Are you sure? My friend and I were wondering that too, but I we came to the conclusion later that it was a guy who looked *a lot* like him. On later reflection, I realized that there were more than a few skinny white bald guys running around the backstage area. Because I'm reasonably sure that Moby is a rather staunch anti-smoker.

Yes..I was looking back there during that whole dj set minutes..
there was one skinny white bald guy..but like his face was totally dfferent
from Moby's
and I could of sworn it was Moby..because he kept coming up to talk to the
Dj during his set...
But maybe I am wrong..if you seen something different...
personally, I don't care what he does. More power to him.

Hey peeps!
I think the only way to solve this question is to have Moby answer it
himself! Hopefully he will read all the comments that we have made and
answer. Regardless of what his answer will be, we all still love him
right?!!!
P.S. Anyone going to the LI show on the 24th?

Joy! He's not. Direct quote from 1996 booklet to Mixmag Vol. 2 "Moby is an
extremist. Testotal. Drug-free. Vegan. Agressively anti-smoking." Hah. I
can love this man again. In his Play essays he even states he doesn't use
drugs (so that thwarted those evil drug rumors). He even made vegan sound
not so bad, even though I still don't believe in it, I can understand why he
does it. I agree with a lot of his reasons, but as humans, we're omnivores,
and like other omnivores, we eat both plant and animals. So I feel that I
have rediscovered the man behind the music and I am happy once more.

Dude, do not start attacking. I was being sarcastic about the nail biting
thing too.. I could care less. Smoking is sad and incredibly bad for you and
it saddens me that he would. But the thing is that he preaches freedom of
choice and that's very cool, but if he says he's one thing, then goes against
it, that makes him a hypocritic and there is nothing worse. I'm not going to
stop loving his music cuz he smokes, it will just limit his voice in the
future, wouldn't it? I eat meat too and tend to argue with
vegetarians/vegans if they're all high and mighty about it, but I can't go
into pet stores or zoos because all of the animals look so depressed and
makes me want to cry. So depressing, sad faces. Lay off. We're expressing
our opinions and shouldn't get persecuted for saying what we think.. Moby's
a smart guy, I admired his stand, and his passion for life bleeds into his
music.

I never persecuted any one of you or even attacked one of you...
I am saying that I feel like I can not say anything because I eat meat and
go to zoos and wear leather or whatever.
What I think is sad..that he has all this pressure put on him to live up to
this image of perfection.
I mean anyone could be called a hypocrite..people who bitch about the
rainforests still read magazines and write on paper and use toilet paper to
wipe their ass.
It's just when people get so nit picky with everything..to where say Moby
can not even function because he is totally constrained by like vegan must
not hurt the world in any way and consume plants and water for the rest of
his life rules...it's just really uneeded pressure. People can change their
mind with things...I love Moby immensely...but I don't want to see him be
another Kurt Cobain and like have him pinned as the spokesman for the vegan
environmentalist group. He's never really pinned himself into a group or
specific genre...and that is something that should be respected.
Like shit I may be wrong, maybe it wasn't him smoking...but seeing the
reaction from people..the pressure he has on him, it's really scary.
Anyways, he can settle it if he ever glances at this.
Heh I mean...basically to be on this mailing list....the criteria is to be a
fan of moby for whatever reason. Don't make this forum a total vegan
thing..cause personally makes me feel like an outcast, and that we are
looked down upon. I just know that Moby never said bye with a vegan
power/animal liberation yell in your face...he doesn't force anything upon
people, he just informs. I'd like for everyone to do that.

I don't give a flying fuck if he's vegan or not. Jesus. Go out eat a slab
of cow. Whatever makes you tick. I don't care and I wouldn't think less of
him if he did. I'm not vegan, I wouldn't never become one, but I can
understand what he's saying. And I know he believes in choice. The question
wasn't vegan, it was smoking. And I am incredibly anti-smoking and it makes
me sad because it brings images in my head of Moby performing through a hole
in his throat (brainwashing comercials worked amazingly on me on the smoking
point, don't you think?) And you did to attack me, you quoted my posting and
then went spewing off in a rage. Calm down and take in what I was saying. It
would make me sad. Enough said. Contained animals make me sad. Sad puppy
faces in pet stores make me want to cry and I have to run out of the stores.
Some zoos make me sad if the animals look depressed, but that has nothing to
do with Moby so I won't digress cuz I know how "off topic" discussion piss
people off. Just accept people for what they think and move forward. Calm
down. Kurt Cobain was tragic, but there was more to his death than the media
pressure to be angst poster boy. He had issues beyond that and you can't
blame the world because he had other psychological issues like everyone else.
Like you said, the guy's human. There's complexity beyond the obvious.
Again I digress.

oh and btw, a better way of finding out if moby smokes is for someone to
go up to him after the show and offer him a cigarette. I'll be seeing
him tonight(2nd) if only i smoked i could do this but the one close
minded aspect in my mind is towards smoking. I think i'm more tolerable
towards drug users than smoker mentality. Maybe because i equate drug
use with stupidity and not so with smoking so i expect more of smokers.
anyone got a light?

i already deleted the message from that one guy (sorry i forgot who you were) but I agree completely. Moby never tells us that we should all be vegans or we're damned to hell. But from what I have seen he shows an example of what Christians should be, actually not just Christians but people in general. The way he treats people is what makes Moby so special(let's not forget his music though!) and I think that Moby would definetely not sit around and type messages commenting on whatever bad habits you may have. We could all learn more than one lesson from him but we have to remember that there is only one true God and its not Moby.
Later,
Jason
