it seems that they're using a master DAT and playing live, miked instruments
over the top. that's what they were doing the 2nd time I saw Moby. but I
don't recall how many live instruments were used the last time I saw (in
Oakland, CA...MATOS, do you remember?) it was an all dance set too, so the
use of live instruments was scaled down.
>would hate it too, to have me spend a minute or two reorganizing my modules
>after every song....
yes, audiences usually suffer from extremely short attention span. the more
simple & scaled down you can make it, the easier it's going to be to pull
off. you can make a DAT of your 'backbone' tracks and bring only your live
instruments. experience has taught me that it's better than trying to bring
your whole studio.

I seem to recall that when Moby plays live it's about half-and-half. I work
at First Avenue in Minneapolis, and the last time Moby played there (I had
to work in the 7th St. Entry, next door--smaller annex room for local and
touring bands, great and all, but DAMN! I missed Moby, grrr), I was there
for soundcheck. It sounded like about 50-60 percent of the music was piped
in, and the rest was live. But I've always heard rumors that his musicians
are just miming anyway, so who fucking knows?

I think the end of May is enough. People have already had so much time to
complete and send their music, that I don't think much more will drop in.
My experience from earlier Internet projects of this type is that the
longer you wait, the greater the risk that key persons wirking on the
project disappear and the whole project gets wasted.
But I'd like to hear other opinions as well...are their still people
working on tracks for the CD?
Cheers,
Johan.

I don't think my e-mails get through all the time... Still, I'm
going to repeat something I asked a while ago, but I think didn't get to
mobility......
I have some friends who are in a band who REALLY want to preform FACE IT
at a local festival for local bands this August. Problem is, we can't
get hold of the sheet music for it. Keep looking, at the moment they are
just listening to Face It over and over and over again to learn the
song, but this is a hard way to learn a song, escpecially considering
there is the five minute brilliant guitar solo to learn. So, can anyone
help us, please.......
Somebody told me where to get the lyrics a while ago, cheers,
but we need the sheet music.
Oh, I know two more compelations ( free on magezines) Moby's been
on..
Metal Hammer: Brutal Bunch 3 (Someone to Love)
Kerrang ( can't remember the name of it) ( Soft)
Hope this gets through...

Oh really? I would take it as a compliment!
Anyway, Daniel (Cerman) - where did you get that Moby quote
from? He did say something similar in that interview I read
- - but I know he gave more away.
Sorry Kohut (you explained the pronounciation very well by
the way), I couldn't get hold of the actual interview from
my friend to relay to you. We've been unable to make
contact for over a week. I fear it is a lost cause now.
Will keep in touch.

Subject: (mobility) How Moby Plays Live
Good morning, mobiliteers! The following message is from MOBY:
when i play live it's done in three different ways depending on the
song:
1)electronic song type one: live drums, live bass, live keyboards,
live percussion, samples and other things on hard disk. the stuff
on hard disk is playback, but it's not a dat. not that i have a problem
with dat, but generating playback from hard disk gives me a lot more
compositional freedom.
2)electronic song type two: same as above but with playback coming
from a sequencer on stage hooked up via midi to samplers, synths, etc.
basically this is the same as #1, except that in #1 the sequencer and
equipment are in my house when i record them to hard disk. doing things
from a sequencer on stage gives the performer more flexibility with the
arrangement, whereas doing the sequences at home onto hard disk gives you
more control regarding the overall sound.
3)rock song: all live instruments, nothing on computer or playback.
so that's it. that's how i play live. i have three other musicians
with me when i play live. at present they are:
ali mcmordie-bass
scott frassetto-drums, guitar, keyboards
pablo cook-percussion, drums, keyboards
and me, moby-percussion, keyboards, guitar, vocals.

Hey everyone, since the first Thanks CD went off so well, I was just wondering
how many of you are really looking forward to this second incarnation. I, for
one am VERY excited to have it come out! (Although, I do not want to rush it
and make it subpar.) I love to hear all the other ideas y'all have with Moby's
music!
I know that things tend to get hectic this time of year for us students, but
maybe we can get some more tracks together to put together a SOLID release.
You all know you want to!

Moby's new album, "Play", will be released worldwide by Mute Records on May
17, except in the US and Canada, where V2 Records will release the album on
June 1, and in Japan, where Mute will release it on July 7.
To celebrate the album's release, Moby will be performing live at midnight
on May 31 at the Virgin Megastore in Union Square, New York. Plans are
being made for an World Wide Web broadcast. Moby will also be hosting a
number of special launch parties in key US markets immediately prior to and
after the release of the record.
Unfortunately, due to his global promotional commitments, Moby's two live
shows at the Scala in London on May 19 and 20 have been rescheduled to
September 21 and 22. These new dates will launch a six-week tour of Europe;
extensive tour dates for the US, Canada, Australia and Japan are currently
being set up.
Tickets bought for the original Scala shows will be valid for the new
dates, or refunds can be obtained from point of purchase.
