I have met a few AMM members and must say that the beneifit was all =

Greenhorn, in some circles I am a experienced outdoorsman, in others I =
am a greenhorn. I can accept this.
I can see how some would see AMM members as know it alls as they are =
very knowledgable in their area. I am knowledgeable in other areas and =
have a feeling that I have come off as a know it all at times. It =
happens.
I think what insults some is that they are ignorant to the =
qualifications needed to be in the AMM. I read them, I may do it in the =
future, but at this point in time I do not have the time or the =
discipline to. And, I usually do not do anyting half arsed. If I do =
it, I do it. But there are some individuals that poo poo the =
requirements. They always have to be the big man. The big mouth who =
has a comment for everything. These are the guys I kind of just tune =
out.
I enjoy this board as the info. I get from those that visit is usually =
top notch. You guys know your stuff. The gents that I have =
communicated with online, offline, tele., and letters have all been =
upstanding. =20
I am on a constant quest to increase my knowledge of both buckskinning =
and the mountain man era. If I was to visit an AMM encampment I would =
humbly accept their input and then use it as it best suites me at the =
time. =20
I must however make one complaint. I read and hear the word portray in =
these circles. I find it very hard to portray, as buckskinning is what =
I do, what I am. I try to be period correct in the 1800 to 1840 era, =
but I by no means portray. This is not a play, or a skit. If I could =
get away with wearing my leggins and long shirt on a daily basis, I =
would. I am not one of these guys who joins these clubs and plays on =
the weekends. =20
That being said, I will fade back into the shadows and absord all the =
good info.

I have only "met" AMM folks via this forum, so I can't speak from personal
knowledge of any. As I was recently taught on another list, things "ain't"
always what they seem in this electronic medium, and what may seem to come
across as elitism may just be the quiet authority that comes from hard-won
experience. I've read the AMM requirements -- I doubt if I could ever meet
them satisfactorily, and my hat's off to those who have. AND, my ears are
open to them as well. Just another view from outside.

Ad, would you post up this reply to the list, please? I am not
subscribed from this address ...
(Stepping up to the council fire, B'st'rd pitches something into the
community pot. Is it fat cow or poor bull?)
It is true that you have to smoke out the intent of the poster, and
while I, of course, agree that being deceitful is a problem (that some,
like Beckwourth, took to a new height, BTW), consider this.
Say I knew Jerry Smith and his ten brothers. Rather than enumerate them
I would call them Jerry and his brothers. Or the Smith brothers.
Likewise, if I were referring to AMM members, who call themselves a
brotherhood, I would find it natural to refer to AMM brothers. I might
even start a post to the list, if I had a question about the AMM's
policy on something, "AMM brothers:"
Does this necessarily imply that they are my brothers? I think not. Or
that I am trying to imply a kinship or membership to the AMM? No. Not
unless I add "my." Being an AMM member is a fine distinction awarded
after diligent pursuit of craft. Likewise, the intent of the appelation
is also a fine distinction, maybe lost in the poor grammar and spelling
of one who does more than writes.

Sir:
In S. V. Grancsay's book "American Engraved Powder Horns" there are several
similiar engravings quoted:
"I Powder with my brother ball
Most herolike doth conquer all"
Varients of the last line include:
"Hero like do conquer all"
"Am hero like to (do) conquer all"
"I herow like do conquer all"
"I'm hero like I conquer all"
"Victoriously do conquer all".
There are several other variants listed along with drawings and I highly
recommend this book. Mr. Grancsay was the Curator Emeritus of Arms and Armor
at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City

Dick,
I thought I made it fairly clear that the title of "elitists' was not a name
the AMM hung on it's self but one that those with the TC's, chrome leather
and so on (that never change) gave us (non-members and never would fit
because of their attitudes).
We have seen many change (for the better) when they where shown the right
path with recommended books, research material, articles by Mark Baker or
examples of what they should do to correct the Hollywood baloney appearance,
remember that guy the movie company picked at Jackson Hole off the street
with the chrome sunglasses and styled hair do - brother was he sweet, and
Crazy really liked the way he walked. <GG>.

Mac,
I think you'll find your Lyman will be an excellent starting point in the
rendezvous hobby. Sounds like it's already proven itself by making meat, so
go ahead!
Good luck, this mountain man crowd is a good bunch of guys.

Howdy Mac,
If your going to carry a Hawken, the Great Plains Hawken is the best
factory made Hawken for the money. None of the other factory made Hawkens
even come close to resembling a Hawken. But, the S. Hawken is to late for
the rendesvous period. It's one of those details that is acceptable but not
quite correct. The earlier J&S Hawken is authentic to the period, however.
The old trade fusil is a real authentic to the period way to go. Read
Hanson's The Hawken Rifle:It's place in history, for more info on Hawken
rifles in the fur trade period. Hanson also put out a book on Trade Guns
that is well worth thee time to read. Until you can upgrade, carry the GPR
Hawken with pride. She made meat!

Hallo the Camp,
Folks, I'm in need of your suggestions. Brian and I are finally going
to Yellowstone Park this spring. We are hoping to go the first two weeks in
June. We would love to attend an event or two along the way out and/or
back. We are heading west from Iowa. The route is undecided, as we will
go whichever way we can catch a Voo. Anywhere between the Black Hills
and Yellowstone. I've been looking and can't find any listings for events in
Wyoming. Is it too early? Any help or suggestions would be very welcome.
Thank you.

Sue,
I clipped this off the mlml list so as not to have to retype it since it
gives so much information and encouragement to attend. I can vouch for the
hype. For a non AMM event the RMNR is one heck of a great Rendezvous that I
don't council anyone to ever miss if they have never made it. I would
encourage you to change your schedule to encompas this event. Other than the
RMNR and the Pacific Primitive which is almost as big out in OR. earlier in
June I don't know of any events in your time frame.

Re: the 2002! Rocky Mountain National Rendezvous...
For the benefit of list members who have not(recently)attended:
It is July 12th thru 20th.
It is at Elk Park, Utah, just south of Manila, Utah.
The RMNR has been there at least three times before.
It is a nice site...and the RMNR is a 'good-un'! Usually about 800 camps
and about 150-200 traders!
It is not necessarily for 'beginner, first-time rendezvousers'...unless you
been practicin'!
But it is not AMM either! You can't come as a "Bib-skinner"...but you can
definitely be a pilgrim if you and your camp meet the minimum pre-1840's
threshold.
If you want to know how LITTLE you can bring and get by,
ask TOF!
If you want to know how MUCH you can carry to Rendezvous, ask me! (My only
excuse is I have several times had 20+ adults and kids in my camp, and I
love it!)
The shooting program varies, and can be as good or bad as the willingness of
the participants to get involved...but there are a lot of shooters of all
ages...
Also, TOF and Carney seemed to have picked up a flinter or two at the 2001
Rendezvous, undoubtedly again taking advantage of those of us of lesser
knowledge and acumen!
NOW that you can look at the photos...you can get an idea of what its
like...I really do like to encourage those who WANT to go, but are concerned
that the RMNR is just too 'regimented"...to just go for it!

DON
not wanting to let you mislead the guy who asked about hawken rifles but
believe you need to look in John beard's books on hawken rifles---there
are two of them---the hawken rifle the mountain man's choice and 15 years
in the hawken lode---ref the chronological record of events for hawkens
in both books ---1822 s hawken comes too st louis to join jacob hawken in
the gun making trade---in 1836 only s hawken listed in st louis---no j.
hawken---so both a early and a transition hawken is in the time
span---last usage of the J& s stamp of documented hawkens was 1824---J.
P. Gemner bought out the hawken shop after the fur trade period but
continued to stamp S Hawken on guns for many years after he bought the
shop from sam---
sorry pard---just for your info---and remember there are only 4
documented flint hawken rifles by jake and sam and only 2
fullstocks---but their father made a bunch---also jake and sam worked at
harpers ferry and if you look real close a hawken rifle is basically a
1803 harpers ferry rifle and then combine it with a english sporting
rifle and you have a hawken--- bout that simple---
Nuff said---
