This discussion on being in the pit made me wonder:
I went to the Campus Invasion tour...so there were a lot of angst-ridden
fans who moshed throughout Moby and Bush. Moby's coming to Dallas late next
month, and the ticketdealer said the floor would most likely be general
admission; I can't decide whether or not to get closer general seating
(which may result in moshing) or be further back but in a seat.
Does it take from the atmosphere to not be jumping around with the crowd?
Or can you enjoy it more when you're just sorta dancing in place from afar?
I know with Alanis and Garbage, it was better to just be sorta stationery at
my seat, but I could still dance without all the obsolete body surfing...

Subject: RE: (mobility) Rolling Rock Report and Crowd Surfing-kinda OT
Here's the problem..Moby is playing rock festivals...and people are bitching
about people moshing during Moby like at the same festival as Red Hot Chili
Peppers and Filter. I think people jumping up and down is just as bad,
because then YOU have to jump up and down also no matter how tired you are
or you get clobbered. I come home with bruises all the time, I looked like
roadkill after woodstock..but like it's what I expect. Go see moby in a
small club or at a rave where it's strictly for dance. The crowd is not
going to tone down just for Moby and his chilled out fans. And if you are
pregnant, I mean you shouldb't be out in the crowd anyways near the
front..because even without the moshing and surfing there are thousands of
people pressed up against each other. My philosophy is that is is chaotic
enough to begin with by packing thousands of people in one tight spot, so
people get pissed. I have had time where I can not breathe where I fell and
got stepped on, but I didn't blame people for it..I knew it was going to be
that way. People in the crowd that can't be around that, should be in the
back or in seats, that's just the way it is. Because the few thousand
people up front, are not going to feel sorry for whoever just wants to chill
out instead of exerting energy. I'm not trying to be an asshole, but I
don't think stereotyping people who like to get out frustrations as
nincompoops is justified.

Why can't they understand that some people in the crowd can't be around
that?
I was next to a girl in a wheel chair at that show. I always go to the
person
in the wheelchair because they always get knocked over. I help keep the
fuckers away from them. I don't appreciate going home with bruises all over
me, and I'm not the one in the pit. I like to be up front, I used to be,
before I got pregnant, and I had bruises all over my ribs, my breasts, my
face, my shins. That's unfair to the rest of the crowd that don't like it. I
don't care if the artist likes it, most of the crowd gets pushed away
because
they don't. You can just jump up and down, rather than beat everyone else in
the venue up.
I understand it'll never be stopped. That's why I don't go to shows any
more.
Just raves for me.

Hi Chris,
I know for sure that she's not mouthing or playbacking. When I watched the live
coverage of the Pinkpop Festival in Holland last June, I could hear her singing
WITH the words. But when I was among the crowd during the Drum Rhythm Festival
in Amsterdam last May I couldn't hear her, and I had the very same feeling you
have. It appears it depends on the soundmixing. I bet the crowds at Pinkpop
haven't heard her either, only on tele she was audible ... Still don't know if
it's Moby himself who controls this or a sound technician with a complete lack
of feeling for good vocals ...
And yes, in a backstage interview at the same Pinkpop festival he told that
there is someone at the side of the stage mixing the samples 'live'. I do agree
with xaq that a fully armoured band or orchestra (what about a gospel choir)
would do the songs far more right. Especially the songs from 'Play'.

Subject: (mobility) I finally get to see his show...
Greetings all.
I found out this weekend that Moby is planning to play in Boise on 10
Sept. Now I'm really stoked!
Anyway, I was thinking about taping the show *if the venue has no
restrictions.* Does anyone on here have any idea what Moby's stance on
this is? If he doesn't want people bootlegging his concerts, then
that's cool and I won't. However, if he has no problem with it (like
DMB and Phish) then I'll probably proceed.

I don't know about his stance on it, but i've booted two shows so far.
Almost had a third but the mic battery died! ARG.
Does anyone else on the list tape shows???
I've got a few questions about taping use Assisted Listening Devices. If
anyone knows anything about these, please contact me. (please email
personally so this doesn't clog up the list with stuff most people don't
care about)
Thanks!

Because he could be so much better if his live material was more organic.
He can afford a backup choir, I sure know he can afford to get someone who
can mix live vocals a bit better. I like all of his stuff, I am just saying
the stuff off Play could be performed live a lot better. Right now it seems
just a bit too automated with the vocal samples, and then trying to hide it
with a singer that can't even be heard. He realizes there is a problem it,
I mean he sings along with Natural Blues but what about all the other songs,
like Why Does my heart feel so bad just ends up sounding like it's being
played straight from tape, he just needs to get some live vocals. I think
he may care too much about having it sound exactly like the record. He
needs criticism, because I don't think the new audience is identifying live
with him, as say you and me. He is playing bigger venues, and he could
utlize so much with those songs. V2-records would put out for it, I mean he
tried with the string assortment on porcelain live, but I only saw that one
time. Just with his creative talent, I just figured there would be a more
creative way to perform his songs live. I'm not saying he sucks, just with
his new material, it sometimes turns out lackluster in a live scenario.

i agree. why have anyone else on-stage when:
1. you can't hear them
2. you have a sample of what they are supposedly playing going over them
i think this is only an attempt by V2 (and moby) to make moby a "band" so
as to not scare off people who think dance music is just a computer. the
irony is that moby the band IS a computer. i say PICK ONE! being a dj, i
have no problem dancing just as hard to a record as to a band. if moby wants
the perfection of a computer, use it. if he wants the specticle of a band,
LET THEM *PLAY*!!!
...and let them be heard.

as to rob's reply to my message (and i am kind of surprised how few people mentioned anything, considering the arms we were up in once religion came up a few days back...) well, i must say it seems a great deal like a sideshow in here, too. many americans do not take our politics seriously. in fact, more than a third of our population will probably not vote in this upcoming election. one of the features of our politics that i distinctly hate (strong word, yes) is that it really does seem like a two party democracy. learned teachers in government classes i have taken (both conservative and liberal) refer to our governemnt as "two-party" when in reality this is *simply not the case,* tho the reps. and dems. would have you believe this.
because we are not a parliamentary democracy, like the govt's based on the british system, the oddly named "third parties" have very little national presence. they are not taken seriously, though they are, i stress this, a viable alternative. some of the more vocal of the third parties are the reform party (which is no longer under the control of perot, and in fact does not seem to be under the control of anyone) the libertarians who win occasionally on local levels...and of course the green party. for further info on our uniquely bizarre political systm, i urge you all to visit www.ficus2000.com
