i think that most people agree that the best intro to moby is the
album "everythign is wrong".  it is his most diversified effort yet.
if you like rock/guitar music, then pick up "animal rights".
if you like ambient, then i suggest "the end of everything" by
voodoo child (moby's alter ego).  if you wanna dance, then get the
mixed and remixed 2cd version of "everything is wrong".
alot of people say that his older ep "move" is his best work, and in
some ways i agree, so check that out too.

        He's the Godfather of Metal, the Don Corleone of headbangers and
puppy-eating Satanists alike. Ozzy Osbourne, heading a reconstituted
Black
Sabbath, is hitting the tour circuit in a big way this summer with
Ozzfest,
and he's hauling along Marilyn Manson, practically tagged Lucifer
incarnate
lately. Pantera, Type O Negative, and a couple of other heavy metal
hellions will be playing the gig, too. Together, this demonic lineup
should
make a few community do-gooders bite their cuticles in fear and opt to
cryogenically freeze their children for the summer rather than see them
attend this orgy of pancake make-up and screaming guitars. Heavy metal
is
back!

Or is it? When was the last time you heard someone use the term "heavy
metal" with a straight face? The mainstream music press treats heavy
metal
like an oozing cow carcass that best belongs in a dump outside the edge
of
town. And there don't seem to be many music fans out there these days
who
will proudly pump their fist in the air and snarl, "I am a metal fan!
Ozzy
rules!"

Heavy metal has become America's dirty little secret. Back in its
heyday,
metal indulged in over-the-top displays of chest-beating masculinity and
aggression, occasional misogyny, huge mall girl hair, and leather and
tiger-striped spandex fashions -- today, we cringe. So, in an effort to
pretend we weren't really that tacky and boob-obsessed, tastemakers and
some former fans turn up their noses and run at the mere whiff of the
tainted heavy metal.

Pantera frontman Philip Anselmo shrugs it all off and says in his deep
Texan growl, "The metal scene ain't what it was. But what is, you know?"

Metal seems like the dogbone buried in the backyard of pop culture these
days. Even Ozzfest and all its hype feels, more than anything, like an
aberration, an attempt to pick up the slack left by a floundering
Lollapalooza. But maybe we're all just looking under the wrong rock.
Maybe
metal still walks among us and we just don't know it, kind of like when
Luke Skywalker didn't know who Yoda really was. Has metal just acquired
a
wardrobe consultant and a new name?

"I look at bands like Korn, Tool, Marilyn Manson, and Nine Inch Nails,
and
to me they're all metal bands," says Moby, who is slated to work as the
executive <Picture: Even Guns and Roses is moving toward the use of
synthesized sounds.> producer on Guns N' Roses' upcoming album, and who
recently released a metal album of sorts of his own, Animal Rights. Dave
Mustaine, lead singer and guitarist of Megadeth, asks, "Well what does
heavy metal sound like? If it sounds like bass, drums, and guitar, then
Nirvana sounds like heavy metal."

The big bands for the crash-and-burn rock scene right now may be Marilyn
Manson, Korn, White Zombie, and Tool, but these acts are also getting
play
on alternative radio, which only adds to the confusion if you're trying
to
fit artists into neat little categories. '70s metal pioneer Alice
Cooper, a
major influence on acts such as Marilyn Manson, can only scratch his
head
about this. "I'm like just about everybody else. I've lost contact with
what is metal and what isn't."

A new kind of metal may have taken hold, but old school metal fans are
pissed. The general feeling among them is that "alternative" music is
the
real Antichrist, or at least a whining bore. A post by Tulip11542 to one
of
the heavy metal folders on the America Online message boards gives a
sense
of the mood in the metal community: "'80s metal was like a never-ending
party!!!!! The '90s generation lacks the whole experience of true FUN
with
music... It's all so drug down and depressing... I would rather rock and
roll all night and party everyday!!!!!"

Other fans are just as crabby. "All of the people who are 'alternative'
music lovers were once metal fans no matter what they tell you," posted
Wire beam on America Online, "they just changed their preferences cause
everyone else did."

Wire beam may be on to something, since it was alternative rock, more
than
anything, that caused the decline of metal in the early '90s. Guns N'
Roses, arguably the biggest rock band in the world at the turn of the
decade, had asked an up-and-coming Nirvana if they would be interested
in
opening for some Guns shows. Nirvana gave their answer: a resounding,
"As
if!" Not only that, <Picture: Dowloadable Videos> but Nirvana leader
Kurt
Cobain went on to wage an all-out war against GNR frontman Axl Rose,
claiming that rock fans had to choose sides: he didn't see how it was
possible for someone to simultaneously like Guns N' Roses, with their
notoriously offensive lyrics, and a band like Nirvana, which stood up
for
the sensitive geek in all of us. Many metal fans did end up jumping
ship.

"Some of the [heavy metal] fans did cross over," says Andrew Stewart,
Music
Director for Seton Hall University's heavy metal/hard rock radio
station,
WSOU. "They thought, 'This is a new direction we're going in, and maybe
we'll give it a shot.'" This new music was, after all, not all that
different from the noise and angry clamor of metal -- it just had a
different dress code and a slightly different Weltanschauung, or world
view. And when you're young, your world view can change as often as your
taste in clothes, especially if it's got a cool soundtrack. But Kurt
Cobain
saw the differences as a chasm, and, in an odd twist of fate, he helped
kill the bands that made Nirvana's success a possibility in the first
place
when they introduced the mainstream to a more aggressive brand of rock.

The music press seized on the Seattle bands like an alligator on a
baby's
arm and trumpeted the "alternative revolution." Suddenly it was all
about
punk-influenced rock, flannel, the Kurt haircut (Tori Spelling even had
it), and self-loathing. "There are a lot of fair weather fans who will
do
something just because it's in the public eye," says Dave Mustaine.
"People
like winners. MTV, radio, television, and newspapers told kids they're
stupid if they listen to heavy metal. But I think the reason journalists
think heavy metal is dying is because they are responsible for killing
it."


The cock-rock breed of metal is digging its way out of the grave,
though,
perhaps hoping to fill the void created by the demise of Seattle's
finest.
You may have heard squat about it, but Megadeth, Moetley Cruee (with
original
frontman Vince Neil back onboard), Pantera, W.A.S.P., Dokken, Slaughter,
Warrant, and Cinderella all either have just released albums or have
albums
out any second. Metallica and Iron Maiden have releases scheduled for
the
end of the year, and Anthrax is currently recording.

But Seton Hall's Stewart says, "The new Megadeth record probably won't
even
get a chance in the mainstream, even if it's the greatest record
Megadeth
ever made."

That may irk old-school metal maniacs, but it's just not clear whether
there are a ton of them out there, or whether they are simply a
particularly vocal minority. Around the time the alternative revolution
was
sweeping the nation, MTV took "Headbanger's Ball," the late-night heavy
metal show hosted by Riki Rachtman, off the air. Rachtman acknowledges
that
"it all comes down to ratings," and that low ratings were probably what
led
to the show's cancellation. But Rachtman thought "Headbanger's Ball"
just
needed some nips and tucks. "The show was in need of a facelift. Metal
was
branching off into so many different directions. Just using the word
'metal' at that point was stupid." In any case, heavy metal took a
serious
beating with the cancellation. Says Rachtman, "The show just
disappeared.
And with it the word heavy metal sort of disappeared too." The resulting
crash left few outlets for the real balls-to-the-wall heavy bands.

Jani Lane, lead singer for Warrant, has gotten used to the media
ignoring
his band. "It's been really frustrating because you can't expect people
to
go out and buy a record if they don't know it's there. We've tried every
avenue possible. The label has even sent the radio single out without
the
band's name on it."

Pantera's Anselmo stresses that metal's decline hasn't affected his
band,
and that a strong metal underground still exists. "There are extreme
underground bands out there. The musicianship, just everything is so
amped.
The motherfuckers are playing their asses off. And it can't be ignored."
Some of Anselmo's fave underground metal bands are Soilant Green from
New
Orleans, Human Remains, and Dark Throne and Satyricon from the
Scandinavian
black metal scene.

A surf through some of the heavy metal sites on the Web also reveals a
global subculture of serious metalheads. Many of these sites have a
self-righteous, "if you don't like metal, go to hell"-type attitude, and
feature graphics of dripping blood and a rip-off of the "Intel Inside"
stamp that proclaims, "Satan Inside."

It might be just this B-movie-style obsession with death and all things
gross that isolated metal in the first place.  Alice Cooper thinks it
wasn't just the media and Seattle that hurt the genre. "The medium of
metal
is limited, so it just kind of painted itself into a corner. I think we
got
into this thing in the late '80s and early '90s of all this doomsday
metal,
and I think what happened was it got so caricatured that it didn't have
a
life anymore. You got to the point of saying, 'Oh, here's another band
talking about the end of the world, and they all have skulls on, and
they
all have long hair and motorcycle boots. Ho hum.'"

Back in the early to mid-'80s, when everyone else was listening to
Michael
Jackson's Thriller album and British new-wavers like Depeche Mode and
Tears
for Fears, heavy metal was widely considered to be the "loser's music"
- --
loud, angry, vaguely Satanic thrash listened to by adolescent boys with
acne, long feathered haircuts, and denim jackets with covers of Ozzy
Osbourne albums painted on the back. The stereotype extended to older
fans,
who were basically working class incarnations of these outsider teens.
These predominantly male metal fans were seen by the clean cut'n'happy
crowd as "dirtbags."

Then came Bon Jovi. Metal gave birth to a handsome son and a more
commercialized strain that was still hard, but a helluva lot easier for
the
masses to swallow. It wasn't long before the cheerleader crowd started
listening not only to Bon Jovi, but Moetley Cruee , Poison, Def Leppard,
Warrant, White Lion, and the slew of other coifed and high-heeled boy
bands
who were angrily tagged "poseurs" by the original Ozzy crowd. MTV heeded
the call, playing these pretty boys in heavy rotation, and the gold rush
was on.

Guns N' Roses broke in 1988 when MTV picked up the video for "Sweet
Child
O' Mine." That same year, MTV interviewed W. Axl Rose and guitarist
Slash
at New York City's famed Chelsea Hotel. Rose presented an unforgettable
image: sitting there stock still and deadpan with a leather police cap,
mirrored sunglasses, flat stringy hair reaching to his shoulders, bad
gray
teeth. He talked in a really deep, deep voice and seemed like a serious
badass who would kick your butt around the block if given the chance.
From
then on, other rockstars' hair got a little flatter, less and less
makeup
was worn, and the more abrasive strains of metal -- Metallica, Megadeth,
and even Ozzy -- pushed through to the mainstream and became the new
sound
of rock'n'roll.

Today's metal simply may be going through a life change. Metal as
embodied
in the music of early Metallica and Slayer, or even in fluffier bands
like
Poison and Bon Jovi, may not be in the cultural forefront anymore, but
an
altered strain of metal that employs a convergence of different musical
styles might very well be, and arguably already is.

At a recent show at New York's CBGB's, the indie metal band Candiria
showed
how metal bands are blurring the lines of musical categories. Candiria's
singer, who has an aggressive bark like Max Cavalera of Sepultura, is
black
(something that would have been almost unheard of ten years ago for a
heavy
metal band), and the music's funky rap edge recalls Rage Against the
Machine or Faith No More. The fans were less predictable, too: leather
and
layered, long hair was scarce; fans didn't look all that different from
a
crowd you might see at a Beastie Boys or Pearl Jam concert. The women
were
noticeably alternachick -- gone are the days, it seems, of leather
microminis, garters, and porn star makeup jobs.

While Andrew Stewart thinks that metal right now has turned into more of
a
hardcore scene, with bands like Sick of It All and Helmet popular with
metal fans, he sees metal's future as possibly tied to electronic music.
"I
think if metal is to come out again, it's going to have to be a new
style
of metal, something more aggressive than just the straight guitar metal
of
the past. I think you're going to see a lot more electronics used and an
industrial type of sound."

Even Guns N' Roses is moving toward the use of synthesized sounds:
"They're
open to everything," says Moby, "they're playing around with samplers
and a
bunch of old synthesizers. I wouldn't say that they're trying to jump on
any bandwagon, but they're very open to whatever excites them."

Ozzfest is most likely getting so much attention now because of Mr.
Manson
and his alleged Ozzy-esque blood-guzzling antics. While Manson may not
call
his music metal, he undoubtedly owes a huge debt to it, and he is
perhaps
what metal has become as we approach the millennium. And of course we
can't
forget the role of the music industry: right now the record execs are
hunched over and quivering in the corners of their offices, wondering
what
the hell to do to revive the lagging industry. Hey, why not try metal?
It
worked before.

This is the best article/interview I've seen on Moby in a long time.
The questions were excellent, and even I -- a longtime Moby fan --
gained further insight into what makes him tick.  Definately check
this out.

Get the _Move_ EP.  It's Moby's most awesome readily-available release.
It blows _Everything Is Wrong_ out of the water, IMHO. :)

What you get after that depends on what style(s) of Moby's multifaceted
talent you like best.  I love everything Instinct released by Moby
(most of which is very hard to find), and his techno releases on Mute
Records up through Hymn and Demons/Horses (1994).  After that, Moby
really broadened the stylistic range of his releases, so you'll
often find an excellent track right next to something that just doesn't
do it for you.  That's normal.  That's Moby.  He likes to encourage
his audience and himself to tolerate and enjoy a full spectrum of
non-genre-bound music.  Moby wants to challenge the status quo, and
that seems like a breath of fresh air in a time when many other
artists are stagnating & getting into a rut.

cd-rom drivers to fix this problem(I have a Toshiba :( ).

   Talk about going against the grain: At the very moment ambient music
- -
   call it electronica, or techno, or whatever - is "discovered" by the
Wall
   Street Journal and media from every other corner of the earth, one
of its
   pioneering artists, Moby, issues a roaring, snarly guitar-based rock
   record.

   Could it be he's bored with the machine-perfected percolation of the
   modern ambient scene? Perhaps he's looking for something a bit more
   expressive? More human?

   It sure sounds that way. With its overheated cries for intimacy and
   stun-gun guitar solos, it's the kind of unburdening statement that
you'd
   expect from an influential musical polymath who has been anonymous
for too
   long. The thing is, unlike Aphex Twin, who makes a desperate attempt
at
   singing on his current Richard D. James Album, Moby (real name:
Richard
   Hall) is not half bad at the mike. He's got a voice filled with a
   foreboding desperation, and a knack for turning an ordinary scream
into
   unusual catharsis. When he sings Mission Of Burma's "That's When I
Reach
   For My Revolver", it's clear that he's not trying for technical
   excellence; he's using voice as another instrument to bring the ideas
   across.

   That's the really stunning thing about Animal Rights, which Moby made
   mostly by himself: hearing this keyboard geek singing, and playing
guitar,
   and organizing these blunt, go-for-the-jugular tracks around the
squawky
   noises we've come to loathe from cookie-cutter grunge bands. With an
   instinctual grace, Moby builds his postpunk around the same
fragmentary
   riffs that have always peppered his electronic meanderings -
rippling,
   recurring ideas that function as structural anchors. On tracks like
the
   funkified "Come On Baby", the guitar patterns are fashioned from the
same
   blues clichΘs metal bands have trampled for years. Just when you
think you
   know what these things sound like, Moby makes the repetition
sinister and
   dramatic: He uses a familiar three-note crunching pattern to support
the
   scream at the center of "Soft", and alternates between prowling, coy
   verses and a gnarled Nirvana-like instrumental hook to deliver "Say
It's
   All Mine".

   For all its brio, Animal Rights does offer a few slices of vintage
Moby:
   the slithering, meditative instrumental "Anima", the film-score
opening
   "Dead Sun", a violin elegy called "Now I Let It Go", and a gorgeous,
   ever-cresting minimalist anthem called "Alone". These tracks are not
just
   there to soothe the rave-generation fan base; they provide context
and
   contrast, and argue that unlike his MIDI-bound home studio peers,
Moby
   continues to approach music in expansive, unpredictable ways.
