The remarks that Randy shared are good and should be kept in mind on the next event of this nature. Won't recommend this but it was interesting to watch and probably close to real life if living in those times. Several years ago at the Nov. Ft. deChartre "woodswalk", the last position you would have before running to freedom (the fort) was encountering two Indians. Most could shoot the first target, but would die before taking care of the second one, as having used up their resources at that point. An older gentleman was finishing the coarse making it to the last position (having had a few miss fires with his "Dixie Poor Boy"), but still in the running with his time. At the last position he shot the first target (having no knife or hawk, as they where used on other targets), he ran full bore at the second Indian and with a hardy swing of his "Poor Boy" he broke the target in half along with the wrist of his gun. Dropping the gun and running as fast as he could to the finish line. Jack Gardner of TVM was in our group and was so impressed with the older man's move to finish the coarse, Jack later made him a real deal on a TVM flinter, the old boy came in third on the "woodswalk" and went home with a new rifle to top it off. Modern thinking didn't impair him, would it have stopped you ? Or at least you need to consider all your possible alternatives. Capt. L said it best when he said something like "you can do anything that is not forbidden to do." Sometimes you amaze yourself when that light bulb goes off over your head and you do something that earns those needed points. It is normal for some people to whine and cry about the rules and how they are scored when they participate in their first couple of survival matches. I told TOF that it would happen. After going on several matches most people get into the spirit of these matches and find they really enjoy them. I like survivals because they are a shooting game, a mind game and sometimes a trivia game. I have developed the "thinking outside the box" and I am big on history and researching things past so always do good on the time period trivia questions both of which compensates for any lack of accuracy when shooting because of my failing eyesight. So many people are afraid to go on one of these matches because they don't have the right gear or can't shoot good enough, etc. The name of this game is not winning, but rather to have an enjoyable experience and spend some time out with your favorite gun. Which is better to start with? Hi C Kent, I don't know about that particular rifle, but for bigger game- a .54 would have some advantage. A .50 would be slightly cheaper to shoot, for range shooting. I've had a .54, but use a .50 Dixie Poorboy, flinter as my rifled shooter now. If the barrel stock is the same thickness, the .54 will be less barrel heavy. I have a T.C. .45, that has the same barrel stock as the .36 in this same model. I got the 45 so it would be lighter. I did. Recently I received a reply from Walmart saying that they thanked me for my input and assured me that they had no intention of modifying or discontinuing their full line of shooters supplies and firearms. I must have emptied my delete file because I can no longer access their reply. Now I am not saying that it is inappropriate to continue to tell Walmart and every other firearms retailer that we appreciate their courage in continuing to offer the law abiding citizen and sportsman a retail outlet of quality sporting goods including firearms and the supplies and equipment to use them. They have one fire hazard built in to them. It is the flap that is sewn on to the tent to cover the hole for the stove pipe. When in use with a stove this flap is rolled and tied up out of the way but on some if not most of these tents this roll is very close to the stove pipe. You want to check and make sure this is not the case with yours. I burned a big hole in the side of a 10 footer once because of this and have seen a couple others burn down over the years because of it. If this is the case with yours there are two ways you can fix it. If you will always be using a stove in it just cut the flap off or take it to a tent smith and have them move the flap so it comes from the bottom and have a short flap on top that it can slip under and tie in place this will give you the water shed you need but when using the stove the flap will be hanging down below the pipe not rolled up above the stove pipe. I would like to tell you of a coworkers solution to eye and shooting troubles. This fellow had special glasses made. At the bottom of the lense was his regular bifocal script. In the middle was his normal distance script. At the top was another bifocal "type" of grind that was ground to the distance that the clays would fly from. He said he looked thru the bottom of the lens at the barrel of his scatter gun, then raise his eyeballs up to see the clays flying. Not having to raise his whole head up. Said it worked for him. He called these glasses "electricans glasses" as he was an electrican he had another pair of glasses to work in. They had his normal bifocal grind at bottom and at the top. When working above his head he just raised his eye`s and didn`t have to cock his head back at an uncomfortable angle. They produce Carbon Monoxide which is an odorless gas that is absorbed by the hemoglobin in the blood and restricts it's ability to carry oxygen. We have many third world emigrants die each year in our area because they are used to using such devices to cook and heat with. Whole families. A few extra blankets are worth the trouble and expense!! What is that when compared to a person's health or the value of their life!!! I have worked with Boy Scouts with all manner of tents and shelters and the one hard and fast rule is no flames or coals inside the tent or shelter! No injuries yet!!! I woke up with one bad headache and sick in my stomach, when trying to get outside - is when I realized what had happened. The five of us where sick for several days, and real lucky I woke up or we may not have had a second chance.
