.........
These are valid points that you (we) all have to
consider. Does anyone think Moby thought he would be
this huge? I'm still amazed. Hell...he was one of
four candidates for some stupid award recently, based
on sales i believe. The other candidates were Ricky
Martin, Sting and, uh...frick I forgot, but it was
some guy more along the lines of RM and Sting. Moby
in the same award category as those types is
absolutely hysterical! I'm sure he is flabbergasted
by it, especially since it's based on sales. It's all
a very strange thing, and how could anyone predict
that? If you had told him or anyone that he'd be in
the running with those types, we'd all have a big
guhfaw!!!

I can't place relative values on which is more important to (insert cause
here), money or promotion. I don't even know which he's doing. As of Play
(1999) he had essays. Since I don't know where Moby's at now, I can't offer
an opinion here. His current contradiction with the car ad situation doesn't
bother me just like his paper and plastic manufacturing doesn't.
Do you think it's the action that bothers you, (allowing music in car ads),
or that Moby said before that he would never do it and changed his mind?
>i don't think that's it at all. ever since

Which situation do you think is better:
Moby stayed as pure as possible, did not do car ads, no mtv, and no big
concerts, and got his messages out to a few people.
Moby allowed car ads, mtv, and big concerts, but loosened up on his strict
policies against (insert sellout transgression here). He gets his message
out to a lot of people.

My line is a big wobbly thing that makes a circle. Or something like that.
So many tangents and ramifications....
>he has to compromise
>at some point and thus be viewed as a hypocrite.
>if he started to endorse ford, i with you and say
>that's crossing the line. but if he's allowing
>them to use his music, it is a form of support...

Isn't using tour busses a form of support? I don't think it's support, I
think it's just condoning. Allowing a concession, if you will. Both are
different small evils in reach of a greater good.
If you reply to that with "the road to hell is paved with good intentions",
I would refer you back to the paper and plastic concessions.
I guess what our discussion is coming down to is this: Of all the things
Moby has done as a musician, which ones are acceptable hypocrisies and which
are not? And why?
>he did not need to be
>made an mtv spectacle and a radio hero, though.
What's wrong with that? That bland soup of mtv needs a little salt. He's
surrounded by crap and a crap machine, yes, but I'd like to think that he'll
rub off on them and not vice versa. We can't really tell until his next
album shows, but I have faith in Moby's musical integrity.
>unexpected obligations? oh, what i wouldn't give

Well, he is a little idiot. :) I think he's got a better deal at V2 than he
did at Elektra, but I'm sure he had to give a little to take a little.
>it's some of the best dialogue on the listserv in

Definitely. Feel free to chime in, people.

owner-mobility-digest@lists.xmission.com writes:
I'm in agreement with Tim over the Nader debate. No, we should not criticize
Moby's view point on whom he chooses to support and not to support, because
hey, it's Moby's own God given right to say and think what he wants. But on
the flip side, I agree with Steve because if you do put your points out on
the line, you cannot get offended when people attack it, because people are
going to argue with it no matter what, it's pretty much human nature.
Personally, I try to remember that everyone has their own opinions and you
cannot for the most part change others minds. However, since I feel like
writing today (go me ^^) I'm going to throw in my personal analysis, and I'm
sorry if I'm butting in or offending anyone. Instead of just "debating" on a
topic you don't agree with, truly respect (yes people RESPECT) the other's
right to have their own opinions. You should be able to come across better
and more clearly.
On my second point, I want to express myself on Moby "selling-out". There is
always something your going to miss and there is no prevention in harming
something. I think Moby is doing his best job to live life according to all
his beliefs, but you cannot do it all by yourself. I remember someone said a
metaphor on here before "like stopping waves in the ocean with your hands",
which pretty much applies. Moby's main philosophy has always been "one person
can make a difference", so in lieu of that we all have to remember that Moby
is only one man, and is only human.
Well that's my say, hope I didn't offend anyone... ^^ As always, love you all.

"But the fascinating thing about being a musician right now, and this should
give all the college kids hope, is that this is a time where if you can't
play an instrument, sing, or write anything, you can still be the biggest pop
star in the world. That's quite fantastic isn't it? Everyone should leave
their studies, go get a record deal and just put on some tight dresses and
shake. It could be quite huge."
