I trap beaver and using a horse where I can. It makes it a lot easier.
Beaver aren't light, even if it is just their pelt and if you add in the
weight of a few traps it get worse. The horse is a welcome addition.

Neat hunt, but I was at an auction the last week end and you could buy a
buffalo for as little as $300.00. A kind of do your own hunt if you pleased.

Lee-shrinkage depends on weave, etc. I always wash and
dry any fabric for shirts. Hot wash, hot dry. Do this
several times-fabric will tend to shrink each time. I
have one shirt that shrunk several sizes-the fabric
hadn't been pre-shrunk. Pre-shrinking will make all
the difference.

Well, Joe, I guess that would be a way to go. But of course many of us do
not have a way to transport the critter (and that could be a fair expense),
or a secure place to put it for the hunt (having seen a buffalo take down
fences here in Texas, I am reluctant to beg a "favor" from a land-owing
friend).
So for those of us who want a prime buffalo, meat hide and all, in the right
season, without transport or land readily available, the raffle may not be a
bad way to go. Just my thoughts.
Best regards,

I have re-joined the list. I want to sincerely thank all of you that sent me

The rest of you, please except my apology for calling you "Wanta Be's". You
are more mountain man than I thought. Your reading ability is on the same
level as theirs was. If you are going to reply to a post read everything
that is said on both sides before sending your reply. Some of you didn't
read what I wrote Mike, or you didn't believe it?
In any case let me issue this challenge: I have done more with horses, spent
more time in the mountains, and taken pack strings to more place than all of
the "Wanta Be's" on this list put together. Now if any of you think you have
done more, put up your money or shut the hell up.
I round up cattle every fall towards the head of North Horse Creek. We start
about twenty miles above the old Fort Bonneville. If any of you want to
bring your horse next summer, I will give you a history lesson as to why you
can't efficiently trap these streams using a horse except to get you to the
mouth of the canyons.
******
Nobody ever said Mountain Men didn't use horses when they were available.
They just didn't ride five out of seven days....How much clearer can I state
it.

One other point in the past several of you have said how important
documentation is and I agree. In the future, if you use well documented in
your argument against what I have said list the sources and the page

Remember some of the pictures I showed you of the power these animals have,
they can destroy a stock trailer with out much effort - man do pop rivets
fly, can walk through a solid wooden wall of a barn or bend over "T" posts a
dozen at a time - and that's not being upset just wanting to go to another
area when they want to, all of this makes for good relations with your
friend the farmer. If your animal gets loose and like a friend had happen,
gets with a herd of prime white faces in season, guess who is buying
beefalo's at a steep price.
No thanks, I'll buy a raffle ticket and take my chances if a winner with

Subject: MtMan-List: censoring/manipulation. . . . horses 1835
Gentleman,
It is strange that the AMM search tool listed on their site is out. Is
there a mechanical problem or webb page change? Or, did some weak mind wish
to edit and halt the research available in order to derail the discussion?
Can't seem to find 'horse', 'horses', . . . etc. in all of the AMM documents
listed in the 'search tool'. Of course everyone knows that mechanical items
are subject to go awry. But isn't it a coincidence? Lucky for me that the
'google search engine' can bypass the blockade on the data.
Washington Irving's "Captain Bonneville, Chapter 49, first page says:
"Their horses, which were turned loose to graze during the day, under
heedful eyes, were brought in at night, and shut up in strong pens, built of
large logs of cotton-wood. The snows, during a portion of the
winter, were so deep that the poor animals could find but little sustenance.
Here and there a tuft of grass would peer above the
snow; but they were in general driven to browse the twigs and tender
branches of the trees. When they were turned out in the
morning, the first moments of freedom from the confinement of the pen were
spent in frisking and gambolling. This done, they
went soberly and sadly to work, to glean their scanty subsistence for the
day. In the meantime the men stripped the bark of the
cotton-wood tree for the evening fodder. As the poor horses would return
toward night, with sluggish and dispirited air, the
moment they saw their owners approaching them with blankets filled with
cotton-wood bark, their whole demeanor underwent
a change. A universal neighing and capering took place; they would rush
forward, smell to the blankets, paw the earth, snort,
whinny and prance round with head and tail erect, until the blankets were
opened, and the welcome provender spread before
them. These evidences of intelligence and gladness were frequently recounted
by the trappers as proving the sagacity of the
animal.
These veteran rovers of the mountains look upon their horses as in some
respects gifted with almost human intellect. An old and
experienced trapper, when mounting guard upon the camp in dark nights and
times of peril, gives heedful attention to all the
sounds and signs of the horses. No enemy enters nor approaches the camp
without attracting their notice, and their movements
not only give a vague alarm, but it is said, will even indicate to the
knowing trapper the very quarter whence the danger
threatens."
This took place in June, 1835; as the previous chapter reads 1835.
So Ned, this ones for you, in that the writer admits of the winter related
troubles and the Indian's lust in trying to steal them. Horses from this
reference definitely are a burden as well as an need of both Indian and
trappers.

Joe,
At the last 'exotic animal' auction that I went to here in Iowa, full
grown bull bison were going for 900.00 [ the cows for much less ] and full
grown elk were going for 1200.00 and less. When I asked the auctioneer why,
he said that when the economy was bad then cattle prices went up and the
exotics went down. The next auction will be in the spring and I will be
there and curious. Great fun and an education for the little ones! John

Buck,
Yes, those photos told the tale well.
I have seen a seemingly contented buffalo "walk" through a game proof fence
just to smell the flowers on the side of the road. I have also seen a less
than contented bull take down multiple barbed wire fences as he headed
North, never to be seen again.
So, I salute anyone who wants to have their own hunt with a purchased
animal. May they have extra lives if the buff decides to make the
purchaser a target, and one heck of a lot of insurance if their tbuffalo
injures others or destroys someone elses property.
Me, I am buying the winning ticket. You bring your camera and watch.
Take care of you and yours.
Regards,
Pablo

I am Wynn's wife, Gretchen, and every once in a while I glance through these
messages to keep up with one of my husband's many passions. I have no
documentation that proves Mountain men were honest, polite people, but I would
like to believe in the comraderie and good graces that my husband has enjoyed
and credits all his brothers for trying to emulate. I do not profess to
understand all the issues that you are feeling defensive about, but in the off
chance that perhaps you just don't know, I should tell you just how offensive
and abusive you sound. I have always found it to be a poor debate when we stoop
to arguing our points with sarcasm and superlatives. If nothing else, sir,
please remember that women and children also enjoy reading this list.
On a side note, my husband and I have been looking for a chance to herd cattle
since the man we used to help every Fall had health problems and had to quit a
few years ago. Perhaps we will take you up on your offer.

Ned, Welcome back. Come on, tell us how you really feel...<g>.. I
enjoy the horse dialogs that go on here, and we all know that without a
little variety, there wouldn't be a horse race. Yours Truly, hardtack

Probably won't be anything worth picking up after that bull gets done with
you and your gear kid. The only bones we'll have to bleach will be your
broken limbs, your wife would still probably want your skull for some
unknown reason ? <GG> On one hunt we saw a 1000 lb. bull hook his horns
inside a half full of grain 55 gal drum and flip it 15 feet into the air, he
made it look light, like it was a beach ball - that easy. Think what he
could do with a 200 lb. human ?
Only kidding Dennis we will have several back up shooters incase the winner
doesn't have his own, no one needs anyone getting hurt. Having put down a
dozen of these animals since 1978, I never take them lightly, remember they
can catch a good quarter horse in the 1st 100 yards (that's over our longest
shooting distance) and have the ability to turn on a dime, look at some of
the photos - a few got closer than I wanted, so much for planning.
