After reading what Sue and Buck are talking about I was reminded of what = a great film this was considering the story line and the artistic license= the director took in producing it. I have a personal copy of this movie= as I'm sure many of you do. With this said, I must say that the word "b= itch" being used in the movie is quite mild once you take into account wh= at John Kirk Townsend had to say about what he witnessed at the 1834 Rend= ezvous. "We are now lying at the rendezvous. W. Sublette, Captains Cerre, Fitzpa= trick, and other leaders, with their companies are encamped about a mile = from us, on the same plain, and our own camp is crowded with a heterogene= ous assemblage of visitors. The principle of these are Indians... ...to = trade for ammunition, trinkets, and "fire water." There is, in addition = to these, a great variety of personages amongst us; most of them calling = themselves white men... These people, with their obstreperous mirth, the= ir whooping, and howling, and quarrelling, added to the mounted Indians, = who are constantly dashing into and through our camp, yelling like fiends= , the barking and baying of savage wolf-dogs, and the incessant cracking = of rifles and carbines, render our camp a perfect bedlam. A more unpleas= ant situation for an invalid could scarcely be conceived. Now, THAT is the spirit of Rendezvous!!! After reading this and then wat= ching the movie, I would have to say, Hollywood toned it down a bit. I contacted "the boys" and they told me some stuff to=20 try and they are sending me out a load-up disk so I should be up to snuff in= =20 a week. I am trying to get the Old Folks rate at the same time but they are= =20 slow to move on that one as well. Think of you often - especially since I am in and out of my shop every day=20 and see your cane arrow every time I pass the portal. =20 Some stuff moving here that might produce a good future crop: north of here= =20 is an old historic farm. USU (our AG school) has title to it and the=20 property that includes many old original gas and steam-operated pieces of=20 equipment. They run the farm year 'round but do all the work the "old way".= =20 Plus the farm buildings, re-enactors . . . the whole bit for preservation,=20 education, and tourism. Once a year they have a two week festival that=20 includes a pagent, musicians, food, pow-wow, 19th century military (with=20 muskets, Hotchkis gun and Gatling gun firing every quarter hour), a trapper'= s=20 camp, and Indian camp, buffalo soldier, frontier town, gunfights, period=20 craftsmen (I make brooms, as an example) and . . . you get the idea. They=20 have built a nice $3mil visitors' center and are working on a developed=20 "primitive" Indian camp. Now they are beginning plans for a mountain man=20 area complete with palisaded fur trade post. The board member in charge, a=20 guy named "Patch" (I nick-named him decades ago. He liked it and changed hi= s=20 name legally a decade ago. Am I his god-father?), and I are the planners. =20 It could work into a job for me (not full-time! I am retired!) as the Chief= =20 Factor of the post/fort . . . at least consulting fees. Tomorrow I will cross over into Wyoming for a meeting with a board whose=20 intent is to buy up land surrounding the original Fort Bridger - or such 40=20 acres the State of Wyoming has title to. This is to build a structure for a= =20 modern day "Mountain Man Hall of Fame" - sort of visitors' center museum, an= d=20 to get enough land in perpetual trust to assure a place to forever have a=20 rendezvous. I may bourgeois a new mid-summer rendezvous up there on a newly= =20 acquired piece of original fort ground. This will be 29 years since I starte= d=20 the grand daddy of all modern rendezvous at the Fort. The second one would=20 be structured like the first one I bourgeoised - which is not very=20 structured at all. And - just got off the phone with a fellow who teaches wilderness classes to= =20 youth in Canada for a week in July. If I will agree to go with him I will=20 teach beadwork and moccasin making (done this for years already) while he=20 teaches wood-lore. It is in Alberta where I had ancestors go to colonize=20 back in the mid-1800s under the direction of Brigham Young (non-Italian=20 ancestors). I want to see that part of Canada and also visit a Hudsons' Ba= y=20 Store (which I expect to be disapointing). I will make little or nothing bu= t=20 will get a free trip. Keeps snowing here but the roads melt off - maybe a little help from=20 snow-plows. Cold, though: 9=B0 to 12=B0 at night. It helps the Olympics pe= ople=20 breath easier as they get a good layer of snow up there when we just get a=20 dusting here. That range of mountains starts a mile and a half east of here= =20 and goes up over10,000' a number of places 30 miles north and south of here.= =20 That's where the doin's will git did. Actually there is a parking lot for=20 shuttle busses and 6,500 cars 1 mile from the house here. Gonna hat it when= =20 that thing gets busy (this is actually pretty rural here). Eight miles east= =20 of here (up the river, though the mountain pass and about where the skiers=20 will turn up to get to Snow Basin) is where the confrontation between Peter=20 Skene Ogden and Johnston Gardner took place 25 May 1825. The road they=20 travel lies on the path Ogden took to get from "Ogden's Hole" (not Ogden=20 City, Utah) to the Weber River. Don't a= sk me how they do it but I do know that it is great stuff and sometimes t= reating it will ruin it. It works on the principle that as it is exposed= to moisture the fibers swell and it shuts itself off so no leaks. If yo= u treat it then it may lose the ability to respond to moisture. I've see= n some good quality stuff swell up in a light dew. The amount of moistur= e in Calif would really make that stuff valuable. Plus, it's light weigh= t. For a rope, or center stick? I figure this would provide a 11' X 14' (approx.) tarp, with a thick section down the middle of the 14' length. I made a paper scale model of this, and it looks promising. I had a similar tarp ( 12' X 18') made from an old army tent liner, and it made a roomy little lean to. Unfortunetly this was probably Korean war tent liner, and it went to seed after 15 years of use. Ya just can't buy good stuff anymore <g>.
