Go has samples from Twin Peak and more specifically the Laura Palmer theme :)
So it's prob more the other way around, Go samples Laura Palmer's theme.
just my 2 cents

HAHAHAHAHAHA! That's the original that Moby SAMPLED from--its from the
David Lynch series, "Twin Peaks". In which the story centers around the
murder of Laura Palmer, it fucking kicks arse! The original composition was
done by Angelo Badalamenti, who does many film scores and has done most of
Lynch's film scores. So no, It's not a rip off, but if you want to use such
terms then I guess MOBY would be the rip-off-er; I don't consider sampling
to be a rip off though, unless it takes an entire melody without
manipulation.

Um, no. Laura Palmer's Theme is from Twin Peaks (circa early 90's) and
it was written by Angelo Badalamenti (sp?). Moby coped it off. I
didn't know that there were remixes of the original Laura's theme!
Weird. Check out the label and see how wrote the oringinal. It
*should* say A.B. and maybe something about Twin Peaks.
I hope that clears things up for you. Twin Peaks was a great show and
Laura's theme is totally haunting.

isnt that what i said? anyways,
What moby did could kind of be considered a rip off, but that chord
progression is so common that its been used in other songs, films, and
anything musical almost.. also Angelo's original theme progresses more.
its not just the minor chord with 3 different notes.. i dont know the
technical term, but basically if u play a minor chord (im using cminor), but
raise the 3rd a half step, u get the first chord. the second chord is the
root position of the minor chord, and the third chord has the 3rd raised 3
steps. at least thats the way i can play it.
but the original theme really progresses into a beautiful string/piano
piece.
in fact its even haunting when you watch the series (twin peaks). i wish i
could watch the reruns again, it truly was an odd and interesting series.
but i've heard that sort of chord progression in other films and other
electronic bands, basically just different rhythms.
and with all the GO remixes, Moby truly justified that he didn't rip it off.
He was just creative with it. In fact I think Angelo actually liked it.
oh here actually i was just playing it and if u have a keyboard heres an
easy way of playing it.
three notes make up the basic chord.
1st chord - A, C, F
2nd chord - A, C, E
3rd chord - A, C, G
and then back to the 2nd chord. - A, C, E
and rinse and repeat! :)
and to add to the drama, when u get to that last A, C, E minor chord, if u
can get a low A piano note in there, it basically mimics what Angelo did :)
if you havent heard the theme, i definately recommend listening to it, if i
can find my copy maybe i'll upload it to that moby ftp site, everyones been
going to lately.

Subject: (mobility) Re: mobility-digest V3 #100
Hello All,
I wanted to introduce myself, and since I am
subscribed to the digest version, I may not respond to
threads regularly, so I'll apologize in advance for
that. My name is Ken, I'm 23 and I've been listening
to Moby for a few years now. I'm not the biggest Moby
Fan per se, but I'm interested enough to try to glean
more information; so here I am.
Mostly, my musical tastes are more on the avant
garde or dark side of "electronica." My favourite
bands (though not in this order necessarily) are
Recoil, Massive Attack, Stereolab, Portishead, Depeche
Mode, Kraftwerk, Eno and Gary Numan. I also like
Einsturzende Neubauten, Nitzer Ebb, Gus Gus, Talvin
Singh, Radiohead, Air, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds,
Diamanda Galas, Lydia Lunch, Skinny Puppy, and Front
242.
My initial introduction to Moby was with a track
that he collaborated on for Alan Wilder's (formerly of
Depeche Mode, now Recoil,)'Bloodlines'; "the
Defector". Since the release of Play, I've noticed
other similarities between the two. Alan Wilder's
work in Recoil often combines the darker aspects of
techno and trip-hop and blends them with bluesy/spoken
word vocalists. His work is often described as
filmic; its very visual, like a soundtrack to a movie.
The similarity to Moby and Recoil's approach to
the appropriation of old blues tracks with electronic
music seems at first to be derivative, but I don't
think they take the tracks into the same directions.
I'd definately suggest that anyone interested in
this kind of music check out www.recoil.co.uk .
Alan's also got a new LP entitled 'Liquid' coming out
in March; you can listen to a few tracks as mp3 clips
on his site.
Anyway, I look forward to participating on this list!
Thanks
Ken

I couldnt agree with you more kimby! Badalamenti did compose all the music
for the Twin Peaks soundtrack, as well as most of the other Lynch directed
films. He has an incredible ear for music.

I'm not just being a sucking up fan boy when I say this, but the Moby
interview on the Daily Show had to be the funniest celeb spot I've seen on
there in recent memory.... I actually laughed out loud when he put on the
"Beat It" jacket -- strange connection seeing as he remixed the tune -- and
talked about getting the onion suit for the grammies.

hey guys,
moby was hilarious on CC w/ his onion suit idea and all but i just wanted to
say something. we all first got into moby for different reasons - i became
interested in him b/c of his stance on animal rights and then when i heard
his music, i was so blown away by his ingenious talent that i became an
instant fan. im not criticizing moby but im just extremely sad that he has
begun to compromise his vegan beliefs, like purchasing the leather jacket
seen on tonight's show and also posing in leather and cashmere for
GQ(sigh...). i know to some this may all seem paltry and even ridiculous but
it's an important issue for me. but regardless, i do still love moby as a
musician and respect him as a person - how can u not?

ps- hopefully this post does not start another "vegan war" - i just needed to
state how i felt at the moment. thanx
