Subject: Newly published LDS novel set in the British Isles when 'building' missionaries were allowed to date.
Date: 09 Nov 2000 14:39:41 -0800
I am a native of England, taught Seminary for four years, and have
written for the New Era on and off for 12 years (teaching Seminary got
my brain reworking well enough to begin writing after years of
homemaking!). I have for a long time admired the way fast moving fiction
can bring home gospel principles for our youth - and our grownups. So I
have written two LDS books, set in the British Isles, in the sincere
hope that they will help someone somewhere - hopefully many 'someones'.
"Terracotta Summer' has already intrigued two of my young adult sons
long enough for them to read the whole thing in a few days! (Not a
normal happening)
'Terracotta Summer' deals with several issues, one of which is getting
over the results of an abusive childhood. Teenage rebellion is also
addressed, and the trials of a building missionary who falls in love.
The book is set in the 1960s in the UK and takes place mainly in
Manchester; Airdrie, Scotland; Eglinton, Northern Ireland, and on board
a ship to America.
You can also learn more about 'Terracotta Summer' by following this

and also via the amazon.com web site - and the Deseretbook.com web site
Here's what one reader has to say: (and I've never met her - she owns an
excellent Relief Society web page which is how I made contact)
"Thank you so much for sending me "Terracotta Summer", I got it last
week and couldn't put it down. I read it from cover to cover that day. I
LOVED IT!!! I need the sequel, when is it due out? "Terracotta Summer"
is WONDERFUL. I really was able to feel close to the characters, they
were very realistic. I have to admit I have never been much of a reader,
so I was truly surprised that I read this book in one day. I REALLY
loved it. Thank you again, Sharolyn Buck."
The sequel, "Chamomile Winter" is written (set mostly in Southport and
Londonderry, Northern Ireland) and due out next year. The
subject of recovering from abuse is addressed more fully and the
character finally gets on the road to overcoming the past, in
unpredictable ways, through the gospel of Jesus Christ - and the O'Shea
family is brought together. As in "Terracotta Summer",there are three
plots intertwining throughout the story.
My books don't 'preach' - I try to teach through exciting situations, a
lot of dialogue, and real life characters. I'd be most grateful to
receive feedback if they meet with any success - or if you disagree.
