Totally. Little Idiot is a fantastic disc, but it should be taken in as a
whole-I never realized how fantastic both discs were until I got the UK
version. Now the US one feels a bit like a compilation...

Thanks for posting this info, Steve. I'd just like to make some
comments on these records...
> Moby - Bring Back My Happiness - (Mute) 1995
Includes the Voodoo Child Mix of BBMH, which was not released on the
US single. This mix is nice (albeit short at 4:13), and sounds like
a cross between BBMH and "Feeling So Real".
> Moby - That's When I Reach for My Revolver - (Mute) 1996
This includes the Rollo & Sister Bliss Instrumental Mix, available
only on this 12". It's pretty similar to the R&SB Vocal Mix on the
remix CD, but is not just that mix without the lyrics.
> Moby - I Feel It/Thousand - (Mute) 1993
I'm not sure which record this is, but it would be nice to own in
any case.
> Moby - Move the E.p. Move You Make Me Feel So Good/ Morning Dove/ All That I

This record is worth getting because the version of ATINITBL on it
is the one later called the "Hard Trance Version" on the EIW double
remix CD. A very fine track indeed!
BTW, has anyone listened to the "Honey" excerpt that I posted on my
website earlier today?

I bought Disk last night for $11.99 at Best Buy. I wasn't even there to
look at CDs, but thought I'd browse by and see if there was anything
worthwhile. Lo and behold, there it was. I only had $12.06 on me and so
with tax I would have been just a tad shy, but luckily I had my checkbook
w/ me.
Like most other people, I had infinite problems getting it to work. It
would see the audio but not the video, then it would see the video but not
the audio. I finally reached some sort of compromise--I think. How do you
get to those videos again through the app? It seemed like It would show
one frame from the video and then the bouncing objects would appear on the
screen. It was pretty frustrating. I managed to get to the remix area,
the techno history, and stuff like that. But anyway, I just browed the CD
and ran the videos individually.
I really like the "This is my dream" mix of Hymn. It's so unlike all the
other versions of Hymn that I've heard. I find that interestingly odd.
Shining is also pretty good, but I don't think I'm immensely impressed.
Maybe it'll grow on me more.
I like the videos too. I've only seen parts of Moby videos before so it's
nice to own some now.
Speaking of which--Ryan, where are those videos? You never replied to my
email message.
My overall impression of Disk? I was pretty frustrated by the
technilogical errors and those floating heads got annoying after a while.
But I think it's got some great vidoes and music. Definate Moby
collectibles for a good fan.
Peace out.

I'm sorry if it's a little confusing, but I originally started that for my
own use and I used some conventions that others might not understand.
It's quite possible for a song to be 0 bpm. I believe Moby's "Grace" would
be a good example. The songs listed at 1 bpm are generally ambient pieces
or just pieces I couldn't clock for one reason or another. If I don't have
some sort of percussion to go by, I have a difficult time finding the bpm.
I set them to 1 bpm because the BPM database program didn't seem to like
that value being set to nothing. Similarly, Moby's "Thousand" is set to
999 bpm instead of 1000.
If you can tell me what the bpm of those songs should be, please tell me.

Hmm...
It's really not what I would have expected. I'm not talking about the genre
jumping either-it sounds a little bit like he's taking a stab at "big beat"
(whatever that is). I certainly hope not, and I could be wrong (after a 22
second clip). I was glad to hear a familiar Moby bassline, and if the song
continues to progress along the same lines then I'm sure it'll be tops. I'm
just a bit scared of Moby turning into the Mighty Fatboy Dub Pizzaman,
churning out crap songs based on a slightly catchy riff.
*BUT I DID LIKE IT* ;)

a Spacemen 3 cover...

I don't think Moby is trying to copy anyone, though there does seem to
be a hint of Fatboy Slim's funky mixture of folk/country with hip-hop/
electronic. This sample of "Honey" is fairly representative of the
entire song, and was taken from a little past the middle.
The "B-sides" are totally different from "Honey". They're more akin to
"Shining" and "First Cool Hive". I keep listening to "Memory Gospel"
over and over, because I dig Moby's subdued instrumental tracks, and
love it when the strings kick in.
Keep in mind that this is only a single. Who knows what his next album
will sound like? Personally, I don't think it will be an hour of
"Honey"-ish tracks. This single just helps to keep us going in this
long interim period before the album comes out. I hope Moby will manage
to get out another single (and in the US, too!) before February.
> *BUT I DID LIKE IT* ;)
So do I. It's not the most fantastic thing he's ever done, but it's
nice and catchy and with all its remixes, it is probably his best single
since "Into The Blue".

I'm glad he's gone back to B-sides. For some reason the JBT single was
really uninteresting to me. I'll have to get it eventually but there's not
much drive for me to hurry...Memory Gospel sounds good-as long as it's not
another Graciosa I'll be happy...;)

Really?
The Everytime You Touch Me singles weren't as good as Into The Blue (imo),
and Come On Baby certainly wasn't-but I *love* the orange Revolver. It's
possibly my favorite Moby disc...
I'm looking forward to it-serious praise from Mr. Cerman pulls weight with
me...

Hmmm... Graciosa is one track that I don't have (yet). I only heard
it once, in RealAudio, a long time ago.
> The Everytime You Touch Me singles weren't as good as Into The Blue (imo),

Well, the Revolver single + remix + B-sides is actually comparable to
Honey in how good it is. With Revolver, disc 1 was 4 tracks, but only
two were "real" songs (and they were good). With Honey, you get 3 songs
on the first disc. So they're more or less equivalent. Disc 2 of
Revolver was great. Disc 2 of Honey is good (and also has 4 tracks).
The Rollo & Sister Bliss Blunt Edit and Aphrodite & Mickey Finn mixes
are very nice. The jury is still out on the other 2 remixes, which are
okay, but did not make such a big impression on me. In net excellence,
Revolver beats Honey on disc 2. If this were all there was, then
Revolver would edge ahead of Honey a little bit.
But there's more! Where were Revolver's remixes? There was only the
Rollo & Sister Bliss Vocal Mix, and a similar nonvocal version of that
mix on vinyl. A good mix it was, but to me it's crazy having a Moby
single that's so starved for remixes. Finally, in the following year,
an Australian Revolver single was released with a nice Moby mix and
edit, and an additional remix. That was nice, albeit overdue.
But Honey has more remixes, and it has them now. The Honey 12" has 3
tracks that aren't on the CD. Rollo & Sister Bliss have done it again,
producing another fine remix for Moby. Sharam Jey's Sweet Honey Mix is
indeed a blissful trip, and justifies the purchase of the 12". Moby's
Low Side Mix is more cold and minimal, but that's okay with me because
I like obscure Moby tracks that are dark and have tension in them. What
can I say? One of my favorite Moby singles is "Hymn", and though its
European Edit and alt.quiet.version are wonderful crowning achievements,
I love the other remixes that hid in the shadows of promo 12"s and out
of print German CD singles. Anyways, in my opinion, the Honey 12" has
clearly more bang for the buck than the Revolver 12".
So who's keeping score? IMHO:
Revolver Honey
UK CD 1 tie tie
UK CD 2 w l
UK 12" l w
OZ CD w n/a
promos l W :)
Unfortunately, there are some fine remixes that are not going to be
easy for you to get, because as far as I know, they are promo only.
RJ's Mix and Bammer's Mix are good drum & bass remixes that rival and
maybe surpass Mickey Finn's mix. These are on UK CD and 12" promos.
Then there are two more Moby mixes on a 12" promo. They're aren't
awesome or mind-blowing or anything, but I'm glad that I'm fortunate
enough to have them. The Risk Mix is kind of a goofy boom-tiss dance
track that is happy and synthy. The Dark Mix is also boom-tiss (not
a bad thing), but it's fast and cool. CJ Bolland's Dubbel Oh Heaven
Remix of the James Bond Theme comes to mind as a comparison. I'm
glad that Moby has gone back to making more remixes of his own tracks,
and I'd love to own them all on CD.
It is my hope that Germany and/or the USA and/or Australia will put
out their own unique Honey singles and include these tracks. Maybe
that's what they're being saved for. And I guess DJs enjoy having
tracks that aren't readily available to the public. These mixes are
certainly DJ-friendly. So with all things considered, I say that
Honey beats Revolver.
OK, I'll shut up now and let someone else speak. ;)

It was done by Phillip something. Steir, I think. I really shouldn't
remember that, but I do. I hope you aren't dissing the US Revolver 12",
anybody. I love that thing. It was my first record! Personally, I don't care
for the VE-GUN mix, but Revolver just doesn't work chopped up and blended
into an industrial song. For me.
I got that record before I had tables so wherever there was a record player
I could listen to the R&S Vocal mix, which my buddy had on Revolver #2. He
got me into Moby. My interest gained momentum very slowly, and I didn't
realize how much I liked Moby until I stopped being friends w/ this guy and
didn't have various brands of techno shoved down my throat anymore. I saw
the self-titled CD while searching for Revolver #2, and I'd never seen it
before. It had originals of the Rare songs which I liked. (mobility aqua was
the first song I REALLY liked) so I got it. The original of Drop A Beat &
Have You Seen My Baby sounded new and wonderful to my ears. That's where it
started for me.

Actually, blunt is not a word I would use to describe it at all. It's
like the second happiest remix (Sharam Jey's being the winner of that
contest). In fact, it sounds a lot like their Revolver remix, but with
sadness and desperateness replaced by some kind of halcyonic contentment.
It has that same "dooo doo -- doo dooo doo -- doo dooo doo" [for lack of
a better textual way to express sound] bassline, and more semi-distant-
sounding female wailing: "hoooohhhhhhhowowow". ;) And of course it's
shorter. The full version of the remix builds longer and sounds darker,
overall. So the "blunt edit" is really like a concentrated formula for
the big mix, rather than merely a shortened version. Does that make
sense?

I don't think so. As far as I know, the Flea remix was unreleased.

Heheh. But that's just MHO. And as with all other music, the degree
to which I like it depends on my mood at the time.

According to Moby, both of the mixes rumored to have been completed for
Revolver by Flea and Billy Corgan were submitted to Elektra and subsequently
never released. The lack of marketing for that single (including the
non-pressing of celebrity remixes for even a promo) was a large factor in
Moby's decision to find another partner to distribute his music in the US.
However. the better of the two remixes Moby did for Smashing Pumpkins "1979"
he kept for himself and might find life as a track on his new album next
spring (with the SP samples removed, of course).
