I met Moby about 45-30 minutes before the show started (which was 8:00 P.M.).
It was just outside, by the buses. I stooped down to tie my shoe and my
friend Beth goes, "hey, dude, that's Moby." And I'm like, "Yeah, you're a
lying ho." And she says he just went into the bus like a second before I
stood up. I didn't believe her. So two minutes later, he comes out of the bus
and I felt stupid.
I don't know what the hell to do. Moby was just talking to some people. So I
waved. He waved back. It was very nice. People started walking up, asking for
autographs, and I was like the fourth person. I was the guy wearing the black
cargos and the black shirt, in case anybody remembers. I knew I needed
something brilliant and insightful to say to him. I knew I needed him to
remember me. I knew that next time he came to Illinois, he had to remember
that cool guy who was wearing all black. He would invite me to hang out.
So what did I decide to say to Moby? What words did I use to cement myself
into his consciousness?
"How's it going?"
Insert palm-slapping-on-forehead noise here.
A guy passed out Moby stickers and postcards a little while before that, so
Moby autographed my postcard. He seemed really cool. I wish I were friends
with him.
Moby put on a beautiful show. Shirts are $27. Little Idiot keychains are $5.
I slept through most of Bush. My friends wanted to see them (they still
agreed that Moby kicked Bush's collective ass, though). And when I was awake,
I amused myself by planning the deaths of these three bouncy little
Gavin-loving tramps in front of me. The type of people who actually SEEMED to
take it seriously when Gavin asked, "So we're going to have a party later,
right?"
Justin.

Ah, okay. I'm still curious as to what band members make up the current
touring line-up. You don't seem to hear much about them.

Subject: (mobility) VH1 Documentary 'Video Killed the Radio Star'
Hi everyone, I just found this. I havent been able to read all of the Mobility
mail very closely recently, so my apologies if this has already been reported:
Monday April 10, 12:35 pm Eastern Time
Company Press Release
SOURCE: VH1
VH1 Documentary 'Video Killed the Radio Star' Looks at the
History of the Music Video
Four-Hour Documentary Which Premieres May 8th Highlights the Performers,
Producers and Directors Who Helped Shape Music Video into a Unique Art Form
NEW YORK, April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- It all began 25 years ago, when the marriage
of two of modern culture's most expressive art forms -- music recording and
filmmaking -- gave birth to the music video. Now, after an entire generation
has
grown up on music videos, they are still considered to be one of America's
hottest forms of entertainment and a monitor of our society that shows us what
is cool -- for better or worse.
``Video Killed The Radio Star'' is a fast-paced, four-part documentary that
takes an in-depth look at the evolution of the music video, an art form that
has become so powerful that it has changed the face of music, television,
fashion, movies, advertising and even lifestyles. The first hour-long
installment of ``Video Killed the Radio Star,'' premieres on Monday, May 8 at
10:00 PM ET/PT and concludes on Thursday, May 11.
``Video Killed the Radio Star'' spotlights historic and significant video clips
from Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Queen, TLC, Janet Jackson,
R.E.M., Marilyn Manson and hundreds more. The documentary also features
exclusive interviews with the artists and directors themselves, who discuss
their groundbreaking clips and tell the behind-the-scenes stories of some of
the most influential and memorable videos of all time.
Artists interviewed include Will Smith, Mary J. Blige, Bono, Sugar Ray, Moby,
Robert Palmer, Holly Johnson (Frankie Goes to Hollywood), Adam Ant, David
Byrne, Trevor Horne (The Buggles), Bob Casale, Laurie Anderson, Toni Basil and
RuPaul, plus top video directors and industry heavyweights such as Bob Pittman,
John Landis, Clive Davis, Michael Nesmith, David Mallett, Bob Giraldi, Tim
Pope, Russell Mulcahy and Matthew Rolston.
``Video Killed the Radio Star'' dates the dawn of the modern music video to
1975, when the British TV show ``Top of the Pops'' introduced a film from
Queen, who found that their new song, ``Bohemian Rhapsody,'' would be
impossible to
re-create on stage. But the music video's spirit is a direct descendant of the
original splicing of rock and film in movies like ``Blackboard Jungle'' and
``Jailhouse Rock'' from the '50s, as well as the Beatles' ``A Hard Day's
Night'' and a proliferation of '60s television shows. ``Some of them were
great,'' notes David Byrne, ``And some of them were kind of handmade.''
In 1981, MTV debuted on cable TV, changing the course of the music industry by
beaming pop stars into the home 24 hours a day. At first, small production
budgets spurred music video directors to create innovative and unconventional
techniques.
In the 1980s, recalls Adam Ant, ``There were no rules, it hadn't really got too
big yet.'' Later, when the sales power of the format became known to record
executives, big budgets followed, allowing artists and filmmakers to experiment
further with dazzling effects, animation and more.
``Video Killed The Radio Star'' is a World of Wonder Production for VH1. The
special is executive produced and directed by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato.
Lauren Zalaznick is Executive Producer for VH1. Debbie Searle is Producer.
Award-winning directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato are the creators of
World of Wonder, an independent, multi-media production company responsible for
the recent Sundance smash ``The Eyes of Tammy Faye,'' HBO's critically
acclaimed ``Juror Number 5'' and the Emmy Award winning ``Party Monster.''
World of Wonder is the production team behind VH1's ``The RuPaul Show.''
VH1 produces and programs a wide variety of music-based series, specials, live
events and acquisition-based programming that keep viewers in touch with the
music they love. VH1 is a registered trademark of MTV Networks, a unit of
Viacom Inc. MTV Networks owns and operates the cable television programming
services MTV: Music Television, MTV 2: Music Television, Nickelodeon/Nick at
Nite, TV Land and VH1 as well as The Suite from MTV Networks, a package of ten

By the way, I was in Disney Village last Wednesday, which is near DisneyLand
Paris, and unexpectedly Moby's "Honey" started playing over the outside
speakers. I thought it was cool, even though Moby has called Disney evil. :-)
I also went on a Moby impulse buying excursion at the Virgin MegaStore on
Champs-Elysees. And, I saw that Play at the Listening Station was receiving
extensive use. Paris was Moby filled.

Subject: (mobility) the april 15th show
Hello all,
This is my first chance to tell you about the April 15th show in Champaign
IL. First off, I almost did not get in because I was supposed to be on the
guest list through BMG but I was accidently put under my managers name and
not myself. I told the ticket people about the mistake but they wouldn't
give me the tickets without having him call the ticket office and giving
permission. After some frantic calls in which I never got a hold of my
manager, some guy who appeared to be working for the venue gave my buddy and
I 2 free tickets!! the show had already started and since he saw me wearing
one of my Moby t-shirts (I was being "that guy") he gave the tickets to me.
Good seats, not quite to the floor. I missed the first 3-4 songs I think,
came in during Porcelain. Shortly after Porcelain, Steve(the sound guy?)
came on stage to sing a jazzy version of Stairway to heaven.
The crowd on the floor seemed to be fairly appreciative but the crowd on the
side wear just sitting there not doing much. I guess I new that would
happen going in, there is something about seeing a concert with assigned
seating that I just hate.
After the show I ran into another buddy of mine who had an interesting
story. he was driving down the street a little ways down from the hotel
where Moby was staying and who would be walking down the street by himself
but the Mob-man himself. Josh pulled up into a parking lot and asked him if
he needed a ride in which Moby responded that he needed to get outside and
get some fresh air(it was a beautiful day). Moby did give him a pass for
backstage right after his part of the show.
After the show we wear waiting by the bus, where I met 3 really nice people
who drove down from Chicago and who had never seen him in a real venue like
the House of Blues, a couple of them might be joining the list soon. moby
came out and talkd to the 10 of us or so who wear waiting, real nice,
mentioned that he had been listening to alot of Massive Attack lately.
I have just recieved my latest digest and there wear a couple of refrences
to Moby posting recently. I must have missed this some how, would someone
be ably to forward that post to me personally? I would be most
appreciative.
Thank you for your time and patience,
Ryan
