this reviewer is an idiot.
moby and james just can't be compared. they are both too distinct.
and as far as voices go, as much as i love moby, i'll take james' anyday.
i like humor in music.
>When he sings Mission Of Burma's "That's When I

why the hell is it that everytime someone reviews AR, they have to bring up
this song? i find it to be THE weakest track on the album, and just because
it's a cover, people make a big deal of it. there is more to AR than
"revolver".
>BTW...he gave it 3.5 stars out of 5...
if a reviewer says nothing but good stuff about an album, then it deserves 5
stars.
this guy gives it 3.5, but never says where the other 1.5 stars went to!
sorry to be negative, but i'm just a bit pissed right now.

I thought I'd let the list know about some mag articles Moby's in this
month:
Rolling Stone(U2 on cover): Small blurb about him..somewhat
insignificant ?'s(thanks to Keri for telling me)
Alternative Press(L7 on cover): Writer discusses religon and the
industry w/ Moby, MXPX, and others. Also, there is an article overview
of electonic music..Moby isn't in it..but his self titled album was
like #9 in a top 10 list of must haves(or hears) of certain genres of
elec. music.
Seconds(Bjork on cover): Just another AR review..very favorable though
:)
That's all for now :)

Hi Mobysters, I am a fan of Moby and an Electronic Music Performance
Artist. I am considering sending music to Moby at Trophy.
I bought AR/Little Idiot and it was an inspiration to see the blending
of rock music and electronic music served in a single package.
I got it because of "Revolver" because it is such a raw track and I
recently learned it was a cover (thanks folks). It is a cool cover I
would like to hear the original.
Bottom line. The whole two disk set is a unique combination of sounds in
both dynamics and extremes.

really cool music festival called endfest '97, in cleveland (where i am

me to introduce myself. well this is my introduction.
my moby collection is animal rights. i first heard him on the schoolhouse
rocks compilation, but i had heard of him a couple years before that. i
have just ordered a mission of burma album, because my cousin said it's a

Sometimes when I read something about Moby, it says something like
that he was an 'electronic music pioneer' or that he 'defined the techno
sound'. What exactly has Moby's influence been? What artists has he
directly influenced? How would the history of techno music be different
if Moby had not been involved in it?

**********************
* A LOVE STORY *
**********************
One day, I woke early in the morning to watch the sunrise.
Ah the beauty of God's creation is beyond description.
As I watched, I praised God for His beautiful work.
As I sat there, I felt the Lord's presence with me.
He asked me,
"Do you love me?"
I answered,
"Of course, God! You are my Lord and Saviour!"
*******************************************
Then He asked,
"If you were physically handicapped, would you still love me?"
I was perplexed. I looked down upon my arms, legs and the rest of my
body
and wondered how many things I wouldn't; be able to do, the things that
I
took for granted.
And I answered, "It would be tough Lord, but I would still love You."
*******************************************
Then the Lord said,
"If you were blind, would you still love my creation?"
How could I love something without being able to see it?
Then I thought of all the blind people in the world and how many of them
still loved God and His creation.
So I answered, "Its hard to think of it, but I would still love you."
*******************************************
The Lord then asked me,
"If you were deaf, would you still listen to my word?"
How could I listen to anything being deaf?
Then I understood. Listening to God's Word is not merely using our
ears,
but our hearts.
I answered, "It would be tough, but I would still listen to Your word."
*******************************************
The Lord then asked, "If you were mute, would you still praise My Name?"
How could I praise without a voice?
Then it occurred to me: God wants us to sing from our very heart and
soul.
It never matters what we sound like. And praising God is not always
with
a song, but when we are persecuted, we give God praise with our words of
thanks.
So I answered, "Though I could not physically sing, I would still praise
Your Name.
*******************************************
And the Lord asked, "Do you really love Me?"
With courage and a strong conviction, I answered boldly, "Yes Lord! I
love
You because You are the one and true God!"
I thought I had answered well, but God asked, "THEN WHY DO YOU SIN?"
I answered, "Because I am only human. I am not perfect."
"THEN WHY IN TIMES OF PEACE DO YOU STRAY THE FURTHEST? WHY ONLY IN TIMES
OF TROUBLE DO YOU PRAY THE EARNEST?"
No answers. Only tears.
The Lord continued: "Why only sing at fellowships and retreats? Why seek
Me only in times of worship? Why ask things so selfishly? Why ask
things
so unfaithfully?"
The tears continued to roll down my cheeks.
"Why are you ashamed of Me? Why are you not spreading the good news? Why
in times of persecution, you cry to others when I offer My shoulder to
cry
on? Why make excuses when I give you opportunities to serve in My Name?"
I tried to answer, but there was no answer to give.
"You are blessed with life. I made you not to throw this gift away. I
have
blessed you with talents to serve Me, but you continue to turn away. I
have revealed My Word to you, but you do not gain in knowledge. I have
spoken to you but your ears were closed. I have shown My blessings to
you,
but your eyes were turned away. I have sent you servants, but you sat
idly
by as they were pushed away. I have heard your prayers and I have
answered
them all."
"DO YOU TRULY LOVE ME ?"
I could not answer. How could I? I was embarrassed beyond belief. I had
no
excuse. What could I say to this? When I my heart had cried out and the
tears had flowed, I said, Please forgive me Lord. I am unworthy to be
Your
child."
The Lord answered, " That is My Grace, My child."
I asked, " Then why do you continue to forgive me? Why do You love me
so?"
The Lord answered,
" Because you are My creation. You are my child.
I will never abandon you.
When you cry, I will have compassion and cry with you.
When you shout with joy, I will laugh with you.
When you are down, I will encourage you.
When you fall, I will raise you up.
When you are tired, I will carry you.
I will be with you till the end of days, and I will
love you forever."
Never had I cried so hard before. How could I have been so cold? How
could
I have hurt God as I had done?
I asked God,
"How much do You love me?"
The Lord stretched out His arms, and I saw His nail-pierced hands.
I bowed down at the feet of Christ, my Saviour.
And for the first time, I truly prayed.

good question aaaaaaaaaron! i like topics like this.
i think moby's main contribution to the rave scene was his open mindedness
and free spirited raw dance music. songs like "next is the e" were influencial
to some early happy hardcore artists. "thousand" is very representative of
what gabber has become...5 years later. all of the music on "ambient" was
groundbreaking because the majority of ambient music of the time seemed very
lifeless and impersonal. that album was more emotional that alot of non-dancey
stuff then. then there is "go" which has been sited as an influencial track for
alot of newer industrial bands [i don't see it, but i've read it].
moby's main contribution though, i would have to say, is putting a face to
techno.
the only other techno band/artist that (at the time) was interested in doing
publicity
is altern8. noone else was really into being on stage and having a large
fan base
and being played alot. also, moby was one of the early artists who combined
various forms of techno into one song. like using breakbeats overtop of a
808 house
beat with some hardcore synths and pianos in teh background.
as far as techno being different without moby...well, i don't know if it would.
it may not be as popular RIGHT NOW....but eventually it'd get to the point
it is at now.
most people in the rave scene have just outright ignored alot of what moby
was doing.
at least around '93 i think they did. he became too ambitious for alot of
people, so
i don't really think many were influenced by him. the majority of
influences i see are from
non-techno artists. i think i may be babbling a bit, so i'll stop.

ok, i'll say more about this later if anyone cares to know, but here's a
brief summary:
gabber - 170 to whatever (200 usually) bpm's, heavy metal guitar samples,
usually extreamly offensive words, pounding kick (bass) drum that's
distorted, high hats, and little else....
happy hardcore - 170 to 200 bpm's, break beat (jungle like) and/or
pounding kick, much more melodic than gabber, sing-along words, brightly
colored album sleeves...also known as crappy hardcore by those house
bigots...
digital hardcore - warped versions of every other techno genre, usually
fast pounding kick or break-beat, everything is distorted and lots of
screaming...
that's a pretty bad description, but it's all i have time for right now...

has anyone ever read any interviews with moby where he comments on what
he thinks of gabber? being it is most often so anti-rave, and is usually
pretty emotion-packed (sadly, it's only packed with anger), i think he may be
into it a bit. i'd consider it the punk rock of electronic music.

don't forget them cheesey chipmunk vocals and sped up piano riffs!
it's also got a real old school techno vibe to it.

there is a pretty good (ok, the best so far) article in the new issue of
AP describing many different types of "electronica," a term they
thankfully say is a bad one. i HIGHLY recommend it. there are a few
interviews with some big names in techno too, but not moby.

i saw this yesterday. moby is in it for about two seconds announcing the
next band, "and now ladies and gentlemen, SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!" and also has
two or three snippets form "when it's cold i'd like to die." one has a
added drum line and another has a weird sax or guitar part added. the
movie really sucks and the moby bits aren't worth the cost of rental.
just some advise...
