yeah--i thought the performance was quite electrifying--but a little
disconcerting with the lip synching--the bassist looked liked she wasn't even
playing--the keyboardist, maybe a couple of pads--it looked to me like the
only people really doing stuff were the dj , moby , and the drummer(even
though he was playing to a drum sequence) and moby only played certain
rhythms. quite interesting---now i am more interested than ever to see his
live show

From: BRIAN HOVEY <bhoveyredfive@yahoo.com>
Subject: (mobility) Re: moby at woodstock
Electronica pioneer talks exclusively to
Woodstock.com about punk rock and television ads.
Moby's not the kind of guy who rattles easily. He
speaks in even, measured tones, even when discussing
the topics most passionate to him. He is well-versed
in
a variety of issues, unafraid to express his views in
essays he's written that are reproduced on the sleeves
of his records: he's tackled, among other things, drug
use, veganism, Christianity, and animal rights. His
beliefs are mostly pragmatic: "Whatever works best
for
a given situation is the approach that should be
used,"he says. He takes pride in removing the dogma
from typically dogmatic topics.
He accepts certain things that in the past may have
been artistic blasphemy: corporate sponsorship of pop
music concerts for example, or songs being used in
commercials. But .... when he is told the Buzzcocks
pop-punk classic "What Do I Get?" is being used in a
Toyota ad, he actually gets a little agitated. Not
much -
but an agitation that's highly unusual given his
ordinarily mild-mannered demeanor.
"Ooh, that's pretty rough," says the man born as
Richard Melville Hall, when he is told the news.
"Every
now and then may ability to accept the times we live
in
are challenged." He pauses for a moment to process
the information, another particle of data to float
through his ever-churning brain. "Okay, we live in
this corporate climate and everything's sponsored and
there's corporate involvement everywhere. But hearing
the Buzzcocks, who I absolutely love, in a Toyota ad,
might bum me out a little bit. I don't have a problem
using music in commercials, but I do have a great
adolescent attachment to the Buzzcocks."
That news out of his system, the suburban punk rocker
turned New York techno god can now return to his
Spock-like state of calm. After the initial kick in
the
Stomach, Moby looks at the sunny side. After all, he
attended the Sex Pistols reunion tour in 1997 and had
a
great time. "Far be it for me to criticize the
Buzzcocks for using a song in a commercial," he says.
Maybe, he wonders, they have health problems or need
to put their kids through school. Finally, Moby
speculates, with subversive optimism, "Maybe in the
process someone may buy a Buzzcocks record. That would
definitely improve the world."
Of course, it could also be argued that Moby's done
his
part to improve the musical world, or, at the very
least, help make it safer for diversity -- he's had his
hand in house, ambient, hard-ass beats, and, of
course,
guitar-shredding punk rock. "I've never picked one
specific style of music. Even when I was playing in
punk rock bands I was still interested in electronic
music, and even when I was making house music in the
early '90s, I was still playing in punk rock bands and
listening to a lot of classical music."
Raised in Darien, Connecticut (where he was
classmates with convicted rapist Alex Kelly, whom
Moby remembers as "a really nice guy"), he was
surrounded by lots of music growing up -- his mom
played old blues, gospel, classical, and folk records.
Moby, in turn, turned Mom onto punk rock. "She really
liked Public Image and Madness and early Gang of
Four," he says. When he arrived in New York in the
late
'80s, white suburban boys like Moby were a rarity on
the DJ scene. He helped change all that, as word got
out about his innovative remixes. He ultimately
became
a recording star on his own with 1992's "Go."
Despite the prevalence of drugs on the scene, Moby
says he was never tempted or pressured. After a bad
LSD experience in college -- "it lasted like 26
hours,"
he says -- he swore off the hard
stuff. "I'm afraid of
frying my brain," he says. "I'm
afraid of hurting myself."
Still, he is not opposed
philosophically to drug use,
and, in fact, kind of enjoys viewing
others indulge. He's
a bit bummed, though, that when
people learn that he
abstains, they become protective. "My
friends who take
drugs make a point of shielding me
from them. And I'm
always disappointed because I think
it's just fascinating
watching people snorting cocaine or
ketemine or
whatever. I like to watch."
The press jumped on Moby's first
proper long player,
1995s "Everything Falls Apart," and
he was anointed
the man who would guide us into a
brave new electronic
world, mainly because he was an
identifiable human
being in the mostly anonymous techno
galaxy. "I
approached making electronic music in
a more
conventional way," Moby says. "I did
interviews and I
put my picture and name on my
records. It just seemed
natural. If you make a record you're
proud of, why not
associate yourself with it?"
But just as the levee was about to
break with the
Chemical Brothers, Prodigy et al. ,
Moby switched
gears, covering Mission of Burma's
"That's When I
Reach For My Revolver" on the
guitar-centric Animal
Rights in 1997. "I was basically
being a little self
indulgent and making a noisy punk
rock record," he
says.
Moby followed the indulgence of
Animal Rights with
Play, a return to the eclectic
electronic music for which
he originally became known. "I think
'Animal Rights'
alienated a lot of people so I wanted
to make a record
that was warmer, more inviting," he
says. Much of Play
is locked in a deep groove, nodding
at Moby's affection
for the blues; in fact, two standout
tracks, "Honey" and
"Find My Baby," make unusual but very
effective use of
sampling old field recordings that
were released on an
Atlantic Records compilation called
Sounds of the
South.
With his appearance at Woodstock on
the horizon,
Moby's been getting himself in the
mood, "I was just
listening to 'Deja Vu' by Crosby,
Stills, Nash, and
Young," he says. "I was listening to
their version of the
Joni Mitchell song 'Woodstock,' and
it's a pretty
powerful vision. You have the
counterculture of the '60s
crystallized around one event.
"The counterculture today is a lot
more fragmented and
in large part it's been co-opted by
the dominant media
power structure, but Woodstock
doesn't serve that
purpose. It's a remarkable event."

moby first!
i was looking for some old tapes that i couldn't find
so i went to my storage place and hit the jackpot! i
found my...
nasa-see the light tour(promo sampler) PRCS-005
side one
1-moby-unloved symphony 6:07
2-orbital-halcyon&on&on 9:20
side two
1-vapourspace-gravitational arch of 10(original
mix)8:08
2-aphex twin- D-scape 4:16
there is no year on it, but it was 93. i still have
several flyers for the event. the cover is all black
and white. the front has orbital in the oval, the move
moby logo, the nasa tour logo, vapourspace, and aphex
twin from top to buttom. across the very buttom of the
front in smaller type it says see the light tour.
the inside has info for contacting or getting further
info on all the bands. for moby it says to contact the
moby mailing list. it was a cool little giveaway. i
think they went to the first 100 people at each show.
could be more. i'm pretty sure more than that leaked
out at the show i went to. but they where given away
at
THE BEGINNING of the event.
CAN YOU TELL ME HOW TO GET,HOW TO GET TO SESAME'S
TREET
i also found me smart e's sesame's treet tape! WOOHOO!
i once said i thought this sucked! i take it back!! i
was bouncing all over the room like a maniac. GREAT
MEMORIES! it's got 12"version,Krome & Time
remix,Beltram's & Hardcore remix both by joey beltram,
and a B side song called magnificent. i will GLADLY
dub a copy for ANYONE who sends a tape and return
postage on whatever type of packaging they want. i'll
pay for the tape and postage if someone will send me a
taped copy of underwater for trade.
RANDOMNESS! OLDSKOOL(not moby related for the most
part) in the same box i found...
ACEN-trip II the moon(kaleidoscopiklimax). both that
song and obsessed II(pictures of silence)(the only
songs on the cd)are great! way ahead of there time.
ORBITL-the green album. the us tape release with the
moby spead freak remix. which is not his best remix.
imo. i have the cd without that song.
but i also found a tape i had made from a friends
stuff with the make it mine remixes. really like the 2
versions i have on the tape!
SUNSCREEM-O3. yeah it's cheesey! but cheese tastes
yummy!
ELECTROSET-how does it feel?(theme from techno blues)
4 mixes and the b-side resistance. CLASSIC!! blows
orgy's version away. again, imo.
EON-void dwellers. some of this is really good, some

remixed by bill coleman(?) with assistance by SUPER DJ
DIMITRY & JUNGLE DJ TOWA TOWA!! it's freakin
incredible! very trip hop! anyone who hasn't heard it
should check it out. still gives me chills.

greets fellow headz,
I was wonderin' if anyone knew any info whatsoever about the music for that
one Compaq commercial. y'know the one with the pretty little techno tweaks
where they talk about how everything's changing and gettting better, etc.
just a typical computer commercial, really, but the musik makes the hairs on
the back of my neck stand up.
another one like this is the satellite commercial (I think USSB or DirecTV)
they were playin a couple months ago where martin scorcese talked about how
movies teach us something about ourselves. and there was this incredible
orchestral musik in the background.
anyone know anything or seen these commercials?
thanks
