Nope, but that fateful day should be coming around soon I figure. They've
both remixed Bowie, covered Joy Division & been remixed by Aphrodite. The
stars are all in alignment....;)

Oh Tim, you hit on a dream/fantasy of mine. Moby hit the road last year for
Animal Rights/Score about the same time U2 hit the states both times for
POP. I told all my friends I would go anywhere, pay any amount to see Moby
play with U2. Individually, I can resist driving to St Louis or Dallas. But
collectively, I would be compelled to go. I don't know why this bill didn't
happen. I think I would still kill to see it.

Now seeing U2 and Moby play at the same venue would be the
ultimate - I totally agree, especially if U2 mainly played
their old late 70s and 80s stuff.

Interesting discovery:
The edit of Voodoo Child on Early Underground, which is credited to
the remix 12", is actually an edit of the Brainstorm mix. (This is the one
with "Come on everybody let's all get down!") You'd think that since they
said naught about this on EU that the edit would be of the Original Mix.
Well, it's not. The original mix has that ambient riff used in slight
return,(during long breakdowns) without the layers and pitch variations.
"Voodoo Child (Original Mix)" can just as effectively be titled "Voodoo
Child (Slight Return)"
No Buttons To Push is a short thing at just over a minute, a nifty
bass groove w/ lots of samples of what I beleive is Hendrix's voice.
Certainly sounds like him saying "No buttons to push" He says other stuff
too, but I can't recall what offhand.
Oh, and it was criminal of Instinct to edit any of these mixes. The
endings are great.

Have you listened to BT+Tori Amos "Blue Skies" ?
How do you think, guys and gals, BT and Moby music can be compared ? I
admin that I've only listened to "Blue Skies" (and several of its remixes),
but BT sounded quite different than Moby... :-?

Moby's nickname.

I knew his name, too, don't forget me. I answered yesterday.
I agree that BT & Moby are quite different. They both are good at
communicating feeling to the listener, but in style and structure the
differences become apparent. While I can't really describe Moby's sound
well, I would use descriptions like tight, focused, introspective. With BT
I'd say dreamy, epic, even groovy sometimes. Even so, these words don't do
justice to the differences. I think the reason people say they sound alike
is because many people react to their music almost the same way. Both have
emotional power, and both can transport you to a place you never knew
existed.
I'd like to help with a faq, but my company has been bought and the new
policy is no personal stuff on work computers. I'll have to quit this list
soon until I get my own computer. I can't even sign up for a Yahoo address
from here, the corporate gods can read every keystroke of mine, and soon
they will be. Right now they're looking for offenders within the company of
having material of bad taste on their hard drives. Once they finish w/ that
they'll come looking for people w/ games on their computers. Then, finally
they'll go for the e-mail culprits like myself. If you do make a faq I'll
edit it, or make sure the english is good, ya know? (bad english in a
sentence about good enlish, hey now)
I quite agree on the Moby/U2 thing. Motley Crue was my favorite when I was
in elementary school, U2 was my favorite for junior high and the first two
years of high school, and Moby has been my favorite during the dropout years
and present.

I think that BT's greatest song that I have heard is Blue Skies, but that is
not where I find the comparison. His first Album, IMA (which means "now" in
Japanese incase anyone ever wondered why there was a chinese writing on the
cover) was a 2 disc and the second disc is 4 tracks, 2 Blue Skies, a great 40
min track and something else. The first CD is regular BT, and it is really
good - danceable like Blue Skies if I remember correctly. However, where I
find the comparison is his second Album, ESCM (which I still am wondering what
it stands for). The mix of songs reminded me of EIW, especially when track 6
came around which is kind of like one of those hard Moby songs or a NIN song.
Robert Miles comes to mind when I think of Remember, the most popular track,
but Moby comes back with Love, Peace, and Greace, the most acclaimed track.
Again, I hate reviewing music, but if that made sense, I hope it helped.
Later.

blue skies is beautiful but i'm generally not into BT's brand of techno.
it's lacking something to me. the remixes for her song raspberry swirl are
gorgeous, the scarlet spectrum feels mix reminds me of moby's ambient stuff
(choir and all) .

No, actually it was Compaq.
Let's start w/ this rough outline. I encourage all list members to send
ideas. Jonathan, are you getting us started? With all the changes
suggestions etc. the list would get clogged w/ lots of repetive nonsense.
Basically I think we should start by collecting ideas then the actual
process of writing and editing should be done via private e-mail.
1.Moby's biography
1.1 Born & raised
1.2 Punk bands
1.3 Moby w/ Flipper & Ulta Vivid Scene (we need info here!)
1.4 Moby's residences (was there a meat packing factory or something?)
1.5 Moby vs. Instinct
2.Moby's theology, essays, beleifs, etc.
3.Moby's releases (link to the discography, perhaps?)
4.Controversy (EIW genre-straddle, AR no dance period, etc.)
This one might belong under number 1.
5.Assorted info (the possible GNR producer role, the car ad for charity)
6.Moby on the web (link to the Directory page?)
All right, if anyone has something to offer, now is the time. Particularly
something that isn't obvious. I'm sure everyone on this list will appreciate
it if nobody replies frivolously. If you're serious about contributing, take
the time & effort to review what we've got, what we're missing, what we need
to improve, etc. What I'm saying is don't bother to toss out one-liner
messages that will clog the list. If people feel that we're already posting
too much about this project to the list, please let us know and we'll move
it to 1 on 1 e-mail.
Jonathan, this could be quite a large project. Are you sure you want to move
forward with this?

I'm too busy to maintain it myself, but I'd be more than willing to
host it on my website, and to handle any HTML conversions if you want
it in HTML (as opposed to plain text).
Mike Brown used to maintain a Moby FAQ, before I was even on the web.
Actually, it was the Moby FAQ and Discography. I didn't know of its
existence when I became interested in the WWW in early 1995, and my
searches didn't find it. So I started my Moby page and discography,
and several months later learned that there was a Moby page before
mine (way before mine) and also a discography.
The last version of Mike's Moby discography is at
http://www.moby.org/info/mobydsc4.txt
It does not include the FAQ (though it has a little bit of stuff
near the beginning that might be usable in a FAQ). Somewhere I also
have an older document that is the Moby FAQ + discography, but it's
not online at the moment. I have it on a disk somewhere, and I'll
try to look it up. I think it could serve as an excellent source of
info and guidance in getting started. Maybe all that needs to be
done is a really major update to this already-existing document.

Aha.. It seems a good practice. We'll have and unofficial (or beta) FAQ
till it gets something fairly complete.
I wonder if we could get something out of that interview one of the
Mobydicts (and his girlfriend) made to Moby.

Any other UNIX guy 'round here ?

You can bet. In a week, my exams will be over, and I'll got plenty of time
(well, more or less, but I spend a lot of time online) to modify and add
things to the FAQ. As for the design, I guess it could be written in some
portable format, and then render it to HTML/ascii, so it can be distributed
easily by HTTP/email.

I think it is a great idea for the FAQ, but it is a huge job. I would love to
help, but I am leaving for Japan in 2 weeks. Anyway, one thing I would love to
see on the Faq that you left out is a whole list of Abbreviations. Even now,
after 6 months on this list, I still can't figure out half of them, especially
that more obscure or long ones. GMOTFOTW or WICILTD or ATIWIBL always kill me,
and those are the ones I can remember. A nice list I and others could print
out and paste up right next to the computer. That would really be awesome. I
don't think you need to add ones like IMHO or FYI, stuff that is not Moby, but
it would help too. Anyway, good luck with this project. If it gets done it
would be awesome. Later.

So, if anyone reads this and wants to make a MOBY FAQ, I have interrest.

I don't think anyone could really compare the two, since their
styles vary so much. Both of them are really varied musicians. 'Ima' is
easily one of the best albums I've got, although ESCM didn't impress me
that much (even though "Flaming June" is one of my favorite songs); it
sounded different than 'Ima'. "Blue Skies" is a good song, but I much
prefer the Delphinium Days Mix. Still, though, a song with both
contributing would be awesome, or maybe even a whole album or e.p.
P.S.: They've both remixed each other, haven't they?
As always,
