Of course, whether one likes REM or not, they have to be considered
one of the 3 most influential Modern/Alternative music groups of the
80's, along with The Replacements and possibly even the Smiths. You
might even count The Pixies up there, too. Sorry for the non-Moby post,
but I just wanted to throw my 2 cents into the well.

It's a lot like the radio edit (which is what is on the CD), but it
builds up longer and better. Things that may have taken 16 or 32
beats to develop in the full version were edited down to maybe 8 beats.
In some cases, it means you only hear once a piece of the song that
is repeated in the full version. In other cases, such as when musical
elements are layered on, entire sections were edited out. Also,
scratching and some "hit it" sample was glopped onto the radio edit.
I love "Move (You Make Me Feel So Good)". I first heard it mixed in
the Friday & Saturday night mix shows on a local pop radio station.
Of course, I didn't hear the whole thing because it was always mixed
with other songs, and the DJ was an idiot so he'd make gross pitch/
tempo changes in the middle of the song. It took me years of
searching before I found it on UK vinyl. I still have never seen
the US Move 12".
Unfortunately, the only record player I have access to is a 22-year-
old stereo that belongs to my parents. It adds a lot of noise to the
playback, can't handle the phat bass of today's tracks, and does not
play these wonderful records with anywhere near the clarity of sound
that is on the vinyl. People have warned me that it probably also
damages the records when they are played. Old '60s and '70s albums
sound fine on it, but it can't handle Moby. I really want to get a
new turntable so I can rescue a lot of rare music from the vinyl and
get it into some other medium so I can enjoy it. Unfortunately, I
have no idea what to get or how much I'd have to spend. I've been
told that I need a good receiver (I don't know how to shop for them)
because a turntable's output needs amplification. And I don't know
what kind of turntable to get. I'm not going into business as a DJ,
and don't want to spend anywhere near the startup costs for doing
that just to hear my 12"s.
Jeers to Mute and Elektra for not releasing the full version of
"Move" on CD.
> Also can it be found on CD? I've looked for it before on the discography
> but I didn't see it on anything other than vinyl.
No, it's only available on vinyl. And I think that the vinyl is out
of print, so get it while you can. Try Mutebank (linked from the
merchandise page of moby.org).
Actually, a couple times I've seen at online import places a _Move_
CD that has seven tracks. CD Europe, which does a notoriously bad
job of providing accurate information about what it sells, made it
look like a Canadian release. I ordered it at its ridiculous price
of between $30 and $40, but after a couple months they just said it
was out of stock or print or something. Later, I found it listed in
CD Banzai's catalog as a Japanese release. I ordered it again, for
an exhorbitant price, just because I love it so much and I'm curious
and really want it on CD. It never came, and CD Banzai didn't give
me my money back.
So somewhere out there, I think this 7-track _Move_ EP CD exists.
What could the extra track be? I think there's a good chance that
it would be another "Move" remix. Maybe the full unslaughtered
version of the song. Maybe the excellent Sub Version (which is
on the limited German CD, and the US CD promo). But nobody seems
to know. HEY STEVE!!! We could use your detective skills here! :)

You're not kidding about how weak most turntables are. My dad's
almost blows up with so much bass and background noise if I listen to
anything over 2 (volume) on it. Of course, I have no Moby vinyl because
I'm apparently too cheap to spend any money on records. I did finally
find Moby's "BBMH" single at a music store, so I bought it about a week
ago, although it was (obviously) on cd. Pretty good. Maybe someone can
play Moby backwards and see if there are any hidden satanic messages on
his records.

I finally heard all of honey. I really like it, and its been stuck in my
head since 3:30 am this morning. I was suprised to find it. I was
looking for a cd to play for my radio show and picked up the Permanent
Midnight Sndtrk, I did not know the song was on there, but I was really
thrilled to finally here it. I think it is very different from what moby
has done, but I think that is good.
Anyway, on another note, I remember someone here posted a message
dealing with a website where you can pick songs that you can put on a cd
and have it mailed to you, does anyone still have that address. I was
looking for it, but could not find it. Thanks a lot.

Yes okay, they may have been quite influential in the
beginning, but afterwards I just found them tedious. The
Pixies are definitely in there though, amongst others. I
think that 'The Jesus and Mary Chain', in the mid-80s were
the first of their kind. There was nothing like them
before, with their unique sounding buzz-saw guitars and
feedback - the Psychocandy album is a classic! Sorry just
had to reply to that - Moby now.....

Ah, but you forgot yet another influential group. Okay, okay, maybe I'm a
bit biased, but Husker Du was definitely a huge influence on many of those
bands that you hear nowadays. For chrissake, Junkie XL (I believe) sample
"Divide and Conquer" on their most recent album....and actually, when
people talk about the triumverate of 80's college rock, they're usually
talking about REM, the Replacements, and Husker Du.

Agreed. The Jesus and Mary Chain made some fine records, not the least of
which was Psychocandy. And jeez...with Honey's Dead and even their newest
(thank god it wasn't like Stoned and Dethroned...), JAMC definitely have
their foot in the door.
And yeah, while we're on the subject, why don't we throw Pavement, Yo La
Tengo, Polvo, Spaceman 3, Galaxie 500, and few hundred other bands into
the "bands that made alternative music" group.
All in all....my vote's for Galaxie 500 and Joy Division.
Oh, and a bit of Moby...I finally got to hear "Honey" the other day (it's
on the soundtrack for Permanent Midnight, the new Ben Stiller flick), and
I really just don't like it. As I told my friend, maybe the remixes are
better....sorry.

Agreed - of course no need to mention Joy Division,
Spaceman 3, etc. You could also throw in Cocteau Twins,
Echo and the Bunnymen, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Killing
Joke - the list is pretty large....and we could go on and
on, but let's not bore everyone.

that Moby is influenced by? Is there anyone he's influenced by?

Nice one for bringing back the relevant topic! I'm not
entirely sure what techno artistes influenced Moby!?
Judging by EOE, it sounds like Kraftwerk were certainly
influential (though at their time, I don't know if they
were described as 'techno'). All I know were some of the
punk rock influences of the late 70's and 80's - Black
Flag, etc. It's kinda weird that many old punk/new wave
outfits ended up dabbling with 'techno', eg. Leftfield,
Killing Joke, etc. Maybe it's got something to do with the
new, fresh, radical attitude of the original 'new wave'
scene!?

Moby is influenced by Mission of Burma & Echo and the Bunnymen, among
others.
I have the US Move 12", but it lacks a picture sleeve. It might be a promo,
I'm not sure offhand. It has the Elektra logo on it. I heard the radio
version on the CD first, so I like them both despite the short one's
lackings. The same thing didn't happen with the Instinct edits, though, they
were just plain silly.
For a turntable for Moby records just buy something new, modern, I think. It
shouldn't have to be professional. Get more info, I'm not all that well
informed, and I have the pro stuff so I didn't have to research it. Any
receiver with PHONO input as an option will work, that way you won't need a
pre-amp. The phono's signal is weak so if you send it in thru AUX it'll be
really quiet unless you boost it w/ the pre-amp. A phono input will take
care of this for you, and will have a grounder. (non-charged metal thing you
connect to reduce background static)
I'll look into that CD and see what I come up w/. There's fewer stores
specializing in dance CD than records, but I'll see what turns up. I like
the Sub Version too, and I think the Xtra mix is pretty funny. It's got that
playful loungy bassline, and fades out w/ this old old old skool drum
machine beat w/ a single whiste sound thrown in, I can just imagine the huge
grin on Moby's face when he did that. The MK Blades is definately worth
checking out too. These 3 are on the UK Move mixes 12" w/ the chopped Move
from the CD. It's got a really cool picture of Moby on the back that should
have been in the liners for the Move US CD. It's got this slo-mo photgraphy
effect while Moby swings his head. Is this on the CD, too?

No, that neat picture is not on the CD. I haven't heard a Move remix
that I dislike (my complaint with the radio edit is only because the
full version isn't also available on CD). I wish they were all on CD,
but I can see how the Xtra Mix would be just some vinyl fun. I like
that whole mix, but the funny ending is frosting on the cake. :)

Well if anyone wants the Move mixes on vinyl, here they are:
http://www.imvs.co.uk/catalogues.htm
The also have both Hymn 12", inluding all the German CD mixes. For details
check the discog, the catalog numbers are 12MUTE128 & L12MUTE158. They have
the ATINITBL/Whip It 7", The Story So Far on 12"LP, and they're the only
place I've seen with Moby cassette singles. A veritable fountain of goodies,
be sure to browse. They have 68 different Moby items, although a few are
repeats on different formats or countries.

they are. Thanks. Later.
