Here is something that I thought you all might be interesting in seeing. I
got this from Rolling Stone online:
When Guns n' Roses last took the world by storm, Russia was under
a communist regime, O.J. Simpson was earning raves for playing Nordburg in
"Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear," and Moby entered the charts for the
first time with the single, "Go." Six years later, Moby will help put the
Gunners back on the charts and resurrect arguably the biggest band of
the late eighties. "It's been a while since [Guns n' Roses] have made a
record and they sort of feel like a lot of music's passed them by," says
Moby, who will most likely serve as executive producer on the band's new
album. "They're really interested in doing something slightly different, more
contemporary." G n' R is also a shadow of the band that recorded the
smash "Appetite For Destruction" ten years ago. Original members Slash,
Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler are gone, as are Stradlin's and Adler's
replacements, Gilby Clarke and Matt Sorum. Axl Rose, Duff McKagan, Clarke
replacement, Paul Huge, and former Nine Inch Nails members Robin Finck (lead
guitar) and Chris Vrenna (drums) have been holed up in the studio for two
years, but only now has this latest incarnation of Guns n' Roses
solicited a producer to help record what will eventually be the follow-up to
1991's "Use Your Illusion" albums and 1993's all-covers "The Spaghetti
Incident?" A month and half ago, Rose summoned Moby to listen to what the
techno star called "tons and tons of ideas but almost no finished songs"
and ask the environmentalist if he'd like to produce the album. Apparently
smitten with the punk, thrash sound on Moby's latest release, "Animal
Rights," Rose is hoping some of it will rub off on his band. So far, Moby
seems impressed by the new Guns material, which he calls "melodic and
emotional." "It doesn't rock quite as hard [as "Appetite for Destruction"],"
says Moby. "Something that I find important is that it does sort of kick
ass." Currently in the midst of promoting "Animal Rights," writing the
score for the Joel Silver HBO film, "Double Tap" and re-doing the
007 theme for the next James Bond film,Moby doesn't have time to work on G n'
R's album for six consecutive months. He'll likely hire an engineer and
technician to help run things and "come in once a week or once every two
weeks" for hands-on production. Six weeks in, with no formal arrangement,
the mild-mannered Moby and Guns n'Roses are still enjoying their honeymoon.
"The working environment is great," says Moby. "They're the nicest bunch of
people."

A friend in California managed to find a copy of disc 2 (the one with the
Heat mix of God Moving Over The Face Of The Water) at Tower (I think). Try
ordering it from a local chain-they're usually pretty good; expensive but
good....

Subject: (mobility) "Techno" in the news
This story appears in the April 97 edition of U. The National College
Magazine
"Electronic Avenue"
Electronica: the new alternative to alternative
by Tricia Romano(from Univ. of Washington)
In 1991, the music charts were crowded with benign R&B acts like
Paula Abdul and Mariah Carey and bland pop and country like Wilson
Phillips and Garth Brooks. The world of popular music was safe,
formulaic and incredibly dull.
Not long afterward, a trio named Nirvana released its stellar
album, "Nevermind", which rocketed to the number-one position on the
"Billboard" charts. Popular music hasn't sounded the same since.
Now, five years later, the top of the charts look suspiciously the
same as in '91. Bland R&B (Toni Braxton), bloated pop (Kenny G.) and
generic country (LeAnn Rimes) acts are perched alongside Pearl Jam
wannabes (Bush) and whiny aggrogirl rock (Alanis Morrisette). It's a
period when R.E.M. and Pearl Jam turn in critically acclaimed records
that flop with the fans. Music, the kids say, is not all right. And
everyone from the record industry to the fans is taking a big breath
and waiting for the face of popular music to metamorphose once again.
Techno revolution
They may not know it yet, but they're waiting for techno.
Techno (now called electronic) music has been ignored, denounced
and ridiculed by American critics and mainstream listeners for the past
decade. At the same time, electronica has quietly built a small army
of fans who learn of the music mainly through underground dance parties
("raves") and electronica insider magazines like "Urb" and "XLR8R". In
the past few months, "Spin", "Rolling Stone", "Newsweek", "The New York
Times" and even the "Wall Street Journal" ran stories posing the
question: Will electronic music be the next big thing?
"Electronic music is just going to explode in the next 18 months,"
predicts junior Jake Buffington, station manager at Arizona State U.'s
KASR radio.
Many people in the music industry agree. Marco Collins, DJ and
music director at The End 107.7 radio station in Seattle, has been
instrumental in getting electronic-based acts on the air. Like any
other mainstream radio station, The End has a predetermined format that
leaves little or no room for experimentation. But Collins gave it a
whirl anyway, spinning bands like Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and
Orbital on prime-time radio, unedited.
"It's a risk throwing electronic music on," he says. "But it's
important for a station that is supposed to be about change - new
things and new ideas - that we go there. You know, actually delving
into it before it becomes a fad."
Euro stash
Funny thing. Because in England, techno has been a staple of
radio for roughly a decade. Bands such as Prodigy, which is relegated
to playing to audiences of less than 1,000 in the Sates, will play to a
crowd of 60,000 in the Mother Country. In England, it's not uncommon
to find a Chemical Brothers track charting in the Top 10 with the likes
of Oasis, Elastica or Echobelly.
Nils Bernstein, a represenative at the mother of all grunge
labels, Sub Pop, explains the phenomenon quite succinctly: "The youth
culture in England and Europe is far more centered around dance clubs
that it is here," he says. "Also, England and Europe are relatively
tiny markets compared to the U.S. - small enough that a simple fad can
have seriously commerical consequences."
Andrea Mulrain, a regional represenative for electronica
front-runner London Records, agrees. "[England} is the more progressive
nation when it comes to dance stuff," she explains. "Our country is
grounded in formatted radio. Everything is so compartmentalized."
Reborn in the U.S.A.
In a country where every little nuance in music needs to be labled
and defined, is American music ready for such an extreme change?
Collins points out that traces of electronic music's influence
have already made a dent on the music scene - albeit in a rock-hybrid
form. Trip-hoppers Massive Attack remixed Garbage. The Chemical
Brothers remixed the Charlatans UK. Tori Amos got special treatment
from Armand Van Helden and Rabbit in the Moon. And Bomb the Bass' Tim
Simenon remixed Depeche Mode.
Meanwhile, other artists have been stealing stylistic snippets
from electronica tracks and incorporating them into a more traditional
"verse, chorus, verse" format. "Spin's" Artist of the Year, Beck, has
been the most successful at meshing all these styles. Meanwhile,
newcomers the Sneaker Pimps (from England, natch) combine Garbage-like
layers of manufactured beauty with saccharine-sweet vocals and catchy
melodies.
Not everyone on the campus music scene is jumping on the
electronic bandwagon. "Since we're close to L.A., we're big on ska,"
says Tony Mayberry, KUNV assistant operations manager at the U. of
Nevada, Las Vegas. But he adds that requests for electronic music have
surged during the past few months.
The problem with promoting electronic music as the "next big
thing" is that it could spell an inevitable doom for the art form.
Longtime fans of techno are watching and listening with mixed emotions
of glee and horror as MTV installs "Amp", a new show devoted entirely
to electronica.
But Collins remains optimistic. He's obiviously hit a nerve with
his listeners. The DJ relishes stories about kids calling the station
and requesting Tool, Nirvana, and...Prodigy. Collins says it doesn't
matter if the music was created with guitars or with a drum machine. If
kids connect with the music, then the music will survive. "I said it
before, but the energy of Prodigy [and all electronica bands] is
parallel to that of Nirvana."
Only time will tell.
Along w/ the story came:
two pictures: The Prodigy("Prodigal son.") and Orbital("Lost in
space."),
Guest Expert: Coolio on techno: "I hate techno. You have to be on
drugs to get into it. I can't get into it."
and
Techno Lowdown
A techno-phobes's guide to electronic music:
House: Originated in Chicago and is noted for its consistent,
repetitive beats - about 120 beats per minute (bpm) - and diva-style
singing. Ex: Boris Dugosch, Love Tribe
Deep Dish Techno: The most common and popular format, it's also the
most computer-generated. Very high-energy with different layers of
sounds and high bpm. Ex: Hardfloor, Prodigy
Trance: Generally more melodic and complex thant your garden-variety
techno. So named because the music should guide the audience into a
trancelike state. Ex: Underworld, Future Sound of London
Ambient: Moure soundscape and setting that a cohesive form of music.
It rarely has steady beats and is sometimes mixed with other house or
techno. Ex: The Orb, Brian Eno
Drum and Bass (a.k.a. Jungle): Comes from London and is characterized
by erratic double-layered beats and bass lines, with a second melody
floating over the top. Ex: Goldie, Alex Reece
Trip Hop: Arrives straight from the Mother Country. Shifty, layered
noise with slow hip-hop beats and emphasis on vocals. Ex: Tricky,
Portishead
Acid Jazz: A mixture of hip-hop beats and jazz-influenced sounds that
usually features lots of saxophone and some slick rapping. Ex: Guru,

Also known as Voodoo Child, Moby is a musician notorious for
producing wildly diverse styles of music, from his early dance music to
his recent guitar rock. Because of this stylistic independence and
genre-bending risktaking he is highly respected though controversial.
Moby became famous in the early 1990s with a number of worldwide
techno hits, and for creating dazzling remixes for other artists such as
The Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica and Soundgarden. Lately, his
focus has shifted to heavy guitar music. A punk rockin', crowd
moving, quasi-Christian vegan animal rights activist, Moby simply
defies classification. Moby's long awaited second Elektra album
Animal Rights, released to critical acclaim on February 11, has already
had a significant impact in Europe.

Actually, I own quite a bit of ambient music(including afx, orb, eno,
early fsol, etc) and it didn't help me to appreciate Moby's Ambient
at all. IMO, Ambient is his second worse album(to AR) and I fully
understand why Moby didn't want Instinct to release it at first. I
find it a bore at best and annoying most of the time(besides tracks
one, two, and five). This is not to say Moby can't make ambient.
Little Idiot is a great disc, as are The End Of Everything and the ambient songs on EIW.
Actually, Moby is one of the best ambient artists I've heard, but
unfortunately I just don't like his album with that title. Ironic?

Subject: (mobility) In a Dream
in a dream
i heard the voice of blue waters
singing to me
a tune of serenity
a tune of peace
and patience
and from a distance
i saw a man.
small figured, a bit awkward looking
strangely beautiful
a whale approached me on the other side
that man reached his hand out to me
which protected me from the whales big mouth
that man was Moby, and that whale was Moby Dick
they both shared a common identity with the seamo
moby calmed the sea and protected us humans from danger
and moby dick wreaked havoc and chaos
that man came to my aid and kept me from being swallowed
God? he will never come close to the One living above
a good man with love and care
indeed, that's what he was
and i pay homage to such a man.
this is a little thought i'd put in since i really don't write much on this
list....love you all!

should do what ex punker Henry Rollins does.. write a book and then go
on a spoken word tour.. its obvious he isnt shy about his beliefs and
enjoys talking about them... or even better... if he spoke at a small

interesting idea... but im not sure how well it would work. while i like
Moby's ideas a lot more that Rollin's... Rollin's started doing spoken
work years ago & developed a large spoken word fanbase. if Moby did
do a spoken word tour type thing he would probably have to start out
small... thats all i have to say for now... it is a pretty interesting
idea
(sorry bout the weird symbols... my computer went nuts & i cant get rid of

When Ronnie's on, he's -- as Tooth and Nail head Brandon Ebel put it -- a
laser guided, pop music genius. But for every "Courage" or "Sorcery," it
seems there's a couple of dozen, well, everything else he's written, that
don't quite measure up. I loved the experimental edge of Dance House
Children. But it looks like when brother Jason left to form Starflyer 59,
he took all his darker, moody tendencies with him. Making the new Joy
Electric a big, happy gay thing that gets way too sweet.

Subject: (mobility) Spoken Word
About this spoken word thing...just a few cents of info regarding my opinion...
I really dig the spoken word scene...two of my favourites in that field of
work are Rollins and Laurie Anderson. Each has their own style (one is raw
and the other has an amazing stage show). If Moby did the spoken word
circuit, he'd definitely have to start out small, but I don't think he'd
really get far with it. His presence on stage while talking is very quiet
and shy. Almost as if he's nervous. His interviews on radio and TV I think
show a quiet individual with alot to say, and music helps him release those
demons inside. His writing expresses the same, but if he actually READ them
on stage...boring. Rollins has this controlling presence on stage (voice,
look, honesty...) and Laurie is engulfed with scientific wizardry. Unless
you consider shyness a quality on stage, I don't.
Not to cut down Moby...his writings inside EIW and AR are great. Maybe he
should just use them in a multimedia presentation along with his show or as
some interactive book/CD.
Anyway...I'm gonna be seeing Laurie Anderson at the Park West here in
Chi-town this wednesday and I'm very excited.

i most surely agrre with these words... Mody doesnt seem to have the right
kind of stage presence for spoken word. he has a lot to say, he has a lot
in him, but.... i dont think that he would have much success with spoken
word. but that doesnt mean that it is not an interesting concept. he'd
probably be a lot more successful if he wrote a book of his ideas. he'd
probably be able to express them better in that form

i do love the spoken word genre and personally i find Laurie Anderson a
bit excentric and just.. well just too Laurie Anderson... anyway this
isnt a spoken word list so ill get on to my moby point:
when i saw (and i know i have said this at least 10 times on the list
but its a fun story) moby live it was lollapalooza when he was playing
the small stage.. but lo and be hold elasticas keyboard player couldnt
get a green card so moby took over their big stage slot... he DEMANDED
attention... he was very loud, jumping all over the place, talking about
eating why we dont eat cats and dogs and why we shouldnt eat cows and
chickens etc... not very quite and shy.. hmmm maybe because of the size
of the crowd.. maybe if we see moby playing larger venues he will be
this wild crazy man.. oh well what ever...
weather you agree or not with my spoken word idea you must admit and
book by moby would kick some major rear!
as a little side note: there was a question a week or so ago about who
would we like to see moby work with... i would love to see moby remix
some stuff off the new jamiroquai album... (btw: if you are planning on
seeing jamiroquai at the Warfield on May 15th in San Fran let me know
and we can meet up and dance the night away!)

woah! not to get involved here, but i am going to step in. He asked a
simple question.. no need to jump all over him... take personal attacks
to private email... and to straighten something out... i used to and
still do listen to all types of music, electronic and hardcore [punk]
included... you dont have to be one or the other... and hardcore [punk]
fans arent either drug abusers or straight edge.... theres a whole lot
inbetween....

i just get annoyed when i hear massive generalizations like i read.
