so i go home for lunch from work and i see the paper i've been hoping to
see for weeks. the little notice that a parcel is waiting for me at the
local postal pick-up thingy.
i received my moby shirts in the mail today-the folks over at def also sent
me the honey t-shirt. it has the orange pumpkin on the front with
moby-honey written on the back. it's a pleasure to do business with them.
wuhoo!

it's also good to see some fellow canadians on this list-and wow! welcome
kelly-and the west coast (vancouver) is not what it's all cracked up to be.
scenic, yes-but lacking in the culture i got from back home (montreal)
and.... they do not film the x-files here anymore...it's weird seeing palm
trees and sunshine now on the show....soon enough, scully will be walking
around in a bathing suit and applying suntan lotion to skinner.

i got 4 or 5 moby digests over the last few days. good to see, good to see...

clay-you still make my day with your postings.
i agree with the erasure cd being what it is. pop bliss, in fact, next to
moby-they might be one of the most under-rated synth pop bands around. they
have the fan-base, just no radio play.

other than electronic-ah, i listen to ska, punk, folk, industrial (often
this and electronic-ah are lumped together..), jean michel jarre, squirrel
nut zippers, new order, world-beat (realworld stuff), shoegazer (slowdive
is the best band in the world..for me...this month...)

so-along with the shirts got some stickers and a little merchandise onfo
sheet saying that a new single will be out in march of 99. any news on that?

*I think shaved heads are supercool.  I've been shaving my head for a few
years now.  I believe that everyone should shave their heads--men and women
alike.  There's too much burden surrounding an unshaved head.  People worry
all the time if their hair looks OK, they have to spend $$$ on hair care
products, their drains get clogged, they have to worry about lice, and so
on.  When I first shaved my head I was blown away by the new found freedom
and refreshment I experienced.

*I admit that that's what I listen to primarily.  I dig most of all music
w/out words--whether electronic music, jazz, classical, and so on--I often
feel that there's a lot more quality put into that work.  But then I grew
up on hip hop and find myself repressing to that every now and then.  I
also enjoy a tidbit of punk, hardcore, ska, pop, alternative, whatever
every now and then.  I've also been guilty of watching some MTV when I'm
bored.

*Didn't we have that argument a few months ago about labeling music
"electronica"?  IMHO, Labels aren't the best thing, but there are times
that they help.  I don't think anyone's trying to "stick it to electronic
music" by labeling it.  We label every kind of music.  It would be worse to
go into a record store and have every CD crammed together with no idea of
what any of the music will sound like.  And hey, even if little kids going
around using it as a buzz word or not that's no prob. 'cause I still dig
the music eh?  That's enough from me on that for now....

It was esp. odd 'cause the supposed station that was hosting the special

Moby is the only 'electronic' musician i listen to.  i liked the 'drum
and bass' catagory for a little while last year, but i've loved the
Beatles, Pearl Jam, and REM for years and i'll always love them.

i don't really care for the word ambient cause sometimes it means the

much too over-used.
i think we need more words to more accurately categorize the very
specific meanings we wish to convey.

i dont know if youre getting the two confused, but i dont
want them all to be called electronicA..
I just like the description "Electronic Music"
music that is supported by or soley made with electronic instruments.
samplers, keyboards, synths, whatnot..

everytime i hear the word electronicA, all i think of is
the band RepublicA

Yes.  Due to a bug in my message HTMLifying software, archives after
a certain date look like garbage.  I need to fix the program, and I
will.  I've been really busy lately, though, and haven't had the time
yet.  But I am still collecting the archives, and once the program
gets fixed, they will be posted and updated more regularly again.

see..... what happens!  i'll bet you started that about the time you had
them refresssshments.  there's a direct correlation between being
bald-happy and wanting to watch mtv when bored.
i have a suggestion if you are bored.........
grow hair.  really. it's a fun and exciting hobby and a great way to
pass the time.  first you just sit there and after a few days you see
these little nubby things starting to grow....well...you get the
picture. and it's cheaper than tatoos.
and for yar unfortunate victims of non-self-inflicted baldness

...(and therefore boredom)....and thusly mtv (gasp)......

we still have a remedy.

Yes, I think Globe is good. No, I don't think they are extremely talented. AI
don't know if the kids here are smarter or just eating it up, but the CDs are
soo damn expensive here that they had better follow their tastes unless daddy
drives  Mercedes. All of the J-Pop is like the Spice Girls. I like the Spice
Girls, but kno wthey are pretty much talentless. Globe is more along the lines
of Ray of Light than Spice World, but it really has something that makes me
not want to take it out of the CD player. Try and findit online somewhere on
RA.

And to Kelly - I don't know if you are into Orbital, but you should join the
Orbital Mailing list. There is a girl on the list who is exactly like you and
also lives in Canada. Maybe Toronto or Montreal. Aimee I think. You should

    Girls with shaved heads are, very nearly, the bomb. The ones I've
seen look really good. Of course I'm also infatuated with Ani DiFranco
when she had braids and the blue/green hair. I can't tell you how many
times I've drooled over the insert to 'Dilate'.

   Yup, that pretty much sums up everything. But, wouldn't it be
moderately safe to assume that all types of music today are based
(either directly or loosely) based on classical music?
   Also, it seems that more often than not, "Electronic music"
collections contain the word "Electronica". For instance, "Electronica",
"Electronica 2" (which has Moby's "Feeling So Real" on it, as well as
Voodoo Child's Lopez mix of "Dog Heaven".), and I'm sure there are
countless others.

do you really think that the mass market is mindless? that seems really
insulting. i've noticed musicians and nonmusicians consume music at rather
different standards. just because a band isn't totally innovative and original
doesn't mean they can't be appreciated for other reasons, such as sentiment or
emotion or amusement. and sure there are some "suits" that are only out for a
buck, but i've met a lot of them who just want their product to find its way
to people for whom it will be useful. hence the use of target marketing.

these are just some thoughts of mine. it still scares me when people
automatically use the words "suits" and "evil" together.

_Teen Spirit_ (which tells about Nirvana's songs), I came across the
following about "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", a Leadbelly song:

   "In 1933, folk archivist John Lomax was travelling throughout the
southern United States, making simple recordings of "found" music-work
songs, back porch blues, murder ballads and assorted folk tales. They
had discovered that one of the richest sources of this kind of music was
behind prison bars-prisoners who had little else to do but sing their
songs to pass the time. In Louisiana, Lomax recognized a singular talent
when he recorded several of Ledbetter's original songs. He went to the
Louisiana governor and interceded on Ledbetter's behalf-the singer, who
was in on a charge of attempted murder, was pardoned after he proved his
worth by writing a song especially for the governor."


    It goes on more about him, but I just found this interesting. If
this was mentioned before, then I apologize.

Perhaps I generalized too much. I did not mean 'all', I meant 'many'. There
are many out there not interested in the music at all, only how it can be
manipulated to make money. I do feel that the mass market is largely

repetition. My use of 'evil' may have been to harsh. That really should have
been clearly directed at those who perpetuate a lack of integrity &
imagination. One may argue that the existance of fans for say, the Spice
Girls, validates the process of false image and monetary focus.

This hard to communicate clearly. Allow me this comparison.

Have you seen the new commercial for some quesadilla recipe, where it shows
two stereotypical teenage boys acting extremely stupid? They smell 'good'
food, think it's take-out night, and go to the kitchen where they tell the
Mom how great she is, and that she should learn the recipe for the
quesadillas, when in fact she made them. They use words phrases like "Way
cool, Mom!" & "Allright dude! Takeout night!" They reflect an America of
idiot kids and condoning moms in an attempt to identify with the viewer.
While they may succeed, I'm personally insulted by the way they show it as
'OK' and 'normal' to be this way. Without saying or implying it, the
commercial embraces this message: Stupidity is the norm, your kids are
stupid, we at Acme food understand this, we understand each other, buy our
product.

I want to be challenged by my music, not comforted in my own stupidity.

The mass music market feeds bland oatmeal to a market that eats only bland
oatmeal and is afraid to try strawberry flavor, because they are comfortable
with the bland, and everybody else eats the bland, so on with the bland.
Now, you can say that because everybody eats the bland and like it that all
is wonderful. Sure. But lots of good flavors are ignored, wasted in fact,
while the bland is continually the only flavor easily accessible. I find it
appalling. Another food analogy. Everybody wants McDonald and ignores the
gourmet cuisine becuase McD's is fast, accessible, and easy to swallow.
Nobody is willing to put forth the effort to cook and enjoy the gourmet, but
for a few. You can't be a lover of fine wines until you've tasted them and
can appreciate them. I want the US to ditch their grape juice and open their
minds.

It's too bad conformity is cool in my neighborhood. Lots of these kids have
amazing potential if only they can break the bonds of mediocrity taught to
them by an insecure peer group, and parents neglecting to teach the value of
self.

Back to the Spice Girls. They're fun. I have no problem with little girls
having fun listening to the Spice Girls. I do have a problem with
discouraging development of musical taste. The record companies cook up
albums by a formula that sells just like McD's does with burgers. While much
of the music out there is fun, it doesn't demand anything of the listener,
it doesn't reward the ponderance of itself, it doesn't grow in depth with
time. It's just disposable styrofoam music that is fun, but ultimately
harmful, not for what it does, but for what it doesn't do.

However, diversity & originality are slow things to create and to
appreciate, and those elements are not friends of the runaway smash hit.
Which is a friend of money. So a large amount of the most frequently played
music not original, diverse, challenging, or thoughtful. But damn if it
ain't profitable.

Stifle your radios, not your heads.

Remember, I said most, not all. I love U2, and they're huge.

Moby is a very emotional kinda guy. I think he likes the fun and mindless
bit the Spice Girls represent. A bit of escapism for him. After, he does let
the world's problems rest on his shoulders.
