or on Mute, which handles his
distribution in the rest of the world. Ditto his managers' firm. That
effectively makes him responsible for the dozens of people who work at all
three companies. "I never aspired to be an industry," he says. "Sometimes
I'll become aware of that, the weight of it - and I'm just one guy."

I think "Stars" is a very catchy song and grew on me a lot... but I missed
the whole 80s music scene so maybe that's why it sounds 'new' to me. I
think the way the song builds up to the climax at the end is pretty
nice. It's nothing earth shattering but much of Moby's stuff isn't. I
think "South Side" has weaker lyrics and enjoy "Stars" much much more..
(since that's the only song on Play I can compare it to).
I think "Landing" is the best track from the new single and judging from
the number of demos he made for 18 there should be a lot of B-Sides this
time around as well.
Still after hearing the first 5 tracks of 18 I am very excited and
pleased! Do you not think "The Great Escape" and "Signs Of Love" are
pretty innovative and new for Moby?
Shaun

This is the tipicial copout of the music ind. Take
Fugzi for ex. never NEVER sold out and yet known i
dont want to get into a whole arguement about it bur
he has a big enough fan base and has found that play
sold well enough to make a carbon copy of it, I just
dont want to have to turn on the tv and hear his music
on a shitty tv show, on on pop radio, i hate to say it
but useing "he wants his music heard by as many
people" is fodder.
Sorry if i offened.
