I first heard/saw Moby at the 1995 ENIT fest in Los Angeles, he was =
deejaying and that music was just about perfect for that environment. It =
was love at first sight and still one the best shows i can remember.

So I am sitting here at my desk and I am thinking that I cannot wait until
Moby puts out a new album.  Whenever that will be.  And I am thinking about
who I would like to hear collaborate with Moby on it.  I know this has been
discussed here on this list before.  Anyway, lately I have been listening to
Delerium.  A lot of Delerium.  Kristy Thirsk has worked with Delerium on a
few of their songs.  I think if she and Moby were to collaborate on a song
it would turn out great.

Aphex Twin announces new 30-track double LP 'DrukQs'


Aphex Twin has announced details of 'DrukQs', his first new LP for five
years. According to Warp Records web-site the 30-track double LP was
mastered in London last week. No release date has been confirmed but Warp
said the LP should be available by Oct.

A source close to Aphex/Warp said: "The new LP is amazing. It sounds like
Aphex Twin - a lot of the tracks could have been recorded at any point over
the last 10 years. Some of them might have been sitting in his vaults for
years, definitely one or two of them have been in his DJ sets for the last
two years. But it is a stunning record - it's everything Warp have ever
wanted."

Aphex's last LP was 1996's 'Richard D James' LP. His last release was Mar
99's 'Windowlicker' single. One track that is presumed to come from the new
LP 'Finnlebuk' is available as a free MP3 download at unofficial Aphex Twin
fan-site www.joyrex.com.




Future Sound of London comeback with Beefheart and Donovan


FSOL have announced details of their first new material since 1996 LP 'Dead
Cities'. Future Sound of London's (FSOL) Gary Cobain has told 7 magazine
that FSOL are working on a new LP with contributions from legendary 60s
folk-singer Donovan, Captain Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas, sitar player
Baluji Shrivastav and sometime Oasis Hammond organ player Mikey Ro.

Cobain described the new LP as a 'rock psychedelic spiritual electronic LP'
and said it was influenced by his interests in yoga, alternative therapies
and female energy. He also said that FSOL had worked on 11-hours worth of a
new radio project titled 'Mello Hippo Disco Radio Show' which mixes
psychedelic music, effects, samples and contributions from Lucas.

Cobain said: "The show is about putting back into the cosmos all the music
that has inspired us - it goes from James Last and bird-song to full on
ragas."

FSOL are currently in discussion with several radio stations to arrange
syndication of the shows. FSOL have also promised to release some new music
before the end of the year. Cobain will be previewing new material in a
rare DJ set at The Big Chill Festival at Lulworth Castle, Aug 17-19.

i was at area: one - atlanta last night.

we got to the venue about 30 min before moby took stage.  the show was
awesome!!  i just wish it had been a little longer.  the performance was in
par with all other performances i've seen by him.  the only exception... the
light show was definitely the best i've seen out of moby.  great job!!!

Tower's Pulse Magazine for July has an ad for it releasing July 10th with a
$19.99 sale price, and a regular retail of $24.99.

I haven't bought it yet, so I can't confirm, but that looks pretty solid for

hi everyone, here's something i posted to the boards about atlanta yesterday.

(This is gonna be kinda long!)
Hey guys!! The festival was great. It was so much fun! I had a superb time.
Here's who I saw:
Rinocerose
The Roots
Incubus
Outkast
Mobes

Rinocerose---- SEE THEM SEE THEM SEE THEM SEE THEM!!! They are AMAZING. It was so
cute too, because all they said was "Thank you" and then at the end "Byebye" with
a heavy French accent. Anyway, a great set Like.. guitar rock french house
cheese. That doesnt sound like the best, does it? But it is, oh, it is. They're
second on the line up so the tent was pretty roomy (Nelly Furtado opposing on the
main stage, plus in the afternoon on a weekday). I was right in front and loved
those Frenchies all the way.

Speaking of the tent, it's pretty nice. It was kind of funny seeing the
rave-afied Ford logo on a hanging screen, but you gotta do what you gotta do, I
guess! The only concern is that it got really popular with Cox, Oakie, and May,
and not everyone could get in, and they were getting a little annoyed. I'm
worried about what it's going to be like at shows with more of a dance crowd. I'm
sure they'll work everything out. Oh, I forgot to mention that during Rinocerose,
we saw both Oakenfold and Cox backstage, and Oakie smiled and waved at us who saw
him (like 4 of us). That was cool. :-)

Then I caught the end of the Roots at the main stage. Kelis came on and did the
"Uh" song and the "I HATE YOU--SOMUCHRIGHTNOW!" song. :-) It was a nice vibe on a
nice day. While we were watching, we noticed all of the Rinocerose guys walking
past us. I quickly started to try to remember my French so I could go up and say
how much their set blew me over, but by the time I came up with something, they
were gone. We were walking to another area when we ended up right behind said
guys, all over again. I tapped the lead guitar player on the shoulder, whom we
were in front of the whole time during their set (there are three guitarists...
so incredibly cool...), he turned around and looked surprised, we shook hands as
he recognized my friend and me and said with a heavy accent, "Oh yes! I saw you -
front row!" and I sputtered out, "Je l'aime, beacoup. ...oui?" (Basically: 'I
like it very much. Yes?' I was trying to say I liked the music!) He said Thank
you and smiled, I said "Merci" and said bye. That was spiffy.

Onto Incubus. I was tired. I had run out of water, I hadn't eaten anything except
a few pieces of toast in a day, and I knew that I had Outkast and Mobes coming
up. So instead of checking out Cox at the tent, I chilled at the mainstage while
Incubus was up.

One cool thing was that, for some reason, the upper level covered seating was a
free-for-all. There wasn't anyone stationed at the stairs, so we just walked up
and found open seats. Come to think of it, even though I had lawn seats, I don't
think I even stepped foot on it. (Now I feel kinda bad..) Eventually I got kicked
out of my Incubus seat and moved. Incubus was, well, it was Incubus. The crowd
liked them a lot. I got a 5-dollar chicken sandwhich.

OUTKAST up next!!!!! WOW!!!!! We sneaked up pretty far under the covered seating
and had some nice seats. For those of you who dont know, Atlanta is Outkast
territory. The crowed LOVED them; the vibe was excellent. Everyone was dancing,
shoulder to shoulder, who cares if there were seats?? People were standing on
them, jumping over them, sitting on railings.. It was a great time. We noticed
the Area One camera go by a few times. (Digital, I think.) Outkast ended with
B.O.B. and just tore everything up. We were treated so well, man, to hear
everyone singing along with every song.. it was just.. wow. I feel so lucky to
have seen them in ATL!

Ok, I'll finally talk about Mobes. His set was about 80 minutes, I think. Here's
what he played, according to the setlist (and my notes as requested by you
guys)...I'll put in the song titles in parenthesis:

No Spinbad - it was RJ the London DJ instead. I'm not quite sure why.

The stage has STAIRS! For those of you who have seen Mobes live, you know he's
all over the place as it is.. Add into that stairs.. My goodness.

Greta kicks ass.

Mo was wearing an Outkast shirt. Awww yeah! And he kept kicking the beach balls
back out into the audience. I was down by the stage later and my gawd there were
a lot of busted beach balls.

The LIGHTS!! The lights at Moby's previous club shows were *phenomenal*, but I
was worried that they were going to get lost in an ampitheater setting. Not
quite-- they switched backgrounds, added lasers-- still just an amazing light
show! Dan is the MAN.

Southside was indeed w/Nelly Furtado, and it was pretty nice. It was the first
time I'd heard it live, after wanting to hear it when he was on his UK Play tour
(before the Gwen single came out). So yay, that was very cool.

I noticed the cam during the perf as well, and I can't WAIT for some sort of
footage to come out!

Of course, the actual perf was high energy, lovely, I was surrounded by people
dancing and singing and having fun, it was just so wonderful. I've been to three
(!) Moby shows now and I've never had a bad experience. Even though there were
seats and variety of people that some may think wouldn't mesh, everyone was
lovely and happy and together.

Ok, I think that's about it. I'm so happy that there was a great vibe, at least
where I was. And it's just.. wow, I mean, look at who I saw. All of that in ONE
day! I'm so thankful that Mobes put this together. It was really quite beautiful.
And definitely worth the trip to Atlanta. I hope that they're able to continue
it; I feel like only good could come of it.

Ok. Wow, you've made it far. Sorry this is so long, I can't help but gush, I had
SO MUCH FREAKING FUN. I hope all you guys have as good a time as I did. If you
have any questions about logistics or specifics, lemme know.

ps-Much to a lot you guy's amazement, I didnt catch Cox or Oakie or May due to
logistics, but my friend Rob did and he said that both Cox and Oakie just tore it
up; they were amazing.  Word of caution though, the tent was barely big enough
for the small dance crowd in ATL. If you're going to a show where they will have
more of a following, and you want to catch the whole set, definitely try to get
in the tent about 15 or 20 minutes before start time, because it looked like they
were letting a line build up outside the tent and then letting a gaggle of people
in, and people were getting *pissed*.  Rob waited 30 minutes for Oakenfold, and
who knows what that's gonna be like in other cities.  Also, they had May up
against Mo, and May was still going after Mo ended his set, but they werent
letting anyone new into the tent! Bastards.  And come midnight, they cleared the
place out.

Couldn't agree more. They were one of the highlights of Glasonbury last
year. Their album is excellent too (on V2 in the UK). They make all of these
house tracks almost exclusive with guitars. The beats are added later when
they've developed the textures. Oh... and one of the guys is a scooter
freak, a total mod. which is cool.

I love that song. Kelis was really good at Glastonbury aswell. The band were

Was he picking up rubbish off the stage and counting the stairs? obsessive
compulsive that he seems to be! And has he lost the extra weight he was

If it was anything like the Wembley show last year then I know it was
incredible. The irony is though that Moby's early European shows were at
these mega raves, bigger than yer average ampi-theatre. so he's always
understood the importance of the visuals at a large venue. this is why he
preferred to hire a lighting engineer over a tour manager in the beginning.

PS I would be interested to see what people think of the Jools Holland Show
performance. I thought it was very dull... totally lackluster. Moby seemed
unsure of himself, ill at ease with the cameras and an audience (myself
included) who seemed to be in a different room - so flat was the atmosphere=
.
When he did 'Hymn' at the recording there was loads of feedback from the mi=
c
so he was forced to stop. funnily enough it kinda loosened him up a bit, bu=
t
he still seemed a bit uptight. even stranger, given that this was a kind of
'unplugged' performance, the older rave-style tracks came over best... the
audience even started dancing!
oh well, one duff gig out of all the times I've seen him ain't bad. if ther=
e
was any justice though they would put out Moby's performance of 'Into the
Blue' (with Mimi on vox) on Jools Holland's Later a few years ago... pure
poetry, an astounding performance.

i agree completely the show was amazing, moby was by far the best
performance.  your right about the tent though, it took me about twenty

hi all,
just been sent the finished DVD - it rocks. the cover is a two tone image of
the Play cover with graphics in silver. there's a really nice poster with
loads of images taken from gigs/ videos etc. 2 discs. one with the mix on it
which is excellent, if a bit starved on any big surprises. the a/v content
is at its best on the 'give an idiot a camcorder' bit, which is really
funny. i've got some of moby's other film work which has always seemed a bit
too indulgent, but this is is really nice. its very focussed around the
subject, humorous, informative and basically includes some really nice
footage. i can just imagine moby slaving over a hot laptop editing the film.
the videos you probably all know. i'm not a fan of all of them (especially
bodyrock) but its nice to have them all together - i can get rid of the
tapes now!
the jools holland footage is OK. anyone who read my previous post on this
subject will realise that i didn't really like this performance. there are
better tv performances by moby, but i figure the fact that this one had a
string section, a grand piano and numerous acoustic sections it is probably
closer to moby's heart right now.
just a thought - how come, every time an artists gets some kind of success,
they suddenly have to employ a string section? like their creativity has
always been impaired by the lack of violins in the past. given the sheer
majesty of 'hymn' i don't think that moby really needs the 'real' thing.
anyway, a lovely dvd - glad they didn't put the megamix out as a limeted
package with another reissued play though?
who hold's the record for multi-format reissuing of the same product?

that its selling well in the States. That story about mobes saying sorry for

What is Hello magazine?  Anyway I was in a Virgin Megastore in
Orange, CA and they had your Moby book sitting on one of the middle
displays (so you don't have to go searching for it).  The last time I
had gone there a couple of months earlier I couldn't even find the
book!

Oh and the Play DVD seems to be in the Best Buy advertisement for
this week (I saw it on their weekly ad online - at least for my
area).

Thanks for those reviews.  I wanted to see Rinocerose, but now I've made up my mind to see them when they come to SF (or near us).

Okay, well, I'm still hurting from the Coachella Festival & I was wondering:
1) Are the performers coming on at the time announced?  Or is anyone coming on late & pushing everyone back?

2) Are the 2 tents conflicting a lot?  Like do you have to miss a lot of what's going on on the Main Stage to see who's in the Second Stage.  If anyone has the time / typing ability, I'd like to know any helpful details.

I'm just fearing the possibility that I may be forced to miss Moby because of the Orb or New Order (the latter 2 that - I know - have yet to perform on the tour).

Okay...I should go relax, do some yoga...

Area One is a ripoff for what it is being advertisd as.
The stupid second stage at Jones Beach was basically a tent that only
holds 500 people...so the rest of the people that wanted to see the Dj's
were screwed.  Or they could wait in line for 3 hours and miss all the
main acts trying to get into the tent.  It is terrible how they promote
it to a point to where you think you could actually see most of the
artists.

I went to the mall after dinner and discovered that the
media merchant had his copies of MOBYPLAY the dvd ready to
stock and convinved the merchant to sell me the dvd about 16
hours early.

I am exceptionally pleased with the programme. I have a
couple of minor quibbles.... Mainly, the disinclusion of the
video for "Southside" (and the american "Bodyrock" video),
but I'm sure they had good reasons for leaving it off. And
American buyers aren't treated to the megamix on audio cd as
well as dvd. This mix is a treat, let me tell you. very well
conceived and executed and the visual elements are an
excellent video counterpoint.

I've not yet watched the "Give an Idiot a Camcorder" short
or the segments with Jools Holland, but given the quality of
the rest of the disc, i expect to be greatly pleased by
these parts of the programme.

be hard to convert the audio from the DVD to a regular CD...
  Which site can you get the 2 disc version?  I have a region free dvd
player, so that part won't be a problem.

I understand that it's a high price. I haven't been watching Moby auctions
for over 6 months, but the last EIW + Underwater auction I saw, about a year
ago, closed at $78 or so. $25 is the least I'm willing to part with it for,
so that's the opening bid. I guess it's a take it or leave it thing, since
it's only worth what somebody is willing to pay for it.

Aargh, I can't believe you are going to part with this!  Oh, and it's not

It means that I have no home very soon and I need to rent an apartment.
Also, I finally took driving lessons and learned to drive, so I have to buy
a car next week. I am in a very bad way right now, moneywise.

As for the records, I'm still thinking about those. Moby auctions aren't
very hot right now, even with Area One going. I'm just taking requests on
records right now, but those I love even more than my Moby CDs.

Had the chance to watch the DVD in full tonight and some thoughts:

There are actually FOUR "Bodyrock" videos that I have now. The two on here,
the best one (the magic glasses one, why isn't this one on here???) and
another one I got on AMP which is the dance auditions but has a different
beginning and ending plus has some graphics running in the lower right
corner that this one does not.

I don't understand why the "Southside" video is not on here, can someone
explain that to me?

The videos are great to have, I really like the original "Porcelain", very
beautiful video and love the Little Idiot vids. "Why Does My Heart" always
choked me up, that video is sad!!!

LOVE the Give An Idiot... documentary. He is so good with his fake accents,
damn the "cultural festival" French guy had me rolling. And who can't love
FISH????
Wish this thing was longer it's so funny.

My MAJOR gripe with this (other than lack of the best version of "Bodyrock"
vid and "Southside" vid) is the lack of live footage. SO MUCH MORE could
have been done with this DVD, why not a whole "Play" tour show instead of
the partial Jools Holland performance or even in addition to? He is so good
live, very disappointing not to have concert performances on here, what I
wouldn't give to have on DVD performances of "Machete", "Sky Is Broken"
etc. And there's none of his manic energy onstage on Jools Holland, just
too stuffy of a performance.

Maybe V2 will continue to milk "PlaY" for every last drop of blood and put
out a MOBYPLAYLIVE DVD next? :) hint hint. Really blew an opportunity with
the lack of live concert footage but other than that a decent DVD. "Nice"
even as Moby likes to say, but could have been so much more.

hey folks

most likely you've never heard of the Philistines Jr
but they are an amazing band from right here in ct...
they're sort of like They Might Be Giants or somebody
but they do a lot of experimental synthy stuff like,
say, the High Llamas or somebody... and anyway,
they're part of the Tarquin Records clan (Happiest
Guys in The World, Zambonis, James Kochalka Superstar
etc.) and of course Moby used to be in the Pork Guys
with a bunch of these guys. so anyway, i found
Philistins' new lp "analog vs stereo" at wpkn
yesterdya, and Moby appears on it! only for like 11
seconds tho. what happens is, the last song on the
album, "55 M.P.H." is like 10 minutes long, and it
goes thru tracks 18-52 on the cd. 18 is the first few
minutes (like, the SONG part) and the rest are
"solos". they get all of their musician friends to
contribute, like basically, they give them 4 bars or
so of the song, and they "solo" on top of it. in the
dance world, this would be called "remixing" i guess.
;) but anyway, Moby has one track, and basically what
he does is turn the beat into this slow dubby techno
groove, and adds scratching on top of it. sort of to
emphasize that, like, he is a "techno" guy now or
something. anyway, it sounds really funny in the
context of the song... and oh yeah, Paul Yates, James
Kochalka Superstar, Guster, members of all the Tarquin
bands, and even members of the Dylan Group and Mice
Parade contribute "solos" too. and there's also a song
on the album called "The Ballad Of Paul Yates".

oi there,
the tent situation was a total fiasco, there were twice as many people on
line for the tent as in it by the time i left it (in need of water, having
the choice of missing oakenfold or collapsing from deyhdration).
rinocerose was especially amazing, great video show. derrick may spun a
cool set, including "you make me feel" by sandra bernhard which is a
peculiarity that i spin sometimes. carl cox spun a great set including
some amusing teaser drops of the new jaxx single, and he was full of
personality. orb was cool, tho a bit cacaphonic at times. i had to bail
durring their set.
water was $350 for a small bottle, vegiterian buritos were $10, but the
meat was being served up the same as the beans, so i got my money back.
outkast was mostly loud with too much mid-range, but were okay, i really
liked their last song, "bombs over baghdad" i think it's called. moby's
set was pretty cool, really great light show, especially for "the sky is
broken". he played fer about an hour and a quarter, left out some things
that would of done well to be in the set (like next is the e, revolver,
find my baby), but oh well.

moby was pretty much inaccessable after the show, maybe just 'cause that's
how he is now, or maybe it had to do with the venue. didn't manage to get
a word with him at any rate. we took some pics, maybe i'll put them up for
viewing if they come out and we can get a working scanner together.
overall, i'd have to say rinocerose was the best act, tho this show lacked
things like new order and the tom tom club.
oh yeah, if any of you have a recording of this show, hook me up.

Last week I mentioned that Best Buy had the Play DVD in their weekly
ad.. well since then I went to Best Buy and I saw a poster as I walked
in advertising the Area One festival.  I also noticed that all
throughout the store they had signs  in various places with the Play
color scheme and one sign with Moby's picture from the cover of Play.

Not sure if any of that makes sense to but if you check out the weekly
ad for Best Buy almost the whole thing is in the Play color scheme.
You can see it on the Best Buy web site when clicking on Weekly Store
Ad.  I think it's kind of strange!

fact that i have dibs on the stuff in my store seeing as i'm the biggest fan

 the tent issue at area: one.  which i'd be very pissed off if i didn't get=
 to seek p.o. or cox.  anyway, i just read this on moby's site:

So this is a sort of apology/explanation about the dance tent at area:one.=
 I'm sorry that people have had to wait to get into the tent, and I'm sorry=
 if people, after waiting, haven't been able to get in. The tent holds=
 3,000 people, and we were not expecting it to be so popular in the middle=
 of the day. In general the success of area:one has kind of surprised us=
 all. In the future we are going to pull up the sides of the tent if it=
 gets crowded and if there are people waiting to get in. but for the first=
 3 shows we didn't know if we'd be allowed to do that by the local=
 authorities. As far as I know we now have permission to lift the sides. So=
 I'm sorry if anyone waited in line and wasn't able to see carl or oakey.=
 But thank you for your patience (and your enthusiasm).

regarding the area:one tent (which was full of ford propoganda),
i'd like to note it was a huge problem in massachussits, which was after
moby posted that. i've talked to sfx (some of the ppl who help put it on)
making some suggestions, but they dunno how much can be done on this tour
(note, it looks like an area:one 2 or some shit might happen next year. i
still dunno how i feel about it, maybe it's just 'cause us east'ers got
outkast instead of new order)
anyhow, if you wanna see cox and oak, get in there early (see
rhinocerose!) and bring lots of water, 'cause when we went out to get
some, it was all over for us and the tent, no oaky. cox rocked tho.
hope yer all well, i'm still trying to get the ultimate mobymusic database
together for mobymusic.com (running into delays with the search engine
production), so stay tuned. (if anyone can build complex database
searchers and wants to help out, i'll throw credit and some moby stuff
your way).

And so to the longawaited Play DVD. We've already had the album, the limited
edition 2CD box set, a three year tour, eight singles, 422 advert tie-ins,
and finally the warts n all DVD, with a remixes CD.

Despite all this, can I just say, Please Moby, we love ya and that but can
you please go away and make a new record? You've done enough. And even I'm
sick of seeing ya face because its been everywhere the past two years. And
I'm bored of Play now. It's a great, and was for a long time, under-rated
album, but in everyone's CD player now.

So does the world need a Moby DVD? Well, sort of. It's very very good, but
in all honesty, some of what is there is a bit unimaginative, isn't it?

The videos themselves, all 10 of them are excellent and thought provoking,
pondering the meaning - or meaninglessness - of work, death, dancing,
friendship, parenthood, fame, and just about anything you can think of.
Certainly better, more provoking than any video fare I have seen in a long
time, barring some of Radioheads mid-period stuff.

And arranged in such a fashion as to tell a sort-of-narrative stream of
consciousness musing on the nature of well, anything you can think of.

There's no shortage of extras as well : a 20 minute "Live At later" off the
BBC. Sadly, it's a flat, straight transfer of a flat and uninspiring TV
broadcast. Even the unusual material on the broadcast (Hymn, Everytime You
Touch Me, for example) has been trimmed without reason (there was enough
space on the disc for the fuill 60 minutes show anyway) in favour of two
live versions of Porcelain - Porcelain makes a total of 8 different
appearances on this DVD. Overkill. I'd much have preferred 'proper' live
footage - such as MTV's excellent V2000 broadcast. And full length at that.

Then To "Give an Idiot A Camcorder" - a sweet, interesting and irritating
documentary. It's just not long enough, and, whilst giving an interesting in
sight into the tedium and insanity of touring is also full of Moby faking
ridiculous, and slightly patronising accents, and giving into base
stereotypes. It might have seemed like a joke at the time, but it looks a
bit, well, awkward now. Though the cliched mock-interviews are frankly,
scathing in their treatment of the kind of heartless journalists who treat
the gift of being able to write about music for a living as a chore. I'd
personally would've liked to have seen something longer, with more insight.
And I'm not taking Meeting People Is Easy here.

Finally, the Moby Megamix. Also available on a seperate mix CD with some
copies of the DVD, it's a frankly uninspoiring mix CD that - whilst airing
some of the more obscure Moby mixes - pummels all the individuality of the
mixes and the man into a 62 minute 4/4 thudfest. It also fails to show off
Moby's generally excellent and underappreiciated mixing skills, as
demonstrated on his "Everything Remixed : Evil Ninja" and "Mixmag" releases.
The uninspiring fractals-by-numbers graphics hardly helpmatters.

So what is it? It's better value for money, in terms of sheer mileage than
near enough any other DVD I've seen. There's more variety in it - but what
it gives us is glimpses, when I'd liked to have seen the full picture - a
full live show, a full documentary, and for that, I'd happily trade the
superflous MobyMegaMix

Overall - 5/5 for trying, 4/5 for content.

Actually, they were trimmed for a very good reason. The
publishing for those songs is administered in most of the
world by Elektra. Mute holds only the UK rights to those
songs and V2 holds no rights at all. So those songs couldn't
be included as the DVD is a world-wide release.

Well, you live and you learn....
shame that say, some of the other V2 stuff couldn't be included...

such as ... Run On, Machete, Why Does My Heart, Bodyrock or Honey. And it
doesn't explain the presence of "Go."

I thought that the publishing for the individual songs and not the
performances made after the expiry of the Elektra contract, i.e. versions
recorded after whenever in 1998 he left Elektra - was controlled by the
other label.

Incidentally all that live stuff was recorded 16th Sept 2000.

That depends upon the publishing rights negotiated to each
party in the deal. If Elektra was granted majority control,
or even just more than Moby, it would prevent him from
re-issuing new recordings of those songs... as I understand
the byzantine world of publishing contracts.

Well, guess what, I'm a stupid prat. I cancelled the auctions I told you all

*toured* together I would make it to at least one show,
regardless of where it was. Now, it's finally happening,
it's one show, it's across a friggin' ocean, and at a show
that was sold out before Moby was even added to the bill.
Grrr. Since Moby is reportedly going to begin working on his
new cd immediately after A:1/slane castle, it seems unlikely
that he will be joining U2 on any of the American dates
being booked for late 2001/early 2002.

There is going to be a slane castle pay-per-view, isn't there?

Actually, what Moby described in his post is EXACTLY what they did in
Detroit Tuesday and it worked beautifully. We had no problems getting in
the tent and there was never a line the whole day of people waiting to get
in and this was a sold out show, 12-15,000 (not sure of actual venue
capacity but it is a big venue).
When Oakenfold started they pulled up the left side of the tent to make it
bigger and there was still plenty of room.

I was at the Toronto show Sunday and the "tent" was a mess. They didn't
actually have the tent there, they held it inside a little nightclub off to
the side of the main venue and the lines were completely unorganized as far
as entering. You couldn't tell where the line ended, people were just
walking up cutting in it was chaos. The Detroit tent situation was handled
beautifully. Could have walked in and out ad nauseum and had no problems.

While we're on the subject of the tent, I just have to ask exactly who
dubbed Oakenfold "the World's Greatest DJ"? Was it himself? I'm surprised
that tent could hold all those people PLUS Pudgy Pauls' ego. For the
"world's greatest DJ" he sure spun a lot of same sounding trance. Yeah it
was OK, but color me unimpressed, from what I heard of Carl Cox he blew
"Oakey" away.

Oakenfold was probably the first of what is now a long line
of "superstar dj's", a title which was bestowed upon him
before he made any kind of blip on the pop culture
consciousness. It's as if the Rolling Stones were dubbed
"The Greatest Rock 'N' Roll Band in the World" before they
made their first album and then stuck to playing pubs and
theaters in England until spontaneously launching on the
"Steel Wheels" tour. Most people who know who Oakenfold is
know him as "the greatest dj in the world" (a title also
claimed by Sasha and Digweed), but the vast majority of
those people have never bought a Perfecto mix disc or seen
him spin live. So when they do see or hear him work, they
have unrealisticly high expectations, performance wise, for
a dj. Plus, these days Oakie suffers a bit from comparison
to newcomers who have built upon the creative foundation.
I've got Oakie's "Another World" mix set, and, while I
personally like a high energy level from my dj's, I love the
way he mixed in different kinds of music and moods to make
the set hypnotic, without resorting to an over abundance of euro-synth-trance.

It's already been said before that Moby has hundreds of songs written for the next album.  The number's more like 130-140 and goes all over the map: punk, pop, dance, experimental.

In that case why doesn't he release an album every year?
I'm sure his record company would love him all the more.
He says he'll pick the songs he loves most & that's how the album will take shape.  I hope nothing external will influence which ones he'll love because I really don't want a Moby pop album (even though I'm sure he'd make really good pop - I don't think Moby can make bad music if he puts this much time into it).

But, yeah, let's have a punk record & a boy-band pop record & an ambient jungle record (*joke*) & heck...let's tap into the goth market, too (whatever there is of it).  Then there'll be all these opposing cliques of Moby fans.  And they'll all be on mobility & it'll be anarchy!
I don't know what my point is anymore, it's all over the place like my love for Moby.  Oh, the anticipation!

also is anyone else disapointed by the fact that the bonus remix cd with the
play dvd has only one track at 60 odd minutes?
i havnt yet played it all the way through as i keep having to start from the
beginning ;-(

also if they couldnt include the south side or WDMHFSB feat Kelis or the
bodyrock star glasses video why did they not include some of the b-sides
with videos made for them? a moby video for running or memory gospel would
be so good ;-)

or how about including some of the b-sides in the mix? at 60 min it is way
to short there could have been a load of remixes that should have made it
including some of the vinyl only mixes that are not available on cd? the
honey feat Kelis and the Red Jerry remis of why does my heart feel so bad
all worthy of being included on the dvd

and am i the only one in the world that cant get the computer part to work?
it says that you need ie5 i have ie6 and it just refuses to work at all ;-(

crap. The International version released a year earlier is

Recently it was reported on aicn.com

doing a score for M. Knight's next film (Director and writer of Sixth Sense,
Unbreakable).  Its a sequel to Unbreakable and he will be doing the
"soundtrack", (I imagine actual SCORE of the film) in collaboration with
Howard Shore (he's done a whole hell of a lot of scores, most recently The
Score, but also Dogma, Crash, High Fidelity, the Cell, etc... Just check
imdb.com for a complete filmography listing.  Fuckin cool no?

am i correct in thinking that the only feature-length movie that moby's
scored is double-tap? anyone? anyone? beuler?
oh, and i was contemplating my collection, and it seems i've a gap in
vinyl for ambient, so if anyone has a copy they'd be willing to part with,
we could talk price.

Sorry everyone, I read the article again and It's not a sequel to =
Unbreakable, rather it is a production under the title of "Signs", and =
even at that upon a closer examination this info becomes highly suspect =
and may be rumor altogether.  Sorry to get your hopes up, but this may =
still be a rumored posibility.  Moby has always been one to be frank and =
open about his current projects so perhaps he can confirm/deny this =

You got that right Brad! I don't think I've ever seen such a quality
discrepancy between a Euro release and an American release. If you only
have the US version then you have NOT heard "Movement In Still Life" let's
put it that way. The US version is an abomination of the International one.

Oakey - sometimes good, often bad, usually going through the motions. I
think he lost his ability to really tune into the (UK) audience a few years
back. Although I've friends who heard him spin in Singapore who said he was
the bomb.
For my money, I would say that DJ Craze and Dexta (Avalanches) are much
better than Oakey. But then I guess the purists among you would call these
people turntablists. And that's a bit like comparing the Rolling Stones with
Moby, or Pink Floyd with the Sex Pistols.
In terms of clubbing DJs my favorite at the moment is Adam Freeland. And
Carl Cox is always, always a delight.

I'm sure Moby lets nothing but his own neurosis pick the best tracks. As for
the pop album. Those of you who've read Replay will know that he had already
written a number of straight pop tracks for Play. But at the time he said he
would probably put this kind of thing out through a different name. Perhaps
on a different label. I reckon the real strings obsession, and increasingly
acoustic, soulful versions of tracks he's been playing may offer an idea of
where he's going.
String quartet soul pop anyone?

punk - he's been there
boy-band - he's a boy who's been in a band of boys
ambient jungle - haven't heard that one for years but I thi9nk there was an

ideas?)
Goth - oh my god every album he;'s done has got a hint of Goth to it! Those
minor chords, those strings - that Joy Division post punk obsession. There
have been times when he could have appeared wearing black mouthing the words
to a Sisters of Mercy record.

What you can guarantee is that he'll never do the same thing twice. Although
he may release the same record ten times!

Top US stars line-up against Bush and global warming.

Beastie Boys, Moby and Alanis Morissette head the line-up of US stars who
have joined forces to oppose President Bush's controversial energy policies
and Bush's refusal to ratify Kyoto.

The Beasties, Moby, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Barenaked Ladies, Tom
Petty, Phish and Dave Matthews Band have pledged joint support for the
anti-Bush New Power Project. Using the artists' web-sites, fan email lists
and gigs/tours/festivals, the New Power Project hopes to speak directly to
hundreds of thousands of fans and persuade them to take direct action in
signing petitions and sending messages to their members of Congress and the
Bush administration itself.

Beastie Boy Mike Diamond said that Bush's policies were: "...heading us back
to a time when humanoids dragged their knuckles on the ground. This is our

In related news, former Doors drummer John Densmore and blues singer Bonnie

a US Rainforest Action Network (RAN) demonstration against US logging

anti-environment campaigns and of trading in 'old-growth' timber.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to repost a message that never got
through, I think I sent it a few weeks back but on the wrong email account,
so here it is:

Hello all.  For those who don't know or for those who forgot, I run the
mobilty ftp.  I set up and intended for this FTP to be used for this list
exclusively for the exchange of rare/hard to find/unable to find Moby stuff.
When i first started it about 2 years ago it was great, and since I've been
back there's been some good traffic, nothing like it used to be, but still
it seems like many people use it.  Mobility is the ONLY group that should
know about the address, I've not given it out to ANYONE else.  HOWEVER that
hasn't seemed to stop some fucker/his fucker friends from trying to use MY
bandwidth, MY disk space, and MY FUCKING time to upload Warez of games,
movies and other garbage.  Its SOMEBODY on this list, or at least someone
told their online buddies about it, whatever it was I hope this person rots
in hell having his/her genitals painfully raped for the rest of eternity,
and by the way, FUCK YOU.  Sorry to vent this out on everyone else, so
please ignore it if it doesn't apply to you.

If you are doing this, or if you know who is doing it, STOP it/tell them to
stop it.  Obviously your files don't last very long on my site.  I check
them periodically and delete them right away; your uploading is in vain, so
knock it the fuck off.

If this continues I'll have to ban all guests and send people individual
passwords to use the site, which I don't want to do, its a hassle for me and
others, better yet I could just shut down the FTP for good and you can be
satisfied in the knowledge that your bullshit actions have deprived the rest
of the list from a nice tool for enjoying Moby.

NO movies, NO non-Moby music, NO-games, NO application software; FUCK OFF.
