two.

Whaaaaa?!!! Steve--ever heard of, you know, FUNK?! That's totally what
"Whip It" was--Devo doing their version of a funk song. (And don't
think the folks who it was tributing/sending up didn't respond--Bootsy
Collins and George Clinton both professed their love for it, and
Prince was certainly influenced by it.) In fact, "Whip It" was (along
with "Blue Monday" and "Cars" by Gary Numan) one of the first
important new-wave/funk crossover hits, and influenced the early
Detroit techno guys (Atkins, May, Saunderson), who in turn influenced
Moby.

(shakes off the patronizing) I think you read me wrong. Allow me to
clarify. Musical content aside, the lyrics are undeniably goofy. Once
you see the video, it comes across as even goofier. To me, it sounds
like they are parodying an attitude with the lyrics. (not a sound!)
When he sings the imperative "You must whip it..." I imagine some
authority figure telling me (with a tone of grave importance) that I
must follow some rule.
I mean, how do you answer that with matched seriousness?
"Yes sir, I will whip it sir, right away!"
Hence the parody of authority interpretation.
It's the bizarre juxtaposing of the bouncy, fun song and the almost
seriously conveyed yet sugar-high lyrics that make me like it.
Thanks for the informative musical family tree branch.

really isn't. trust me, my brother listens to the stuff. the only part
that comes close is where moby sings "too late" really low and growly.
new dawn fades is awesome, as is my love will never die.

I'm not much of a metal expert, but I have
to say that Moby's "Whip It" doesn't
sound much like death metal to me--at
least not in the sense of Slayer or Napalm
Death. For one thing, it's REALLY SLOW.
It's more like dirge-metal. But maybe not....

But the lyrics parody funk too! Stuff like
the Dazz Band's "Let It Whip" or any
number of other "shake-that-thang" type
nonsensical lyrics. So yes, they are
parodying an attitude, the one that
pervaded every funk track of the period.
The two go together, you can't separate
them. It was a bunch of skinny, geeky
white guys poking fun at the (musical and
lyrical) conventions of badass black funk.
And doing it well, too.
>When he sings the imperative "You must whip it..." I imagine some

That makes sense, given how utterly
unauthoritative Devo sound. If James
Brown sang it, it'd probably be
convincing--he'd be telling you how HE
whips it, and you'd believe him. Devo do it,
and it's like, "Who the fuck are you?" Which
just enhances the parody.

Marcel Duchamp was a visual artist, not a musician. :) He was a Dadaist and
is famous for his painting "Nude Descending a Staircase." I'll bet you

Is it the same as with "Let's go free", a boring album track that,

Not speaking for the person who originally wrote the letter, but for me,
seeing the song live just showed the raw power - and emotion - of the song.
It's an energy release...showing that ppl can do what ever they so
choose...making the most out of life...AND enjoying the moment.
That's just my take on it.
Cheers!

Diverging slightly from Moby's guitar based stuff to his
music under his pseudonyms. How would you compare DJ Cake
stuff to Lopez? Still, haven't got round to hearing any

possible to even compare?
By the way Bart, where did you say you got your Lopez/DJ

yes, "thousand",as it appeared on thunderdome 3 (i don't remember the subtitle,
they have funny quotes as subtitles such as "hell on earth" or "killing
playground"), i used to be much into this kind of music called "hardcore", or
especially in netherlands "gabba" (but that' another story) and i can proudly
recommend to you, try it. try to dance to the sound of THOUSAND, with all the
stroboscopes around you pushing you with their light explosions, with the fre-
quency getting higher and higher. and then, when the 1015 BpM comes, it's like
a salvation. unlike the nowadays house stuff, where you just pump around with
boom-ts-boom-ts-boom-ts. this is a real BoomBoomBoomBBBBBOOOOBBOOOOMMMM.
and i don't think THOUSAND should be treated like a less worthy moby song,
because it was a song, which bound a lot of techno fans to moby, that days.

I suppose people's classification of music is more
subjective than objective.
I'd love to hear Moby do some folk/new world music - now
that would be intriguing. Didn't this topic get really
ridiculous about a year ago when there was talk of Moby
doing polka and the waltz (jokingly of course)?

Subject: (mobility) RUN ON!!! GOT IT!!!
WHOOOOOOOOOOOHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!
YEEEEAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!
Today (04-23-1999) I got the 2 Run On CDs I'd pre-ordered.
THEY KICK ASS!
(their official release date is the 26th isn't it? So how come I have
them now?....I got them at the store, nothing special....)
Here are my VERY first impressions of the B-Sides written when
I first listened to the songs:
Spirit:
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- -----------------------
Huh? real classical sounttrack kinda music? mmm, nice strings!
Hey, my mother listens to this kind of music too! Sounds very much
like the classical album (called Forever) the German techno group
Dune made! WHOOOOOHEEEE fast breakbeats, piano & strings!
Then all is quiet again, leaving only the strings, slowly dieing away
into silence.....
Running:
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- ------------------------
Mmm, nice beat, kinda like the one in Into The Blue (summer night mix)
Don't like the synth sound, but mixed with other instruments it sounds OK
The music reminds me of the B-Sides of the "one of us" single by Dune!
Wow, beautyful! the the vocal samples make up for everything, giving the
song a bit of a sad tone. Nice song...
HEY, Where did the music go?
This song has a weird, sudden ending man!
Sunday:
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- ------------------------
Immediately I think of Micronesia. Hey, that synth! almost like Faithless!
I'm glad Moby still knows how to make a house beat.
(like in Honey (Risk Mix), Honey (Dark Mix) and Honey (Low Side Mix)
these also have real (techno) housebeats by Moby)
Hey, Moby uses the same bassline sound as in Honey's Low side Mix.
Cool, the same pianos as in GO. Very melodic! Very Moby!
Wow, I didn't know 5 minutes could pass so quickly...
Down Slow (Full Length Version)
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- ------------------------
Starts really trippy. Hmm, Moby really starts to sound like Dune!
This song sounds like another B-Side from the "one of us" single
called Black Sands.... What a resemblance!
Not much instruments here, but I like it just as much as the other
B-Sides.
Ratings (out of 10):
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- -------------------------
Spirit: 9.5
Running: 8 - (because of the ugly synth...)
Sunday: 9.0
Down Slow: 9.5
PLEASE, DON'T FLAME ME!!
These are my honest, very first impressions and they may change after
a few listens... If you for example really like the synth in Running I
respect
that.
I'd like to hear everybody else's first impression of the songs!
