Subject: Re: (mobility) puffy no-no
I was reading these messages about hip-hop and electronica and such, and
I had to post something and give my 7 cents worth...
As for the origin of hip-hop and such...those roots run as deep as
spoken language, from the tribes in Africa, to the folk songs of the
60's (thats 1860's) to the Gospel and Civil Rights marches of the
1960's....blues, jazz, gospel, all are the roots of hip-hop. These where
also the roots of what we call Rock and Roll. I think hip-hop is still a
very strong cultural force, as was the soul music of the sixties and
seventies (Aretha Franklin, Sly and The Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield,
Marvin Gaye (aka THE MAN) )....
As for "electronica"...well it along with all other modern music has
its roots from the stuff mentioned above...but The founders as someone
put it where groups like the KLF (aka the great ones), Liam Howlett,
Alex Patterson, and then the classic 80's synth bands also had a lot to
do with it like Erasure (aka the other great ones), Depeche Mode, New
Order, the Police etc...I am not a big "electronica" listner, but I love
my music, and want the originating groups to get some credit (of course
i did not mention them all, and that is just a small list to say the
least).
I would really like to see Moby collaberate with some of hip-hops
finest...I think he would work great with acts like Dj Premier, Chuck D,
Kurrupt, Digital Undergound, RZA just to mention a few...I think he
could help make aware, those who *hate* hip-hop....
As for a moby note...I listened to the Joy Division tribute... (yeah
the one with NEw Dawn Fades (moby version) ). It is really good. I also
saw a used EIW here in my very small college town...nice to see.
BTW any word a possible release date for the new album (if he gets
another record company)?
Now Playing: The Manic Street Preachers (aka the other great ones too)

AS I looked over the message I just sent...I forgot to mention Moby as
one of the founders of "electronica"...well he is, and I think we all
know that...I just took it as a given.

hey, at amazon.com they have the
"Cum On Baby" cd single for $8 bucks.
I think that this is the U.S. version. Will one of you guys tell me
what the track listing is please(hopefully there aren't twenty different
cum on baby singles).
Do you think that "Love hole" is on it? I'm in love with that song.
thanks. bye.
oh btw, amazon has the 2cd import of animal rights for 32 bucks(but
that's a bit overpriced I guess).

That's offensive. Pardon me. I'm a teenager.
>>I think that this is the U.S. version.
Sure is! Love Hole is only on the 2CD limited version. The limited version
has Love Hole, Hymn (live), and an additional Eskimos & Egypt mix. The US
single has Come On Baby, the Crystal Method Mix, an Eskimos & Egypt mix,
Whip It (deathmetal), Go (live), and ATINITBL (live).
>>2cd import of animal rights for 32 bucks
That's rough. Shop elsewhere. I recommend the following independent stores.
They have different selections than the majors do. You'll find 7", 12",
promo CDs, and all sorts of out-of-print material in these dark little
corners of the music retail universe.
http://www2.vinylvendors.com/VinylVendors/
Based in Cali, nice promos and the like. Get the ETYTM promo while they
still have it! Try Moby in the top 3 search lines.
http://www.vvinyl.com/
Two letter v's, not w. East coast US store, good selection.
http://www.personal.u-net.com/~crac/
UK, some old 12"s, check all sections, Moby's spread out.
http://www.vinaledge.com/
A little bit of Moby. Cool store, great people, fast turnaround.
http://www.action-records.co.uk/
My favorite UK record store. Many cool Moby items here. UK PAL video promos,
t-shirts, great music selection, etc.
http://www.slcd.com/
US store, great for promos, but they're low on Moby stuff right now. The
ETYTM promo CD w/ 3 mixes is here, too. They have a BBMH promo that has
three tracks on the US commercial release, nothing special. Several one
track radio promos. Check out the selections available for your favorite
band. It'll make your head spin a bit. Thanks for the link, delobbo.
http://www.ebay.com
The online auction I keep blathering about. If you haven't checked it out,
you should. Lots of extreme coolness here.
A good way to find cool online music stores is to search on different
engines for combos like 'dance vinyl' 'techno records' , etc. Mix and match
for different results. Investigate. So much stuff I never knew existed.
Worth your while.

>>What was it like when you first saw Moby perform?
I saw him at House Of Blues in Chicago on Dec 1st, 1997. Good show. I got a
big rush out of seeing him live and watching him explode with energy
onstage. I've posted about this before, it's in the archives, probably
April. I was a bit down on the live vs. DAT thing then, but I've stopped
considering 'musical integrity' as an important ingredient in a live
performance. I just enjoy what is presented. I'm not saying Moby lacks live
integrity, (he works hard up there) but I do think he could liven things up
a bit by adding more live elements to his stage performance. He does play
guitar, and Pablo does some cool drum solos, but Moby's show is limited by
prerecorded stuff. I enjoy watching him scream and jump, but I'd like to see
him do more to his 'dance' songs. Usually he bangs his drumpad. I'd like to
see him take a break from flying across the stage to punch some sequences
into a keyboard or something.
By the time I saw him in May, I think it was, at the University Of Chicago,
I wasn't considering any of this. It was an adventure, taking trains,
walking in a college neighborhood, posing as a student, etc. I suppose I
don't get out enough. Anyways, the weather was pristine, the show was
outdoors, the setting was cozy and the shrubbery was in full bloom. The
crowd was young and energetic, and I was hyped! I had a great time. Moby
didn't have any walls, so he had to expend energy creatively. He was
jumping, flinging himself off of the speakers, and of course, screaming
LOVE! Let's not forget the token "Thank you. My name's Moby." The setlists
were close, I know he opened with Ah-Ah for both shows. He did more guitar
this time, too. Free Moby tank top w/ t-shirt purchase, can't beat that. I
had to leave half-way through seeing Busta Rhymes or I'd have been stranded,
which was unfortunate. He was goofy and very entertaining from the parts of
his set I saw. I completely missed Sonic Youth since I took a later train
there than planned. I'd really like to see Moby's DJ set. Anybody with
stories?
Enough loudmouthing from me for one day. :)

seriously, last digest, there was like one mention of the word "moby"
once. come on, if ya dont got a moby post, dont say nuthin!!!!
okay, what moby would i introduce at a party to myfamily. well, i did
request JBT at my sisters bat mitzvah (like i said...it was the only
moby they had, and the dj said moby's been requested by name before.)
but all my grandparents and people that heard it probly didnt
recagnize it.
anyway also as i said, i played ilts for my mom, and her response was
fairly positive. her opinion on techno tho, is prodigy is way too loud
and obnoxious (at least the nu stuff..i havent played the older stuff
4 her but she probly wouldnt like it anyway.) and orbital is nice but
a little quiet (at least in sides is) and chemical bros is just right.
(at list dig yr own hole is.)
eeeek! non-moby! anyway, i also said that if i could be a dj and
introduce everyone to one moby song, it would be slight return. well,
yes that, but im thinking about honey too. especially if there were
black people listening. especially the kidz who listen to most modern
rnb (not exactly puffy, but like, monica and brandy and stuff.) but i
think their parents would appreciate it more. or maybe people who
lissten to funk music, whatever.
i dont know, i just wonder what they would think.
but i would probably play a bunch of oby. hell, i could play moby for
an hour straight and if i didnt say anything, everyone would assume i
was mixing it up playin different bands. then id say it was all moby
at the end and theyd be like, "whoah!"
hm.....what do i have to say about moby? oh yes....who started this
moby and jewel thing? is this something someone started here on the
list, or is it somethinng someone read somewhere, or talked to the man
himself about?
clay, dont go!!!!!!!
just got the new squirrel nut zippers from the library. awesome. i
love "the kraken" and "low down man" and "suits are picing up the
bill" and a few more. i think they rule because theyre not your
typical "swing band". i mean, those songs i mentioned (the first 2
anyway) dont sound shit like brian setzer, thats rockabilly. and the
cherry poppin daddys are a ska band that jumped on the wagon. but some
of theuir stuff is ok. but on the zippers cd, track 3 is a polka song!
wouldnt moby and the zips make a good team? he could do that polka
song some of us had always wanted him to do! tho i still agree a ska
version of ETYTM would be cool. but not a bosstones/reel big fish type
ska song, like a hepcat type song. older ska kicks ass, the newer
stuff (mostly) sux.
okay, like i ssaid before, we should compile a list of questions to
ask the man if anyone of us interviews him. my question is...
"What is up with the "honey" video? Why are you driving a car?????"
okay? someone want to write that one down?
bye now.....joe biscuit, over and out......
np:crustacean, "purple" (I LOOOOOOVE THIS SONG! anyone know anything
about it? who is it? is it out in america?)

Subject: (mobility) About Mobility
Hi. I don't remeber who asked the question or who responded to it, but it was
a day or 2 ago. Someone asked about a Devo cover done by Moby and then someone
else lashed out against them for being such a moron as to not check the
moby.org site. I don't know who this was, maybe Paul someone maybe not, but it
was pretty harsh. Now, what I want to know is why the hell was that neccisary?
All this clay and Xaq that was going on was fine with me, pretty funny
actually, but that post against a simple question was simply out of line. At
least someone was talking about Moby, which seems to be farthest from what the
rest of the list was talking about. Everyone knows about Moby.org. Personally,
I haven't been there for a few months, but the last time I went, the
discodgraphy was a mess. Maybe it is better now, but I would rather ask this
list then look through that list. Maybe it would provaoke a conversation, some
thing this list desperatly needs. Besides, it wasn't a question like how many
tracks are on EIW, because that question is pointless and should be found in
the discrography. I didn't know that Moby did I Devo mix and even though I
really don't care much for Devo, maybe someone will ask a question one day
that I will not have know and be very interested in. But maybe they won't
because they are afraid of getting yelled at by someone with a pissy attitude.
You want to get mad? Get mad about people talking about Psycho (I should be
very mad since no new movies come out in Japan until at least 5 months later
than America), but don't start scaring people to talk about Moby on the
Mobility list. Thanks. Later.

Nope, it's the same Moby set as from MM2, but all on one track this time
instead of indexed song-by-song.

Hi all,
hope everyone is having a pleasant evening.
someone had asked about influencing others with Moby's music.
My roommate loves his ambient music...and also thinks come on baby sounds
like a miami vice theme (think I might've written that before). I love
his faster dancey tracks myself so, I think FSR, and GMOTFOTW is another
great one to introduce......
I went to a fraternity party once, no really...the theme was a rave. Ok,
now I know your laughing...anyway, they were supposed to have hired a d.j.
from NYC to come and spin...and being that I go to school in Syracuse, it
snowed and he wasn't able to make it in here cuz the highway was closed or
some shnit like that. So, being that I ALWAYS seem to carry some CD's on
me, threw in Bring Back my Happiness and the place started to jump.
Didn't leave the house til the wee hours of the morning, dancing non-stop.
I had a ton of people ask me about Moby since then, and made some good
friends that night, one in particular I keep in touch with on a daily
basis. So I'm touching the Greek community, one Moby song at a time.
The first and sadly, only time I've seen moby perform was here at
Syracuse, last year, April. I joined the list the next day I think, dying
to know more than I did. He opened with Ah-Ah as well and was WONDERFUL!!
I felt like the only person there. I felt dizzy I was so excited to
FINALLY see him live. I've never had a musician do that to me. I got to
meet him after the show, and to my surprise no one had come up to him, but
myself and 2 other people. I don't have to describe the experience I'm
sure you all know or could guess.
Was anyone on the list at this show?
nitey nite,
danielle
