I know that the keyboardist was playing, because during the slow part of the
song, where everything settles down, she played something that was not on the
album. I do think moby was lipsinking, but im sure the people who run that
show wouldn't want a performance by people who dont sing. so im not really
dissapointed.

Best 5 Moby Remixers
- --------------------------------
1. Rollo & Sister Bliss - Revolver (honey is also pretty good)
2. Westbam - Feeling So Real
3. Rae & Christian - Bodyrock
4.Josh Wink - Bring Back My Happiness
5. Laurent Garnier - Hymn
Worst 5 Moby Remixers
- ----------------------------------
1. Jr. Vasquez - Into The Blue (gives me a headache)
2. Grooverider - James Bond Theme
3. Dean Honer - Bodyrock (the "dean honer mix")
4. Sharam Jey - Run On
5. hmm...can't think of another really bad one right now :)

As the show was first starting and they showed a clip of Moby without
any audible music playing, I got the impression by the setup and seeing
him on the mic that "South side" would be the tune. I was happy to see
him perform "Bodyrock". Don't get me wrong, I love "South side" too but
it made sense to promote his current single.
MOBY is a hoot!
I guess he and Conan were talking about the Simpsons (LOL) and he says:
"just for the record...
on the conan show the keyboards were live and
the playback came from hard disk and not dat.
i heard that some people thought otherwise:)
and i wasn't lip-syncing, i was repeating the
words in the song. my voice was mixed low, but
it's there if you listen closely."
I could tell the difference, I'm kind of surprised some of you guys
couldn't. At first it appeared to be lip sync but then you could see
how his voice would contribute to what was being played.
BTW: I finally own the domestic (US) Bodyrock single (now playing)
and I have to praise V2 for putting so many tracks on their domestic
singles... i HATE it when a music label (IMO) rips you off by offering
only 2 or 3 tracks & still makes you pay 7 or 8 bucks!

Maybe I'm the only one who heard Moby rapping along under the samples. Just
barely audible. I thought it was interesting that the DJ had two 1200s when
he only used one. I guess you just have to have two to look right. It was
kinda sad that the drummer appeared to be pounding away but wasn't even
audible except for the cymbal crash at the end.
I salute the Moby fans in Conan's audience! At least one of them has to be
on this list, I should think. I wish Conan had them down on the stage with
the man during the credits. If they hadn't let Tony Randall ramble on and
on about nothing in particular, Moby might've been able to actually say
something.
Sixpence, now Moby appearing on late-night TV.. what next?

I agree, it looked mimed, or out of sync. I couldn't hear Moby
at all, and must wonder whether TV audiences were only served a
prerecorded version of the song, without the benefit of live
enhancements (especially Moby's vocals).
When I saw Moby at the Virgin Megastore in Manhattan's Union
Square last month, he sang (shouted with much vigor) the words
to "Bodyrock" just like he did on Conan O'Brien, except you
could hear him. In fact, his voice drowned out the sample and
really made the show livelier. He sings "we rock the body..."
in a curiously intense life-and-death sort of way. (It's good,
though!)
FYI, here are the people he performed with. (PLAYed with :)
keyboardist Lydia Kavanaugh
DJ SpinBad
drummer Scott Frassetto
bassist Greta B
BTW, I have a correction for the tour dates. Moby is playing
at Kitsap Fairgrounds in Seattle on August 7th. He will play
at Portland Meadows in Portland on August 8th.

Moby on Conan:
I DID tape most of the Conan show and I plan on vidcapping it to avi. Being
that there has been a request for the footage I am thinking about posting it
on the net. I also have the performance of "Revolver" from Viva Variety
back in 1997. I'll just grab some space on geocities or one of those
homepage providers and post small parts over a week or two in zip format.
Let me know through private email (flux@scc.net) if you are interested and I
will send you the net address when it is up. I was not too terribly
thrilled with the performance on Conan but it was still great to see Moby.
The Viva Variety performance was much better.
A Request:
Does anyone have any Moby videos taped? If so could you vidcap them and
place them on the web? The reason for this is that I have already started
on making a informational multimedia piece about Moby. I was not happy with
Disk and want to do my own version. I have received training in multimedia
design and am currently receiving training in high-end 3D animation and want
to use this as a portfolio piece. I am currently planning on calling it
"Mobymedia". It's going to contain as much information (pics, videos,
dicography info, etc.) as I can get my hands on. When it's finished I might
even offer copies to anyone who requests it being that I have a CD recorder.
Collaboration:
I agree with the suggestion with Moby working with Trent Reznor. Anybody
heard the song Reznor did with Josh Wink on Wink's album "Here Hear"? The
song is called "Black Bomb (jerry in the bag)", has a NIN sound to it, and
vocals done by Trent. Need I say more? Anyone know when the new NIN album
is coming out? I heard 9/9/99. Haven't bought the new single yet. (Shame
on me.)
Fatboy Slim:
I saw Fatboy in concert on Tuesday. I know some of you on this list do not
care for him that much but I must say that the concert was awsome. The
ticket was $20 but the concert went for 5 hours. It was without a doubt the
best concert I have seen yet. He didn't play just his own stuff. In fact
he mixed in a version of Bodyrock along with Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers,
and old Prodigy over the two hours he was on stage. I wouldn't exactly call
it a stage, though. It was more like a platform in the middle of the dance
floor and it slowly rotated so you got a good view of him wherever you were.
He has become somewhat of a "media whore" but I gained alot of respect for
him as a DJ. If you have a chance to see him I highly recommend it. (Got
my Moby ticket yesterday for August 23rd here in Minneapolis. Can't wait.
Also might see Luscious Jackson/ Cibo Matto concert on Sunday, Guided by
Voices on Aug. 4, and a rave in Madison on Aug. 28 called "Turned On" with
Rabbit in the Moon. Great time for concerts.)
I gotta stop writing these long posts.

Yeah, I think I liked the Viva Variety performance a little better too. I
used to have that on tape but (shame on me, shame on me) I think it got
recorded over. I'm not too terribly organized about my tape labelling.
So I would love to get a copy of the performances.

Wow! That sounds awesome. Good luck with that.

My suggestions for a collaboration for Moby would be (obviously) Bjork. I
would love to hear the outcome of a Bjork/Moby track. :)

I had the opportunity to catch Fatboy Slim doing a dj gig before he got
all the recognition and press and it was one of the top club nites I've
ever had...of course I went to see Paul Oakenfold and Dave Ralph the next
weekend (and this was before Oakie got the inflated ego) and that one
topped FBS's gig. :)

Oooh!!! You are going to have an amazing visual and aural experience
right there!! I *just* saw Rabbit in the Moon this past weekend at a
party here in Seattle and it was awesome!!! Completely jaw dropping and
utterly entertaining! In fact I just uploaded my pictures I took at that
show to my site today (well technically yesterday) if you want to check
'em out...the link's below.

Hi,
Name: Trousers (ok, i was christened Adam but that's
my nick name/web tag)
Age: i'm a 30 something
Moby tunes: Just bought PLAY after hearing Natural
Blues on the radio which blew me away. And it is just
the best album i've heard for a long time. I knew of
Moby years ago but never bought anything til now - i
guess i will be buying some more tunes soon. But
having read his "thoughts" on the sleeve i just
thought he is one cool guys and i just wanted to see
what other people have to say. I suppose anyone that
thinks along those lines is living in my reality right
now.
So, stuff about me: I've been a vege for about 8 years
and it was good to read his comments - i think i'll
try the vegan diet soon and see if i feel good on it.
I don't want any soul to die for my dinner plate, or
to be treated less than i would hope to be treated but
i want to stay in good health so i'll take it slow and
see how it feels.
Big love to anyone that reads this. Stay concious and
help raise the critical mass til we get there.

Hi all, just as an FYI, the Chicago show is 18+...that's either a good thing

I also saw a while back on Pollstar (before the itinerary changed a bit)
that the DC show is at the 9:30 Club. The date given was Sept. 20, I
believe, and then there was a date at Bohager's in Baltimore on Sept. 18.
But those obviously can change at any time.
Hope this lovely Friday finds you all well.

Subject: (mobility) article in the register (shocking details!!!)
just want to welcome the new member(s): hey, theres
another BUILT TO SPILL fan here! woohoo!!!!! and
Neutral Milk Hotel, they rock!
anyway now to the dirt:
In the New Haven Register this morning, friendly
neighborhood New Haven Register Weekend Section
columnist/rock critic/WPKN DJ/Moby fan Fran Fried has
interviewed Moby (again) to tell about his show Sunday
(oh darn now everybody is gonna see it and go to the
show and get tickets before me so i cant go now!!!)
anyway, theres all this stuff about how hes made some
of the most inspired pop music, and how he's not
changing:
"No. I never try to be difmental (seriously, it
continues over to the next page, on the first page it
says dif- and on the next page it says mental!). I
like to make records I love. The distinctions between
music (styles) seem so arbitrary. There are artists,
like Bowie and Madonna, where some of their changes
seem to be calculated. Myself, I'm too clueless to do
something like that."
Then it lists the records he did since 1995 (except
RARE and Voodoo Child, but what does this rock critic
know? He still seems to think that the dance community
as a whole has totally shut Moby out because of AR,
and that none of his fans like it or something. I'll
have to have a word with him someday...).
Then it says that "Robert Hillburn from the L.A. Times
included PLAY in his midyear best album list. Spin is
calling it one of the best albums of the 90s (it is?).
Chances are it will end up in this paper's best-of
list in December as well." Chances are it will end up
in everybody's #1 list here, right?
Moby:"Since the beginning of March, I've done 5-600
interviews (what only 5? ;). The response has been
very good. For me, it's been particularly encouraging.
Just doing the album by myself, I lose objectivity
very quickly. I have no idea whether it's very good or
not. Sometimes, I think it's great; sometimes I think
it's awful.
"I'm quite comfotable with other's people's reactions
to what I do. When I make a record, it's a cloistered
existence. It's quite a monastic cell I work out of. I
put it out to the world and it has a whole other life.
I love that. It's a form of self-indulgence. It's
something personal."
Description of musical styles on PLAY, talks about
field recording songs:
"If you're looking for a deep reason why Moby chose
the latter path, don't: 'The true answer is I heard
all these old a capella voices and I liked them. I
wasn't concerned with the context from which they
came.'"
Then it goes on about how AR was a dissapointment:
"My last record, Animal Rights, was a self-indulgent,
very noisy punk rock record. From my perspective, it
was a wonderful record, but it was a very difficult
listen and self-indulgent. I wanted to make something
warmer and friendlier. Apart from that, my only agenda
was I wanted to make something I love."
then it says the juicy details:about his childhood
growing up in CT!!!
"Whatever sound he makes, It comes from an outsiders
view that was firmly cemented during his wonder years
in Connecticut.
Moby was born in New York, but after his parent's
divorce when he was 2 (and his father's death in a car
crash shortly after), he moved to various places:
Danbury (where his mother attended Western Connecticut
College), Greenwich, Darien, Stratford (hey! my mom
works there!)(during fourth and fifth grades; he lived
in a haunted house)(and yes, I swear that's what it
says), Darien again, and a brief spell at Storrs and
the University of Connecticut (go Huskies!).
It wasn't until he was 16 when he started going to
Anthrax, the legendary punk rock club originally based
in Stamford, where he met 'other kids who dressed
funny' that he began to find a niche."
"I think it affected me very strongly," he said of the
Nutmeg State. "Growing up in Connecticut is an
inherently weird thing - a suburban area sandwiched
between two big cities. Darien was weird. My mother
and I were very poor, but we lived in this very rich
town.
(Exactly, just look at what stuff they have in the
libraries over there!) (Stratford is) a very blue
collar town and my mother was a hippie. (so THATs why
he's playing at woodstock! he better play "Love Song
For My Mom"!)(and yes, Stratford is pretty boring, the
only thing to do theree is go to the library and say
HI! to my mom, or hop a train to Bridgeprt and go to
WPKN.)
"I was feeling like an outsider, a poor kid..... A lot
of it is feeling ostracized from regular Connecticut
life becaude I never felt comfortable anywhere I was
living. We had clean air and clean water to drink, but
I never felt like part of the infrastructure where I
was living."
On Woodstock:"My feelings are I hope this is a good
event, and that people are treated respectfully. I
have simple aspirations."
woohoo!!!
okay, any1ne going to Woodstock? I'm gonna check to
see what ime he comes on (if it says on the website)
