I think the abbreviations are a wonderful idea. Thanks, AJ.
Jonathan, since you've got exams now, that'll give Daniel time to see if he
has the old faq. Perhaps we can work off that. Speaking of interviews, I'd
like to ask Moby about that Japanese Sex Painting mystery, and verify that
which I'm sure of: that it is his voice at the beginning of "Blue Light".
BT is Brian Transeau, a music writer/producer from Maryland who makes a good
living off of Europe's far superior taste in music. (to the US) He did a
great song w/ Tori Amos, (who's managers discouraged her working w/ a
nobody) and was discovered by Sasha, a dj/producer, who heard his house mix
of a Led Zeppelin song. It seems that Moby & BT have many fans in common.
No, I don't think Moby & BT have worked with each other in any capacity
except for appearing at the same concerts. No mixes or collaborations.
I didn't know moby did mixes for N'Joi & Freddie Mercury that were
unreleased. Interesting. It's in the old discography.

Ok.. Then, we'll start talking about it in two weeks (this weekend, and my
next everlasting-exams week :( ).
By now, I'm going home to relax a bit seeing two old X-files chapters...
I know, but I cant avoid seeing them again :)
Got an idea about average profile of a Moby fan. We could draw interesting
results..
Hey, it's been great having an almost online chat with all of you. Later!

hey ryu, you collaborating w/ moby aint such a bad idea!
here's an idea....moby w/ someone like EBN or Coldcut or Negativland,
one of those like media manipualtors, that would be cool.
U2....well, i never really liked u2. they have a few good songs but
for the most part i think they suck. sorry.
bjork....well....i thnik bjorks music is ment to be more
abstract...like Mark Bell of LFO works better with bjork...of course

Got it! Actually, I found three different versions of it. They
really make me wish I was on the net in 1992 and 1993. Thoze wuz
neet timez, and the net was relatively young. Here are the files:
http://www.moby.org/info/MobyFAQ19920730.txt
http://www.moby.org/info/MobyFAQ19930101.txt
http://www.moby.org/info/MobyFAQ19930828.txt
They have some other things attached, such as ancient versions of
the Moby discography, and an Instinct discography. The 19930101
FAQ was apparently mislabeled 1 Jan 1992, so I corrected the date
in the filename (without modifying the file itself).
These old files and others have been locked away for years, known
only to a few people were active online five or six years ago,
like Lazlo Nibble. Actually, it's my fault for not bringing them
to light sooner. Shame on me. Sorry, folks. Mike Brown, whose
net accomplishments could fill at least one volume <g>, sent me a
ZIP file a long time ago when my Moby page was really taking off.
It included various little Moby-related snippets and these FAQs.
He generously passed these files on so that they could be used as
a resource for the discography and FAQ. I incorporated info from
the old Moby discography into my Moby discography, but since there
wasn't an actively-maintained Moby FAQ, the other files were kind
of overlooked. Until now. Have at it, boyz. :)
I'll let you know if I find any other interesting/relevant stuff
for possible inclusion in the FAQ. Good luck!

It's him, I'm sure. I've heard his voice on other things including
the _Animal Rights Interview_ disc. It's Moby's voice.
Moby's 33rd birthday is tomorrow.

Man, I was thinking you guys were talking about Blues Traveller. But
seriously folks, I picked up the BT mix of the new Madonna song today. It was
at Rolling Stones (for Steve G.) for 9.99. BTW, I remember when I was at Big
Top, when they introduced BT I distinctly remember hearing "Chicago's own."
Maybe the jazzie sounds of Roswell fucked me up (or was it those
shrooms.......hmmmm)

Thanks for the Rolling Stone info, Carmen!
>>"Chicago's own."
Who knows, maybe he lived here. His music career started from Maryland,
though. Hey Paul Simpson, the Gearwhore who now works out of California
actually started his music career here in Chicago. Now he's a bedroom
producer in LA, I think, and collaborated w/ Keoki on one of his tracks.
>Left above the clouds,
>Carmen B.
Nice reference. I suggested this to a friend the other day, and he loves it.
After checking out the old faqs I reread the old Moby posts in the info
section. When I first read them in March I was more sympathetic to the
anti-DAT group that was slamming Moby for "throwing on-stage temper
tantrums", among other things. While their arguments do hold water, they
also seem somewhat pointless. For instance, one person accused Moby of being
the musical taste police when he was writing about boring/fun live acts.
However, this was pure hypocrisy as the writer was the one being elitist,
not Moby. Why bother to make noise about DAT use when the show is good?
Besides, Moby now does more guitar stuff on stage, and uses mixes not
available, so it's not like playing one of his CDs really loud. Anyway, I'm
rambling and my point has long ago eluded me, but it's worth mentioning that
Lazlo Nibble, the discography guy who helped w/ the early Moby
discographies, was one of the most vocal anti-Moby writer in the alt.rave
thread.
Thanks for the info, Daniel, I now know that Moby only played some live
shows w/ Ultra Vivid Scene, and was on the road w/ Flipper. (I wonder did he
play onstage? doesn't matter now, really) Since the unreleased Dpeche Mode
mixes are mentioned in the discog, perhaps the Freddie Mercury & N'Joi ones
should be too? That b-side mentioned (in the last discog) w/ the Chaka Khan
samples is Mad Love. I'll get to hear it soon, if all goes well.

what's this about moby being in ultra vivid scene? i went to see ian
mccullough about nine years about (damn i feel old now) and UVS opened. at the
time it was rather painful to sit and listen through their set, but probably
because i didn't know them and wanted to see ian. how wierd to think he might
have been right there on stage and i didn't know it! the first moby show i
remember seeing had him paired up with meat beat manifesto and prodigy - what
a fine show that was. that was around the beginning of '93 i think.
one other question - why the pseudonames like voodoo child? too keep himself a
bit inaccessable and out of the mainstream?
adios amigos,
