My name is Infinite Oblivion. I am 14 years old. I currently own "Bring
Back My Happiness", "Feeling So Real Remixes", "Rare" , "Go Collected
Remixes", and "Animal Rights". I first heard about Moby in an interview
with Option. I just kinda got into the techno scene so I decided to buy
two singles "Bring Back My Happiness" and "Feeling So Real". Both were
so
good that whenever I visit the music store I almost always buy another
Moby CD. :) At least when I have money. I am very into the tracking
scene, Ramones, Pixies, Nirvana, Wu-Tang-Clan, Operation Ivy, Beck,
Tricky, and lots of other stuff. I listen to a lot of different stuff,
but mostly techno now a days. Ummm I really love "Thats When I Reach for
My Revolver". I saw the video on MTV when they were showing M2. At
first
I thought it was somebody else, but the guy looked familiar. Thirty
seconds later I said hey thats Moby! Yeah! MTV is playing Moby! Right
after that I went and bought the CD which is excellent. Can anyone
recommend any other good Moby CD's besides the ones I own. I am not sure
about buying Ambient, Move, and Moby or whether I should buy the Evil
Ninja Moby double CD. Love to hear some suggestions. L8z.

Moby
"Animal Rights"
(Elektra)
Just as the recording industry grabs onto "electronica" - the new
catch-all term for techno, jungle, trip-hop, and the rest of computer
dance - as the great hope to help ease some serious doldrums, early
techno advocate Moby says "tech-NO" on his latest CD, "Animal Rights."
Leaving behind the diverse sonic gourmet powering his acclaimed 1995
CD, "Everything Is Wrong," Moby unveils two modes here: almost churchlike
instrumental passages segueing into industrial-style rockers.
Yet Moby is only partially successful here. The CD's first half is a
washout. After a promisingly ethereal "Dead Sun," Moby starts rocking on
"Someone To Love," but his voice is never commanding enough, his hooks are
weak and his musical attack, led by guitars, is too tame to blister. Ten
songs into the 70-plus-minute disc, he finds his way with a credible cover
of Mission of Burma's "That's When I Reach for My Revolver" and a number of
melodic instrumentals.
-Howard Cohen(Knight-Ridder Newspapers)
Me here now....for those who've heard both versions..is one better than the
other(Note..I'm talking about the UK AR vs USA AR..not TWIRFMR)?

This is from the February 14 issue of Jam magazine, a local, Orlando,
Florida magazine.
MOBY
Animal Rights
Elektra Records
* * * * 1/2
I'm going to take a risk of sounding ignorant to make a point here. Up until
now, I have always lumped Moby under the "Techno" umbrella. Mostly due to my
own preconceived ideas about artists who mainpulate machines to get the
sounds that they want onto wax. I never really paid that much attention to
the aural pictures that make up the body of his work. As the saying goes,
little did I know that I was so missing so much. Simply put, my mind has
been changed, my mind has been opened a little more, and my mind has been
blown away.
Part of the reason is the fact that Moby has traded in all of his synths and
processors and opted for a guitar. In the face of the death of guitar rock,
Moby stands up in defense of punk-influenced riffing and breathes new life
in its use in modern, dance-oriented music. Moby is gritty, dirty, angry,
and all of the other qualities that make hard rock so satisfying, but he's
still original.
There is a quote on the inside of the liner notes that gives us all a pretty
good insight into how to get the most out of this record. "Please listen to
Animal Rights in its entirety at least once." It fits so well because in a
lot of ways this record is a journey. A journey with several twists and
turns; a journey that is angry, sensitive, thought provoking, and punk all
in the same breath. Somehow, the ambient glow of "Dead Sun" moving into the
full-on assault of "Someone To Love" just seems to...fit. It's a paradox
that rolls throughout the entire masterpiece. At well over 70 minutes odds
are you won't miss the time as it slides by. My suggestion is to lock
yourself in a room and let your mind wander through the first great record
of the year. You just might realize as I did that truly inspiring music and
art always have less boundaries than we think.

I'll write to the guy that I had been talking to about a month ago to
see how things are going. Hopefully he will respond quickly. Also, I
didn't plan on hearing from CNotes until this upcoming week seeing that
the promotion was suppose to official end on Feb 28, only three days
ago.

i recently got moby's 1979 remix, and i must
say that it is outstanding! i was not a fan
of the original song too much, but moby turned
it into something totally different...and better.
this is without a doubt my favorite remix of
moby's for another artist. it just screams "moby"
because of it's electronic ambience, guitar noise,
and emotion. if you haven't heard this yet,
i can't recomend it enuff.

As for liking anything w/ Moby's name on it..just ask a few ppl what they
think about the Lopez singles...Until I hear differently(unfortunatly I
didn't get the answer I wanted at last night's chat)..I'm still going to
hold to my opinion that those tracks are his way of showing the world what
a lot of "techno" has become..repetitive and w/out feeling.
if i remember correctly, moby said that the lopez singles were just moby
singles released under a different name. i take that answer to mean that moby
does not release songs that are done without feeling. i think moby is
incapable of making music that has no feeling. just my take on it...

I agree with you. I love the Lopez singles (though Why Can't it Stop
is much better than Emptiness IMO) and I think they have feeling. The
ONLY Moby song I can think of that doesn't 'seem' to have feeling is
Sim 1 by Voodoo Child. I don't know why, I just don't like that song..

the first rock tune i heard was the HoS mix of all that i need is to be
loved, and it was so raw and emotional, i liked it. it wasn't what i
expected from moby, but i liked it. not long after that, i heard new
dawn fades. now, his voice isn't the greatest on there, i guess, but
he's singing his heart out on that tune, and i love it. if you've
heard joy division, i think the way he sang it was a perfect tribute
to ian curtis. you don't have to like new dawn fades, but i think it's
an incredible song, so i hope you'll give it another chance.
by the way, what is the last line that he yells? i can't understand him :)

Well..according to Moby...it was pressure from all sides(MTV, record
company, etc) as to why he accepted the censorship...I don't think AR is a
"make or break" album for Moby..but I think he wants to get his word out
about his ideals..and seeing how AR is a rock/punk album...more ppl might
buy it..hence..he'll get his word out...Seeing how many ppl(I'm assuming
here) watch 120 Min/M2(is it censored here too?), he's going to let the
censored version play so ppl can see the video..say "Moby rocks!(or whatever)
...and buy AR...I view Moby's move just like Consolidated's(they left
Nettwerk for FFRR/London Recordings...not for $$$ ..but for exposure..so
they could get their word out)...Sometimes you gotta sell yourself to the
devil to get what you want in the world.

Subject: Re: (mobility) true expression..
I think that echo's comments are purely correct..
That chat was a disgraceful exhibition of conversation. The people are
there thoroughly "worship" Moby in a strange, confused way. Nobody really
had anything relevant to say to him. If someone has something negative to
say then you must let them express their feelings. The internet is about
expression, I think Moby should realize that not everybody glorifies him
the way that some of you do.
Secondly, this list is ABOUT Moby. Even if it's negative, anything can be
expressed. Even if a response is negative, respect is always due.
Thirdly, I thought Moby would take a negative comment better. He should
have asked echo was he disliked animal rights, instead of asking "why are
you so mean?". After all, it was a form of constructism criticism. Moby
doesn't have any problem with preaching his views on subjects (album cover
essays, urb magazine, etc.) Why can't he accept others views? I think
that's the trouble with him...You have to listen to what he has to say but
he doesn't want to hear others' opinions..
I think if Moby goes back to making techno instead of punk/thrash
metal, then he is truly selling-out. He's just changing because it's
fashionable. He made AR because he thought people would like it because
it's more "alternative" but it would have popular two years ago. He's just
late jumping on the bandwagon...
Maybe you'll want to kick me off the list too...afterall, I just feel that

End of mobility Digest V1 #13
*****************************
To subscribe to mobility Digest, send the command:
subscribe mobility-digest
in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com". If you want to
subscribe something other than the account the mail is coming from, such
as a local redistribution list, then append that address to the
"subscribe" command; for example, to subscribe "local-mobility":
subscribe mobility-digest local-mobility@your.domain.net
A non-digest (direct mail) version of this list is also available; to
subscribe to that instead, replace all instances of "mobility-digest"
in the commands above with "mobility".
Back issues are available for anonymous FTP from ftp.xmission.com, in
pub/lists/mobility/archive. These are organized by date.
