i agree that too much discussion of off-topic stuff has been going on
here...
I would like to suggest that it is perfectly reasonable for something
off
topic to ARISE from something relevant to Moby. However, if someone
wishes to continue discussion, why can't they just write to the other
people who mention it as well? I understand that a few messages must
come
up on the list first, but once it is understood that a large number of
the
readers are fed up with the topic, please be kind and discuss it outside
the confines of the list. Puffy and MTV would be perfect examples of
something to try this with.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and i hope it helps.

Fil,
* Hello*, I was excited to hear that you too, got the chance to see Moby in
Minnesota. I also was fortunate enough to head on down to "Fist Ave.", and see
him and Juno Reactor perform. I am from the Twin Cities, and I am a senior in
highschool here. I love MOby, and a lot of other artists (including the one
formerly known as Prince.) Other than listening to music, and going to
concerts, I keep busy with school, and just hanging out. There is not a lot to
do in the Twin Cities at this time of year (as you may already know), so fun
is limited. Hmmm.. on Chicago; I actually thought about going to Loyola next
year, but my dad is determined to not have me go to college in an urban
setting, I guess.... anyaways... e-mail me back and tell me what you thought
of the concert and MN in general... if you want...

Hello everyone. I have a offer for the list. Everyone is talking about MP3
this and MP3 that. Well, I decided to start a MP3 mailing list. Every week a
new MP3 will arrive in your mailbox!!! The MP3 will be mailed every Thurs.
This Thurs. will be Moby's version of Soundgarden's Dusty. To Subscribe all
you have to do is email me at JadenX@aol.com and tell me that you want in on
the list. Coming up in the next couple of weeks:
Aerosmith's "Falling In Love Is Hard In The Knees"
Blur's "Beetlebum"
Metallica's "Until It Sleeps"
ALL mixed by Moby.
After a couple of weeks I'll take requests for Moby stuff. I have almost
every song he has so there should be now problem in me finding any song.
Remember, you have 24 hours to delete the MP3 once you get it. I hope this
service will make everyone :) (smile) :)

Hmm...
Ok-this is probably going to put me in several people's bad books but what
the hell...
I'll start by taking a look at some of my favorite artists:
nine inch nails, Moby, Spiritualized, DJ Shadow, Psychic TV, Coil & Death In
Vegas
All of them (IMHO) are extremely talented musicians/producers etc. and they
all seem to take great effort in over & under producing their music to
acheive certain effects. Anyone who's gotten stoned and listened to Floyd
knows that one can realize a lot about what goes into a song in the right
frame of mind.
Last week I decided to give Moby a shot after indulging. I listened to two
cd's I'd compiled myself consisting of early Instinct material up to the
latest rock & Trophy stuff. I've got to say that it really left me cold.
I'd expected *so* much more, because as I'm sure we all do I love Moby's
work. Obviously band's like Spiritualized, Mercury Rev & DJ Shadow tailor
their work a little bit more to the drug crowd. But people like nine inch
nails have such superlative 'finishing-touch' talent I'd hoped that Moby
would too.
Don't get me wrong, I still consider Moby to be possibly the most talented
single man in the industry; I just figured that someone who writes such
emotionally evocative (and sometimes draining) music would produce a more
textured product.
Unless anyone knows different I'll assume it's due to his lack of interest
in the drug scene.
Anyway, I'd love to hear thoughts/rants/tirades/agreements etc. on this.
(and please, I don't want *1* person telling me that Puffy makes good drug
music ;)

I agree with puffy. Since the first time I heard him ("Can't Nobody Hold Me
Down") I thought he totally sucked. Mase sucks too. The only good artist on
that label is B.I.G. who at least had some talent and originality. Personally
rap wise I have the most respect for the Wu-Tang Clan. Rza is basically the
moby of hip-hop original, groundbreaking, and innovative.
But I like that ska-cover. It's by Save Ferris and that's a pretty cool album.

Nahh..I doubt it...Who's to say what and what isn't a "drug". As
Consolidated put it in "Stoned": America you know you're so stoned. Stoned
on television, music, and print. Stoned on alcohol, religion, and drugs.
Terms like freedom and democracy. Stoned on violence and a war economy.
Stoned on a nation's addiction to meat. Stoned on a nation's addiction to
oil. America is based out of it's mind."
>Unless anyone knows different I'll assume it's due to his lack of interest

Well..I'm going to assume he does have a lack of interest..I'll quote from
the liner notes from Next Is The E(Instinct): Upon hearing "Next Is The E",
many people make the assumption that this song is about drug use. The truth
is that I disapprove of the irresponsible use of drugs. I've seen far too
many lives damaged from drug use to even consider glorifying drugs in a
song. - Moby.
Now what he considers irresponsible use..I don't know..but it'd seem to me
that he'd be against making his beats tailor made for drug use.

this is an interesting subject!
i'd say that the reason that moby's music doesn't sound as inspiring under
the influence is because of the artists you mentioned above, he's the least
likely to record music while on drugs.
i KNOW that spriritualized, shadow, ptv, and coil are large supporters of
substances in general,,,and i'd be willing to bet that reznor and death in
vegas are supporters as well.
but moby is not really into drugs too much, and i'd be willing to bet that
he records with a chemically free mind. his music probably sounds
dry when you're not.
any other ideas here?
