I think the good captain left off the letter y from his post. I believe he
meant to say "...some jerky and parched corn...".

Hallo the List,
I suspect the "Great Capt Lahti" is going to try and freeze me to death this
winter on a "jaunt"....so I'm wondering what was the most common style (old
tailor, Norwester, Metis, etc) capote used in the RMFT.
I'm not gonna go under that easy...(I've got a new knife he wants)

Capt,
That should work just fine. I don't even remember why I started doing it
the way I do. Have to give your method a try. Lord knows I've got enough
hides laid on to experiment with. Ole Rick Palmer's been complaining about
his braintan pants going south on him, so he's been eyeballin' my hides......
Take care.

The simpler the better from a historical point of view. No cloth or leather
fringe. No tassels or streamers from the hood. Originals made by the
voyagers were tailored in the sleeves. Most had buttons of some sort. I
figure if it has an attached hood, it's a capote. Without a hood, it's a
blanket coat or jacket. The untailored versions sans buttons and with
streamers, fringe and such were Indian style and dated from the reservation
period in most museum examples. These Blackfoot and Salish styles were
often featured in ads by the Northern Pacific railroad and paintings by
Remington and Russell. I've pretty much substituted a poncho for my cold
weather outer wear. It doubles as a blanket at night. If I'm wearing it in
the cool of the morning, it rolls up and ties across my shoulder out of the
way as the sun warms up. 'Course I'm from California where snow is an
unnecessary freezing of water.
