You folks kill me!!!!!!!
hahahahahaahahaaaa
Puffy is an artist whether you realize it or not.
Speaking from a DJ's point of view in a club where I don't go a night
without playing at least 2 Puffy songs, and getting requests for 14 more.
Puffy takes songs, 80's hit songs and inserts them in (SOME) of his dance
songs. Making them accessible again for a new generation to enjoy. Say for
example, Matthew Wilder's "Break My Stride", find me one DJ in America or
abroad that played that song in his nightclub regularly unless he was
clearing his club out for a reason. The fidelity is terrible, there is NO
bass to speak of, and the fluff lyrics around the hook are just that FLUFF.
Puffy comes along and take s a recognizable hook and re-sings it in his
song. Do the kids care it was a crap pop song to start with? No, I lower the
volume on that part and they sing it at the top of their lungs on the dance
floor.
Speaking as a remixer and (hopefully) one day producer, it is not as easy as
you think to come up with lyrics that people will groove to around a sample
based song
Speaking as an assistant music director at a radio station, there are
Hundreds of songs a month that try to do exactly what Puffy does for his hit
songs. but they don't hit the mark. They don't get on the air, they don't
get call backs on the request line. They just sit at the bottom of our CHIT
box collecting dust.
Finally.... Listen to Puffy's WHOLE CD, not just the overplayed over
discussed(grin) and over criticized hit songs, there ARE other songs on
there that don't contain samples of old songs, there are positive songs,
there are love songs, there are energy building songs and (unfortunately)
there are some gangster rap songs.
So before you jump on the bandwagon dissing an artist of talent that maybe
you don't understand or appreciate, think again.
Peace

Nah..puffy sucks. Just because someone sells well or appeals
to commercial listeners doesn't mean he's an artist. Puffy and his
friends are a disgrace to hip hop. If you want rap, listen to Gang
Starr, Common, or Mobb Deep. they kick ass.

Since I satrted this mess i'd like to make my final say. As music goes, hip-
hop culture has been on the downside for the last few years. The violence and
racism it portrays, the people who listen to it, the attitude created by it,
and the lack of universal understanding is all part of what is wrong with it.
Puffy decided to take some 80's classics and turn them into 90's hits with a
new flair. He wanted to do something that would make me, the non rap listener
sit back and appreciate it. I'm an 80's DJ here in Santa Cruz and i play the
Police and David Bowie on a regular basis. Not everyone these days has heard
"Lets Dance" by David Bowie. Puffy not only took it upon himself to revive a
classic tune, but started to bridge the gap between people who listen to rap,
and people who don't. When I found myself sitting at Blockbuster Music
listening to his CD I realized that alot of my anti-rap feeling were being
thrown out the window. This man has talent. He owns his own record label that
he started. He makes music that he wants people to like. He wants to make
money. And he is succeeding. I could see if he was outright stealing the songs,
but he is paying for the rights. He does what Moby does, he does what makes
him happy, he does what makes his fans happy, and he tries to survive in this
world of music that is so bent on Top 40 crap like Hanson and The Spice Girls
that its a wonder we've ever heard of Moby. All i'm trying to say is he took a
new take on some great 80's songs and did it right. Hell, even Vanilla Ice and
MC Hammer each had 1 good 80's sampled song. We all have to be a little more
open minded. We all need to be good people. We all have to realize we all
can't agree. But wouldn't it be nice if we could.

You have a point BUT, I think there is a big difference between doing a
cover song here and there and making a whole cd or the majarity of your
work remakes.
I think Puff Daddy's music is fun but I also think he gets WAY more
credit than he deserves.

OH but there is :) I'm assuming you think Moby has less talent w/
Animal
Rights considering he redid(remade?) Revolver. Now while I haven't
heard
the original..I think Revolver is a great song. Just because a
person/group
covers a song..doesn't mean they're any less talented. Some examples?
RevCo's version of Do You Think I'm Sexy..See the Virus 100 cd from
Alternative Tentacles..groups like Nomeansno, Faith No More, L7,
Sepultra,
Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, and others recording their takes on
Dead
Kennedy songs...Then there's the Shut Up Kitty comp from
Re-Constriction/Cargo Records...Your favorite "industrial" bands doing
their
takes on popular songs..KMFDM doing U2's Mysterious Ways, D.D.T doing
Madonna's Vogue(imho..they do it better), A-Politiq doing PE's She Watch
Channel Zero?!, Fleshhouse doing the Beach Boys' Good Vibrations, and
many
more...Last(but certainly not least) is Covered In Black from
Cleopatra...It's an industrial tribute to AC/DC..Die Krupps does It's A
Long
Way To The Top...Pigface vs. Sheep On Drugs does a VERY interesting take
on
Back In Black..Sister Machine Gun does TNT(Chris is known to do a cover
at
every live show..)..and 16 Volt does Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheep.
As you can see..this is a very talented list of artists..are they less
talented cuz they covered a song? I guess that's up to you to decide :)

That's the point. Moby tries to seperate his ideals and his music as much as
he can. Rather than get labeled as some ultra-PC nutcase and alienating
possible fans, he writes either jovial pop/dance songs or
guitar-and-drum-machine-driven angst rock. His essays let him express
himself on a political level, while the music is a medium for his emotional
output.
