Trapping in the winter is not that bad ,only thing you must keep in mind is
drying off then you get out.I have always removed my footwear and leggins
before getting in to the water to trap.I always plan what I'm going to do and
what type of set I hope to place. Mind you it alot of time it will change
when you are looking at it stright on. And always limit youself to how long
you will be in the water. And last thing always have extra near by in case
you fall in all the way. Just what i have picked up in the 25 years of
trapping.Hope it helps.

Hey Ponyrider,
Here is a book that will supply you with answers to your question last fall.
The name of the book is: French Fur Traders & Voyageurs in the American
West.
The Author is: Leroy Hafen.
Frenchmen were far ahead of Englishmen in the early Far West, on only prior
in time, but greater in numbers and in historical importance. They were the
first to navigate the Mississippi and tributaries and founded Lt. Louis and
New Orleans. Though France lost her North American possessions in 1763,
thousands of her nativies remained on the dcontinent. Many of them were
voyageurs for Hudson'Bay Company, whose descendants would join American fur
trade companies plying the trans-Missippi West.
The book may be optained from TOF in soft cover, 336 pages, 6" x 9" format,
illustrated with maps for only $15.00
I think you will find the information you are looking for and will be
justifably proud of the cultural achievements written by LeRoy Hafen.
Sincerely,
Walt

Hi Jim,
In the early years anyone with access to buffalo would have a suitable
"mountain man butter" The same fat that is used to make pemmican works
rather well as 'grease'.
You could find butter and lard at Fort Union.

Hi Hardtack, my Crow friends still eat buffalo marrow on a regular basis.
But use it as a form of food in and of itself. A typical Crow old time
traditional meal is dried buffalo meat, pemmican and marrow along with dried
berries.

Pony,
From the earliest HBC and Witney blankets, the thin black stripes from 4 to 8
inches in length (different time frames will vary in length) is what is counted
for the size of the blanket, the color, width of stripes/strips are what is used
to put a time period on the blanket along with edge wrap, etc. There are several
good articles on the subject, one being an article by AMM member Tom Crain "The
Witney Blanket" published a dozen years ago in the T&LR, Muzzle Blasts and Black
Powder Report.

Hello All,
I have a book entitled "The Manuscript Journals of Alexander Henry and

Volume II of three volumes and edited by Elliot Coues. I have searched

Ponyrider,
I walked through an antique show a couple years ago here in my town and
looking in a glass case spied a nice little Ft. Meigs ax/hatchet. This one
had a nice piece of ivory looking stuff in an oval shape on the handle and
what looked like a fairly fancy piece of straight grain wood suitable for a
hand ax. They sell for around $25 or so bucks in several catalogs. I asked
the dealer what he wanted for it and without blinking an eye he
said.......................$425. Then he said, "They area quit rare". I
looked at him for a moment and then asked, "How many do you want me to get
you just like this one at that price?". He didn't smile and turned his back
on me.
I'm not an expert on HBC blankets but it is widely known that Hudson's Bay
puts those little "point" strips on their new blankets to represent the Fur
Trade Era practice of pricing blankets by "points". I understand that at one
time this represented the number of pelts required in trade and perhaps
later denoted the finished size of the blanket.

TrapRJoe and others,
With all due respect, St. Louis was founded by Pierre Laclede, a French =
fur trader, in 1764. His adjutant was his 13-year old stepson, Rene =
Auguste Chouteau, founder of the great French fur trading dynasty. =
Earlier French settlements in the area were Ste. Genevieve (1750) and a =
series of settlements in the lower Ohio River valley dating to the =
1730s. After the French and Indian War, France (the loser) ceded the =
territory of Louisiana to Spain. But Spanish never outnumbered Frenchmen =
in St. Louis and the city remained French in culture and language until =
the 19th century. Part of what is confusing is that most French =
inhabitants of St. Louis and Louisiana Territory swore allegiance to =
Spain and simply recorded their names in the Spanish version. Thus, the =
early explorer of the Missouri River, Jacques d'Eglise, became, in the =
historical records of St. Louis, Santiago de Iglesia (both names mean =
the same thing and translate into English as "James Church"). The =
Spanish were not first in St. Louis--either as founders or in numbers of =
inhabitants or in importance in the fur trade on the Missouri River. =
Manuel Lisa was a late-coming exception to the domination of the =
Missouri River trade by the French house of Chouteau and others. A good =
documentary history of the Missouri fur trade before the American =
possession of Louisiana Territory is A.P. Nasatir, BEFORE LEWIS AND =
CLARK, 2 vols., paperback edition available from Bison Books, University =
of Nebraska Press.

Yes, but if you do say something most dealers get very upset that you question
their knowledge. But, there are many I have talked too that welcome the
impute. Some dealers do think they know everything. Look at ebay.

Yeah... but some dealers are just TOTALLY stupid!! Went to an auction here
in Alderson, and the guy was trying to pass off some older reproductions as
originals... Told him this, and he got huffy with me. I brought one of mine
over and asked him to auction it as it was REAL old, probably back to the
1700s... heh... he was going t odo it, and was drooling over the price he
thought he could get for it. I told him it was a repro, and showed him how
you can tell... *grins* He's still not speaking to me.
