Thank you for your personal response, Moby! You did make some great comments
that are not only thought-provoking, but credible because of your history and
experience in the music industry...we all have been putting this "thread"
into one specific stereotype without realizing what the artist-at-hand is
really trying to accomplish....could be money, could be fame, could be
supporting his $500/day ice cream habbit...but I'd like to agree with Moby
here when he states that without the "marriage" of music and business, we all
wouldn't be here talking about it and all the wonderful music it has to
offer....Thanks again Moby from all of us at the Mobility mailing list!!!

Subject: (mobility) re: this sell out issue
i have been sitting back listening-but now i have to
speak. does anybody remember(and i tried to find a
magazine but there all packed away)back around the
time of eiw when moby was being interviewed a lot-he
was constantly asked about being famous and signing
with a major label and selling out and blah blah
blah...
and his answer was-i recall-something to the effect
of-he wanted to sell a lot of records. and he wanted
to be famous. and he wanted people to know who he was.
and if being on a major label is what it would take
then so be it.
also-if NO-ONE made any money from music...you would
have very little opportunity to hear music. record
labels major and indie are not necessarally a good
thing...BUT! the do pay for most artists to
record(which in turn puts the artists in debt-but
still)they do pay to have the music distributed-they
do promote the artists(sometimes)and somewhere along
the line someone(be it the label-or management or
promoter)is paying to get these artists out on the
road so we can go see them and the artists can make
MORE MONEY! admitedly-a lot of artists get screwed and
a lot of the label execs(and all the other schmuks
involved)are just out for the money. but keeping it
real does not mean being poor. and even a totally
indie artist(ani difranco for example-or fugazi) to
continue being indie-have to make some money to
support themselves, there family and there music! and
in the end if they make money-they have to deal with
all the financial shit that a record label(major or
indie) would be helping them out with. the only
difference is that these totally independent artists
enjoy a bigger PROFIT margin from there music sales.
so in the end-is'nt it just the music that matters?
good music is good music!

help me out. does anyone here have United DJ's of America Volume 9 mixed by
Mark Farina? i recently bought the album and about 1:36 into track 8, the
sound drops totally out for about 2 seconds. is this a glitch with my album
or was it a messup in the recording of the album and all discs are like
that? please help.

You don't need to give your card info to bid on items, only to sell them.
But yes, you can now bid on items.
> - Does eBay automattically charge me and pay the seller?
No, you have to contact the seller once you win a bid, usually they
request that you send check or mainly money order, then they send to the
item trhough the mail.

sort of, they provide limited protection against fraud and such, but they
are not a big mediator

normally, my feathers don't get ruffled over miscommunication but I do feel
somewhat compelled to question this remark. did you mean japanese OR
american? japanese american? american living in japan? maybe you can
clarify that one bud... :)
in any event...AJ are you japanese? or 'gaikokujin'? my girlfriend & I read
your last post...are you in the Miyagi prefecture? when I was there I went
to a ton of record shops in Tokyo looking for japanese Moby (& other bands')
releases but, no luck. it was pretty much a lot of pop: Pizzicato Five,
Cardigans, etc. where do you buy your records...online?
RE: selling out
it was cool to get the big guy's response to this.(has he responded much in
the past?) about an hour ago, I saw a commercial which had the acid sounds
of Roland's TB-303 squelching away over a dance beat followed by a woman's
voice...'maybe it's maybeline'. c'mon folks, you can't single out any one
particular techno artist and label them a sell out. the whole genre in
general has pulled it's pants down and bent over. same with rock and every
other type. and the few artists who haven't are either starving or very,
very lucky. I think moby's been lucky to be able to dabble in different
styles which people actually view as a strength.
Christian, did you go to dubtribe? is sunset still happening these days?

hey andrew-great to heer from you. about the use of
elctronica in commercials-i've actually heard some
really good music in commercials as of late-kinda
wierd actually. and yes-dubtribe was incredible!!!
beautiful and positive!! there are actually quite a
lot of sunset parties around. especially this time of
year and on into the summer. many of them are
free-usually on sundays near the berkeley marina or
richmond/san rafeal bridge for some reason. dubtribe
is playing there annual bastile day party on july
14th-outdoors with lots of friends-gonna be sweet!
sorry about that people! but i do have a moby
question. i have been emailing a lot of want lists
lately(if your looking for hard to find stuff-try uk
based want lists-i have better luck with them)and i
was wondering if there was ever any barracuda 12"
releases. or any strange rare moby releases at all-ya
know-like white labels and such. i know i could look
on any of several discographies-but i wanted to hear
what you fine fols had to say!!
anne!! i'm still missing you terribly!! i hope you are
well.
