I guess I'm just rather accustomed to the usual mix of good dance beats and=
 mellow sentimental tunes.  Every Moby song that I've ever disliked has=
 grown on me, and I'm sure this album will be the same way.

I do, however, agree that "Landing" is great.  I can't stop listening to=
 that song.  It's excellent.

Maybe Moby has just run out of "fresh" musical ideas....?

I'll have to listen to the album at least 10 times more in order to pass=
 *final* judgement.

ok, so i dl'd 18 last night and i'm listening through it for the
first time right now...and "sunday (the day before my birthday)"
sounds a lot like "sunday was a fine day" which i think was an
unreleased early version of "feeling so real" off of everything is
wrong. just thought i'd mention that. i like the sound of 18 so
far...it does sound a bunch like play and eiw combined, though. not
saying thats necessarily bad. but when i first heard "honey" i
remeber i hated it cause it didn't sound anything like eiw. it took
me a while to accept it on its own. it might be sort of ironic that
the opposite reaction seems common right now on the list.

first off:

so everyone keep an eye/ear out for that.

and i've given "18" a listen or three, and it's fairly good if you don't
listen to it critically. unfortunately, if you listen to it critically it
mostly sounds like a bunch of b-sides or something (ironic, since the
b-side "landing" kinda outshines the stuff on the album for the mostpart.)
in fact, i think some of the stuff that didn't make the cut for play ("my
love", "carry you", "free") outdo a bunch of the stuff on 18.
i gotta say tho, i'm liking some of the mixture on 18. it sounds almost
brit-poppy in a lot of places, pulls some of his material from like 8
years back (like "sunday (the day before my birthday)", which was from a
track that ended up splitting off into "everytime you touch me" and
eventually this).
but anyway, i just suggest maybe listening to 18 in the background a
couple times before you sit down and focus on it, it'll prolly come
accross better that way.
and it is kinda nice to have a couple hours worth of new material and
remixes. (speeking of which, anyone got the down tempo edit of we
are all made of stars?)

The Great Escape is by and far my favorite track, maybe because it's the only one
that doesnt sound like it could have been on Play.

i sound negative. it's a good record. i was hoping for something a bit more

hey ho mobilites

interesting news reports in industry mags Music Week and Billboard which
claim that the campaign for 18 is planned to work in the same way as Play.
ie they want to introduce the record slowly, let it grow organically etc.
this is called stealth marketing and it can work very well on an unknown or
lesser known artist. it worked on play because animal rights only sold in
the region of 100,000 copies worldwide and no one but the hardened fans were
in the least bit interested in him. when play was first promod i found it
almost impossible to get commissioned to write a feature on him. now he's a
megastar everyone wants an exclusive!!
interesting also is the fact that moby maintains that had no idea of the
amount of licensing of the tracks from play that went on as he was too busy
on the road, he also states that with play he had a policy of doing all
interview requests, whatever the medium, and intends to have the same
approach this time.
i wonder if his record companies have told him that they have increasingly
filtered these requests and that (this literally came to light yesterday)
moby's previous tour manager was instructed by the us management to keep me
as far away from moby as possible while writing the book! also the attempt
at the new stealth campaign has quite literally isolated all of the UK
journalists who have remained in full support of Moby since day one.
In the Billboard article he also drags out that old complaint that only
three UK journalists turned up to interview him on the animal rights press
junkit here. he omits to point out that he (or his management) had employed
one of the worst PR companies around for the campaign. preferring them to
the company who had represented him since 'Go'. as a result none of the moby
fans got the pr on the album... by the time word was out it was too late for
the bigger mags. but everyone did live reviews instead (with Ultraviolence
supporting)
what is emerging is a picture of an artist who increasingly has no idea of
the the mechanics of his own career, which is either a masterstroke of
management, or simple stupidity on moby's part.

now, more than ever, i would like to interview moby.

Well, we already kind of discussed this one. I like it. It's a totally
different Moby sound. I really thought more on the album would be like this.
How wrong could I be...

02-moby-in_this_world-esc.mp3

"Lord you don't believe me" What's this? Play?  Indeed. The beat from
WDMHFSB and those famous Moby chords. Later on in the song it get's a bit
funkier, but the pieces kind of keep on repeating eachother. The song
doesn't go anywhere. Even the break in the middle is a repetition of the
main vocals and the piano tune. This song has great potentials, but a lousy
implementation of them.

I already heard it in crap quality live at the olympics. It sounded like a
realy powerful prayerful song there like (as earlier mentioned) Hymn. A
shame the good quality version doesn't reveal the powerful beat driven track
I had expected. Moby can't make dance records any more. These beats are only
a bit in the background, no tension building drum rolls, nothing. What
happened to Moby?

Nice vocals. But couldn't Moby hire some chellists or something? My Sound
Blaster PCI128's midi sounds better than these strings. If you ask me, this
song is begging for an euphoric powerful dance make-over :)

Nice chords, but they sound like I've heard them before. Why did Moby put
this filter on his voice? It sounds like those crappy 128kbs mp3s that those
early mp3 encoders made if your source sound came from tape or 12". Wait a
minute, I
have this effect in CoolEdit too :) I like the guitar in the middle, the
song kind of picks up then. It finally gets some body. This one gets better
towards the end.

Already a candidate for one of my favorite 18 tracks :) Very Play-isch, but
I like it! Simple straight forward song, but I really like it. Can't put my
finger on it what makes this one stand out. Listen for yourself.

07-moby-another_woman-esc.mp3

Catchy bassline and reversed beat. Why did Moby have to use the "natural
blues" bongo's and the little "ooh" sample in this one? surely he must have
more original stuff to sample from around... Otherwise it's a very nice
tune. A bit darker and less melodic than the rest, I like it. Perfect song
for those walks in the cold night. Also a serious candidate for a favorite
track :)

Eeek, do you guys here that flute? Sounds like a bad b-side for a random
Play single. Unimmaginative filler.

09-moby-extreme_ways-esc.mp3

I love it, I love it I love it :) I know that breakbeat from somewhere, I
also sampled that one for my remix of Time's Up by The Brotherhood :) The
original is from Naughty By Nature - O.P.P.  I like this nice breeze of
Animal Rights in 18. I can immagine myself screaming along to this song when
I get the album and I can play it on my stereo instead of through my pc
speakers :) Damn, it's going to be difficult to choose a favorite track from
18 :)

10-moby-jam_for_the_ladies-esc.mp3

Nice groovy track. Homeboy Moby is back on tha track, yes yes yo, he's the
best of all! Sounds like those late '80's early '90's electronic hiphop
records in the
mood of Salt & Peppa. I Like this song.

11-moby-sunday_(the_day_before_my_birthday)-esc.mp3

These vocals were originally used for a demo of a song for EIW, that later
evolved in Everytime you touch me. Notice how the piano chords in this song
are a bit too simular to WDMHFSB? :) I don't really mind, it's a nice song
anyhow. I like that
electronic organ later in the song.

12-moby-18-esc.mp3

Ahh, sweet memories. The Moby as we know him from Little Idiot. Nice
instrumental piano tune with great old-style Moby strings.

13-moby-sleep_alone-esc.mp3

Why does this song make me think of "Whispering Wind"? Nice dark tune with
cool spacy echo and backwards effects.

14-moby-at_least_we_tried-esc.mp3

Haha, remember that track Timmy T - One More Try?  This song really reminds
me of it. Even the titles show simularity :)  Great vocals by the way.
Lovely intimate little brokenhearted lovesong.

15-moby-harbour-esc.mp3

The song I was most curious about turns out to be one of the lesser tracks
on the album in my opinion. It has nice Moby chords and Sinead's singing is
also ok I guess, but again, this song doesn't seem to go anywhere and
Sinead's singing seems to go slightly out of tune at some moments.

16-moby-look_back_in-esc.mp3

This could be a standard b-side for any single from Play. A cool thing
though, after hearing the previous song with Sinead O'connor the first
string chord you hear are the same as "Nothing Compares" :) Don't worry, the
song is nothing like it, just thought this was kind of funny. Nice
instrumental track.

17-moby-the_rafters-esc.mp3

Yo Fatboy Slim is in the house! Hehe, not really, it's just Moby wanting to
sound like him :) Really uptempo track, a bit in the style of James Bond
Theme. I wouldn't have minded if Moby had chosen a bit more firm pounding
beat for this one.

18-moby-im_not_worried_at_all-esc.mp3

Aren't these the same acappella's as used for WDMHFSB? Very likely. I know
Moby is into recycling products, but this goes a bit too far in my opinion.
This song has the air of those old ballads like by the Righteous Brothers
(or however you spell it, English is not my native language :)

My final judgement about 18 is that (like Mark said) you got to listen to it
a few times in the background and than take a good listen. I will not lie to
you guys and say I think that this is the best Moby album yet. It's along
with Play a Moby album that has its good moments, but can't compete with EIW
or AR in my opinion. And if I had to choose a favourite track now, it would
be "Extreme Ways". And I don't really think my choice will change in the
near future.

this mortal coil is one of moby's favourites... the project was coordinated
by 4ad boss ivo watts russell with wolfgang press keybaords guy - whose name
escapes me - putting the music together. the first album 'it'll end in
tears' is a work of genius, the following two not so good. however if anyone
wants to hear some of the post-punk/ early indie influences on moby's music
the this is a great place to start. melodic, simple, ambient passages etc.
... and 'song to siren' is one of the most sublime records of all time.

i don't think 18 comes close to this mortal coil though :(
