Does anybody else have specific Moby tracks that move them? I mean *really*
move you, like virtually to tears. I know personally I can't listen to When
It's Cold I'd Like To Die, Love Song For My Mom, or especially Living

From what I understand when they play live, they do an extended mix of
Halcyon that ends with Bon Jovi & Belinda Carlisle. I'm totally serious;
it's on one of the UK imports of Insides I believe (the 2cd without the
28min Box & without the Saint I believe.)....

Subject: Re: (mobility) Why I joined this list...
Recently, I heard Madonna's new single, "Frozen". Obviously, this was
her
attempt at taking a stab into the electronic music realm. The song was
punctuated with various synth bits, various percussive sounds run
through
filters and delay, and a chorus consisting of a jungle-type break. The
song
itself wasn't that bad; IMHO, it was a better attempt at techno than
Bush's
"Mouth", which was a huge chart hit. The point I want to make is this;
how
do members of this list, some of you being fans of electronic music for
the
7-year duration of Moby's career so far and some even longer than that,
feel
about pop stars trying to make techno-ish songs? Is it proliferating the
genre, smattering it with a bad name, or do you feel that these artists
are
making a genuine attempt at writing better songs by adding electronic
flavoring to their music?
How do you feel about this music becoming chart-topping mainstream hit
fare?
Do you want it to stay underground? I'm curious...
Personally, I don't care if it's mainstream...just as long as they do it
right.
>Peace,
>Brian
I just want to say that I agree. I could care less what is "mainstream"
and what isn't. If something sounds good and makes me want to move -
that's all I care about. I see nothing wrong with a pop artist trying
to expand on their musical knowledge and talents. And I would like to
hear more "underground" on the radio.
But, on the other hand, I don't really like to go to clubs that are
packed with people that only know "mainstream". I feel that they really
don't appreciate the music - they might just be into what's "cool" at
the time. I think they are the ones who give it a bad name.

yes.. i saw them last summer.. they do indeed play this, and it is DAMN
funny !! i wasn't familiar w/ the somg at the time and neither were most
of the people around me.. jsut before they started on the "shot through
the heart, and you're to blame.." thing, they both started laughing..
then when they did it, the crowd went insane. . .it was excellent

As for all this philosophy talk, alls I gots ta say is I'm Jewish, not
Vegan, and I walk or ride a bike.
My copy of Insides which I bought in 96 doesnt have the live Halcyon,
but I saw the vid of it on AMP (where they dubbed it "Live
Experience"). Yes, what is up with Bon Jovi and Belinda Carlisle?
Maybe they've been watching 8-track flashback or something...I don't
have any other Orbital cds though.
I think Halcyon is a very powerful song. I don't have Animal Rights,
so I don't know about those songs.
Yeah, Aphex remixing, he must really reconstruct the track. I've never
heard his remixes, but I've heard that they are "so utterly obliterate
of the originals that it counts as all new Aphex.". (Spin guide to
Alternative Music 1995)The thing about remixing is some remixers just
basically add a disco beat to the song, some add a whole new element
to the song, and some just make a new song and pass it off as a remix.
I mean, when Van Helden does a remix, he just makes a disco version of
the song(which most of the time is pretty bad, IMO). But like on the
Bjork remix cd, most of the songs add whole new elements to the
originals Like the classical version of Hyperballad (her best song,
IMO, and one of her most emotional...track 2 on her cds are usually
the most emotional ones on the disc) and the rap version of I Miss
You. The remixes are the best when they do this.
But some just make a whole new song, like the Masseymix of Army Of Me,
which takes away the vocals. Or the Goldie mix of Bush's Swallowed. Or
the Chembros mix of Prodigy's Voodoo People. I mean, all these mixes,
the song is good, but they just ruin the song. (well, except the bush
remix, i like that one more than the original) This can be good and
bad. If AFX did a remix of Moby, it would be cool if he added an
element to the song. But I guess it would just sound like new AFX.
Which is good, because AFX ROCKS, but it wouldn't really be Moby,
which is the point.
Bla Bla Bla yackety schmackety...g'bye Mobilitians

Yeah, I taped this off the radio a while ago; towards they end, they mix in
Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name" and Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven is a
Place on Earth". It really has to be heard to be believed :)

If music groups want to "dabble" in other genre's..that's fine with me..It
might turn out great in some cases(Did Moby not turn "techno"? If I have my
history correct..he was pure punk in his early early days).
>Is it proliferating the
>genre, smattering it with a bad name, or do you feel that these artists are

I think it depends on the group and why they're doing it. I'll have less
respect for a group who's doing just because it's the "hip" thing at the
moment. It doesn't surprise me about Madonna's direction..It seems like
it's the only natural progression.
>How do you feel about this music becoming chart-topping mainstream hit fare?
>Do you want it to stay underground? I'm curious...
This will always be debated..it'd be nice if Moby would become more
mainstream..Then maybe I'd be able to see him live..maybe Mute would start
releasing stuff domestically and I could stop paying import prices..But it's
nice when it's underground..it's yours..and only a select few ppl know about
it..Now I don't have a elitest(sp?) attitude..but for example..I was at the
Sno-Core Tour Sunday night..in between bands they were playing South Park
episodes..A few of us knew the show really well(The two local cable
companies don't carry Comedy Central...I only get it because I subscribe to
one of the minidishes)..So we were saying the lines along w/ the show..A lot
of ppl looked at us strange..It was a great feeling :).
I don't see all of "electronic" music becoming mainstream in the U.S. A
majority of ppl in the U.S. need their bands on
stage..singing..dancing..etc..not behind machines(IMHO..this is why bands
like The Prodigy took off). I think the music industry saw that
electronica(as they call it..horf) wasn't the next "grunge"..so they're
gonna move on.
>Personally, I don't care if it's mainstream...just as long as they do it right.
I'm gonna try to stop this debate right here..Let's not start debating
what's the right way to do electronic music..We all know what we like/don't
like..That's all that's needed :)

Ok, about the Orbital live Halcyon. ( I am sorry this is off topic ) They do mix
in those two songs, and personally ,I think that it is one of the coolest
things I have ever heard from my stereo. Taking their song - Halcyon (which is
an awesome song as it is) and adding two random 80s songs that flow so
perfectly. I have never heard of such a thing, but it is amazing. I would love
to see some more music like that, even by Moby, because I am sure that I have
heard too many Moby songs with the same beat and (fill in music term) before.
And by the way, someone said about The prodigy taking off because they aren't
behind machines. I don't disagree with that, but it was "Prodigy" that took
off. Liam left behind "The Prodigy" with Jilted Generation. I am so pissed of
with that, and I just felt had to say something. Later.
