I should send her a picture of the remains of my friends new this spring
Spring Valley tipi. She'd lit some candles in it as her and a friend
were going to spend the night in it. They also were having a bonfire
outside the tent. One of the people looked at the tent and wondered
about all the smoke coming out the top. As soon as the opened the door

Everything inside burnt, I was finding shells from her shell dress, she
had a camp chair and pack baskets, all ashes. Should make an

It's too wide. Try to size your page so that it is less than 640 pixels
wide. Most users have only 14" or 15" monitors and will not read your page
if they have to scroll back and forth to read it.
> Pictures were over the text in several places,
The relative spacings you have chosen for your graphics cause them to float,
rather than have the text wrap around them, and consequently they float over
the text, rendering it unreadable. This is true even when using IE5.5, the
latest version which should support your Frontpage coding.
>the counter did not seem to work,
The right side of the counter is covered by a graphic, making only part of
the left side viewable.
>FOREVER to load... graphic intensive?
Get one of the shareware graphics programs which allows you to size and
compress the graphics. Paintshop Pro is the best and can be downloaded from
most of the software repositories. Compressing them allows them to load
faster.

I get the same thing witht eh same version of Netscape, but do not have the
same problem with Internet Explorer. i did not change my settings and do not
know if this has any effect. I'm set at 1024 x 786.
<<the counter did not seem to work, >>
Same here, both browsers.
Otherwise it's a great site and seems to be well thought out. As for the
problem with the counter, could be any number of things. As for the other
problem, using a table might be the solution.

Problem is in your code. I would suggest thinking about using a table to

Thanks for the info. I have a 17 plus screen and then saw it for the first time

oriented. I used jpg because of the fuzziness of gif for most photos since many
people do research on the tipis. But I do see the point. Will be working on it
tonight to pare down the size of a page, changing photos, and adding many more.

Ho Camp,
I have a friend who runs a deer processing center and I have access to some
pretty good whitetail skins. I have done a good bit of research (books and
web mostly cause I don't know anyone round here who does braintan) and am
ready to start trying to braintan a skin or two. The materials I have read
all talk about the different types of brain to use. I was just wondering if
anyone out there knows if the brains can make you sick or residue wil do the
same (some brains carry viruses and "slow viruses" - that hang around for
months or years and then get you)? Has anyone gotten sick from this process?
What steps can I take (besides latex gloves) to prevent this? Or am I just
worrying too much about this? Thanks for advice anyone!

C. Kent, It won't hurt to be careful. I wash my hands often with good
soap all through the process. I also use lots of hand lotion, If your
skin is saturated it won't soak up as well. I don't handle brains if I
have raw cuts, etc.. on my hands. I have heard of fellows having
problems with bacteria infections, but the word is these guys weren't
very hygenic in the first place. If your hands are cracked, or cut, or
puntured, ....heal your hands before messing with brains, etc.... I
have never used gloves while braining, but I do make sure my hands aren't
'open' for infection. My favorite brain books are Wet-Scrape Braintanned
Buckskin, by Edholm and Wilder ISBN 0-9654965-4-6 and Deerskins into
Buckskins by Richards ISBN 0-9658672-0-X hope this helps,

according to my limited knowledge of such parasites. you have to ingest
them, through the digestive system. the reason the effects take a year to
notice is, the parasite is making it's way slowly from the bowel to the
blood stream and eventually to the brain. plus, I think you have to cook
the brains before you use them to tan hides, therfore killing the
parasites. please correct me, anybody, if I'm wrong about this.

As Tom noted, cooking helps. I use my wife's blender and blend the brains
up really fine (usually when she's gone, then wash good to hide the
evidence). Next I throw the brain "soup" into a pan with a little water and
bring it to a boil. The brains will go from pink to gray. As soon as they
hit a boil I take them off the heat and let them cool. I usually then put
the brains in the container I'll be soaking the hides in and add enough cold
water to make the solution cool. If you can't leave your hand in there for
about a minute, it's too hot. Don't want to "cook" the hide.
This has worked for me and I've had no problems infection wise.
Good luck!

Yup.
Those brains are simmered into "soup" before you begin to use them. The rule
for pasturization is 140 degrees plus for 10 minutes kills bacteria. You
will get some other messages, but all the times I have done this process and
all the Indians I know who have . . . nobody got sick from it.

Allen,
I didn't want to jump in here too soon because I know many of you have had a
lot more experience braining hides than I have. But just for a bit extra
info, when I did it I cooked the brains as a whole first to the gray color
(done) and then pulverized them in the wife's blender when she wasn't
around, cleaned it up and put it away and added the brain soup to water as
you do. Worked fine. So I think you can cook them first, then pulverize if
you want to.

Silers. I was told by the Trader that the locks we Silers that he
specifically had assembled, and were every much as good as the Chamber
Slier that are so fine.
THIS TRADER does not accept PLASTIC, and only does business by check,
cash or money order. I order the kits with the assurance of getting
what I was promised, and sent a personal check for almost $800.00 to
cover the kit, replacement Investment Cast Ram Rod Pipes, and Entry
Thimble, Patch Box, and Patch Box Release Spring Kit.
The box with the kit arrived in three weeks and I drove cross town to
drop it off with my friend who is a hobby builder. Went we opened the
kit to my surprise thing were not right. First off I did not get as
promised on the telephone & catalog a Large Siler Lock. What was
enclosed was a poorly assemble L & R Classic lock that had more than a
few problems. Also the Investment Cast Ram Rod Pipes, and Entry Thimble
that I pad extra for were not included in the kit was I got was the
STANDARD Brass Sheet Metal Ram Rod Pipes, and Entry Thimble. Last the
stock that I paid a real premium for was not as represented =93Striped
Like A Barber Pole From End to End=94.
So the next business day I called the Trader spoke with the owner of the
company and asked what gives. The explanation I got was that the L & R
Classic was =93TECHNICALLY=94 a Siler, also =93HE=94 thought the enclosed=
Rod
Pipes, and Entry Thimble would look best with the kit I ordered. Last
the stock that was sent was =93HIS BEST=94.
I had already check the Lock Mortise, and found that his L & R Lock
Mortise was way to big for a Large Siler, and that if I purchased a
Large Siler from Chambers it would flop around in the over sized lock
mortise.
I asked the Trader about his =93RETURN=94 policy stated in his catalog, a=
nd
was told in so many words that what I got was his best and he could do
nothing for me at this point. As all his kit were the same, and I was
getting the impression that I was dealing with an unscrupulous person
who had my money, and I really had no recourse.
The point of this post is a WARNING TO ALL WHO READ THIS. If you are
not able to purchase in person, and must do as I did. Use your CREDIT
CARD, and DO NOT SEND CHECKS, CASH, OR MONEY ORDERS AS I DID. As I
wound up with a canceled check, and POOR QUALITY, NOT AS STATED KIT WITH
ZERO RECOURSE.
Had I used a Credit Card as payment I would have had all kinds of
recourse, and would have been able to put the charge in a DISPUTED
status, and in the end I am sure all I may have eaten was return postage
for the kit returned to the trader.
I will not tell you the name of this unscrupulous trader, but they have
been in business many years. That have a catalog, and sell a bunch of
stuff.
I should have know better as most business persons who are doing a high
volume of sales would normally take one of the major credit cards, as it
open up more potential sales of those who wish to buy and pay on time.
But than as a merchant you must sign an agreement to conduct business
with in what I shall call =93Ethical Guidelines=94.
The kit was finished into a gun, and sold several months after
completion through a broker for what I had in the kit. So in the end I
had no monitory loss, just a lot of aggravation. The Lock is not a fast
good sparking Siler, it is a slow, poor sparker poorly assembled L & R
Classic.
I will state on last time when making purchase in person check check,
and re check what you are buy. Always try to use your CREDIT CARD as
you have right you do not when paying with cash, check, or money order.
Last if you must buy mail order use your CREDIT CARD to protect yourself
from unscrupulous traders.
Also remember that most Trader are reputable Business People who want
Repeat business, but there is a small percentage who one they got your
money could careless about after sales service, as they got your
money...

I am the original poster of the request for your
experiences with the AMM. The travel expenses I
mentioned referred to the requirement of
attending National or Territorial events. Neither
is mandatory but I understand that it is
essential that others do witness your efforts and
handiwork. I also understand that not all
Brigades can accomodate all levels of skills,
interests and authenticity. I'm in central Kansas
between the Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivera Wildlife
Refuges. The Mixed Grass Plains are a far cry
from the Mountain Man's haven. The Santa Fe Trail
does cross my front door. The Kansas Brigade has
only 7 members and I do know three of them. As I
said, not all Brigades are the same or
accomodating.
I do learn, practice and live a week-end or two
a month the 18th and 19th century ways and
manners, usually alone. My interest in the AMM is
a search of companions and hopefully a mentor.
This forum has helped me dispell some of the
mis-information I've gathered before I subscribed
to the list. Thanks very much. I don't mind being
judged as tactless since I know the web is a
voiceless and faceless medium. Here's hoping our
trails do cross.

This is sad but a story I hear at least once or<BR>
twice a year, more resently on craftsman selling<BR>
their wares. Having provided supplies for the<BR>
period folks for over 25 years from a retail, a<BR>
wholesale and a mail order business', I hate to<BR>
see this still a problem, so be aware of it and<BR>
check out whom your dealing with. A good source<BR>
for checking your next advertised trader out<BR>
would be on the internet period trade list - talk<BR>
lines or the trader's local better business<BR>
association, good luck.<BR>
