    Having lived almost seven years near Friendship, Indiana, I learned a
lot from some of the genuine 'old timers' in the muzzle loading game.
    And from them, I learned that one of the most important factors in
getting an accurate barrel was to control harmonic resonance. Fancy words
for vibrations.
    All barrels vibrate. The trick is have your projectile leave the barrel
at the same point in its vibration each time so that your bullet [round
ball, thank you] impacts the target at the same spot each shot.
    The old, soft iron, barrels absorbed a lot of the harmonic resonance
just because of the softness of the material.
    Even then there was some vibration that needed to be
controlled,especially on the very long barrels of Ky/Penn eastern rifles.
The need for control led to the development of swamped barrels.  That
contouring of the barrels was not just to make them pretty. It was by design
to make even long, slim and lightweight barrels accurate.
    And them old timers [pre-1800] were some pretty smart fellers and
downright masterful gunsmiths.  It worked.
    Today's modern steel barrels do not absorb harmonic resonance as well as
the soft iron. This increases the need for other methods to achieve
accuracy.  Heavy barrels is one way. Swamping is another and it works.
    Harmonic resonance is probably not as much a problem on heavy barrels
like Jaegers and Hawkens but it is on the Kentucky styles.

and now am glad that it was you.   Thank you for the memory and the

all barrels were octogon 1" no tapor and has an underhammer ignition---so
it would be almost applicable to a flint gun but a cap was used---
