Here's my list of seven significant releases of the 90's. These are records
that I think helped shape the way music was made, listened to, and bought in
this decade. Not all were commercial favorites, but they represented some
new ideas, fresh trends, and made other people want to be in a band. In
alphabetical order.
Moby | Everything is Wrong
(This record, along with Prodigy | Experience, brought techno into the
mainstream. But it was Moby's fractured eclecticism that makes it stand head
and shoulders above the rest.)
NIN | Pretty Hate Machine
(Joy Division's gothic dark beauty filtered though a love/hate symbiosis
with Self, Society, God and Technology. Blade Runner set to music.)
Nirvana | Nevermind
(This is the voice of every geeky, dumb kid who ever got picked on in high
school just for not being popular. Cobain's melodies were evocative of the
Beatles, fueled by punk's raw energy, and driven by a peculiar and beautiful
self-loathing and rage against the status quo.)
Radiohead | the Bends
(The new Pink Floyd? A rock band that is at once cinematic, mystical,
cryptic, and plays melodies so sweet it makes you ache.)
Red Hot Chili Peppers | BloodSugarSexMagic
(the precursor to all the rap+metal outfits running around these days, from
Rage Against the Machine to Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock.)
Sunny Day Real Estate | Diary/LP2
(SDRE defined the artistic possibilities for hundreds grunge/punk/hardcore
bands who sought to expand upon
those roots to make music that was dynamic, challenging, compelling, and,
above all else, emotional.)
U2 | Achtung Baby
(Along with Nevermind, probably the most influential record of the 90's.
With AB, U2 defined themselves not only as the band of the last decade, but
the next one as well. It began a song cycle that mimics CS Lewis' the
Screwtape Letters in its search to find truth though deception, and
introduced production techniques that were not so widely imitated since
"Sgt. Pepper's".)

Well this is a list for the best albums of the 90's,
and being a true fan and having heard 6 yes folks I
said six songs from the forth coming album being
released on 9-9-99 I would have to say that it will be
on this list and it has a right to be.
When you hear it you will understand. You can go to
www.nin.com and register to hear more if you like.
I believe that like Paul Okenfold, Paul Van Dyke, and
of course MOBY that Trent is a musical genius.
Just give it time it will make it on to your list as
well.

I thought it was CLIFTON Park.
Clifton Park is about 10-15 minutes north of Albany up that main
interstate. It's basically a suburb of Albany. I guess you could take a cab over
to the venue for about 15.00 dollars or so.
Hope you enjoy the show!

Hi, I'm a new subscriber. My name is Meaghan, i'm female, 20 and I live in
toronto canada. My favorites musicians are Skinny Puppy and Moby.
Favorite song of Moby's is "That's When I Reach for My Revolver".
I have some questions which I would like to direct to anyone who is
familiar with the Albany area. I have a ticket for Moby's show on August
2nd, and I'd like to know if the best idea would be to take a bus/ train
to Albany and then find Clinton Park (the location named on the ticket)
from there. According to the map, that seems like the best idea, but
since I'm not at all familiar with New York State, I don't know how far
apart this Clinton Park place is from Albany. Advice anyone? I'd like to
know as well, how long are the performances on this tour, to those who
have already been lucky enough to attend.
Thank you!

Brett,
You make such good descriptions of the albums that I'm going to check a few
of them out. This could be an exciting time for me and some new music.
I love HMV (plug plug) because you can return anything you buy within 40
days (even if it's been opened!). SO, I'll go buy some of the albums you just
mentioned and see what thay DO to me. FYI - I bought some album from "Rae &
Christian" last night and was NOT impressed. It's just rap and R&B. I basically
had no idea what it would be so there ya go!

Although I really like Smashing Pumpkins and NIN, I wouldn't put them into
my all time list, however the list which was put together took a lot of
thinking. And it was a lot harder seeing other people put down groups to
which I will felt bad for not putting down. Oh well, this IS my list after
all sooooo...
10.RadioHead- Ok Computer (1997) Nothing needs to be said here.
9.Hydra- Spooky Weirdness (1997) This album was a fluke for me. After
binging on cd's for a while at a music store, I saw this album and looked
at the title, it wasn't because I had heard a single, I just thought to
myself 'what could the title suggest?' Even the cashier chuckled at the
title, and seemed interested in what I would think about the album. It was
one of the best ideas I have ever done to pick up this album.
8.Unkle- Psyence Fiction (1998) OK OK OK, Entroducing was fantastic, I
agree, but I loved the diversity of this album so much that it is higher up
the ladder.
7.Delerium- Semantic Spaces (1994) Being that I liked Front Line Assembly
I knew I would like this album when I picked it up. I was wrong though, I
loved it!
6.Omni Trio- The Deepest Cut (?) The biggest suprise of the list! I am not
a big fan of Drum and Bass. However in saying that I am a huge fan of this
guy. This D&B album didn't just make me wanna move, but to relax and enjoy
all the senses stirring up inside me. So many anthemic songs, but the best
is still 'Haunted Kind' off "The Haunted Science" album.
5.Catherine Wheel- Adam and Eve (1998) Kudos to all the Catherine Wheel
fans out there. 'Chrome' as mentioned on many lists is a great album, but I
still prefer this one. These guys are great.
4.The Tea Party- Transmission (1997) Not just a band that can do ballads
like the new album would suggest, this last album full of harder industrial
like rock/electronic songs was pure heaven. However, their slower ballads
are great to, and on this album especially.
3.Machines of Loving Grace-Machines of Loving Grace (1991) Ahhh, soft
dancey industrial music, this album was amazing. All their albums do it for
me but this one I remember most. Can't wait for the new one to come out.
2.Mimi Goese-Soak (1998) Yes the same Mimi who blessed us with her vocals
for WICILTD, and ITB off of Everything is Wrong. This album is more of
that, and even some which are a lot harder and electronic. I am actually a
fan of her old stuff in an old New York underground art/rock band called
This album is close to #1 it was quite a struggle to decide, but I am happy
with my choices, and happy to have possession of this album. Anyone who
likes her stuff on EIW, would also enjoy.
1.Legion Of Green Men-Floating in Shallow Water (1999) Although hard to
decide between this and the last album, I went with the latter. Trying to
compare this album would be like saying put Moby's Play and End of
Everything together. To make one great album. It has a bluesy upbeat feel
with it's techno and ambient mold, yet doesn't sway to far from the first
album. I recommend this or "Spatial Specific" to anyone who loves great
music. For what they do, these guys are simply better then the Orb, and I
love the Orb.

Moby himself has spoken in several interviews about the themes at work on
AR. It's about the dichotomy of the human condition: to be a fallen creature
but still made in God's image. The songs strike a balance between man's
base instincts towards sex and violence and self-gratification, and his
aspirations to spirituality, altruism and self-denial. The UK version of the
record splits that between the two cds, AR & LI. But Moby prefers the US
release, saying putting the two adjascent to each other makes the rough
stuff more abbrasive and the ambient stuff more soothing.
