Mo-B's,
Sorry for the shenanigans. It's true, I tell ya', all true. Moby and Bush will
be performing on MTV's Campus Invasion tour this Spring. Details are still way
up in the air, but expect anywhere between 15 - 40 dates. The tour will probably
start in Boston (dunno why, it's not much of a college town). More details to
come soon...
By the way, whatever your opinion on Bush may be, Gavin Rossdale showed quite a
bit of class this week in Austria. I won't hurl any personal political views,
as this isn't the forum, but my respect for him soared. Nice to see that two
very socially conscious acts will be paired up...if you're not clued on the
story, here it is.
Bush's Gavin Protests Austrian Gvt.
Bush leader Gavin Rossdale used the concert stage as a means to protest
Austria's new, right
wing government last Friday. During the encore segment of Bush's appearance in
Graz, Austria
(as part of their world tour in support of The Science of Things), Rossdale
incorporated the
Hammotzi, the traditional Jewish bread blessing, into the band's "Prizefighter,"
a sympathetic
gesture towards those protesting the country's new leader, Freedom Party head
Joerg Haider
(who has made controversial statements admiring Adolph Hitler, minimizing the
Holocaust, and
targeting immigrants) who was sworn in that very day (an act that caused many
riots throughout
the country). Rossdale told Reuters: "I thought that the best way to put it
last night -because I felt
that it was just glib and strange to not even mention it- was just to offer
condolences for people
having to deal with that. "It's taken them a long time to get over Austria's
part within the SS and
all that stuff, and it's not a part of Austria that most people I've come
across at our shows are
proud of. It's not the favorite part of their history. There's a sense of
serious malcontent."
Rossdale is half Russian-Jewish on his father's side.
Pax,
Scott

At the risk, well, the certainty of making myself look completely stupid, I
am really, really fascinated in asking the musical ones amongst you a
question.
To try and mitigate the stupidness, I would just like to say that, apart
from holding a tune and bashing on a few instruments to no avail, I have
ZERO musical ability.
The question is - what does it feel like to compose music?
I'm sorry this is only Moby related in the most broadest sense but it is
something that would really help me with something I'm doing at the moment.
I am reading an interesting book called Music and The Emotions, which is
helping me to some extent in that it is defining what music isn't, ie, not
pictorial, not a science etc It describes it as an abstract art which I
can understand. I used to think of it in terms of visual art, ie, lines,
light and shade etc but I now realise that was probably wrong.
And I know that playing music is quite different, that musicians have an
enlarged area of the brain after years of playing; an area of the brain
related to maths. But this is very different to the art of composing, I
gather.
I don't actually know anyone who composes music to ask, so I would be
sooooooooo interested in any explanation, but understand that it is
probably something that can't be articulated fully.
But I'll understand if you think it's a stupid question too (but be
desparately disappointed).

for me, music is discovery. i have almost no real music education. i
cheated my way through theory classes in high school and, being a drummer
at the time, didn't think it was important anyway. now i write my own
music with a keyboard and sampler and all that good stuff, and i still
don't know any theory. i just plunk away until something catches my ear.
it's usually when i fumble and make a mistake. i hear this thing, this
potential, and really lose myself in trying to find the melody i hear in
my head, or almost hear. this is why i do so many remixes of my songs.
i'm continually trying to find that melody. that perfect combination of
sounds. i'm just starting to understand what it means to NOT play a note
and still feel its impact. this may be an odd thing to say, but it's true.
when you start to follow your own line of thought, without it ever being
played, is something very...interesting. it's like your brain KNOWS what
should come next and you don't even need to play the note. you truly
"hear" it in your head.
ok, i should stop before i get really metaphisical...something i really
dislike.

play is mixmag's #6 album of 1999. here's what they say about it. "a real
sleeper album whose mix of blues, gospel, and--hurray!--one-handed rave
piano vanquished the ghosts of thrashcore past and sweet-talked its way into
everyone's wallets." (sorry if someone already mentioned this--it's from
the january issue.)

Yes -- if someone can supply me with a copy of this issue of RS, I
will compensate. I've even done more looking, and only found non-Moby
versions of this month's issue. Thanks. :)
BTW: Sorry about the FTP thing. Discuss away.

Moby will be touring the US with Bush on MTV's Campus Invasion Tour beginning
near the middle of March. No dates/cities have been finalized yet, but we
will keep you posted. Many cities not reached on this tour will hopefully be
addressed by a summer tour.
*Time magazine - Moby wrote a short piece about 'How Will We Experience Music
in
the Future'. Running 2nd week of February.
*The Daily Show (with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central) - Moby interview airs Feb
15 at 11pm (in NY area) - This segment will run 6 minutes as opposed to the
normal 4 allotted for interviews. We've been told that it's very funny
(subjective).
*CBS TV "Grammy Countdown" show - airs in most markets the Saturday before the
Grammys - interview with Moby
*Rolling Stone 'Q&A' feature with photo (approx mid-Feb)
*Moby also taped a station promo for the Sci-Fi Channel.
Station has previously filmed very creative promos with Everclear, Busta
Rhymes, Kevin Garnett, Richard Branson, Traci Lords, and others. Moby's
should air in the Spring.
*Other upcoming print pieces include a fashion piece in the April issue of
Gear
(their 'men of the year' feature), Guitar Player Acoustic feature, Grammy
magazine feature, Village Voice's annual 'pazz & jop' critics' poll, New York
magazine
piece on DJ culture.
*Hopefully, if all goes well, we will be scheduling a chat on AOL or J&R
Music World's site (or both) within the next few weeks.
As always, moby merchandise is available at www.gotmerch.com
If any mobymailers have had negative experiences with this retailer, please
forward that info to mobymail. The selection of merchandise available is
beyond their control.
