lately, but atari teenage riot is in the new ish of AP. just a small
blurb, but they get their own pop-out. (eg. box) this is also the first
time i've seen the word "gabber" used in a non dj mag. good work!!

hey everyone..
well now this might be an annoying question to some of you but i guess i
am just very naive.. i only started getting into moby's 'kind of music'
last year.. prior to that i was into groups like primus and tool who are
usually jammed into neat little categories.. well i still am into them,
but i was just wondering if someone would like to explain to me the
difference between styles such as.. techno, ambient, house, etc.. and
maybe give me an example of each>? and what is orbital>? if this is a
pain in the ass im sorry, but id like to sort of understand the
differences.. thanks.. sar*

hmmm...i think we've had this question before, but since i have nothing
else to do at the moment...here goes...
ambient - slow, usually beatless, "spacey," ex. aphex twin's "ambient
works v. 2
trip hop- slow, very dependany on "phat" beats, funky - ex. fugees
dub - ambient trip hop - ex. orb
big beat - mid tempo, lots of drums, ex. chemical brothers
house - mid tempo, dependant on the "kick" or bass drum, diva vocals,
pianos, ex. tod terry, armand van helden
techno - slow to fast tempo, mosly "kick" drum and hi hats but there are
exceptions, more melodic synth lines, lots of vocals - ex. moby
"electronica" - any kind of tempo, any kind of drums, odd times and
complicated synth lines - ex. orbital
trance - mid to fast, very dependant on the kick, usually very melodic,
few voclas, long un-changing synth lines - ex. juno reactor
break beat - fast, no dominant kick, very "crazy" drums, synth lines very
widely - ex. early prodigy
jungle - fast, but half time, break beat like drums, very low bass tones,
few synth lines and samples - ex. goldie
happy hardcore - fast to very fast, break beat and/or kick, very melodic
and "uplifting" synth lines, sped up vocals, (usualy female)
ex. force & styles, justin time
gabber - usualy very fast, distorted kick, angry vocals, simple synth
lines - ex. lenny dee, D.O.A.
these are just a few i could think of. **NOTE** these are my own views!
if you dissagree or have something to add, go ahead, but please don't
start flamming me! thanks! hope this helps.

hey there sarah
being naive is cool. :)
techno: basically anything electronic with a driving beat and
sparse vocals, usually samples. a good example would be
Lords of Acid.
ambient: mellow is the word of the day. relaxed, spacey,
futuristic mood music. a good example here would be Air
Liquide or Future Sound of London
house: this is where it all started. named after a club in
(chicago? detroit? i forget which) called The Warehouse, this
is pretty much where electronic music split off from
hip-hop/rap. a good example of house... hmmm... well, damn
near eceryone has at least one song that sounds 'housey'.
scratching records, driving hip-hop beats... crowd movers.
orbital is a trance group... they're pretty decent.
any more questions?
:)

gabber is shitty music , what usually come from Countries like Netherlands
and Germany etc. really hard techno, with really hard bassdrum, simple
synthlines, really fast (bpm 180 or more). i hate it, it is shitty, i dont
recommend it. my favourite style of all is house, exspecially without any
vocals or just some little diva vocal.

Marilyn Manson similar to Moby??? Ahem I'd say the first *really big*

hey gang... not sure if anyone else got this, but i thought i'd post it
anyways...
Moby has been exclusively commissioned by MGM/United Artists to record an
updated version of John Barry's classic "James Bond Theme". The track will
be released as a single in the autumn as part of the build-up for the 18th
James Bond movie, "Tomorrow Never Dies".
His next album is set to be a collection of Moby songs that have featured
in movies. "I Like To Score" will be released in September on Mute Records
(UK/Europe)/Elektra Records (USA/rest of the world). As well as the
reworked Bond theme, the album will feature new recordings of Moby classics
such as "Go", "I Feel It", and his legendary cover of Joy Division's "New
Dawn Fades" (never before released on album), from movies ranging from last
year's critically acclaimed "Heat" to recent smashes "Scream" and "The
Saint". The album will also include several new tracks from Moby's first
full film score; "Double Tap" is produced by Joe Silver of "Die Hard" &
"Basic Instinct" fame and stars Patricia Arquette.
Meanwhile, Moby has just recorded a version of the Clash's "Straight To
Hell" with Heather Nova, to be included on a fothcoming Clash tribute
album; he is currently working with the Butthole Surfers on a song for the
forthcoming movie "Spawn", before starting work on his third 'proper'
album, due for release in 1998.

Well, my only suggestions is... when you go, try to realize that it's the
music that you're there for, not the drugs. Just dance and have fun I

I don't think he meant an unreleased track. He said unreleased on an album..
probably meaning a Moby album (not a compilation, not a single..).

well its been a while since I've spoken up on the list.. so I think its
time:
1) We have had the Marilyn Manson thread at least 2 other times
resulting in a split of people who like MM (like myself) and those who
hate MM... On this third time I dont expect anything different.. no ones
minds are going to change.. forget it... what it has to do with moby
anyway eludes me
2) Big Top Tour: hell yeah! Moby AND Aphex Twin.. its going to just be a
huge touring live rave... im just a little scared since they will be
playing such HUGE venues (at least in CA) that all the junior high kids
are going to be there getting drunk and high and doing stupid concert
antics (mosh pits [well for mobys punk stuff it would be okay], fights,
etc.). Oh well...
3) Got Prodigy yesterday (and Radiohead...).. stood in line with same
junior high kids mentioned above (no offence if you are a junior high
kid.. if you are on the mobility list you are mature enough not to be
classified with the rest of em). Girls talking about how crazy "that guy
with the weird head" is and guys saying how its like "thrash punk but
with keyboards instead of guitars"..... uhhhhhh..... yeah.. sure pal..
anyway.. my take on the new prodigy album... not their best... but its
still in the top 90% of "electronica" albums out there.. just one
question.. did they have to name the first song "Smack My Bitch Up" is
this a new trend? techno will now go the way of gansta rap and talk
about abuse towards women? oh well... btw: new radiohead is very good
for those of you out there who like the guitar/bass/drum/vocals rock n
roll thing
ummm.... thats about it from here... oh.. Its looking like I might be
moving up to Sacramento (im on the east side of the SF Bay right now)..
is there anyone on the list in the Sacramento area? if so message me
privately... need someone to show me around :)

radiohead is one of my favorite bands. They somehow remind me of the
pixies, and the singer has that remarkable talent of going michael stipe
(i.e. mumbling) on vocals in concert.

manson's fault that half the kids between the ages of 12 and 17

i love to see how many people feel a need to speak up at the mention of
marilyn manson. it just goes to show how much of an impact they've made.
i'm happy!
anyway, a while back moby was rumored to have played a show or shows with
MM. did that ever happen? and if so, did moby have anything to say about it?
and please, i've shown *GREAT* restraint by not responding to all your MM
comments. let them stop here, ok?

who gets to decide who has talent? i mean anyone that sells a few
million records obviously has some talent, wether its musical talent
or warping peoples mind talent thats up to you to decide. but i think
we would all agree he is talented at making money.

Um, I have to disagree with this definition of dub. Dub is a style of bass-
heavy music with Jamiacan (sp?) origins. It certainly preceeded "ambient"
and "trip hop". Jamaican? Aw, sometimes it just doesn't look like it is
spelled right any way.
Sorry. I don't mean to be anal about these definitions. Just trying to share

I have them. They are minimal underground-style dance tracks, for
lack of me knowing a better way to classify them. They are not
melodic like much of Moby's other music, and they won't appeal to

Wait one month. The Voodoo Child album is supposed to come out in
the US on July 29th. I think that CDnow (http://www.cdnow.com) has
the import on sale for a reasonable price, but I'm not sure. It is
a wonderful mini-album of simple electronic music.

Actually...Who decides the hits is the record companies.
Do you think suddenly across the land at the same time everyone just happens
to love that new song. NO. The record companies filter their idea of good
music(which is at times amazing music); leaving out better bands in the indie
and unheard of section, and puts their music onto the radio. If you are
indie..usually if you have some talent and popularity one local radio station
will spin you. Those with the money make the rules. MM isn't so much of

alright, but the record company doesn't force you to support
the band. of all the people that i know that bought the album
with sweet dreams on it, only five or six got it because it
was manson. record companies push songs that they
want to succeed, but it's up to the people to request it
or spend the money on the singles. and i think that indie
music doesn't get played because it has horrible circulation.
the more that people hear it, the better off you'll be, but
small bands just don't have the money to press their music.
and anyways, a lot of people aren't open minded to new
music, so they want to hear the new manson single over a
band that they've never heard of. it's a problem that a lot
of people have.

is there something wrong with getting an album because you like one song
on it and you want to hear what else the band does? to bring this
conversation to a moby standpoint.. i got Moby-Everything Is Wrong (my
first moby purchase) because I had heard Go a while back and then i saw
him live and was amazed by it and wanted to hear more of what he did..
was i wrong? what should i have done? waited til i heard every song on

indie music doesnt get radio airplay because it doesnt have any money
behind it.. for a radio station to play your song.. you a) have to give
them the actual song b) kiss their ass like crazy (in the us its illegal
for a record company to give money to a radio station.. but gifts are
not illegal)

Manson was a new band that they had never heard of

purchase emptiness and why cant it stop? by lopez (both on cd). they
look real cool, but i just want to know if anyone already has them. also,
is
there a domestic release of voodoo childs the end of everything? --
unless
its simply mind-blowing, i dont want to pay $26.99 for the import.
thanks.
I've got all of the Trophy releases and they're pretty solid-certainly not
on par with more recent techno excursions by other bands, but good
nonetheless. I don't have End Of Everything, simply because it's due to be
released domestically in the next few weeks. Like you, I'm not willing to
pay that much for it ;)

I'm on the chemical list, as well as this one; it's usually got quite a bit
of good discussions going on, although it's been rather juvenille of late.

As for industrial bands? I would imagine that Marilyn Manson has the only
readily active mailing list in the genre recently. Seeing as how the
entire scene has virtually collapsed on itself I don't see much happening.
Sorry for the bitch session, but I really miss the heyday of industrial

Date: 06 Jul 1997 23:59:59 -0600
Hello one and all...
I'm writing to let everyone know that I have basically been off-line
for the past two days. I was having major problems with my computer
and was unable to monitor or respond to recent events. In my short
absence a few problems arose. Several bounces were received, I have
forwarded most of them to the list, however, some were lost. Several
members of the mailing list sent personal emails, I promise to answer
your letters soon. I've also decided to send the "Introductory Text"
to the mailing list. Please keep this for future reference and make
special note of the "Golden Rules" - especially rules # 2 & 3 which
are often hard to follow. Thanks!
Mailing List INTRODUCTORY TEXT
*** Mailing List Formed in October 1996 ***
Administered by: 'Damian' (damian@xmission.com)
Welcome to Mobility: The unofficial Moby mailing list! This list
discusses the aspects, rumors, and issues of the music artist Moby.
It also discusses his pseudonyms (i.e., Lopez, Voodoo Child, etc.)
and the music of his record label Trophy.
Please keep this file as reference, as it contains valuable information
on the details of the subscription, in particular how to send commands
to deal with unsubscriptions.
If you ever need to retrieve another copy of this message, email
majordomo@xmission.com with the command "info mobility" in the body
of the message.
HOW TO SUBSCRIBE AND UNSUBSCRIBE
To join "mobility," send email to majordomo@xmission.com with the
command "subscribe mobility" (without quotes) in the body of the
message. You will receive a confirmation message and a copy of this
information file. Once you are subscribed, you will receive each
message as it is posted to the list.
A digest version of "mobility" is also available. If you subscribe
to the digest you will receive groups of postings in a single email
message instead of one at a time. These "digests" are sent out
whenever there is a certain amount of text in the queue. It is
usually best to try the regular version of the list first and then
switch to the digest if you are getting more mail from the regular
version that you can deal with comfortably. To subscribe to the digest,
send the command "subscribe mobility-digest" to majordomo@xmission.com
(again, with no quotes) in the body of the message.
*** Once you have subscribed, send your email to mobility@xmission.com
To leave the list, send email to majordomo@xmission.com with the command
"unsubscribe mobility" or "unsubscribe mobility-digest" (as appropriate)
in the body of the message. If you have trouble unsubscribing, send
email describing the problem in detail (what commands you sent, what
you got back if anything, etc.) to owner-mobility@xmission.com.
CHANGING FROM BOUNCE MODE TO DIGEST MODE
Should you wish to receive a digest, send a message to
majordomo@xmission.com and in the body of the message type
"unsubscribe mobility" on the first line, and then type
"subscribe mobility-digest" on the next line.
Remember: problems with your subscription should be reported
to owner-mobility@xmission.com, not to the list itself.
THE GOLDEN RULES
----------------
1. Please keep the discussion on the list confined to that
revolving around Moby, his record label Trophy, and the pseudonyms
thereof. For example, while Aphex Twin may be a great artist, most
members of the list don't really care since it's not related to Moby.
2. Please keep in mind basic netiquette when making postings to the
list. When replying to a message, try to quote only the sections of
the original message that are relevant to reply and EDIT the rest.
Avoid using excessively long signatures -- while they may look fancy
remember that people will see them on your every posting and will
start to looked tired real quick (four lines is a good size).
3. Try to keep messages relevant to the list's topic (no general
advertisements, "warnings" about viruses, chain letters, and so
forth). Polls that are being conducted should be headed by one
individual who collects the responses and publishes them to the list.
The list manager has final say on whether a topic is welcome on
the list; please do your best to follow his guidance.
4. The messages you send are going out to hundreds of other people.
Please think twice before posting flames or extremely large messages to
the list. You should *never* send graphics or audio files to the list
-- doing so may result in your subscription being canceled.
5. Do not repost messages from this list to other forums without first
getting permission from the person who wrote that message.
YOUR HOMEWORK!

I think that he did intend for that to happen; when his first album came
out it was virtually unheard of-in fact my friends & I would take the cd
into industrial clubs to get them to play it. In the past year and a half
however, he's decided to choose image over music, and sadly it shows up in
the creativity of his work (read: it sucks now).

!!!Are you serious? I thought that Scream was one of the most intelligent
horror movies of the past 10 years (along with In The Mouth Of Madness &
City Of Lost Children). The writing was amazing, the acting was superb-and
it ended with First Cool Hive ;) I was quite pleased that he lent a song
to it.
Regarding the Saint; I think that most people will agree that it was quite
a mediocre film-nothing great & nothing terrible. The soundtrack? With
the exception of Everything But The Girl & Moby, it was a fairly forced
effort. All of the "next big thing" artists are featured with their
respective "big" new tracks. Get it for the Moby song if you must (I did),
but other compilations are much, much better (Wipeout XL & The Trip Hop
Test Volume 1 come to mind).
Take care....

i've bought my stores entire moby collection and they haven't gotten my

nothing at the big stores but my friend snagged berlin for a buck at

i didn't see the movie. i've had more than enuff of u.s. action movies.
but i do own the soundtrack. moby's track "oil 1" is good, and sounds
quite moby-like, but seems to be more of an idea than a song because it
never really goes anywhere. it is very much like his lopez/dj cake
stuff on trophy in that it is highly repetetetetetetetive, but packs some
good nrg. as for the rest of the soundtrack, i didn't find anything else
on there that interested me. it is mostly all just a marketing strategy
for more commercial "electronica" artists. not that sounding commercial
is bad, but sounding cliche is. orbital's track is pretty good though.

Well, I think that because there hasn't been much moby discussion people
are kind of getting bored, and wanting to talk about other things. it's
not like it's a really high volume group so it's not getting too
unbearable yet, but if it does, that would be a problem.

The two addresses above are different but do the SAME thing. They both
send mail to the mailing list. I like to use <mobility@xmission.com>
because it is smaller. However, most everything processed by the
mailing program (including the address mobility@xmission.com) comes out
through the address <mobility@mail.xmission.com>
In turn, a message sent to <mobility@xmission.com> appears to come from
two addresses because <mobility@mail.xmission.com> is attached. This
might cause confusion and maybe we should all simply use the latter
address.
I feel that part of the problem lies within the person who reply's to a
message and doesn't watch what their email program is doing. If someone
sends a message to Mobility using the address
<mobility@mail.xmission.com>, only one address can be replied to. If
someone sends a message to Mobility using the address
<mobility@xmission.com> then both addresses will show up. Because of
this, there is a change that both addresses will be replied to causing a
DUPLICATE posting. People need to make sure that they DO NOT use the
"reply to all recipients" command when responding to an email.
I will check into getting the addresses for Mobility unified into one.
This will make it so people can't make the mistake of replying to both
addresses. Kind of a mess, I know. ):

Prodigy--Techno's Big Hope--Hits U.S.
by Marcus Errico
June 30, 1997, 6 p.m. PT
You can call it electronica, techno, rave,
trip-hop, ambient or noisy crap, just don't call
it successful. At least not yet. On Tuesday, the
record industry tries again to introduce the
American record-buying public to the concept of
British club music--supposedly the Next Big
Thing--this time pinning its hopes on Prodigy's
The Fat of the Land.
The British quartet has been on hype overdrive for
the past few months--as an inspiration for U2's
Pop makeover (Prodigy turned down a gig opening
U2's PopMart shows), a headliner on Lollapalooza
and, above all, as the torch-bearers for the
so-called electronica movement.
The music industry has been trying to pass off
this hybrid--formed around digital samples, tape
loops and drum-machines--as the best thing to hit
your ears since Nirvana and Pearl Jam made grunge
cliche. For the past year, execs have plotted the
latest British dance-music invasion (not counting
their ill-fated attempt in the early '90s when
they tried to foist bands like Utah Saints,
Messiah and Lords of Acid upon us).
But after the less-than-spectacular sales of
Moby's Animal Rights ("It's going to be one of the
biggest albums of the year," boasted an Elektra
Records publicist before its April release and
subsequent disappearance) and the Chemical
Brothers' Dig Your Own Hole (a decent debut at
number 14 but not much sustained interest), it's
up to Prodigy to prove record honchos right.
In fact, this is Prodigy's second go-round. The
band has already been dumped once by an American
label (Elektra in 1994) and remained unsigned for
almost two years, in spite of scoring a number-one
album and monster-selling singles in Britain. The
band--known for wild stage shows, thanks in part
to Bozo-haired frontman Keith Flint--was
resuscitated by MTV, which put its videos in the
Buzz Bin. Then came the bidding war and new
multimillion-dollar deal with Madonna's Maverick
records.)
Will record-buyers take to the relentless rhythms
of The Fat of the Land? Thanks to the hype, the
album should debut high on the charts (a Best Buy
exec told the Los Angeles Times that he thinks the
album will hit number 1).
However, other industry types don't think Prodigy,
or electronica, will have much staying power. "You
can't sing along with it...If you're not in a club
dancing, you can't really listen to it," confided
one record label publicist. "I don't think it will
ever catch on in a big way like disco or grunge
did."
(Here's E Online's review of Animal Rights)
Grade: C-
His last album, Everything is Wrong, established
Moby as one of technoÆs most charismatic figures.
But just as electronic music enters the
mainstream, heÆs abandoned it for guitar-based
post-punk rock. While it's certainly a perverse
move, it's not that broad a leap--both genres
thrive on intensity and aggression and are
suspicious of easy pleasures. But while Moby
appropriates the post-punk attack, he appears to
have neglected the details (and in the process,
also wasted the dynamic possibilities dance music
affords). Even his reading of Mission of Burma's
brilliant "That's When I Reach for My Revolver" is
inert. And the glacially cool instrumentals that
stud the album are nothing Eno hasn't done better
a decade ago.

First off, please stop the MM and VU talk. Second, I told you guys earlier
that I bought the Hole In My Soul single with Moby's flawed mix on it. Today
I saw a part 2 to the single. Now it has a red cover (the 1st one had black)
and one of the tracks is "Moby's F****** Mix" Does anyone have any info on
this one? Is it the same? Should I be the guinea pig and buy it? Anyway, now
question about "I like to score." Should I wait and buy the Double Tap Score
if I have all the other tracks (except JB)??? Is there going to be a
separate album for Double Tap? When is the date for ILTS?? I think I rem.
sometime in Sept. Could anyone clarify about who's collaborating with
Butthole Surfers and the Spawn stdk?? I am heraing everyone from Moby to
FSOL to Aphex Twin. I also rem. something about Moby and Filter doing

BTW, if anyone cares, my cousin had a wedding this weekend and their song
that they danced to was GMOTFOTW. It was a total shock to me. He said, "I
remember you played that for me last year at my house and I thought it would
be perfect. Are you suprised??" It was one of my happiest moments of my

p.s. Samu is Moby. Remember that vacation he said he was going on? He's

Sorry to break the bad news to you Vince, but you my friend are not the
list adminstrator. If you don't like it here you can always leave. No one
is forcing you to stay here. I belong to several lists and must say that
this list does a much better job than most. Ocasionally we do stray from

newsgroups and it was awful. I found links to pornographic sites, but no

Ok the reason for mailing lists are for people to talk about one topic..
thats why there already is a MM list.. and all your other fav bands too...
and if youre looking to meet people and join in on the singles party, im
suggest you take a walk outside and get some fresh air.. I dont mean to be
sarcastic (although i am) but a list is a place for one topic, which means
concentrating on one particular subject.. In this case that little bald guy
who makes nice music.. so if you do like to babble then maybe you can try
just private email for certain people instead of posting to the list..
Anyways i'll stop because i know i wouldnt want to keep receiving email
about this but i figured i'd say something..
anyways heres a moby thingy... DOES anyone think some of the underworld
songs sound a little like some of the Little Idiot Moby songs?? Well some
of the instruments at least.. well buh bye!

i heard the new john lydon cd yesterday. bad bad bad stuff kids, stay
away. now, i like the origional version of "open up" by leftfield and i
really like lydon's voice and stuff, but the music is really lacking here.
moby's remix is pretty worthless. i guess even the greats like the
chemical brothers (who also do a remix) and moby can't do anything with
this dribble.
so, it's not worth buying just for the moby mix.
what IS worth buying is the single for "the damage i've done" by the heads.
moby does two completly different remixes, a "deep melodic" house mix and
a "sad gospel" (sp?) almost ambient mix. both pack that quiet energy and
uplifting yet sad feel that i always love in moby's better music. go get
it now!

I also remember reading about Moe Tucker in what was I'm pretty
sure Rolling Stone, and I could swear hearing she hasa new album coming...I
did extensive research on Tucker (outside of being a vu fan) for a term
paper on lesser known female musicians.
Like others have mentioned I too LOVE pop/contemporary art. Right
now I am a summer intern at the Wadsworth Atheneum (it's an art museum in
Hartford, CT) so I get to speng my days with *3* Warhols (a large size
Jackie O, Triple Silver Disaster, and Camoflage Self Portrait which is in
the main gallery and was done a year before his death) and at least one
Lichtenstein (BLang! a large oil-and-magna of a gun firing at a tank). I
also love Keith Haring but far and away my favorite artist is Barbara
Kruger. She rocks! Especially because so many of her images have made it
to a mainstream audience (examples being a postcard of 'I shop therefore I
am' in Heather Chandler's locker in the movie 'Heathers' and the boys of
RATM running around LA putting up posters of 'Who Laughs Last?' among
others in their video for 'Bulls On Parade') Anyway she is definitely my
fave, because of not only her images themselves but the thought-provoking
words that accompany them.
To get back into a semi-Moby (but not quite) vein, I think
Negativespace (the people who do the design for the Chemical Brothers among
others ) are fanstastic. Even if I didn't like the Chem Brothers I would
have seriously bought the disc by virtue of its design which is just
marvelous. I just read a little articel about them in the new SPin (which
also includes a dead-on article about the downward spiral whihc is MTV, in
which they herald 'electronic' music as the future of videos. Damn
straight!)
Ok, ok I'm really going on but one last thing: is there a way to
subscribe to the Chem Brothers list in a *digest* form?

You can listen to samples from the Spawn soundtrack, including the
Butthole Surfers/Moby song, at
http://www.music.sony.com/Music/ArtistInfo/Spawn/
The song is laid back and sort of trippy, but the 30 seconds I heard
didn't impress me very much. Maybe the whole song will be better.

Hello,
I am writing to try and clear up what IS and what IS NOT acceptable on
the MOBILITY mailing list. This is basically rehash because the rules
are outlined in the "Introductory Text" sent to each new subscriber.
This text was just sent out last Sunday as a reminder of what this list
is about. So, I'm surprised that I need to be writing this at all.
Here is an edited version of the "Introductory Text" that should answer
everyone's questions:
> Welcome to Mobility: The unofficial Moby mailing list! This list
> discusses the aspects, rumors, and issues of the music artist Moby.
> It also discusses his pseudonyms (i.e., Lopez, Voodoo Child, etc.)
> and the music of his record label Trophy.
>
>
I have read all of the emails regarding the "welcome to mobility?"
post. Everyone has been reasonable and I understand what is being
said. But in the end (and to be frank), off-topic posts are NOT
welcome. Obviously, it's easy to see how things can stray and I don't
mind... it just happens sometimes. However, I feel that everyone on
this list has a responsibility to move their discussions elsewhere if
the conversation has gone astray.
All in all, virtually every post seen on this list needs to be related
to Moby in one way or the other. Straying off-topic is
understandable... staying off-topic is not. This mailing list can,
will, and has maintained a sense of identity and community without have
to deal with a high noise ratio.
I encourage anyone and everyone to write me personally if they feel
strongly about what I've said -- whether it's positive or negative. I
believe I've learned to be more lenient since starting this mailing
list. Nevertheless, I don't want to put myself and others at an
inconvenience because this list can't maintain a sense of direction.
Everyone's cooperation in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Ok. This is getting retarded.
If you've got a mountain of Moby input to put forth, please do so-up until
this point I haven't seen it from you. A artist list cannot sustain itself
solely on it's subject; especially one as fragmented as Mobility. Most of
us are intelligent people who enjoy listening to what each other has to say
regarding Moby, and somewhat related topics. I haven't seen any thread on
the list that's gotten too out of hand without being taken to private mail,
so please-lighten up.

OK, with all the fighting going on I'd to share with you something
positive. It's a chronilogical list of how I first got into Moby.
Enjoy.
March 7,1991 - 94.5 the edge in Dallas begins a live mix show called
Edge Club 94 every Saturday night. I listen religiously.
Oct.1991 - The Rainforest Mix of Go is being played on the show every
week. This is the first Moby track I heard. It gets my
attention because of the Tones on Tail sample.
Dec.1991 - I begin searching for Moby records and find Go,Voodoo Child,
and the UHF 12"
Jan.1992 - Listen to interview on Edge Club 94 with Moby and find him
fascinating. On Jan 30 I win tickets to the Shaman show
with Moby opening.
The rest as they say is history

I was the one who said the thing about Moby and Filter. I heard on
Q101's Music News that Moby and Filter might collaborate for a
soundtrack. Maybe originally they were supposed to be teamed up
for the Spawn soundtrack.
Filter is on it, but with The Crystal Method, not Moby. I've heard
the Filter/TCM song on the radio. The second half is really good.

Wow!!! I'm shocked at the impressive line up not to mention the (dare I
say?) duets. I'm looking forward to this soundtrack...
I wasn't too impressed with the 30 second sample either... but it did
sound progressive or at least different - that should be a good thing.

the CD single i have for "go" says that the car company ripped=20

i liked that cookie idea. that's just about the only thing that dosen't=20

Maybe I could get Moby to endorse my cookies....

samples(.ra, .wav, and the like) for stuff like webpages and Windoze69.
I'm going to do some major updating to the music part of my
page...going to scan cd covers..would also like to add audio
samples...Looking for something along the lines of free/shareware..Look
at it this way..it's Moby related..I'm going to include samples from

Yes Eric, the AR live promo is rare. I wouldn't mind owning the thing.
AFAIK, the live tracks below are not offered on anything else. The
"Come On Baby" single offered some live tracks from the recording at The
Splash Club but not in limited and exclusive release like those offered
in the promo.
As for the Cnotes promotion... I'm extremely disappointed at whole
process. Samu, since you got your _Reverence_ CD's, I should be getting
mine soon too. However, what has happened to the _Animal Rights_ CD's!
Gads, the Moby promotion started before Faithless and its been five
months now. And for those interested in participating... forget it...
the promotion is over with and the five month wait isn't worth it.
ANIMAL RIGHTS: LIVE AT THE SPLASH CLUB (17:32) [1996]
UK CD, Mute, PCDStumm150
NOTE: People attending Moby's European headline tour receive this
disc for free, while supplies last. All tracks were recorded
live at the Splash Club (UK) on July 11, 1996.

I have it, and it's a nice addition to your Moby collection. It's nice because
it has the track Shining (I believe that track is on the UK version of BBMH,
not sure though) and that's the main reason I bought it.
It also has two full length music videos for your computer. Hymn (This is my
dream) and ETYTM (Beatmasters mix or whatever they call it :)
Very cool! Well worth the money (compared to imported singles..)

it also includes make your own remix section (it is crappy, but anyways) and
lot of Moby's interviews. And i almost forgot, it also includes some video
clips of Move. well disk is worth of money..
btw, i got that ar live promo yesterday, Moby really fucks those songs, i
mean really. he plays all so fast and fast. and he sings like an asshole.
i also david bowie's dead man walking vinyl, it rocks!. it only includes
those 2 moby mixes, i bought it 10$ (on your money) from my local record
store. worth it!

the regular Moby Disk is the ecd. (cd audio on session 1 and cdrom
data on session 2) the mpc version has data on session 1. it was
made for older cdroms that can't read multi-session disks (ecd's).
that probably doesn't mean alot to you unless you know a lot about
cdroms. but the mpc version may or may not have the cd audio on it i
don't know, i've never seen it. if it does it would have to start on
track 2. so... only get the mpc version if your cdrom won't play the
regular one. well i tried to explain it as best i can, hope i didn't
just confuse you more.

Yes, they said that anyone linking to Elektra's Moby page would get two
free copies of Animal Rights. This was a really, really bad promotion.
Hey, Elektra! Ahem. Most people who participated in this promotion
were probably Moby fans, who really were looking forward to getting his
new album ASAP. If I would have known what an extremely low priority
it was/is to deliver on your end, I wouldn't have participated, and
would
have instead paid for my US AR CD the day it came out (February 11th).
You talk the talk but won't walk the walk. I think it was exactly six
months ago that I joined this bogus promotion (I had already linked to
Elektra's Moby page more than a year prior to this). I *still* don't
have the US release version of AR, because I've been expecting these
two free copies that were promised in January. Fellow Moby fans have
either finally bought the album in exasperation, months after its much
anticipated release, or are still waiting. Maybe some have gotten
bored & given up on Moby. That's a great way to leave those of us who
discuss and promote Moby on the web. Oh well...
My 2 cents: Moby should have stayed on Instinct.

Hey Daniel!!! It's good to hear from you again. I'm glad I'm not alone
in my disappointment with how CNotes and Elektra followed through on
this promotion. I figure it's more Elektra's fault than anything
because they have full control over how the CD's are released. At the
same time I had my reservations because it was almost too good to be
true. I figured they would delay sending out the CD's just so there
sales wouldn't be damaged but five/six months later is ridiculous.
I wonder how Moby feels about his record deal with Elektra. I know the
label pretty much sucked when it came to handling their contract with
Erasure (another group I love). It seems like Elektra insists on great
sales or they will drop you or withdraw their support fast. Then again,
they're releasing "The End of Everything" which confuses me to no end.
Is this really going to be released under Voodoo Child instead of
Moby???
p.s. Can anyone tell me where I can find a search engine for locating
various DLL's? Or a huge site full of them? Any help or suggestions
would be greatly appreciated. Please reply to me personally on this
matter. Thanks!

Well, I finally received it and I like it!!!
It has both audio and video. If there is a difference between buying the MPC
and regular Moby Disk I have no idea what it is. The version that I got
makes no reference to this. It doesn't even have the letters MPC anywhere on
the CD.
A word of caution: it may not work on NEC CD Rom drives. I don't remember who
it was, but somebody posted that their CD Rom was an NEC clone. I don't
think that buying the MPC version will improve your chances that you will be
able to run this program. I would advise you against purchasing this
product.

actually it will. the mpc version is a regular ibm formatted cdrom
disc and not an enhanced cd. if your cdrom will read anything it will
read the mpc version.

Yes, the delay sucks, I know. I was shocked to see that the last digest
had a half months worth of postings clumped all together! Sadly, this
is a problem that I have no control over. The majordomo setup that this
list operates off of is messed up in that area.
I will harass my ISP about the problem. Hopefully we will get results
soon. Please hang in there. ):

i believe majordomo has digests set up so that they send out after a
certain number of messages has come in or a certain size has been reached.
so it would actually be list traffic that determined the frequency of the
digests. a guess since the majordomo list i co-moderate doesn't operate a
digest so i'm a bit unfamiliar with the process. i really do think that
this list is optimal for subscription to the actual list and not the
digest, so if any of my suspicions be remotely correct, then this'd be
your best bet. meanwhile, you just slip in ambient and sleep a restful
night....

noticed that at www.cnotes.com they have changed the promotion quite a
bit.. now you click on a link of a certain band/album and you email them
and then they email you back with info on the band/album and you are
entered to win one of 25 copies of the album
also while i was digging through the local tower about a week ago I
noticed that Rykodisc (at least in the US) has re-released all the old
Mission of Burma CDs.. including the one with the original TWIRFMR...
forgot the album title but you will find it

It would make more sense if Elektra/Moby chose to include bonus tracks.
I don't see who will be buying this release except for those who already
have the import and maybe a few others (and yes, I do love this album,
I'm not knocking it). I haven't seen any promotion for this album...
I'm actually happy to hear that a fax has been sent out about it.
I just had a somewhat scary thought... what if the bonus tracks are the
remixes for "Dog Heaven" or the additional tracks from the "Little
Idiot" CD that didn't make it onto the domestic release of Animal
Rights??? Regardless, I'll be buying this CD when it comes out.
As for the release date, I haven't heard anything that would be
different from July 29. BTW, has anyone participated in the "Moby
Bulletin Board" that Elektra (
http://www.elektra.com/ambient_club/moby/moby.html ) has on Moby's web
site? This is silly but... I've never noticed it before, then again, I
don't visit it all too often. And no, Elektra hasn't made any changes
to the web site reflecting the forthcoming release of "The End Of
Everything" - surprise, surprise. I do have to give them credit for
giving him a somewhat prominent showing on their small "ambient/dance"
index page.

Subject: (mobility) 'ello

i like the "welcome to mobility" thing... so I am gonna introduce myself,
so here it goes.
My name is Erik (e) and I am 21
I am fairly new to the music of Moby... but I am quickly finding out that
nameless stuff I have liked in the past was indeed some of his work,
which is very exciting.
I must admit, finding my taste in Moby was pretty much an accident.
Several years ago, I was played something that was supposedly Moby's that
I didn't like, so I have always been a little cautious, now I am thinking
that it wasn't him at all. Recently, a friend of mine loaned me the Joy
Division Tribute CD, and I quickly decided that Moby's cover of New Dawn
Fades was the best JD cover I had ever heard, and overall, simply
incredible.
I also quickly realized that I had heard this song before, in the movie
Heat. So, I eventually grabbed the soundtrack to Heat seeing that there
were to Moby tracks on it, as well as some other somewhat desireable
extras. Unfortunatly, I found out that the one song I was really anxious
to own was very EDITED! So, you can guess what the next CD I bought was
:-)
Anyways, it was the last track on the Heat soundtrack that hooked me.
"God Moving Over the Face of the Waters" is just simply amazing. I have
found it very soothing sleep music (litierally leaving it on reapeat all
night long)
So, after that little shock to myself, I convinced myself to give Moby
his deserved go. So, to play it safe, I picked up "Everythign is Wrong."
Which pretty much had me hooked. I found myself playing it excessivly,
and gather tidbits of info about Moby... finding out that I like him more
and more every day. I recently added "disc" and the DJ mix album of EIW
to my small collection, and when I get paid friday... I am looking to
expand it further (any suggestions would be great)
So, I am becoming a big fan rather fast - after gathering a little more
background info, I find out that a little bit of Moby has been around a
lot of bits of music that I like.
Anyways.. as for other music I am into, Meat Beat, Consolidated and >1
(GTO) come to mind immediatly - I am actually the list manager of
DataFlow, the >1 list :-) So I can appreciate this list too
anyways... thats about it...
time to play more music

Yes, picking up "Everything Is Wrong" first is your best bet. I think
it is the best way to both show people how great Moby is and also warn
them how diverse Moby's music can be. From that album, you have to
decide what you liked most about it and go from there.
For example, if you liked the songs: HYMN - GOD MOVING OVER THE FACE OF
THE WATERS - WHEN IT'S COLD I'D LIKE TO DIE - INTO THE BLUE...
Then you should get the album "The End of Everything" by his alter ego
Voodoo Child. The album is simplistic but beautiful. The US release of
this album is suppose to come out today (JULY 29). He also has earlier
album titled "Ambient" which is exactly that, ambient. However, I don't
listen to this one that often.
If you enjoy the techno/electronic songs: FEELING SO REAL - EVERYTIME
YOU TOUCH ME - BRING BACK MY HAPPINESS...
Then you should get "RARE: The collected B-sides (1989-1993)" or the
"Move EP".
If you like his harder stuff: ALL THAT I NEED IS TO BE LOVED - WHAT LOVE
Then you should get the album "Animal Rights". This album has his
hardest material and could be called punk rock. There are two very
different releases of this album, the UK & US versions. Check out the
info and track listings at the following URL's:

I started out with "Everything Is Wrong", and have got "Move" and "Rare"

Child, but I saw the "rare" disc today, so I may pick that up at the same

early underground is too repetetive for me.
moby's a bit better, but still not enough variation.
i'd go with ambient. it was never really liked by moby (or many others)
but is one of my favorite album because alot of the songs are incomplete
and ruff around the edges.

I just got my copy of the US release of Voodoo Child | Moby: _The End
of Everything_. It bears a small sticker on the wrapping that says
"VOODOO CHILD IS MOBY" and "Features music not found on the UK
release!". Unlike the UK release, the cover picture takes up the whole
cover, and is more zoomed in. The tray or whatever you call it that the
disc rests in is black, instead of white like the UK release. The track
listing is the same as Xaq reported yesterday. Here is the discog info:
THE END OF EVERYTHING (66:19) [Voodoo Child | Moby, 29 Jul 1997]
US CD, Elektra, 62092-2
1 9:50 Patient Love
2 8:58 Great Lake
3 8:17 Gentle Love
4 7:27 Honest Love
5 7:07 Slow Motion Suicide
6 6:03 Dog Heaven
7 18:25 Reject
I'm starting to listen to it now, and it seems that the tracks are
different. "Dog Heaven" is a new version that was neither released on
the UK EOE album nor the _Dog Heaven_ single. "Honest Love" has a new
and longer ending that is absolutely wonderful! "Reject" is the same
long track that appeared on the _Little Idiot_ UK AR bonus disc.
"Animal Sight" is missing from this US release, but it was my least
favorite track from the UK release anyway, so it's no huge loss.
Overall, I still like the old UK version better (its "Dog Heaven" is
superior), but this new release is very good and I recommend it.
Nowhere else will you find such beautiful, honest, simple, and emotional
music as on _The End of Everything_.

which is odd 'cause i think that's probably the worst thing i've ever
heard moby do.
to each their own, i guess...
i'd say the soundtrack is 50-50. it's too rocky and not enough dancy. you
know that the only reason this soundtrack exists is to make money. none of
the pairings worked as well as they should have. it all sounds really
forced and very un-inspired.
i like the metallica/dj spooky and obital/hammet songs. i'm a big manson
(not mansun) fan, and that track is also one of their worst.
i now wish i hadn't bought it, but i'll probably get a few more listens
out of it before it retires to the pile under the shelf where all my old
CD's go to die.

Well I didnt think I'd actually hear the end of everything on my local
college station. But today they shocked me and played Dog Heaven (the
newer version). It was wierd because before they had played some crappy
sounding song that was really annoying me and then they popped on Dog
Heaven and suddenly driving to work was much more easier :)
And the dj guy tried to give moby info as he said "ya know just in case you
care, voodoo child is moby. Maybe I'll play some more moby in an hour."
an hour! sheesh traffic isnt that bad!
Anyways im gonna buy the Spawn thingy regardless of what ive heard. I did
hear the Hammet/Orbital one.. what i briefly heard reminded me of Fluke's
Atom Bomb.. well at least the part that Orbital was playing.
Well ive babbled enough, toodles

No. There are five different versions of "Dog Heaven": The three
that are on the single (Lopez Mix, Extended Mix, Long Mix), the UK
EOE version, and the new US EOE version. The latter sounds like it
is based on the Long Mix, but edited down considerably, with more
echoing added. The original (UK EOE) version is still my favorite,
followed by the Long Mix.

Yes, it says V O O D O O C H I L D | M O B Y on both the front and
the spine. The back also says "Written and Produced by Moby". I guess
that Elektra really wants the world to know that Voodoo Child is Moby,
so they just couldn't leave it as "Voodoo Child" with a sticker on it.
Sheesh.

I picked it up from Tower - it was in there "Techno/Dance/etc" section.
They had quite a few copies.

I haven't heard it-but a friend tells me that the Moby song is alright-but
quite mellow-and the real standout was Stabbing Westward & Wink....Any
thoughts?

oh no!! i HATE the stabbing westward song! i didnt even put it on the
tape i made for the car. it sounds like the 2 artists created the songs
separately and then played em back at the same time!
i *do* like tiny rubberband, altho it is more bhs-ish than moby; its
something different atleast.
wasnt too impressed by tom morello, at least not as i thought id be.
my favorite? satan! that song makes me wanna kill someone and paint a
star on their forehead! (that was a JOKE) seriously though, what a crazy
song.
well thats my 2cents on spawn..

I agree. The Westward/Wink song is my favorite too. It is very
catchy and it's got some cool 303 (acid) noises.

WARNING - This is babble-material, and may put you to sleep.
Well today i got the spawn thingy, and its not the greatest soundtrack..
The Saint had better songs, but still there are some cool songs.
The Filter/Crystal Method, Manson/Pimps, Orbital/Hammett, Korn/Dust Bros.,
Stabbing/Wink, Prodigy/Morello, Rollins/Goldie are good and decent songs..
i could listen to them again..
on the other hand Metallica/Spooky, Butt dudes/Moby, Mansun/808,
Silverchair/Vitro, Incubus/Greyboy, Slayer/Atari, Soul Coughing/Roni Size
were the ones i really didnt care for..
I really was kinda disappointed with the Moby track.. the first 5 seconds i
thought it was gonna be a cool song but then that damn butthole started
singing. and the rest was unrecognizable moby drum stuff.. no cool sounds
and whatnot from the mobyster. I dont know maybe i need to hear it more,
but i think Moby was stuck with the wrong band.
I think i liked the Orbital and the Stabbing tracks the most..
The Stabbing/Wink track though was horribly recorded or something like
that.. it sounded as if Chris Hall was singing in a bathroom with his mic
turned up too high..
although the wink stuff in the beginning and the drums i couldve listened
to for an hour.. i love that stuff.. If u havent heard any of Winks early
stuff u should give it a listen, some nice stuff..
and last and certainly least..
whats up w/Atari Teenage Riot? isnt that a song they used in their album? I
mean i know it probably isnt but the damn programmed beats were so alike..
sometimes I wonder how hard it might be to scream one liners and push knobs
on a box to make their music.. just my opinion though.. i used to like them
when they first came out..
well i think ive babbled enough.
I think maybe the Spawn sdtrk wouldve been more suited for a soundtrack
similar to the Crow, instead of this media stunt, with tag team music. but
hey whatever gets us to buy it right..
but all i know is i wish i could have my eyes glow green like Spawn ;)
toodles
Eric
